Continuing the yearlong commemoration of our namesake Edwin Pratt, 50 years after his death, we engaged local author Nancy Rawles to write a new essay that would shed light on his life and legacy. The essay weaves Pratt’s efforts to create greater access in housing and education within the fabric of the national civil rights movement. In May 1965, Edwin Pratt proposed the Triad Plan. The Urban League plan would divide Seattle into zones, with white and black schools being matched. Students within these zones would attend school together, meeting at different levels of their education and providing students with “an enriched, expanded community with which to identify.” – from “Edwin T. Pratt: Excellence and Opportunity,” by Nancy Rawles
The essay is free and available to the public at www.pratt.org/edwinpratt. We hope it will inspire you and generations to come to carry forward Edwin’s vision of access and inclusion. Cheers,

2019 Summer Youth Art Camps All youth art camps meet Monday – Friday, 9 am – 3 pm (5 sessions). Camp fee is $360 per week. After-care is available 3 – 6 pm for $25 per day. DATES
DESCRIPTION
Youth Art Camps for Ages 7–9 WEEK 1 From Recycle to Art (Ages 7 - 9) 07/08 – 07/12
Reinvent everyday objects into new and beautiful artistic creations. Students will find inspiration in plastic bottle caps, plastic silverware, old magazines and newspapers. The sky’s the limit for our imaginations as we reinvent disregarded items into functional and decorative pieces. This week will focus on taking things apart and putting them back together to make new and imaginative art.
WEEK 2 Comics and Cartoons FULL (Ages 7 - 9) 07/15 – 07/19
Write your own story (Comics) and learn to communicate an idea in a single image (Cartooning). Students will learn to develop an idea and turn it into a storyline. Explore the art of putting together elements of a comic book: panels, balloons, and pointers. Using pencils, ink and printmaking students will create characters and stories.
WEEK 3 Scissors, Tape and Glue FULL Everything (Ages 7 - 9) 07/22 – 07/26
This camp is all about putting things together and building. Students will transform drawings into 3 dimensional works of art while working on concepts like visual balance and narrative. Students will create collages, wall-hangings, buildings, spaceships and cars out of cardboard, plastic, paper, wood and much more.
WEEK 4 Past and Present Artists (Ages 7 - 9) 07/29 – 08/02
WEEK 5 Develop Your Own FULL Characters (Ages 7 - 9) 08/05 – 08/09
Step back in time, and journey through the world of art! Each day will focus on a different artist and students will create their own work using similar inspiration and techniques. Students will explore perspective, abstraction, point of view and cubism through the use of traditional drawing and painting materials. All supplies provided. Use your imagination to create your own characters! Who is he/she/them? What do they like? How do they dress? Students will develop a character and explore techniques using pencils, markers, ink, paint and mixed media. On the first day students will decorate a work box for storing all their ideas and work in progress. By the end of the week each student will have finished characters and several unused parts and pieces they can continue playing with after the camp is over.
Register today! pratt.org/youth and pratt.org/teen Cancellation policy: In order to withdraw from a class a signed drop form must be submitted to the front desk. Students who withdraw for a class at least ten days prior to its first meeting will receive a 90% tuition refund. Pratt considers 10% of tuition for all classes nonrefundable in case of withdrawal.
