WINTER 2021
A NOTE FROM OUR DIRECTOR Life has changed. We've been here for you the whole time.
L
ife has changed for all of us since Shelter-In-Place was ordered back in March 2020 due to COVID-19. "Normal" personal and business routines were severely disrupted, the health and wellness of our loved ones and ourselves was (and continues to be) the top priority.
We found ourselves having to rapidly adapt to providing essential services to the community, on numerous fronts.
For the Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) Department, we found ourselves having to rapidly adapt to providing essential services to the community on numerous fronts. We had to suddenly close our recreation centers; cancel all of our classes and rentals; process thousands of refunds for programs; close a number of parks, restrooms, and recreational amenities while keeping larger parks open for individual exercise and going for a walk; focus our resources for food support for children, families, and seniors; launch a massive rental assistance program; open showers, porta potties, and hand washing stations for the homeless; redeploy staff to those primary response areas; develop a virtual recreation center site; use our collective creativity to develop virtual camps in a box and other programs; and to step up to the plate to provide critical child care camps while wearing a smile under a mask for the kids' sake (and parent too ;-)). I'm so proud of the PRCS Team who have shown heart, determination, care, and a can-do spirit for our residents and for each other. As we continue to navigate changing health orders and do our very best to deliver services and amenities as we are allowed, I want

to let you know that we care for your physical, mental, and emotional health. We have stated that “Parks Make Life Better,” and this has become even more important during the pandemic. Our collective journey continues with renewed hope. Parks and play spaces have proven to be essential for the health and wellbeing for everyone - a chance to get outside, exercise, get some fresh air, and renew the spirit, while being mindful of wearing a mask and social distance from other people outside of your household. State and County guidelines have allowed the reopening of all playgrounds and recreation amenities. And, effective vaccines have been developed with the expectation of availability in the first and second quarter of 2021. Within this e-Rec Guide, you will see that we have developed fun and safe enrichment programs and recreation outlets to help make your life better. It’s our way of doing our best to provide some normalcy while ensuring the safety for you and others. Also, as you visit our parks, please continue to do your part of preventing the spread by wearing a face mask, be physically distant from other another, don’t participate in group games or go to group picnics, leash your dog if you bring one to the park, and be respectful to those around you. We all will thank you for this. Stay well!

ACTIVITY GUIDE
IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARTY SPRINGER Beloved Photography Instructor for over 20 years Sept. 8, 1949 - Nov. 8, 2020 Redwood City
M
arty Rose Springer died peacefully at home in Redwood City after a 14month bout with bile duct cancer. She is survived by her wife of 22 years, Keldyn West, her aunt, Annette Felder Carrel, and cousins David, Laura, and Jason Carrel and their families. Marty's infectious joy, kindness, and laughter will be remembered and greatly missed by the many friends whom she held so dear. Marty was born in San Francisco and always drew energy from this place. She grew up in Alameda. She attended UC Santa Cruz, receiving a BA in Aesthetic Studies Specializing in Photography. She was a professional photographer and a photography teacher. She believed in the value of community art classes and taught thousands of students over the years. A student could come to her class with any kind of camera, and she would teach them to use it both technically and, more importantly, to find their own artistic voices. She believed that everyone is an artist. Marty curated an annual photography show called Localvision from 1994 to 2019. Localvision gave her students a place to share their work and vision, but its true essence was about building community and connecting people. Marty often said that her happiest day was the day that she and her beloved were finally allowed to marry, February 13, 2004, when SF Mayor Newsom took a stand for human rights. They waited all day for a marriage license in a line that snaked through City Hall, a space filled with the tangible love and joy of so many other couples who had also been waiting for this day, some for decades.
JANUARY - MARCH ISSUE
Marty was funny, generous, fierce, and wise. She also did not take crap from anyone. She was passionate about social justice, nature, music, and people. She loved random road trips with her wife, their trips to Alaska, time with friends, and season seats at both the SF Opera and the West Bay Opera. She enjoyed hosting parties, delighting in introducing friends who she thought should meet. She also enjoyed random strangers. If we lost her in a crowd, she would reappear with an old person attached to her arm who needed support. If asked for money on the street, she would often oblige, ask their names, shake their hands, and wish them well. Marty always chose to focus on joy and gratitude, right up through her final days. She was grateful for those who guided her through the early years, including her grandparents, Louis and Rose Felder,
and her aunt Annette, as well as those she met and loved along the whole of her journey. When her mother, Mary Lou Felder Springer, had brain cancer in 1991, Marty was grateful to be able to care for her, protect her, and come to a place of peace and connection. And as with so many of her experiences, she used what she learned to help others along the path. We will gather for a Celebration of Life after we all have our vaccinations. For those wishing to make a contribution in her memory, we suggest the wbopera.org or CenterForCommonGround.org fighting voter suppression. MAGICAL BRIDGE PLAYGROUND THOUGHTFUL SPACES FOR EVERY BODY
You've heard the mantra, "Kindness is Magical," but what does it mean to create an inclusive space for every body and every one?
W
hat makes Magical Bridge playground so unique? Well, the story beings with a mother of two daughters with vastly different needs, and the quest to find a place where all of them could play together.
populations have been overlooked for far too long. Our new innovative playground will serve not only those with physical and cognitive disabilities, autism, visual and hearing impairments, but also the medically fragile, and our aging population. It's a park and play area for EVERY BODY and EVERY ONE!
Playgrounds are meant to be a place for families to enjoy together, but Olenka Villerreal quickly realized that this was not true for her family and likely not true for the 1-in-4 of us living with visible or invisible disabilities. Long story short, after seven years of dreaming, researching, and fund raising, Magical Bridge playground was born.
We are incredibly grateful and excited to bring Magical Bridge to Redwood City. It took a persistent and incredible village to pull together the fundraising and resources to bring this project to life.
The first of its kind, Magical Bridge is a perfect example of how so many
While COVID-19 has created incredible challenges, we are excited to finally say that we are now open for all families to enjoy while following strict State and County guidelines put in place for our
community's health and safety, of course. On the following pages we will explore each unique zone and the thoughtful elements behind each design. We have learned so much throughout this process and are excited to view all future projects through this new magical lense.

ACTIVITY GUIDE
SWING AND SWAY ZONE The Magic of Swinging • Develops and restores balance • Increases concentration • Soothes and relaxes for all ages Disc swings invite group play in a variety of positions, and large bucket seat swings offer support for various sizes and abilities.
INNOVATION ZONE The Magic of Music • Stimulates brain activity • Encourages social interaction • Facilities non-verbal communication The 24-string Laser Harp, created by artist Jen Lewin, encourages visitors to create a symphony of sounds. When you move through the harp, musical notes will play as you break the invisible laser beams. Tones are on a pentatonic scale which is proven to be more soothing than a western scale, especially to those who have autism. You can also keep the beat with your feet on the several drum pads below!
PLAYHOUSE AND STAGE The Magic of a Playhouse • Encourages imaginative play • Motivates social collaboration • Features a stage for performances Since 1987, Barbara Butler Artist-Builder, Inc. has created custom play structures using all natural redwood and non-toxic tung oil wood stains, including our wheelchair-accessible playhouse.
SLIDE MOUND The Magic of Sliding • Improves balance and spatial orientation • Builds coordination and strength • Promotes growth and development Wheelchair-accessible slides feature patented Dignity Landings™ to provide a safe resting place for those needing assistance at the bottom. Wider slides mean the whole family can slide together. Our slides were carefully chosen based on a number of factors as well as some observations and learnings from the Palo Alto Magical Bridge site. For more detail about our slides, click here, and scroll to our October 5th entry.

KINDNESS CORNER The Magic of Kindness The Kindness Corner, hand-painted by local mural artist Marlon Yanes, features kindness messages chosen by the children of Redwood City. The area inspires kindness and inclusion while providing a gathering place for conversations about acceptance, friendship, and the importance of diversity.
SPIN ZONE The Magic of Spinning • Helps develop both sides of the brain • Improves attention spans for learning • 15 minutes of spinning may impact the brain for up to 8 hours so please spin with caution. The carousel fits two wheelchairs and spaced spinners and allows spinning in various positions. Spinning should be controlled for the best benefit. Encourage children to spin 10 times in one direction. Then stop and spin in the other direction.
TOT ZONE The Magic of Early Play • Develops fine and gross motor skills • Offers challenges for risk-taking • Encourages imagination and socialization The playground is often a child’s first classroom. When children begin their play lives with kindness, inclusion becomes the norm for the rest of their lives. These formative experiences help build more open and accepting communities. This area also houses an exciting water play aqueduct feature where kids can explore sensory play and engineering.
MAGICAL BRIDGE PLAYGOUND INFORMATION Due to the unique nature and popularity of this particular playground we have implemented rules and guidelines that are specific to the Magical Bridge Playground, like the addition of operating hours and the providing of staff and volunteers to support keeping the community safe while at play. Please check our website prior to visiting so that you are aware of what to expect as some of our rules may seem unexpected compared to our other playgrounds. Also, due to COVID-19, information is subject to change.

Behind on Rent Due to COVID-19? AB 3088 is a new state law that provides some protections.
Two steps to prevent eviction for rent debt:
1
By January 31, 2021 you must pay at least 25% of the rent for the period of September 1, 2020 through January 31, 2021.
2
Provide a signed Declaration of COVID-19-Related Financial Distress to your landlord.
When you make a payment, write on the check or money order that the payment is for the current month of rent, and include a letter instructing the landlord to apply the rent to the current month. A letter template is available at www.legalaidsmc.org/covid19
If your landlord serves a written demand for payment with a Declaration form, sign and return the form within 15 days. You do not have to wait for the landlord to demand the rent and serve the form to you. You may use the AB 3088 “Declaration of COVID Financial Distress” form found at www.legalaidsmc.org/covid19
AB 3088 has many other provisions about debt collection and other types of evictions. If you need legal advice, call (650) 517-8911 to schedule a free consultation.
