From Peewee

to President

by Reagan Taylor Editor’s Note: This article was written one year ago, Randa is now the NALJA past president.

I

n the summer of 2006, a shy, seven-yearold little girl walked her first calf into the show ring in Lawton, Oklahoma, for her first National Junior Limousin Show and Congress. She was a little nervous, kind of scared, but filled with pride as she showed her calf, Rebecca, all on her own. Her papa stood with pride on ring side and watched his granddaughter lead her calf with confidence having no clue what incredible gift he had just given her. Randa Taylor has been a member of the North American Limousin Junior Association (NALJA) since she was seven years old and began showing heifers under the guidance of her papa, Wayne Baber. She has been on the National Junior Board for three and a half years, serving as secretary and now president. She also served on the Texas Junior Limousin Association board of directors for four years, serving as President in 2016.

4

TLA | SEPT/OCT 2019

As the current NALJA president, Taylor plans to focus more on the juniors of the association and create a variety of activities that will leave lifelong memories for them to look back on. She also would like to help the association grow with their social media presence in order to find new members and showcase all the amazing features that NALJA currently has to offer. Taylor states, “Growing up, my favorite thing about traveling to stock shows was not only working with my animals but getting to meet and make lifelong friends from all other states.” As NALJA president, Taylor travels to various stock shows promoting the Limousin breed and helping with junior show activities. Last year, she traveled to Tennessee and Oregon to work the Eastern and Western Regional shows, and then headed to Denver, Colorado, for the National Western Stock Show. She was also able to attend the NCBA’s Cattle Industry Convention this past February, which took place in Louisiana. A main focus as president is to help plan and prepare for future Junior National Shows, Taylor s a y s “t h i s i n c l u d e s two separate weekend board meetings, multiple conference calls, fundraising activities, and working with the NALF Board of Directors.” Besides being NALJA President,

Taylor is currently classified a junior at Texas A&M University, majoring in Animal Science and minoring in Business. While maintaining her grades, she is actively involved in Saddle & Sirloin, Texas Aggie Cattle Women’s, Future Aggie Nurses, and the Aggie Experience Council. She works a part time job at Residents Life, and is an official university tour guide. “Being a tour guide is a volunteer job, however I love giving back to the university that gives me so much. I also enjoy being able to spread my love and enthusiasm about being an Aggie to all potential students”. Ultimately, she plans to attend TAMU nursing school to become a pediatric nurse while running her own small Limousin operation. Growing up in the stock show barns, it was never about winning the blue ribbons or big banners. It was the families that showed up, the fun memories made, and the valuable life lessons she was taught by her many mentors. Taylor’s priority now is giving back to the younger generation hoping to be as good of a role model as the ones she has looked up to for so many years. Taylor states, “I wouldn’t be the leader I am today without my Papa’s support and the continued encouragement from my Limousin family.”

TJLA FIELD DAY SHOW The Lone Star Shoot-Out is a heifer futurity show held during the junior heifer show at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The ShootOut is sanctioned by the Texas Limousin Association and funded by TLA members who sell and nominate heifers. There are some slight changes for this year’s Lone Star Shoot-Out Show. There is no longer a guaranteed purse of $10,000, however, we are confident that our purse will be close to or exceed that amount. Every kid is guaranteed a check. Check premiums are based on the number of entries. Exhibitors must be TJLA members in order to compete in the Lone Star Shoot-Out. Exhibitors must also submit an entry application, copy of registration papers and entry fee of $25 to the TLA, by December 1, 2019. Any entries received after December 1, will cost $50.

TJLA SHOWMANSHIP CONTEST The TJLA Show Heifer of the year points will concluded with the State Fair of Texas in October. The unofficial standings for the top three are currently: SCAS Enchantress, shown by Cole Sullivan; LLKT Miss Electra, shown by Jacob Keeton; and SHSK Felicity, shown by Bryntlee Wilkerson. Please keep in mind, not all show results have been reported. Visit www.texaslimousin.com to stay up to date on Heifer of the Year standings and points. If you have any questions, contact Brittni Allerkamp at (806) 500-8785 or texaslimousin@gmail.com. POINT SCALE: 20 pints for grand champion, 15 points for reserve grand champion; a descending scale for the top five places in class beginning with 10 points for 1st, nine for 2nd, eight for 3rd, seven for 4th, and six for 5th. Points will be considered beginning with the Lone Star ShootOut, Fort Worth Jr. Show, San Antonio Jr. Show, San Angelo Jr. Show, Houston Jr. Show, Star of Texas at Austin, TJLA Field Day, NJLS&C Female Show, West Texas Fair, East Texas Junior Show, South Plains Fair, Tri-State Fair, Heart of Texas and State Fair of Texas. Please note, if any of the above mentioned shows for some reason DO NOT have a Limousin breed division, points will not be counted. In the event of a tie, points from the Field Day Show will be used as a tie breaker: if it is still a tie, points from Junior Nationals will be the tie breaker. Points from only five of the afore mentioned shows will be used to determine winners.

A LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARY Hello Everyone! Hope everyone has had a great summer. I know mine went by a little too fast. Summer’s always seem to be so busy and time

2020 TLA FORT WORTH STOCK SHOW EVENTS

just seems to fly by. However, this summer was an exciting one for the TLA, because we got to implement a new website for our members! We can now be found at www.texaslimousin.com. I think most of you will find the new website to be more up to date, user friendly and member oriented. One of my personal favorites about the new website, is the ability to pay for things online. For example you can now purchase and pay for your membership dues online. How cool is that? Or if you would like to pay any invoice you may have, you just have to let me know

The schedule has been set for the 2020 TLA events held during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. We will be holding the Cowtown Classic Limousin Sale Friday , January 31, 2020, at 6 p.m in the West arena of the Richardson-Bass Building. The Junior Limousin Heifer Show will be Sunday January 26, 2020, at 8 a.m. in the Watt Arena, East wing. Mr. Jason Duggin of Calhoun, Gerogia, will judge the Junior Show. The Level 1 Medal of Excellence Limousin Show will be Saturday, February 1 at Noon in the Cattle Arena. Following the Medal of Excellence Show will be the annual TLA membership meeting and banquet.

and I can set it up to where you can pay for it online. Since we are living in a world where checks are slowly becoming a thing of the past, we figured it was time to step up our game and offer you that payment option. Will all that said, like always, I am always a text, phone call, or email away if you ever have any questions or concerns.

HOST HOTEL FOR FORT WORTH

The SpringHill Suites located at 3250 Lovell Ave. will once again serve as the host hotel for the TLA’s events held during the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo. A room block has been set for the TLA with a rate of $119 plus tax for a standard suite. The room block is set for January 29, 2020, to February 3, 2020. For reservations, call (817) 878-2554 or contact Brittni Allerkamp for the reservation link.

God bless and best of luck! Brittni
