The Disclosure Series My father’s white 1992 Honda Civic DX hatchback.
He had installed a several thousand‐dollar Pioneer stereo system into it, first with a 6‐CD changer in the trunk, then a 12‐CD changer there, and finally a newer 12‐CD changer under the driver’s seat, which was eventually moved back to the trunk to make room for an amplifier unit under the seat. He would come home from work and quietly I would grab his keys, take my CDs in hand, and head down to the car. I don’t remember if I turned the engine on or not, because I listened for a while and the car still managed to start next time he drove it (except one time, when we were running errands and he left me in the Woolco parking lot with the car off but stereo running and the battery died so the car wouldn’t start without a boost). One particular time I took U2’s Achtung Baby to listen to because I wanted to learn to like the music. It was a bit abrasive for my taste, which at the time search for melody and rhythm. I didn’t understand how people called this music, but it was what was popular and I had to learn to like it if I wanted to fit in. I listened through the whole CD but in particular I remember track 5, Who’s gonna ride your wild horses. I remember listening to it, reading the lyrics in the booklet, and singing along with Bono. Today I genuinely enjoy this CD and this band. Track 6, So Cruel, is sublimely surreal, and the latter tracks (after 8, Mysterious ways) are highly underrated and some of my favorites on the album.
