GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE SITE: The site is a place where the majority of people living are of Danuwar caste. The people of this caste are categorized as low caste people and the majority of people here are under poverty line. The settlement is some 9 km away from the Dhulikhel and the area comes under Panchkhal municipality. The settlement consisted of nearly hundred houses and after the major earthquake almost all the houses are broken and need immediate reconstruction. The houses has been down to earth and now many people have demolished their houses and are awaiting assistance for their houses to be built back better and safer. The main occupation of the people in majority is agriculture. The socio cultural life of the people is in direct relation to the agriculture and small livestock farming. The people in the area are busy most of the time in the year in agriculture and at leisure they are engaged in labour work in surrounding areas.
TRADITIONAL BUILDING OF THE AREA DAMAGED ON EARTHQUAKE
SOCIO ECONOMIC STATUS: The society is more agro based and agricultural driven. The people being hindu the majority of the festivals and celebrations are as per Hindu background. The people are of low caste and they are below poverty line and they have been living from generations in the area in house mad of mud mortar and sundried bricks. The social interaction and the front courtyard angan are the space for social functions. The area lies on a hillock so the surrounding landscape and green landscapes are the major natural elements of the place. However the topography has been creating obstacles in water supply and wells and water bodies are not easily accessible. Also there is forest areas nearby and plenty of bamboo throughout the village. The climate is mostly moderate but with less wind flow because of the surrounding high hills blocking the natural wind flow. The families being agro based in culture their residential units are also similar to the other hilly parts of Nepal and thus they have generally 2 and half storied houses with foundations of bricks and stones, wooden windows doors , wooden posts ,struts and ghingati roofs of slates and tiles., The ground spaces are usually stores and rooms ant the first floor is living and bed rooms and attic on top serves for storage and kitchen. Some houses also have kitchen at the ground. The plots are usually rectangular and buildings are elongated, this limits the floor area of the houses to 500 sq ft or even less.

CONCEPT INTRODUCTION
VERNACULAR CONSTRUCTION APPROACH
REVERSIBILITY
PRINCIPLES
OF
VERNACULAR
CONSTRUCTION TECHNOLOGY A TRADITIONAL HOME THAT CAN GROW WITH ECLIPSE OF TIME…
VERNACULAR ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION ARE THE ACTUAL IDENTITY OF A PLACE. TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE AND CONSTRUCTION ARE NOT ALWAYS ORTHODOX IT IS RATHER FALLOWED BY SET OF REGULAR PRACTICE AND HAS SEVERAL SCIENTIFIC APPROACHES. THE TRADITIONAL VERNACULAR TECHNOLOGY AVOIDS THE FOREIGN MATERIALS AND ONLY INCLUDES MATERIALS THAT ADJUST TO LOCAL ENVIRONMENT AND IS NATURALLY PRODUCED. MATERIALS LIKE WOOD, STONES, BRICKS ARE USED EXTENSIVELY AND ARE CONNECTED MORE NATURALLY BY NATURAL BINDING MATERIALS LIKE LIME SURKHI MUD MORTAR. THE RECENT EARTHQUAKE HAS GIVEN A MASSIVE LOSS OF LIFE AND PROPERTY: PEOPLE ARE AWAITING ASSITANCE FROM GOVERNMENT AND NEED LOW COST CONSTRUCTION TO BE BUILT WITH EXISTING LIMITED RESOURCES. A PERMANENT SHELTER IS AN IMMEDIATE NEED FOR THE AFFECTED PEOPLE LIKE IN KAVREPALANCHOWK VILLAGE PIPALTAR. RECONSTRUCTION CAN BE MADE MORE EFFECTIVE ON DIFFERENT PILOT LEVEL AT INCREMENTAL BASIS. THE NEED CAN BE ADDRESSED BY PROVIDING MORE FLEXIBLE DESIGN THAT CAN GROW WITH ECLIPSE OF TIME BOTH HORIZONTALLY AND VERTICALLY.
THE DETAILING ARE AS SUCH THAT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN RAFTERS PURLINS AND EVERY JOINT IS NATURAL SO THE WHOLE CONSTRUCTION PROCESS IS UNDER REVERSIBILITY PRINCIPLE AND THUS ALL THE MATERIALS CAN BE REUSED AGAIN AND AGAIN FOR MULTIPLE GENERATIONS.
ADDITION ALTERATIONS AND REPAIR IS MUCH EASY AND REVERSIBLE. USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS IN LARGE
THE DESIGN IS VISUALIZED UNDER THREE PHASES
USING ONLY NAILS AND BOLTS AS A FOREIGN MATERIALS.
PHASE I:
ONLY BRICKS HAS TO BE FACTORY MADE.
IMMEDIATE SHELTER WITH MINIMAL NECESSARY SPACES. A CORE HOUSE OF SINGLE STORIED. SIMPLE IN PLAN AND WITH USE OF MUD MORTAR IMPROVED WITH LIME MIX AND WOODEN SEISMIC BANDS AT SILL INTERMEDIATE LEVEL AND AT THE LINTEL. PHASE II: AN INCREMENTAL DESIGN WITH AN ATTIC AND A SMALL LIVESTOCK SHED ADJOINING TO MAKE THE AGRO BASED SOCIAL LIFE BETTER. PHASE III: WITH MORE REQUIREMENTS THE DESIGN GROWS VERTICALLY AND THE DESIGN BECOMES MORE TRADITIONAL AND BETTER TO THE FAMILY UNDER THE ROOF.

BAMBOOS ARE LOCALLY AVAILABLE NATURALLY TREATED AND USED FOR PARTITIONS AND ROOF TRUSES.
WOODEN BANDS ARE USED, WOOD ARE AVAILABLE AND CAN BE MADE RENEWABLE RESOURCES BY MASSIVE COMMUNITY FOREST APPROACH. THE SURROUNDING GEOLOGY HAS RICH RED MUD WHICH IS A GOOD BINDING MORTAR MIX AND IS STABALISED IMRPROVED WITH LIME CLAY, BRICK DUST. USE OF LOCAL MATERIALS AND RESOURCES MAKES CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY INDEPENDENT TO FOREIGN AFFAIRS
ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE ECO FRIENDLY..
