Precious Pets: We l c o m i n g your favourite animals whatever the species
B A R K I N G
So, my bark really is worse than my bite, apparently, which is why rabies shots are not de rigeur as I present to you this first issue of an extraordinary new monthly, Precious Pets. It is quite unique, actually, something I learned as I looked for anything similar in the world of publishing.
You know, I have learned that publishing a periodical is not for the faint of heart or mind. Having published our Montrealbased sister publication, The Local Herald (which was birthed as The Local Seeker West End Montreal Edition in September 2010) for its three-years and counting, I can attest to that. There is no money in it, which is the main reason you see so many papers shuttering their editorial offices and heading for them thar on-line hills.
Precious Pets is different. Yes, it has a cute website that will grow and develop as life goes on, but in print, too, you will actually look forward to receiving it monthly. I never thought I’d have so much fun conceiving a project about pets! Yes, I have had several in my 56 years, have come to appreciate the joy they give us and the sadness we feel when their little souls depart on another journey altogether. But I don’t live and die for an animal currently and it has been a long while since I have had a pet, truth be told. I just don’t have the room in my small apartment and confining an animal that way would be cruel. I do have a plant, however, and it’s not doing very well, truth be told.
So, please allow me to enjoy dogs, cats, fish, parrots, ferrets, turtles and, yes, even tarantulas (I had Mexican tarantula Judah crawling on me for two years in my mid-twenties… never got bitten and found him a totally charming and fascinating pet), albeit vicariously through you, dear readers, your pictures, your stories and even your obits. If you wish to mourn with someone, I welcome you to do so here, in this literary safe haven for all manner of animal life.
Finally, we value and truly need your comments. We will run letters from our readers, both in print and on line, so, please, don’t be shy. Love us or hate us, we’d love to hear why. But hate us? How can you hate a publication about pets? We are banking on that as something absolutely impossible.
See you in September, likely the third week as the crow flies….
Advertisers are the life blood of any publication and this case is no different. Without advertising revenue, this paper will not survive. So, if you value our pet project, please let the businesses you patronize know about us. Spread the word. I promise you will not be sorry with Precious Pets as we grow. Relax, we will not moult or shed our skin and a plastic bag and shovel will never be required when you take us for a walk.
Finally, in addition to you, our valued readers, I thank two

Keep Pets Healthy, Cool During Hot Weather
PET TIPS
(Family Features) Summer is for relaxing – for pets too. Many pet parents indulge their animal companions with vacations, special meals, hotel stays and trips to the spa. In fact, an estimated $53 billion were spent on pets last year. Yet many families with pets may not realize the longer, hotter days of summer require pampering around their health and safety. “During hot summer months, it’s important for pet parents to pay extra attention to their dogs’ coats,” said Dr. Simon Starkey, veterinary expert for PetSmart. “Pets need to be protected from sun and excessive heat.”
Here are a few simple tips to ensure your pet stays healthy and cool: Stay Hydrated: In the summer, pet parents need to help keep pets hydrated and make water accessible, even outdoors. Some pets simply don’t drink enough water, so adding wet food to their regular dry food diet is a great option. Wet food contains more moisture and can help pets stay hydrated when it’s hot outside. However, wet food is not a substitute for drinking water, so refresh water bowls
several times throughout the day. Supplement Diets: Summer often means taking dogs for a run on the beach and longer daylight hours for playing. To stay active, pet vitamins and supplements are great additions to support overall health with nutrients beyond those found in food. There are also supplements specifically formulated to support healthy skin and coat, such as the GNC Pets Ultra Mega Skin & Coat Essentials for dogs. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, which work to build a glossier and silkier coat. Relax in Style: Whether your pet accompanies you on picnics or long road trips, your companion needs a comfortable place to relax. The Tommy Bahama Pets Floral Cuddler Bed, available exclusively at PetSmart, is a cozy bed with plenty of room for your dog to stretch out. Five percent of the purchase price for each limited-edition item will be donated to help save homeless pets through PetSmart Charities. Travel Smart: A collapsible travel bowl from Top Paw is a must-have travel accessory for summer weekends. Bring it on vacation or to the park to easily serve up food or water. The sealable bowl attaches to a dog’s leash and can be expanded into a two-cup bowl in seconds. Animals do not sweat like humans do. Always Get Grooming: Some remember the following tips when traveling with pets pets get a short haircut every summer but others * Leave your dog at home on warm days. should not be shaved down. Montreal woman finds homes for retired racing Greyhounds
(Story, photos by Bram D. Eisenthal)
Sleek and fast as a cougar, it came at me before I knew it… and then sniffed my crotch. My, my, I thought, was it a hygiene problem that caused Pepper to act that way? “Not at all,” replied Donna Deskin, president of The League of Extraordinary Greyhounds, a West End Montreal-based organization that wants to educate people on Greyhound dogs and in turn find loving homes for them in their retirement years. “Dogs have an olfactory sense ranging from one hundred thousand to one million times more sensitive than a human's. Sniffing is how they ‘meet’ and get to know who they are meeting. Nothing to do with hygiene.” Phew, I thought.
What lay ahead was one of my more fascinating experiences with dogs, which I love dearly. I do not have one now, but I was blessed with two in earlier years, first as a child and then in my late teens. And although I have certainly seen them around, I knew virtually nothing about Greyhounds, other than their vaunted rep for blurring speed. All that was about to change as we headed toward Vermont, early last Saturday, while the sun still struggled to reach the horizon.
Deskin, whom I have known since I was a teenager, was always a resourceful woman with many interests, yet I was dying to learn how she developed such an affinity for canines when, in fact, her only animal during her youth was a gerbil. “It was my dog Rajah that started it all. He passed away in 2004 and I immediately got another dog, a Greyhound named Ricochet, July of that year… he died the following November 2004 of bone cancer. By that time, however, I was hooked on Greyhounds.”
Researching this breed yields impressive results. Initially bred strictly as companion dogs some 4,000 years ago by the ancient Egyptians, they were so loyal, friendly - and gentle as lambs - that they quickly became associated with the nobility. In Medieval England, commoners found in possession of them were actually executed. Queen Elizabeth I had one. Then some sportsman sparked the
concept of racing them, much as horses are raced. Reaching astounding speeds of 45 miles-per-hour, Greyhounds are sight hounds, relying on an acute visual sense that allows them to see objects like small game half a mile away… the reason why the dogs are “led” by a mechanical rabbit during races.
“One of the major misconceptions about Greyhounds is that they need a lot of exercise,” Deskin told me. “But that’s not true. You need to walk them several times per day, just like any other dog, but hardly to the point where either the dog or you are exhausted. Remember that they are sprinters by nature, not long distance runners. They generally sleep 20 out of 24 hours per day. We affectionately refer to them as 45 M.P.H. Couch Potatoes.”
Greyhounds are companion animals. They are not for the family looking for a rough-and-tumble dog the kids can play with. All the Greyhound wants to do is be by your side and curl up beside you.
“They are probably one of the easiest dogs in the world to care for – they have hair, not fur, don’t shed very much and require very little grooming. In the fall and winter they need heavy coats and in the springtime they need rain coats. The only Greyhound ‘rule’ that we insist upon is that, if they are running off-leash, they must always be in a fenced-in enclosure. The can reach their top speed of 45 miles per hour in three strides. You cannot catch them and, certainly at first, they have no recall memory. It is a disaster waiting to happen.” In other words, not knowing what a car or bus is, you do not want your Greyhound running head-long into one.
I was still not ready, however, for what awaited me at Northern Greyhound Adoptions, a 10-year old kennel that cares for 40 dogs at a time. As we pulled up, there was a definite silence… but the moment we walked in they started barking, almost in unison.

I then got to meet them, all totally adorable and extremely intelligent. Visitors are greeted by wagging tails and unbridled affection.
In addition to doing numerous “Meet & Greet” greyhound information sessions in Montreal and surrounding areas, Deskin and her group facilitate adoptions for Canadians. Following a process that includes an adoption questionnaire, and a home visit from a group volunteer and one of their own dogs, Deskin arranges a day to meet the potential adopters to assist with the selection process.
“We like to say the dog will pick you, not vice versa,” said Deskin. “Ask any of our adopters and they will agree. We select a few hounds based on the adopters’ requirements (other pets at home, small children, fenced-in yard or apartment dweller) and each hound gets its’ turn in the let-out yard with their potential family. Some dogs will not pay the family any attention, while others will stick to them like glue, but there is always the one, who will not take his or her eyes off the family even while they are evaluating another hound. "That’s what we look for. It’s magical!"
We support the adopter and the hound through the entire life of the animal. We have made many new close friends through Greyhound adoption and our adopters are just… greyt.”

Do
Why should it be any different when we are walking our dogs? It seems that lately every dog walker I’ve met thinks it’s their dog’s “right” to approach our greyhound and give him a good sniff. No query as to “can our dogs meet?” or even “is he friendly?” Nope, nothing. Would you go over to a child in a stroller and start cuddling him/her without the parent’s permission? Why should that etiquette not extend to our dogs?
s
Bit e e i gg
Dog Walking Etiquette Have you ever stopped at a corner waiting to cross the street and a stranger sidles up right beside you and stands in your personal space? You move over and the stranger moves over as well, again invading “your bubble.” What do you do? You either continue along the sidewalk trying to get away as fast as possible or turn and give the stranger a piece of your mind!

aggression? What if my dog is sick, or blind or deaf? What if he’s a service dog in training? If my dog goes off barking at your dog because you erred and you’ve let your dog approach and surprise him, I would be branded as “the crazy dog lady with the vicious dog” because my dog barked and I gave you a piece of my mind and told you to make your dog back off!
You should always ask. And if the situation is such that you are walking your dog faster than the dog and master on the sidewalk ahead of you, don’t just come right up behind them and pass, show some courtesy and respect the dog’s bubble. Either just move onto the street to go around or hold your dog on a very short leash so that they cannot meet unexpectedly. If asked, most dog owners would be very happy to have your dog meet theirs. Dog socialization is something our pups need all the time. But

don’t just assume that it is ok. I remember a woman who walked her little white fluffy right up to a newly off-the-track greyhound all the while ignoring my frantic efforts to get the dog out of Fluffy’s way. “Oh it’s OK” says the woman, “She thinks she’s a big dog”. And I turned to her and said “Oh that’s OK, too. My dog thinks she’s lunch.” Fluffy was whisked up by her owner and trundled away with a huff. (Donna needs to send me her bio… a few sentences about her)

He looked at me with soulful eyes as he limped towards the door, His tail wagging excitedly, just as it had before. He greeted my guest with a lick and a groan, Perhaps realizing he was soon going home. We went to the sofa, my guest, my dog and I I couldn’t look at either one in the eye. We lifted him up onto my lap. He didn't make a sound, not even a yap. He looked at me as if he knew Our time together would soon be through.
He snuggled closer as if to reassure me His pain was ebbing and he would soon be free. As he shuddered for the very last time, I thanked G-d for all those years that he was mine.
He was there for my family through thick and thin. No matter what life would bring, I could always turn to him. Through his eyes, I understood all he could not say, That he would always be there for me, each and every day.

Dolphin therapy could help young woman with Down Syndrome
Hi, my name is Erika and I have been asked by the good people at Precious Pets to tell you about a program that my daughter, Atara, was accepted into. Atara has Down Syndrome and she is soon going to become involved with a dolphin therapy program.
As someone with D.S., Atara is stereotypically very sociable and loves being around a lot of people. As an individual, she loves large animals. She’ll be working with the Curacao Dolphin Therapy Center and I truly believe that she will thrive as a result. They customize programs to the needs of the children, with their therapists working on specific areas such as speech, behaviour and motor skills. Though Atara is a global communicator and can therefore technically communicate, she is auto-

aggressive, primarily because of frustration through not being understood. The program is in the hands of certified and committed therapists. It complements and reinforces the traditional therapy that patients are receiving at home. Atara, Tova (her sister), Jon (her step dad) and I have been involved in her therapies (though often indirectly) since she was little. Many have been holistic therapies which we were able to get more involved with.
This program is designed for the immediate family. For D.S. individuals, their parents, brothers and sisters are usually the most important people in their lives and the ones who provide a great deal of the care, the major reason why they are closely involved in the therapy program. Experiencing CDTC’s program as a family apparently makes it easier to put the positive results into practice after you have returned home. We will be going to Curacao in November and we must raise approximately $12000 in order to

DIY pet treats: economical, easy and nutritious (BPT) - Many families are struggling to find time to sit down together for a meal these days so it may seem funny that more people are making time to bake treats for their pets. But pets are gaining status in the family hierarchy, according to a Harris Interactive study. In fact, more than 90 percent of pet owners say their pets are an official member of the family. Twenty-four percent say they frequently cook specifically for their pets. Dedicated pet owners have been making treats for their furry buddies since the 1800s, according to Chef Noel Ridsdale, culinary academic director at The Art Institute of Tucson.

He adds that in the last five to seven years, the number of people making pet treats has taken off. "There are many reasons for this, but I think it is the attitude that people have taken with their pets. It seems that over the past 20 years or so, pets have almost become another child in the house. So with this change in behavior toward our pets, it only makes sense that we would now want to feed them better." Value - both in cost and better health Chef Ridsdale states that making pet treats at home is both economical and healthy. "Recipes for these treats are not any different than food for their human counterparts. Most recipes include a protein, a vegetable and a bread. All of these ingredients are readily available and are inexpensive." Do-it-yourself recipes are available on reputable food databases

Chef Ridsdale cites additional, important reasons for making treats at home. There have been more than 20 recalls by pet food manufacturers since January, 2013, according to the FDA. And with increased incidents of pet obesity, allergens and contaminants, knowing what's in pet food - and where it's made is becoming increasingly important. "We want to ensure that our pets are getting the same level of food quality [that we are]. If a dog food is made in China, we don't know for sure what standards are being met. I would not want my pet eating something that might make them sick," states Ridsdale.
