Spring Nutrient Gap Can Hurt Rebreeding

resh green grass is a welcome sight come spring. However, early spring grass with limited growth or volume should be approached with caution when it’s used as the sole source of nutrition for recently calved cows. With limited grass volume, cows can expend more protein and energy than they are taking in and lose body condition. “Cows are also coming out of gestation and into their time of highest nutritional requirement,” Lee Dickerson, senior cattle consultant with Purina Animal Nutrition, says in a company news release. “While it can be lucrative to turn cows out on pasture at the first sign of grass, short grass won’t supply the nutrients in cow needs to perform her best.” Providing adequate nutrition helps cows stay in condition, which can, in turn, help cows get rebred. Rebreeding success will determine the number of calves you’ll have the following year and how much those calves weigh. What are the cow’s requirements coming out of gestation and into lactation? How can you ensure you’re giving her everything she needs?

Needs by the numbers “Nutritional requirements climb upward from gestation to the last trimester of pregnancy and are at their highest during lactation,” says Dickerson. As a cow begins lactation, her protein and phosphorus requirements

go up about 60 to 70 percent compared to requirements during the last trimester. Requirements for total digestible nutrients (TDN) or energy, increase by an additional 15 to 25 percent. These nutrients impact milk production, a cow’s ability to get bred back quickly and, ultimately, the resulting calf crop. “If you only maintain your feeding rate from gestation to lactation you may start shorting your cows of adequate protein and energy. This gap in nutrition can result in lost body condition and performance,” says Dickerson.

pregnant. For cows that calved at a body condition score of 6 (ideal), 98 percent showed estrus by day 40 of the breeding season, and 90 percent were confirmed pregnant by day 40. Comparatively, a drop to a BCS 5 resulted in just 80 percent in estrus and 65 percent confirmed pregnant. At BCS 4, only 56 percent were in estrus and 43 percent were confirmed pregnant. “For every 100 cows, a single point drop from a BCS 6 to a 5 at breeding could equate to roughly 25 calves that are either born later or not born at all because nutrition slipped postcalving,” says Dickerson. “Calves born later result in less weaning weight.” The amount of energy provided to a cow also influences her milk production and lactation length, which impacts nutrition available for her calf. Research has shown that a cow consuming 170 Kcal per metabolic body weight will maintain peak milk production for approximately 8.3 weeks at 20.2 pounds of milk per day, and will produce 2,726 lbs. of milk over the course of 210 days. Providing additional energy, at a level of 290 Kcal per metabolic body weight, resulted in maintaining peak milk production for 10.9 weeks, at 24.2 lbs. of milk per day and a total 210-day production of 3,742 lbs. Set up for spring success “It’s easy to get excited about a little bit of green grass, but in reality, there may not be enough volume to support a cow’s increasing requirements,” says Dickerson. He emphasizes, “Cows will run for green grass and burn more energy searching for grass than what they’ll consume. The energy deficit can result in lost condition,” A visual loss in condition often means you’ve already left some performance on the table. Playing catch-up typically means feeding large amounts of supplement at a higher cost. Dickerson recommends providing free-choice hay and supplement early until grass is lush and plentiful.

“Offer hay early and continue feeding it long enough for cows to achieve a BCS 6 at calving and no less than a BCS 5.5 at breeding,” days Dickerson. Hay can be complemented with a self-fed supplement containing intake control properties, which allows cattle to decide if they need additional energy and protein. Cows won’t consume much supplement if forage is meeting their requirements, but will consume more supplement if forage is not meeting requirements. “Supplementation can help cows maintain body condition through all seasons and can optimize cow performance with existing forage,” concludes Dickerson. Cover the spring nutrient gap, and set your cows up for greatness.

feedlot operator. There are breeds that will produce the high prime and choice percentage carcass. There are breeds that will reach that high of a dressing percent. There are, however, very few that will do both on a consistent basis. Somehow, we as a breed, need to get the word out that Limousin has a place in the beef industry and will produce a consistently high percentage quality and yield product. We need to let our customers know that Limousin works for their bottom line. We need to keep producing a product high in docility that maintains efficiency and muscle without taking marbling away from the carcass. We have made great strides in improving our docility. I am tired of the 20-year-old comments about “wild” Limousin cattle. I am tired of hearing that Limousin-crossed cattle that are high-headed are the result of Limousin and not the other bloodlines that the crossbred maintains. We have made great strides in improving our breed. Maybe it is time to see how the other breeds have managed their issues. At any rate, I love the taste of Limousin meat! Those who know me know that I am no stranger to the dinner table. I breathe Limousin cattle because I know what they can do. It is time to let the industry know what they are missing.

paper done by the end of the month. That gives us the necessary time for production and mailing prior to the upcoming events at the end of April. I have been collecting information on the close-outs of Limousininfluenced fat cattle harvested the past two months. Obviously, I don’t have a complete list of close-outs; however, producers who have shared the data with me have been very satisfied with the feedback they have received. Topping the list given to me were two pot loads of 1,425 lb. 50% Limousin cattle that harvested at 95% choice and 67% yield. Wow! We only dreamed of that a few years ago. Another pot load of cattle was harvested in Iowa with similar close-out data. The feedlot operator basically said, “The $200 premium for such quality is worth the time it takes to get Limousin cattle to reach 1,400-1,500 weights.” I have received other close-out reports indicating very satisfactory data. I know that feedlots want to be efficient by marketing whole pens of fed cattle regardless of the weight variations. In some cases, they like to feed more corn that they sell. However, Limousin with that kind of yield and quality grade will bring profit to both the producer and the

If you looked at our schedule in the Heartland Calendar in the January/ February and March/April Heart Beat magazines, you will understand what I am talking about. The two weeks in February were brutal! We left home February 9 and arrived back home 17 days later, February 25, to 16 inches of snow. That goodness for a very kind neighbor who plowed our driveway. We also drove on treacherous roads, icy and snow covered, in South Dakota, Nebraska and Minnesota on our 17-day trip. We attended nine

sales, two shows and two annual meetings/benefit auctions, and drove 3,868 miles during this time. There were times when we had to depend on others for transportation or to attend a sale when we had a conflict. We also appreciate everyone who opened up their homes to us. Dean and I stayed with Jan Symens in Aberdeen the night before Treftz sale. We also stayed with Jerry and Pat Meek in Parker, Kansas, for two nights in between the Iowa Beef Expo and Gene Raymond’s sale in Garnett, Kansas. Bob and Mary Bosch of Indianola, Iowa, opened up their home the night before Linhart’s sale in Leon, Iowa, and we’ve stayed with Roger and Ann Vorthmann in Treynor, Iowa, numerous times. Thank you for your hospitality! John Symens brought me back to his home in Amherst, South Dakota following the Bar JZ sale and I stayed at their home for two nights. Thanks! We were at Vaughn’s “Genetics for the Future” sale in Napoleon, North Dakota, on the same day. Dean and I are able to “split up” at times and attend two events on the same day. Other times it does not work out and we are thankful for HLA board members and friends to represent us at the Limousin sales. I guess the saying is true, “That’s what friends are for!”

Rick Little of Eldon, Missouri, had surgery on his hand which prevented him from traveling to Denver, Colorado, for this year’s NWSS. We are also thinking about Rita Vaughn of Cavalier, North Dakota, who is recovering from gall bladder

and stomach surgery; Nancy Wagner of Milaca, Minnesota, who had her appendix out; John Goelz of Franklin, Minnesota, who had heart surgery; and Travis Vermillion of Kincaid, Kansas, who had shoulder replacement surgery in March. We hope Charles Linhart is on the “road to recovery” following his nasty spill from a horse just before his sale March 3. Broken ribs are painful, especially when you are busy taking care of cattle. Iowa News… Field Day to be Held in Council Bluffs The 2018 Iowa Junior Limousin Association (IJLA) annual field day will be held in conjunction with the Heartland Limousin Association regional show May 25-26 at the Westfair Fairgrounds. The IJLA show will be Sunday, May 27. There will be a supper Saturday night for all juniors, their families, and other Limousin enthusiasts. In addition, the juniors will hold a meeting to prepare for upcoming shows this summer. The show will begin the next day, May 27 at 9:30 a.m. Entry forms may be obtained from the ILA website or from Grant and Brenda Anderson, junior advisors.

State Fair The 2018 Iowa State Fair Limousin open show will be Monday, August 13 at 8:00 a.m. Cattle may arrive by 8:00 a.m. Saturday, August 11, and they must be in by Noon on that day. Cattle will be released Monday immediately after the show. The annual supper will be held the night before the open show in the Limousin aisle in the cattle barn. Plan to join us for this fun event. It is an opportunity to visit with other breeders and Limousin enthusiasts.

In Memoriam Dr. Richard Shirbroun, 88, of Winterset, formerly of Coon Rapids, Iowa, passed away March 4, 2018. Services were held March 10 at the First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, Iowa. Dick was a founding member of the Limousin breed, holding founding #18. He was also one of the founders of the Iowa Limousin Association. He dispersed his cattle in the 1980s after being in the cattle business for many years. He grew up in Coon Rapids and attended Iowa State College, receiving a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1952. He was a proud member of the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Anchorage, Alaska. He received many awards throughout his career including the American Association of Bovine Practioneers Award for Excellence in Preventive Medicine and he was a recipient of Iowa State’s “Gentle Doctor” award. He also served as president of the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association. Richard is survived by his wife, Wava; children Randy, Camille, and Jim; three step-children Josh, Sara and Jon; 13 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Gress Farms Selected ILA “Commercial Producer of the Year”

he Iowa Limousin Association (ILA) named Gress Farms of Denison, Iowa, as the 2018 “Commercial Producer of the Year.” The award from the ILA and the plaque from the Heartland Limousin Association were presented February 14, 2018, at the Iowa Beef Expo Limousin Sale in Des Moines. David and sons, Trevor, and Aaron, Gress of Denison, Iowa, will compete with other nominated commercial producers for the North American Limousin Foundation “Commercial Producer of the Year” award next January at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. The Gress’s operate a cow-calf herd of 330 cows which are pastured in both Iowa and Missouri. The cows are predominately Red Angus based and are crossed to Limousin bulls for March calving. After weaning in September, the calves are backgrounded and then marketed in January at the local auction. They traditionally top the market and are

sent to lots outside the state of Iowa. They follow a strict maintenance of vaccination protocols along with careful attention to herd health. They follow a rotational grazing system for the cows supplemented with alfalfa hay, and the calves are creep fed. The cows are fed ryelage, corn silage, sorghum-sudan silage and corn stalks plus distillers grain. David and his sons have used Limousin bulls supplied by Leonard Limousin of Holstein, Iowa, for 20 years. The Limousin genetics used supply muscle and growth to the calves. The Gress pregnancy average on the cows is 98%. The Gress family also are involved in community leadership roles, having served as president of the local school board as well as leadership roles on their church board. They are also members of the Crawford County Cattlemen and the Western Iowa Feeder Cattle Association. Congratulations to the Gress family upon receiving the “Commercial Producer of the Year” award.

Iowa Limousin Association president Brian Hait presented the Linhart family with the 2018 Iowa Limousin “Seedstock Producer of the Year” award. Accepting the award were Charles, Kyle, Sara Andrew, Aaron, Heather and Kevin.

Jess Axline, 68, of Lowden, Iowa, passed away at his farm February 26, 2018. Services were held March 3 at Zion United Church of Christ in Lowden. Jess purchased many Limousin bulls and heifers over the years to be used in his commercial herd. He was a lifelong farmer who loved his kids, grandkids, cows and his dog, Max. He also drove for RVH Trucking and enjoyed being on the farm. Jess is survived by his wife, Debra, son, Darin, daughters Angela Peet and Sheila Bowling, six grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends.

Iowa News… Iowa Beef Expo Has $10,500 Top-Selling Bull

he century-plus old Iowa Beef Expo, held at the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, was bustling with activity. The Limousin portion of the Expo took place February 12-14, 2018. The events began Monday morning with check-in, weighing and ultrasounding. After that, the consignors were busy fitting and grooming. Tuesday brought a sale video parade and selection of a sale order. Consignors were given a ballot to choose their top 10 bulls, but they could not vote for their own consignment. A committee then tallied the votes and concurred on the order. Tuesday night the Heartland Limousin Association held their annual banquet and benefit auction. The Iowa Beef Expo Limousin festivities concluded with the chili lunch and a noon sale in the State Fair Cattle arena.

Kansas News… Breeders Travel to El Dorado Members of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) traveled to El Dorado for their annual meeting, social, silent auction and state sale March 9-10, 2018. The festivities took place at the El Dorado Livestock Auction.

Meeting Mark Beikmann, president, welcomed everyone and presented the agenda for the meeting. The 2017

minutes and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. Dean Summerbell gave a report on the activities in the Heartland from the past year. He thanked everyone for their help and support at the 2017 National Junior Limousin Show & Congress in Grand Island, Nebraska, hosted by the HLA. Jerry Meek provided information on the advertising budget. He stated that the KLBA received co-op funds from NALF for advertising. In addition,

they sent out postcards this year as another way to “get the word out” about Limousin cattle in the state. Randy Corns discussed the upcoming state sale. He went over the guidelines for the sale and discussed setting base prices for the bulls and females. Several fundraising ideas were discussed including holding another raffle, selling ads for a herd book and making a calendar with pages for photos and dates to sell. The board will discuss these ideas at their next meeting.

Silent Auction A variety of items were offered for the silent auction. This was one of the ways the members raised money for their association. There were baskets of homemade salsa and pepper jelly, blueberry and cherry pies, a large basket filled with a variety of items including a K-State cutting board, rugs, a K-State weather vane, an iron silhouette of a cow/calf in the middle of a saw blade, and other items. The sale ended just prior to the state sale Saturday.

Kansas Family Wins “Good Steward” Award

Kansas farm family’s soil-friendly, progressive farming practices and contributions to sustainable crop production earned them national notoriety with the National Corn Growers Association (NCGA) 2018 Good Steward Recognition. Randy and Nicole Small, along with their sons Dexter and Maddix, of Neodesha, Kansas, received the “Good Steward” designation at the Commodity Classic Convention and Trade Show in Anaheim, California in February. Kansas Corn CEO Greg Krissek said, “They are not only excellent farmers, they are also outstanding advocates for conservation and agriculture.” In addition to winning this award, the Smalls also were recipients of the Leopold Conservation Award in 2016. They farm 2,350 acres of cropland and manage 400 head of cows at 2S

Land & Cattle. Their two sons went to two different cattle sales on March 11. Maddix purchased Limousin bulls from Super C Limousin at the Kansas State Sale. Continuous long-term, lowdisturbance, no-till is a focal point of the operation. They believe the best ways to ensure the farm remains productive in the future is to pass their conservation ethic on to their children. Along with being no-till since 1999, they plant cover crops to improve soil health, soil test to determine nutrient needs, and split apply nitrogen fertilizers. They also regenerate native prairie grass pasture land. The Smalls have developed a system that works in harmony with their cow-calf operation to improve pasture stands, plant species diversity, and the wildlife native to the area. Kevin Skunes, NCGA president from Arthur, North Dakota, said, “The Small family has a long history of enhancing the farm’s soil and natural resources spanning several generations. They provide a great example of the kind of progressive soil management and stewardship gaining momentum today.”

Minnesota News… Annual Meeting Held in Litchfield Members of the Minnesota Limousin Association traveled to Litchfield, Minnesota, March 24, 2018, for their annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction. The weather did not cooperate this year, with a forecast of heavy snow in the southern and western parts of the state. Although the city of Litchfield missed the storm, other areas were hit hard which affected attendance. Members were not able to travel due to road conditions or they needed to stay home and take care of new calves. The day began with a delicious roast beef dinner followed by the annual meeting. Roger Wagner, president, welcomed everyone. A variety of reports were given during the meeting. Dean Summerbell discussed the 2018 NWSS in Denver, Colorado and the 2017 NALJA show in

Grand Island, Nebraska. He gave a special thanks to everyone who helped with the NALJA show and to Wulf Cattle for donating the meat for the week. Don Biscoe, Minnesota State Fair Limousin representative, talked about last year’s fair and the awards that were given to 4-H and FFA exhibitors, sponsored by the Minnesota Limousin Association. He also encouraged members to enter cattle in the 2018 open show. The Limousin and South Devon associations were the featured breeds at the 2017 Minnesota Beef Expo in October. Kevin Bachmeier, breed representative, thanked the members who put in many hours working throughout the four-day event. Julia Biscoe of Cottage Grove, Minnesota, was the recipient of the MYBEP heifer, donated by Wulf Cattle. She talked about her experience with the heifer this year.

Casey Fanta, junior advisor, gave a report on the upcoming shows. He encouraged juniors to take part in the Heartland Regional Show May 25-26 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the NALJA show July 14-20 in Denver, Colorado.

Featured Speaker Casey Fanta, seedstock manager of Wulf Cattle, Morris, Minnesota, was the featured speaker for the afternoon. He talked about the qualities that Limousin cattle bring to the market. Benefit Auction The afternoon concluded with a benefit auction. Thanks to John Goelz of Franklin, Minnesota, for once again serving as the auctioneer. He always delights the audience with his “Ole and Lena” jokes. Among the items on the auction were a handmade quilt, hooded sweatshirts, gloves, baskets of Arizona fruit, steak knives, a cooler, cattle equipment, and semen. The auction ended with the famous “mystery box.” Bill Biscoe had the final bid and was delighted to find not only “goodies” in the box but also some cash! Thanks to everyone who donated and/or purchased items on the auction! We appreciate your support of the Minnesota Limousin Association.

Missouri News… Field Day Scheduled for Sedalia The Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) and the Missouri Junior Limousin Association will hold their annual field day the weekend of June 8-10, 2018, at the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia. It will be a busy weekend with the MLBA open and junior shows as well as the Missouri Cattlemen’s shows. The junior show will be Saturday following the Cattlemen’s Junior Show and the open show will be Sunday. State Fair The Missouri Limousin open show at the Missouri State Fair will take place Saturday, August 16, 2018. The Limousin FFA and 4-H shows will be held the day before, August 15. This is a great opportunity to greet fellow breeders from across the state and meet new friends in the cattle business.

Nebraska News… Members Enjoy Festivities at Kearney Members of the Nebraska Limousin Association (NLA) traveled to Kearney February 20-22, 2018, for the annual meeting, benefit auction, show and sale. The meeting took place at the Country Inn & Suites, headquarters for the Nebraska Limousin Association, Wednesday evening, February 21. This was held in conjunction with the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic Limousin Show and Sale February 22.

Meeting Gerald “Gus” Gustafson, president of the Nebraska association, opened the meeting, welcomed everyone and introduced the breeders from Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado. He

thanked Kevin Ochsner and Jamie Watts for working with him as breed representatives to the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic. He is also the Limousin representative for the state fair and he gave an update on the 2018 Limousin show. Gwen Behrends, secretary/treasurer, read the reports from last year’s meeting. Bonita Lederer, Director of Producer Education for the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association, gave a report on the progress with the state legislature on agriculture related topics. She also gave an update on the new regulations for transporting livestock. Dean Summerbell gave a report on the activities in the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA). It has been a busy year with many sales, shows, and annual meetings. He

said, “It’s good to see members of the Limousin family actively involved in the many events in the Heartland.” He gave a special thanks to the Nebraska members who worked so hard to help make the 2017 NALJA show in Grand Island, Nebraska, hosted by the HLA, a successful event. It was a wonderful week with top-notch facilities, great hospitality, and wonderful food. Everyone from the Heartland states worked together to make the “Escape to the Island” a week to remember!

Benefit Auction Kevin Ochsner of Kersey, Colorado, once again served as the auctioneer for the benefit auction. A number of interesting items were on the auction including canned meat,

ance Wach, son of Loran and Nancy Wach of Hayes Center, Nebraska, worked hard to achieve his dream of becoming a pilot on the F-22 Raptor Fighter jet. This goal was accomplished on August 25, 2017, after many years of hard work. The Wach family raise Limousin seedstock at their ranch near Hayes Center. Lance grew up showing Limousin cattle at a variety of junior shows in Nebraska. His dream began when he was eight years old, attending his first Nebraska Husker football game. He saw a newspaper ad for a Navy Blue Angel Air Show the next day. After watching the show, he knew that one day he would become a pilot. After high school, Lance attended the Air Force Academy, graduating with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. From there he went to Pilot Training at Vance Air Force base in Enid, Oklahoma. His next step

was to fly a T-38A at Tyndall Air Force Base in Panama City, Florida. His job was to fly against the F-22 Raptors in training missions, playing “enemy” to those learning to fly the F-22 Raptor. A spot opened up in January of 2017 for him to join the F-22 training program and on March 8 of that year he finally flew “The JET” for the first time. It is a very special honor to be able to become an F-22 Raptor pilot. More people have climbed Mount Everest than flown this type of jet. Lance and his wife, Melissa, are stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, Alaska. On a trip home, he visited students at Hayes Center Schools. He talked about his experiences and the students asked many questions. They were especially interested in his flight suit, which is made from a flame retardant material called Nomex. It will protect him from fire if he would need to eject from the plane. His story is a true story of what dreams are made of. It may take thousands of hours of hard work, some risk taking, determination, discipline, and support. It is a great reminder that if you set your mind to something and you work hard, you can achieve anything! “Aim High…Fly-FightWin.” That’s just what Lance Wach did and his lifelong dream came true.

he annual Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic was held at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, Nebraska February 19-25, 2018. The Limousin portion of the event was held on Thursday, February 22. The traditional show was held in the morning with the sale in the afternoon.

Show Judge Curtis Doubet of Sterling, Colorado, evaluated the 12 bulls and two females which were consigned by breeders from Nebraska, Colorado, Minnesota, Indiana, and Iowa.

State Fair

The 2018 South Dakota Summer Spotlight Limousin Show will take place Saturday, July 21 at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds in Huron. A variety of events will be available for juniors to participate in throughout the weekend. Check out the website for the South Dakota Junior Point Show (SKJPS) for more information about this event.

The 2018 South Dakota State Fair Limousin Show will be Friday, August 31 in Huron. More information on the show schedule will be given at a later date on the South Dakota State Fair website. The state fair is a great time to greet fellow breeders from across the state and meet new friends in the cattle business. The Limousin Association hosts a picnic following the show so we hope everyone will come and take part in this event.

In Memoriam Marilyn Rinehart, 90, of Highmore, South Dakota, passed away December 27, 2017. Services were held January 2, 2018, at Our Savior Lutheran Church of Highmore, South Dakota. She grew up on a farm near Seneca, South Dakota, and attended college in Aberdeen, South Dakota, receiving her teaching certificate. She taught at Baldwin country school. Marilyn and her husband, Harold, purchased a ranch in NW Hyde county and established Pompadour Hills Ranch, which is now a third-generation family owned ranch. Her sons, Brady and David, are carrying on the family tradition raising Limousin cattle. She helped start and organize the South Dakota Junior Limousin Association and the North American Junior Limousin Association (NALJA). Her life was filled with many activities including teaching Sunday School and a 4-H leader. She and Harold enjoyed traveling to all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, and the Limouge region of France. Marilyn also filled her time attending farm sales, collecting antiques, and spending time with her family. Marilyn is survived by her four children; Barbara Rinehart, Deborah Rinehart, Brady (Wendi) Rinehart, and David (Maria Beth) Rinehart; ten grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.

Members Meet in Fort Smith, Arkansas Members of the Fullblood Limousin Alliance (FLA) traveled to Fort Smith, Arkansas, for their annual meeting. This took place in conjunction with “The Roundup Sale” Sunday, April 21 at the Fort Smith Livestock Auction.

National Farm Machinery Show In February Stephen, Emily and Carter Haynes set up a display at the National Farm Machinery Show (NFMS). This event is held the second full week in February in Louisville, Kentucky. The Haynes family have represented the Limousin Breed at the NFMS for the past eight years. Their display featured promotional materials about Limousin and the Fullblood Limousin Association. In addition, they also had banners about their operation, A C H Holdings, their cattle and their upcoming sale at the United Producers Facility in Bowling Green, Kentucky, October 6, 2018.

More than 300,000 people attend this event annually. It was a great opportunity to spread the word about the qualities and positive aspects of the Limousin breed through their banners, literature and business cards. The facility was filled with FFA, 4-H youth, young breeders and cattlemen at this show.

National Show The show committee has selected the Ozark Empire Fair, July 27-30, 2018, in Springfield, Missouri, as the location for the Fullblood Limousin Alliance National Show (FLA). The show will be held

With temperatures still below zero and a strong wind out of the north at sale time, the video sale kept everyone warm. Online bidding was available for those buyers unable to attend. Greg Smith of Marion, North Dakota, purchased the bull for $10,250. COMFORTABLE CATTLE PROVIDE BETTER QUALITY BEEF Attendees at a cattle stewardship conference in northwest Iowa heard a common, simple message from speakers that can improve a farm’s economic bottom line: comfortable cattle perform better and consequently, are more profitable. Program organizer Beth Doran said cattle well-being should be a major focus of cattlemen including dealing with pain management, designing comfortable cattle facilities, low-stress weaning, processing cattle, managing heat stress and performing a feedlot assessment.

“Cattle producers are involved in a number of practices ranging from weaning and vaccinating to providing daily care and dealing with day-to-day climate change,” Doran said. “When animal handling is performed correctly and using good stewardship, potential stress on both the animal and the producer is greatly reduced.” Doran, who also is Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef specialist in northwest Iowa, pointed out that comfortable, stress-free cattle result in beef that’s more tender and juicy, important qualities for consumer satisfaction.

Heartland Sale Reports Symens Brothers Host 38th Annual Production Sale

ymens Brothers of Amherst, South Dakota, hosted their 38th annual production sale at the farm February 22, 2018. The sale, dating back to 1980, has become a yearly tradition for buyers from several states to travel to this part of South Dakota to evaluate and bid on the Symens offering. The sale featured the Reserve Division Champion Pen of Three bulls from the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). The Denver bulls drew lots of attention from Limousin seedstock and commercial producers who not only attended the NWSS but also the buyers in attendance at the sale and those who viewed the sale on the internet. The top-selling bull was SYES Encore 315E, a 4/10/17 homozygous black, homozygous polled purebred son of LFLC Checking Account 701C out of Miss SYES Roscoe 316X. The lead bull in the Denver Pen was purchased by Fillmore Ranch of Boone, Colorado, for $18,000. A semen interest

in the bull was purchased by GV Limousin of Garnett, Kansas. Fillmore Ranch struck again, outlasting the vigorous bidding to purchase SYES Easy Going 77E, a 3/26/17 black, homozygous polled purebred son of COLE Businessman 104B out of Miss SYES Ransom 76X for $16,500. Fillmore Ranch had the final bid for a third time, buying SYES Eddy 19E, a 4/2/17 black, polled purebred son of DLVL Canyon out of Miss SYES Worktime 219A. This Denver pen member brought $10,500. Another member of the March NWSS pen, SYES Enhancer 465E, a 3/9/17 black, polled purebred son of LFLC Checking Account 701C out of Miss SYES Atlas 464C was purchased by Doug Henley of Britton, South Dakota, for $9,750. Heartland Sale Reports Lonely Valley Hosts 29th “Keepin’ Kind” Bull Sale

he weather and slippery roads did not keep many cattlemen from attending the Lonely Valley Seedstock 29th annual “Keepin’ Kind” bull sale February 24, 2018, hosted by the Settje Family of Creston, Nebraska. Chad, Dean, Mike and Mark Settje, along with their father and grandfather, Stanley, have produced top-notch bulls for the past 35 years. This year featured 66 Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls and 16 Angus bulls that were evaluated by seedstock and commercial producers from Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming and South Dakota. The Lonely Valley herd in Nebraska consists of over 450 head of registered Limousin, Lim-Flex and Angus cattle. They have recently purchased 500+ head of registered Limousin and Lim-Flex females in Plainville, Kansas. This southern location is now called LV Bar. The goal of LVLS Seedstock is to become a one-stop bull shop for their customers’ genetic needs. The top-selling bull was LVLS Equinox 811E, a 1/31/17 homozygous black, homozygous polled Lim-Flex 62% son of LSTO Best Effort 4833B out of AUTO Blaque Rulon 811X. Mark, Doug and Brandon Bauman of Ponca, Nebraska, purchased the bull for $8,750. Heartland Sale Reports JYF Soars To $6,553 Average

elly and Norma Yorga of Flintoff, Saskatchewan, along with their son, Jeff, held their annual bull sale at their sale facility on the ranch February 26, 2018. A good crowd was on hand to evaluate and bid on the 45 bulls offered by J Yorga Farms. The sale numbers this year were affected by the drought that has impacted southern Canada. American buyers had an advantage in their buying power due to the 20% discount this year because of the money margins between the Canadian and American dollar. A big thank you from the Heartland to Bruce Guthmiller of Robinson, North Dakota, who represented the Heartland Limousin Association and filed this report.

The top-selling bull was JYF Debonair 604D, a 9/5/16 red, homozygous polled purebred son of Wulfs Zephyr X624Z out of TMF 116W. The lead bull in the National Western Reserve Grand Champion Pen of Three in Denver sold to Canadian buyer Mike LeBlanc for $19,000. Another one of the reserve grand champion pen members, JYF Dead Head, a 5/4/16 black, homozygous polled 81% son of JYF Zip out of JYF Barbara 92B, went to Lazy S Limousin of Alberta for $12,250. JYF Doug 299D, a 5/4/16 black, homozygous polled purebred son of Wulfs Zephyr X624Z out of Waddles Watch Me 964 was purchased by Doug Henley of Britton, South Dakota, for 11,500.

Henley also purchased a second bull, JYF Diablo 241D, a 4/20/16 black, polled, 86% son of Wulfs Zephyr X624Z out of SY Stacey 166S for $9,000. Canadian buyer Kevin Stepanski purchased JYF Dimension 602D, a 9/3/16 black, polled purebred son of JYF Zip out of JYF Ballerina 608B for $11,250. Dimension was a member of the reserve grand champion pen of three in Denver.

Kostal Family Livestock of Odell, Nebraska, and Whitwer Limousin of Blue Springs, Nebraska, were guest consignors. Three bulls each brought $4,000 to top the sale. Boyer’s Mr. Eager Man 247E, a 1/29/17 double black, double polled Lim-Flex 67% son of L7 2039Z, out of JTBO Ms Uppermost 247Z brought the top dollar from Brandon Kostal of Odell, Nebraska. Gary Kostal of Odell, Nebraska, purchased Boyer’s Mr. Eastward 196E, a 1/17/17 homozygous black, double polled purebred 87% son of CJSL 3062A out of JTBO Ms You-Da-One 196Y for $4,000. The third bull bringing $4,000 from Jason Eickman of Chester, Nebraska, was Boyer’s Mr. Efficient 21E, a 2/1/17 double black, double polled Lim-Flex 50% son of L7 2039Z, out of JTBO Ms Standard 21Z. Eickman also purchased BOYER Mr. Embassy Suite 4145E, a 3/10/17 red, double polled purebred son of Wulfs Candy Crush M233C out of JTBO Tow Truck 145Y for $3,900. The top-selling open female was JTBO Ms. Early Bird 7196E, a 1/16/17 double black, double polled

purebred 87% daughter of CJSL 3062A out of JTBO Awe-Struck 3196A. She was purchased by Jerry Spitz of Cordell, Oklahoma, for $3,200. Dennis and Janice Hollander of Holton, Kansas, purchased 12 females and were the volume buyers. Jason Eickman bought five bulls. Steve Knoche of Virginia, Nebraska, purchased one bull and three females.

Heartland Sale Reports Vaughn Farms Host 23rd “Genetics for the Future” Sale

A great crowd was on hand and actively bid on a stout set of yearling bulls and bred females. Buyers were also able to bid online. The top-selling bull was TOMV Expressway 7135E, a 4/9/17 red, homozygous polled purebred son of ROMN Zander 145Z out of Miss Tom 2108Z. He was purchased by Galen Meier of Carson, North Dakota, for $7,250. Rocking S Limousin of McLeod, North Dakota, purchased TOMV Ever Ready 780E, a 3/19/17 homozygous black, homozygous polled purebred son of JYF Zeek 151Z out of TOMV Miss Young Gun 427B for $6,250. Dennis Deckert of Wing, North Dakota, had the final bid of $5,720 on CRVL Extra Length 745E, a 3/11/17 red, homozygous polled purebred son of DLVL Bud Ice 4112B out of CRVL Miss Pure Gold 156Y. Also bringing $5,750 from Harold and Travis Bies of Fairburn, South Dakota, was CRVL Easy Sleeper 7124E, a 4/2/17 red, homozygous polled, purebred son of JYF Zeek 151Z out of CRVL DLVL Friendly 391A.

A third bull bringing $5,750 from Pat Leier of Tappan, North Dakota, was DLVL Elmer Fudd 781E, a 3/20/17 black, homozygous polled purebred son of JYF Zeek 151Z out of DLVL Miss Workhorse 285Z. The high-selling bred female was TOMV Miss Electro 661D, a 3/16/17 red, polled LimFlex 75% daughter of STNBRZ Electro out of Miss Tom F11Y bred to DLVL Bicep. She was purchased by Potter Livestock of Braddock, North Dakota, for $2,350.

Jim Thomas of Flandreau, South Dakota, was the volume buyer, purchasing five females and one bull. Jerry and Jason Mootz of Dubuque, IA, purchased four bred females.
