Economic Outlook Suggests Better Beef Prices

F

armers and ranchers needing heifers to replace old cows—or sold cows—are searching at a good time. Recent declining profits and bad winters forced downsizing of the heifer supply. But growing demand for quality beef lends an optimistic outlook for 2020 cattle prices, Scott Brown, University of Missouri Extension livestock economist, says in an Extension news release. “I see some crazy good price projections out there,” he says. But he’s not going that far in spite of seeing growing demand. So much depends on growing foreign trade, he says. Other countries want high quality.

Watch price spreads for quality beef, USDA Choice to Prime grades, he says. “It’s quality that counts,” Brown says. In a recent week, boxed-beef price for prime beef was $257 per hundredweight while select was $208. That’s $49 more for quality. Those prices work back to sales of feeder calves. But that takes farm records and marketing to capture gains. Raising and selling calves isn’t enough. Feedlot buyers learn farm reputations and bid more for quality calves. It takes management for producers to know their calf quality and market it. It’s more than just “round them

up and sell them”. Zac Erwin, MU Extension livestock specialist and Kirksville SMS sale manager, said bred heifers may be hard to find this year. “Most producers bred fewer than last year due to low profits,” he said. Economist Brown says volatility in beef prices results from uncertainty on foreign trade. China and Japan offer big potential for importing more beef. However, trade deals are still in flux. African swine fever losses in China play a part in beef demand. Pork prices have gone up, which has related increases in beef demand. The USDA outlooks show the potential for three million metric tons of beef to China. That approaches almost a quarter of U.S. beef for next year. The U.S. can compete with other countries for that demand. The edge goes to U.S. beef quality. Erwin says farmers selling at the Kirksville, Missouri, “Show-MeSelect” sale picked their theme: “Prepare for the Future”. Beef producers need to think ahead. There is diminishing demand for Select beef, Brown says. There’s always uncertainty. No one knows future weather, diseases, trade deals, or politics. So once again, “it’s quality that counts.”

us. After nearly 40 years of living in the country surrounded by both domestic and wild life, Beverly and I, using an old cliché, have “moved to town”. I will miss the serenity of county life, but the time has come when the rigors of maintaining an acreage, while serving the Heartland, was becoming an issue. Our new address is: 619 139th Lane NW, Andover, MN 55304. The stress of moving was unbelievable for an old codger like me. I could not believe the amount of stuff that Beverly and I accumulated over the past 25 years. Why didn’t we throw it away? Four roll-offs later, we are still tossing junk. This is a good reminder to throw away stuff along the way and not wait until it is time to move, like we did. Forget about, “I may need that item later”. For us, later never came. Now to reporting on the late fall activities. The cattle prices have not been favorable. There are a host of reasons why they have not improved. I think that this year’s weather, which affected a late harvest, was a major reason. I have noticed; however, that purebred sales across all breeds; although not as strong as previous years, have been better than predicted. The commercial replacement female sales have not been as strong. Although a potload of red bred commercial females carrying the service of a purebred Limousin bull topped the Superior Livestock auction endorsed by Heartland Limousin Association and NALF, only 10 lots were reported sold on the sale. Interest in the commercial female market was not quite ready to support the sale. In Minnesota, the news led off with a lack of hay available for winter feeding. If that is the case, then hay prices will dictate some of the apparent lack of interest of

Big things happened in 2019, Beverly and I moved to town. Here’s to 2020 and stronger cattle prices! buying replacements or growing the herd number. We can only hope for improved conditions to reflect a better market. On November 23, close to 30 Heartland members traveled to Council Bluffs, Iowa, for two days of meetings as we look at the future of the Heartland Limousin Association. Kevin Ochsner of Kersey, Colorado, led the group on a structured plan, recognizing and prioritizing the strengths and weaknesses of the association as we move forward and look to the future. All participants felt that forming a strategic plan was a necessary step to prepare for the future of the Heartland Limousin Association. Our goal is to increase our focus on promoting Limousin cattle in the commercial sector while providing service to our members. A second goal is to continue to support the North American Limousin Foundation The third major goal is to continue a “Limousin Family” atmosphere, where Limousin breeders can interact with fellow breeders and form a strong relationship in their promotion of Limousin cattle.

Happy New Year

Mission Statement of the Heartland Limousin Association The purpose for which the HLA is organized is to serve as a service organization designed to promote and further enhance the Limousin breed of cattle in the seven state area comprised of IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, SD and WI. The goals for the Association shall include promotion, strengthening state and junior associations within the region; development of a regional publication; improvement of communication and a unified attitude of breeders; to provide market information and expertise; to serve as a coordinator of events between the Association and the industry; to increase breeder involvement; and to strengthen ties between the NALF and the Heartland Limousin Association.

e want to wish all of our Heartland friends a blessed New Year. Every year brings changes in all of our lives. This year Dean and I made a major change—moving to a new location after living in our home for 25 years. Our new address is: 619 139th Lane NW, Andover, MN 55304. In June we decided to put our house in the country up for sale and move into the northern suburbs of Anoka County. Our home was located on three wooded acres next to a creek. We loved the area, but we thought it was time to “downsize” and move closer to town. The sale of our house was quite a unique process. It started in July when the realtors “staged” our home. That was a new experience for us. They took out most of our things, leaving only the large pieces of furniture. Dean and I got

very good at eating on our laps. They did a very nice job, but it just didn’t look like our house with all the pictures, decorations, and some furniture gone. Throughout the fall, we ended up signing a total of three purchase agreements. We went through all the details needed to sell the home; having the well water tested, the septic system checked and pumped, and the home inspected only to have the first two sales fall through. When we signed the third purchase agreement, I told our realtor that it was either “Third Time’s a Charm” or “Three Strikes and You’re Out”. Our realtor said that she had never had this happen in all

Thanks to the Heartland Limousin Association for sending this beautiful floral arrangement as a housewarming gift!

My Mom made a delicious, old-fashion goulash hot dish. Everyone that eats it always calls it “comfort food”. I have served it to the church rummage sale workers, taken it to a potluck for retired teachers, and made it for our family. It’s a simple recipe—I hope you enjoy! Bev Summerbell

Hamburger Goulash 1 lb. hamburger 1-2 cups ketchup, add more if needed ¼ to ½ cup onion, minced 1-2 tsp. mustard 1 can chicken gumbo soup ½ cup Ole West Dipping sauce, add more if needed 1 cup elbow macaroni ¼ cup brown sugar Salt & pepper to taste

Directions • Brown hamburger with onion (onion can be left out). • Add soup to hamburger. • . Add the rest of the ingredients to the hamburger, heat till mixed. • . Cook macaroni according to package directions. • . Mix hamburger mixture with cooked macaroni. • Bake at 350 degrees for one hour.

the years that she’s been selling homes. You never know how much stuff you accumulate until it’s time to pack up and move. We spent the summer going through the garage and two sheds, cleaning out things that we had inherited from both of our parents as well as our two sons. We spent hours at the recycle center, shredding documents and throwing away items that we no longer used or needed. Once the outside was done, it was time to tackle the inside of the house. We found clothes that haven’t been worn in years, all kinds of gadgets that we no longer use, old papers in the office, and the list goes on and on. Needless to say, we ended up with many bags that were donated to various charities. Our closing date was December 4; but we moved out December 2. That gave me a day to clean the house and make sure we didn’t leave anything behind. When things got moved into our home, it felt as though we were living in a “sea of boxes”. It was an overwhelming task to find things, sort

through the boxes, and try to figure out where to put all the stuff. About the time when I thought I had a room finished, I found MORE boxes with items to put away. I thought about the old TV show “Bewitched” where Samantha twitches her nose and everything was magically done. That would have been very welcome as I stared at the number of boxes left to unpack. Putting out the January/February Heart Beat and SOURCE was quite a challenge. We had to wait a week to get our internet hooked up after we moved. Then, I could not find the paperwork that I needed in order to

Vol. 28 • Issue 1 • Jan/Feb 2020 type the articles for the paper. Mary Quigley was very patient with me when I said I told her I needed more time to get things sent. I also appreciated the advertisers who sent in their ads for the paper and the SOURCE. In the midst of all the mess of moving, Dean and I went to Las Vegas for the “A Night on the Town Limousin Sale” at the Bellagio Hotel and Casino. That is always a fun event! From there we went to Scottsdale, Arizona, making a stop in Las Algadones, Mexico, to see Humberto, our dentist. We have been going to him for our dental work since 2000.

It was good to get away from the “mess” at our house, spending a week at a timeshare in Scottsdale. We used the time to write Christmas cards, send out the Heartland Limousin Association holiday greeting and dues letter, and proof the Heart Beat. We knew that if we were home, we would concentrate on unpacking boxes rather than getting these Christmas tasks done. As I typed the Heartland calendar, I realized that the upcoming months will once again be filled with many Limousin events. We look forward to seeing all of our Limousin family at these shows, sales and activities.

One of the reasons Leonard Limousin is different is because their purebred philosophy is built on one simple concept: When you buy a drill, it isn’t the drill you want, or even holes. You want what the hole can do for you. Leonards realized 50 years ago that when cattlemen buy bulls they don’t really want a bull, or even calves—it’s profits and success they are after. Every effort of Leonard Limousin is to see that those who buy breeding stock from us enjoy success. That’s why over 80% of our bulls sell to repeat customers every year. Our unwavering commitment to the things that matter in beef production has kept us and our customers in business, since 1969. If you need an elite herd sire or groups of half brothers for a commercial operation, we can provide you proven feed conversion, growth rate and calm disposition genetics.

Minnesota News… Annual Meeting Set for March 21 The Minnesota Limousin Association will hold their annual meeting, banquet, and benefit auction Saturday, March 21, 2020, at the American Legion in Litchfield. The day will begin with a social hour at 11:00 a.m., a junior meeting, and the meal at noon. Following the meal, there will be the annual meeting. We were blessed with good weather last year, so we’re hoping there will not be a blizzard or icy roads this year. Contact Don Biscoe, president, or any member of the board of directors to let them know if you will be attending the banquet. They would also like to know what you will be bringing for the benefit auction. If you are not able to attend, the board would appreciate it if you would send a bid with them for the benefit auction. The money raised from the auction goes to support the senior and junior associations throughout the upcoming year.

Wulf Cattle Sale Moves to April Wulf Cattle have made the decision to move their annual sale back a month, from March to April due to the unpredictable weather. Last year the sale was scheduled for March 19; however, it had to be moved back because of the severe flooding in that part of Nebraska. Even a month later, many of the roads were still flooded and detours had to be used in order to get to the ranch. Last year was the first time that the sale had been held in Nebraska after being in Morris, Minnesota, for 30 years. It was quite a change; however, seedstock and commercial cattlemen appreciated the sale facility and the option to view all the sale cattle at the ranch.

uniors from Minnesota and Wisconsin exhibited their Limousin projects Saturday and Sunday, October 19-20, 2019 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Despite the late harvest, a large number of juniors took part in the annual Minnesota Beef Expo. They enjoyed the activities that

took place over the four days of the Expo, which culminated in the allbreeds junior female show. Judge Jack Ward of Plattsburg, Missouri, evaluated the Limousin heifers from Minnesota and Wisconsin juniors on Sunday. The steer show was held the day before, October 19.

The reserve grand champion was VL Finishing Touch 844F, a 4/7/18 black, polled daughter of Alter Ego out of VL Zarah 2214Z exhibited by Nate Crouch of Mabel, MN.

Jerry Wulf a Member of Beef Industry “Long Range Task Force”

individuals from across the United States who are devoted to ensuring the long-term success of the beef industry. The newly appointed committee will consider all aspects of the industry from production trends, economic

The group will evaluate the current plan and determine, based on industry trends and insights, where the industry should maintain and/or shift focus over the next five years. The new plan, developed by this committee, will be effective from 2021 through 2025.
