Francisco Oller. Puertorriqueño que hizo grandes aportaciones culturales y quien desarrolló un interés en plasmar en sus obras los paisajes, las gentes y la cultura de Puerto Rico. El cuadro de la Ceiba pintado por Francisco Oller y es parte del inventario de obras del Museo de Arte de Ponce. Allí podrás contemplarlo o dar un paseo por la calle Comercio para observar la naturaleza que guarda valiosas leyendas. Lamentablemente y aunque la Ceiba se encuentra enferma todavía conserva la magia de su historia.
Ponce’s Majestic Cotton Silk Tree
T
he Cotton Silk tree of the foremost city of Ponce is not only a tree; this tree holds much of the history that has served as inspiration for many poems, songs and paintings. Regarding its age, it has been said that it was already big upon the arrival of Christopher Columbus on the island. Mr. Eduardo Newman Gandía, in his book about the establishment of the
city of Ponce, incorporates facts that document its existence to 1696. Mr. Alejandro Ordóñez who developed the first known map of Ponce in 1818, located the map where it is currently found. This majestic Ponce Cotton Silk tree also inspired Francisco Oller, the only Latin American painter that influenced the impressionism movement. A Puerto Rican, that in addition to making vast cultural contributions developed an
interest in portraying Puerto Rico’s landscape, people and culture in his masterpieces. His painting of the Cotton Silk tree forms part of the Art Museum in Ponce catalog. There or through a simple walk by Comercio Street you may come in contact with its nature that stores invaluable legends, as you become part of its history. Although the cotton Silk tree is unfortunately sick, it still retains the magic of its history.

ecientemente los fanáticos del surf llenaron la playa de Middles en Isabela para disfrutar desde el primer “heat” hasta el último, del despliegue de talento de los surfers profesionales tanto locales como internacionales que compitieron por los $37,000 en premios del Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit # 22. El ganador del primer lugar en categoría de hombre fue Gabe King
de USA, llevándose el premio de $10,000. El segundo lugar lo obtuvo Josie Graves de Puerto Rico el cual ganó $4,500. Mientras que en la categoría de mujeres el primer lugar lo obtuvo la estadounidense Amy Nicholl y el segundo lugar Nikki Viesins llevándose los premios de $5,000 y $2,000 respectivamente.

undreds of Surf fans arrived at Middles Beach in the municipality of Isabela to enjoy and not miss, from the first to the last heat, the display of the talent exhibited by local and international professional surfers that competed for the $37,000 prize awards of the Corona Extra Pro Surf Circuit # 22. Gabe King from the United States captured first place in the men’s category, obtaining the $10,000 prize award. Second place went to Josie Graves of Puerto Rico who received $4,500. T
here are various open track modalities in Puerto Rico that hold annual championships. Cross country is the youngest of these sports on the island; initiating in 2002 and very active since. It’s a fascinating and exciting sport, in addition to being extreme. These long duration races require that its participants have good physical and mental condition. They are run in various established open air courses. Races last up to two hours for adults and half an hour for children. The race track has an average distance of 6 to 7 miles per lap. There are various categories organized by skills: beginners, class C Intermediate, class B, class A, veterans 35 and older, and children. All you need is a motorized vehicle and the appropriate protective equipment. This sport incorporates children as soon as the early age of four (4), seeking to stimulate the development of their motor, physical and mental skills and abilities. To succeed they need to learn strategies to dominate the half hour race, struggling with
the track, climate, machine and their competitors. This all achieved in a family type environment where unity and companionship prevail among family members and friends. Championship races take place in different towns of the Island such as: Villalba, Vega Baja, Sabana Grande and Lajas. It is lead by the Cross Country Commission, known as WORCS, under its current president and champion of class A motorcycle, Cristian Rivera of Team Wally’s Cycle. olar es un sueño que todos tenemos de pequeño, pero ahora sé que lo podemos hacer en Puerto Rico específicamente en la Playa las Criollas en Barceloneta. Allí podrás hacer un vuelo libre como es mayormente reconocida la práctica. El “Hanglading” o ala delta (en español) es un planeador que puede KELLY y ser transportado, despegado aterrizado con la única ayuda de las piernas del piloto, según definido por la Federación Aeronáutica Internacional (FAI) en su Código Deportivo. El
mismo puede iniciarse a pie, desde una montaña o colina, o con la ayuda de algún equipo mecánico para el remolque desde el suelo (arrastre por otra aeronave). Esta última es la que se practica en la Isla, donde con cuatro pasos básicos estas volando y logrando la mayor satisfacción de poder ser ave por un día. Este deporte mundialmente reconocido cuenta con competencias entre los amantes de todos los países que lo practican. Los primeros campeonatos del mundo se celebraron en 1976, en Austria. En Puerto Rico el instructor Roberto Mojica cuenta con sobre 20 años de experiencia en este deporte y ha representado a la Isla en varios eventos mundiales. No resulta sencillo explicar lo que sentirás y mucho menos la experiencia. Quizá la mejor forma de hacerlo es vivirla en tu Isla. A Magical Hangliding Flight By Sylmarie González Orengo
W
anting to fly is a kid’s life dream we all have had. This is now possible on the Island just from Las Criollas Beach in the municipality of Barceloneta where you can embark on an open flight, through a venture known as hangliding. Hangliding is a glider that can be transported, elevated and landed with only the use of the pilot’s legs, as defined by the International Aeronautic Federation in its Sport Code. It can be initiated standing up, from a mountain or hill, or with the help of ground towing mechanical equipment (towed
by another aircraft). The last is the one being practiced on the island; through four basic steps you are flying and experiencing the utmost satisfaction of being a bird for a day. World competitions are

Pendulum=Free-Fall by Giovany Sanjurjo
I
f you think you have heard all that there is to know about extreme sports, let me just tell you that there is something else to add to your Bucket List, Pendulum or Puenting (as it is known in other parts of the world), is an activity full of adrenaline for lovers of extreme adventures. Participants of this sport jump of a bridge in an open fall, supported by rope(s), and sway in the air with pendulum movements as if they were on a giant swing. This sport that came about in Annecy, Switzerland during the 70’s when the German, Helmut Kiene, tied himself with a rope to one of the Cailles River bridges and jumped generating an enormous pendulum; reason for which this hallucinating activity is known as Kiene’s Pendulum. It was not until the beginning of the 90’s that we started to see hikers doing pendulum on the island. My colleague, Mr. Rossano Boscarino, began pendulum jumping in the municipality of Trujillo Alto where he modified the technique being used by less experienced climbers. In 1997, the first jumps of PR52, just of the “Jibaro” monument in Cayey, were achieved. That same year MTV in their visit to Puerto Rico for their reality show “Road Rules” incorporated as part of the their missions a pendulum jump from a bridge in the municipality of Ciales, requesting Mr. Rosano’s services. In some countries, Puenting is included under adventure tourism. In Puerto Rico it is only performed by those knowledgeable of the sport who just simply wants to live the experience, yet there are various companies that are starting to include this sport in their touristic offerings. Pendulum is a high adrenaline activity and requires that all the equipment used for this sport, such a 10 ton force resistant rope, be in perfect conditions. As well as all extreme sports it involves risk, but you need not to worry if safety, equipment and a certified company have been considered. The best is that it can be carried out by all, from eight (8) year old children to 71years old adults, as your adrenaline sets the limit. U
na de las más espectaculares actividades de eco vida nocturna en el Caribe la tenemos en Puerto Rico. La bahía Laguna Grande es localizada dentro de la
Reserva Natural Las Cabezas de San Juan en Fajardo, uno de los seis cuerpos de agua donde puedes disfrutar del espectáculo natural de la bioluminiscencia. Al llegar es como estar en un lugar común cuyos veleros están en el agua, hay kioscos típicos y compañías
de kayaks esperándote para la excursión. Sin imaginar lo que vas a encontrarte, sigues las instrucciones de los instructores y comienzas a remar hacia la entrada de las veredas de mangle rojo. Cuando comencé a remar nunca imaginé que era tan excitante, el escuchar los coquíes, las aves nocturnas y el sonido del agua cuando todos reman. La sensación es mejor que cualquier atracción de agua que exista en Disney. Al llegar a la laguna sólo vez las luces que resplandecen la montañas de Fajardo. El guía nos explica el por qué la laguna es especial y crea la bioluminiscencia. Todos los kayaks se unieron para escuchar la charla y poder observar la magia de estas aguas. Luego en un viaje individual puedes tener tiempo para kayakear sólo y contemplar la hermosa laguna y su entorno. Al culminar, se regresó junto al grupo por los maravillosos canales. La bioluminiscencia es mayormente causada por unos organismos microscópicos conocidos como dinoflagelados. Los dinoflagelados producen luz mediante un proceso químico en el que se unen dos sustancias orgánicas conocidas como luciferina y luciferasa. Cuando estas moléculas reaccionan liberan energía en forma de luz. Esta actividad puede disfrutarse todos los días pero mientras más oscura la noche, más resplandeciente estará el agua. uerto Rico offers one of the most spectacular night ecolife activities in the Caribbean. “Laguna Grande” bay, located in Las Cabezas de San Juan Natural Reserve in Fajardo is one of the six bodies of water where you can enjoy the natural spectacle of bioluminescence. Once there, it’s like having arrived at a familiar area where sail boats are in the water, local booths and kayak companies await to sell you a tour. Without having an idea of what you will encounter, you follow instructions
and start padding towards the entrance of the red mangrove trails. I never imagined it would be so exciting when I started padding, hearing the “coquies” (small puertorriquen frog), the night birds, and the sound of the water in a unison flow as we all paddle; the sensation is better than any Disney attraction. Upon arrival at the lagoon you can only sight the light from the Fajardo Mountains. The guide proceeded to explain why it’s such a special lagoon and what generates the bioluminescence as all kayaks joined to hear the explanation and observe the magical waters. If you select an individual tour you can have more time to kayak alone and explore the beautiful lagoon and its surroundings.
Completed our time we all return back through the wonderful channels as a group. Bioluminescence is mainly produced by microscopic organisms known as dynoflagelates. A chemical process is responsible for the light produced by the Dynoflagelates, when two chemical substances, luceferine and luciferasa, come together, molecules react and release energy in form of light. This two day evenwt of intense competition provided our girls a forum to showcase their abilities before many spectators that came to support the sport. o sabía ni donde era Isabela pero quería aprender a surfear. Allí conocí a Paloma Quintana en unas competencias de surfing sólo para chicas en la playa Jobos de ese pueblo. Me intrigó el saber que se siente el hacer ese deporte. Así que insistí para que me llevaran a tomar clases. Al llegar a mi primera clase, la instructora me enseñó lo básico; el cómo acostarte, el cómo remar con los brazos en el agua y de lo que estarás haciendo una vez estés en el agua para poder pararte. Debo decir que jamás pensé que fuera tan emocionante y más aún cuando intenté lograr pararme en la tabla y dejar que las olas me llevaran, WOW!!!! Fue algo que nunca imaginé poder hacer. Me encantó y espero poder surfear sola pronto. Aunque les confieso que cansa un montón pero está súper nítido. Para mi quinceañero quiero ir a Hawaii y si aprendo bien podré surfear allá. Así que aprenderé a surfear en nuestra Isla de Puerto Rico.

I
did not know where Isabela was located, but I knew I wanted to learn how to surf. That’s where I met Paloma Quintana in an only women surfing competition held at Jobos Beach in that municipality. I was intruded by the feeling of performing the sport, so I insisted in taking lessons. When I arrived at my first lesson, the instructor showed me the basics; how to lay
down, how to paddles with my arms in the water, and what I should do, once in the water, to standup on the board. I must say I never thought it would be so exciting and even more, when I was finally able to stand up and let the waves carry me, WOW!!! It was something I never would have imagined being capable of doing. I loved it and hope to surf alone soon. I need to confess that it is very exhausting, yet it’s super. For my fifteenth birthday I want to go to Hawaii and if I learn well, I can surf there. Therefore, I will learn to surf on our Island, Puerto Rico.

grandes peñascos. Ya en el tope del Salto las Cabras, quedé impresionada con las paredes de roca que nos rodeaban, algunas de estas de aproximadamente 500 pies de altura. La adrenalina de estar en ese lugar mágico mantenía mi paso justo detrás del guía hasta llegar a lo que yo pensaba que era el reto mayor EL CHARCO AZUL. Pensé que me iba a morir, ahora me pregunto si la sensación fue por la falta de aire debido a lo mucho que me apreté el bendito salvavidas. Fui como la quinta en bajar y aunque titubeé por unos minutos me dije “vine aquí a tirarme y lo voy hacer”. Di un paso largo
y traté de seguir todas las instrucciones, que por lo visto funcionaron porque estoy aquí escribiendo la historia. Fue súper emocionante lograr el salto y apreciar el Charco Azul ya más relajada. Luego llegamos a la vereda Rompe Alma. Y sinceramente les digo que el nombre se le queda corto, no solo te rompe el alma. La subida por la vereda fue el tramo más silencioso de todo el viaje, solo se oía las voces que decían ¿podemos descansar? Así que de raíz en raíz, de descanso en descanso llegamos a la cima. ¿Qué si me encantó? Sí. ¿Qué si lo volvería hacer? Síííí. Por eso digo el Cañón está Cañón.

I
immediately said yes when I was invited to the San Cristóbal Canyon. But once I began watching the videos, doubts started arising in my mind since swimming in deep waters terrify me. None the less after
being pressured by my friends, I purchased a lifejacket and initiated my adventure. Our first stop was in a local bakery where a half pound of bread, cost less than a small sandwich in the metro area. After breakfast we entered the San Cristóbal Canyon; our guide pointing out the flora and fauna as we walked. To my surprise, only a few minutes later, we encounter our first
water fall known as” La Niebla” or the Fog Waterfall, which we were told was named due to its appearance when the river rises and covers most of the area. Jumping through the rocks we arrived at “ Las Cabras” or the Goats Waterfall, just looking at it you can understand why only goats can climb though these big rocks. At the top of Las Cabras Waterfall I was truly
impressed by the rock walls that surrounded us, some approximately 500 feet high. The adrenaline of being in this magical place kept me at a pace just behind the guide until we reached what I thought was our greatest challenge “ El Charco Azul” or Blue Pool. At that moment I thought I would die, I wonder if it was due to the lack of air since I had tightened
my lifejacket a bit too much. I was the fifth in going down and although I doubted for some minutes I said to myself: “I came here to jump and I will do it”. I took a long step and tried to follow the instructions, which apparently worked great because I am writing this experience. The jump was super emotional and afterwards, more relaxed, I appreciated Charco azul. Afterwards we arrived at the
Rompe Alma or Soul Breaking Trail. Sincerely the name fits it short, it does not only break your soul… Climbing the trail was the most silent part of our journey, you could only hear voices asking “Can we rest?” Thus, from root to root and rest to rest we reached the top. If you asked me: If I Loved it? Yes. Would I do it again? Yesss... That’s why I say the Canyon is ferocious.
