Bull Management Key to Successful Breeding Season
B
ull management before and during breeding season can improve producers’ chances for reproductive success, according to a Texas A&M Extension expert. It’s important to make sure bulls are ready and in good condition heading into breeding season, Jason Banta, Texas A&M Extension beef cattle specialist, said in an Extension news release. A body condition score of 5 to 6 is recommended before breeding season starts, he said. “Bulls also need to be on an appropriate vaccination program and treated for internal and external parasites,” Banta said. Four to eight weeks before breeding, consider having a veterinarian perform a breeding soundness exam on bulls, Banta said. The exam will
determine if a bull is a satisfactory potential breeder. A semen sample will be collected to assess sperm mortality and whether sperm morphology is good or shows defects. The veterinarian will also palpate the reproductive organs to make sure everything is normal. “We want to do this a few weeks before turnout so that we have time to find a replacement if there is a problem,” he said. Once bulls are placed on pastures it’s important to monitor them, Banta said. Producers should be sure bulls are checking to see when cows are in heat and that the bulls are physically able to breed normally. “Additionally, any injuries or foot rot will impact a bull’s desire to breed and should be addressed immediately,” he said.

Banta said it’s also important to keep records of cows that have been bred by a bull. Write down the identification numbers, and make sure the cow does not come back into heat. “A lot of cows in heat at the end of breeding season is a bad sign and generally indicates fertility problems in one or more bulls,” he said. Banta said some producers keep bulls in pastures with heifers and cows year-round, but he recommends setting a fixed breeding season. Bulls should be allowed access to cows for no more than about 90 days to reduce the potential for heifer calves being bred prior to weaning. “Physiologically, 6 to 7-month-old heifers aren’t ready to be bred even though they may come into heat,” he said. “It’s best to wait until they are 13-½ months to 15 months old.” Banta said a fixed season also makes day-to-day management practices, such as vaccinations, simpler to implement because calves are of similar age and cows are in similar stages of production.

for the first two and a half weeks. However, a typical February snowstorm hampered the end of our trip. We crossed Nebraska five times during the sale run. We traveled from South Dakota to Iowa, then on to Kansas, back to South Dakota, on to Nebraska, and back to South Dakota before returning once more to Nebraska February 25. Beverly covered two sales and two state meetings because I had four sales on the corresponding days. The mileage was in excess of 5,000 miles. Thank you to Herman and Judy Symens, Casey Fanta, Jerry Wulf, Jon and Lori Moser, Bernie and Kathy Larson, and Roger and Nancy Wagner for getting her across the Heartland. She began her journey in East Bethel and headed to Wetonka, South Dakota. From there she went Des Moines, Iowa, then Kearney, Nebraska, and on to Morris, Minnesota. The next destination was Litchfield, Minnesota, then back to Hendricks, Minnesota, before finally ending in Sparta, Wisconsin. Despite all the miles, it was a pleasure to promote Limousin genetics at all of the sales and shows we attended. I appreciate the willingness of breeders to help us out when we had to be at 15 events in 18 days. I want to thank the members of Heartland who attended the Heartland annual meeting, banquet, and benefit auction. The auction was very successful, raising enough funds to keep us on the road throughout the Heartland. I want to welcome Bart Mitchell of Boscobel, Wisconsin; Randy Corns of Altoona Kansas; and Casey Fanta of Starbuck, Minnesota, who were elected to serve on the HLA board of directors. I look forward to working with them as we seek to keep the HLA strong and successful. I hope we can continue to be of service to the Limousin breed and the Heartland Association for another year. I also want to thank the Heartland for their support of the picture project. The money raised will provide the extra funds necessary to host the National Junior Limousin Show & Congress (NJLS&C) in Grand Island, Nebraska, July 1-7, 2017. A special thank you to Norma Effertz of Velva, North Dakota,
and Judy Symens of Sisseton, South Dakota, for their leadership in making this project a tremendous success. A major thank you also is extended to Charles Linhart of Linhart Limousin, Leon, Iowa, for his donation of two packages consisting of embryos to be sold on their “Divas Online Sale.” The funds will come in handy to support the junior program at NJLS&C in Grand Island. We were saddened to hear of the death of Tom Smith from Smithton, Missouri. Tom was a pioneer in the Limousin breed. He and his wife, Rosalie, raised Limousin seedstock for decades and sold their genetics into several states and countries. We will miss Tom and our sympathy is extended Rosalie. Barry Vig, a Limousin breeder from Opal, South Dakota, was tragically killed in a plane crash in March. He also was an early breeder of Limousin and a loyal member of the South Dakota Limousin Association. Our sympathy is extended to his family and friends as we mourn his loss. Another tragic event that affected seedstock and commercial breeders alike was the wildfire that ravaged parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Southwestern Kansas. HLA member Tom Betschart of Ashland, Kansas, was caught in the bullseye of the fire. He managed to save most of his cattle, but suffered smoke inhalation and spent time in the hospital recovering. He told me he opened the gate and let 40 heifers out to survive on their own. They roamed the streets of Ashland for two days before being rounded up. He said it was a testament to the improved Limousin docility as no incidents happened between people and the cows, even under panicky conditions. We wish Tom and Susan the best as they try to recover after losing their grass and hay. If anyone has surplus hay, they could call Tom to see if he still needs hay after the recent hay drop into the area. Beverly and I want to wish everyone good luck during the calving season and we will see you at the spring sales and at all the summer shows. We are looking forward to our “Escape to Grand Island” in July. HLA Executive Secretary Dean Summerbell presented retiring board member Norma Effertz of Velva, ND, with an appreciation gift for her service to the Heartland.

I
survived! That is how I felt after the grueling travel in the months of February and March. It was surprising that we even knew if we were “coming or going” considering the number of miles we traveled in a three-week span in February. During that time, Dean and I went our separate ways four times in order to cover all of the events in the Heartland. There were days when I was not sure how I was going to get from one place to another, but everything worked out. The blizzard in South Dakota complicated things, but thankfully, breeders offered to give me rides from one event to another. I extend a special thank you to all of those who provided transportation during the months of
February and March. I also want to thank everyone who opened up their homes to us during this time. We decided that when we were “on the road” and far from home, it didn’t make sense to drive home for a day only to head out again. As a result, we stayed with Limousin breeders in between sales, shows and annual meetings/banquets. We do appreciate the friendship and hospitality from those who opened up their homes. It was a nice change from the many motels we also stayed in during this time. We were busy during the months of March and April; however, the majority of the sales, annual meetings, and banquets were on the weekends. That
meant we could be home during most of the week. It gave us time to work on the Heart Beat, send out cards and letters, write a few thank-you notes, and make CD’s for all the breeders who held production sales. There is always something to do whether we are “on the road” or at home. The big event coming up in July is the National Junior Limousin Show & Congress (NJLS&C) hosted by the Heartland Limousin Association. We hope to see all of you in Grand Island for all or part of the week—July 1-7, 2017. We need LOTS of help. Get out your island clothing as we “Escape to Grand Island.” It will be a fun event! Wulf Cattle has generously donated meat for the Welcome dinner Sunday night as well as hamburger to be used throughout the week. THANK YOU for your donation. Randy Ratliff, R&R Marketing, has donated bottled water for the week. We appreciate this donation!
Meals will be provided for everyone at the show throughout the week. Breakfast and lunch will be served Sunday through Thursday. The Welcome dinner is Sunday and there will also be a meal and dance Thursday evening. There will be Hospitality throughout the week. This will be a place for people to relax over a cup of coffee, ice tea, lemonade and snacks. The Nebraska State Fairgrounds are top-notch. We know you will enjoy your stay in Grand Island. Borders is the headquarters; however, there are a variety of other motels as well as camping at the fairgrounds. There will NOT be a Heartland Regional Show this year, so we are encouraging ALL juniors to enter the NJLS&C show; either showing cattle, taking part in the satellite events, or coming to watch the events. It’s a great learning experience as well as an opportunity to get to know Limousin juniors from across the country!
Member News Our thoughts are with Phil Shipman of Girard, Kansas, and Jeff Steele of Unionville, Missouri, who are battling serious illnesses. They continue to undergo treatment. It was great to see Jeff and his wife, Angie, at Symens Brothers sale in February.
Our sympathy is extended to the families of Tom Smith of Sedalia, Missouri; Raymond Williamson of Thornfield, Missouri; and Barry Vig of Opal, South Dakota. Their obituaries are located on the Missouri and South Dakota state news pages in the Heart Beat.
Maggie Menzies Vaughn was born March 22, 2017, weighing 6 lbs. 3 oz. and measured 20 in. long. Parents are Craig and Kelly Vaughn and big brother, Weston, of Cavalier, ND. Grandparents are Tom and Rita Vaughn of Cavalier, ND, and Dan and Vickie Becvar of Fessenden, ND.
Elaine Yackley of Onida, South Dakota, sent me a Mexican Hot Dish recipe. According to Elaine, this quick and easy recipe is a family favorite.
Mexican Hot Dish 1 can cream of chicken soup 1 can Rotel tomatoes (don’t drain) 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 lb. Limousin hamburger, browned and drained 1 can green chilies (don’t drain) ½ bag (pieces crushed small) taco flavored Doritos (orange bag) • Stir all ingredients together. • If desired, add 1 can (rinsed) of black beans or your favorite bean. • Pour into a 9 in. sprayed pan (can be doubled). • Cover with lots of CoJack cheese. • Bake in a 350 degree oven until hot, about 25-30 minutes. • Serve with sour cream and a tasty green salad.
New App to Help Purchase Meat Products The Meat Institute has released a new app called MyMeatUp to assist consumers, particularly millennials, in becoming more comfortable and confident when purchasing meat products in the grocery store. The app is available for download on both Apple and Android devices and is the only free app available with a full guide to beef, pork, lamb, and veal cuts found in grocery stores, and it also includes cooking tips and recipes. In addition to the cuts guide, it features a searchable glossary of terms frequently used on meat and poultry product labels, including natural, grassfed, antibiotic-free and no hormones added, among others. The app also addresses common questions about the industry including antibiotic use in animal agriculture, animal welfare practices, environmental concerns and nutrition facts. The app has pages with food safety and preparation tips, along with a video guide to using a meat thermometer. The app can be downloaded by going to the App Store.

Brad Schutt Named Iowa Commercial Producer of the Year
B
rad Schutt of Alden, Iowa, was named the 2017 Iowa Commercial Producer of the Year. He was recognized at the Iowa Beef Expo Limousin sale in Des Moines February 15, 2017. His father, Fred, bought their first two Limousin cows back in 1985 and as they say, “the rest is history.” After buying a few more cows, they grew their herd by retaining their own heifers. Brad now has 100 head of registered purebred Limousin and LimFlex cows.
They start calving March 1, and Brad said he tries to keep 10 to 15 of their best heifers every year. The rest of the calves are sold at the Gowrie Livestock Auction the first part of September. Currently he uses mostly purebred bulls and Lim-Flex bulls that are 75% or higher Limousin. Brad says that he wants to keep a greater Limousin influence in his calves. When buying bulls, he tries to buy local whenever possible. He especially likes the calving ease and calf vigor with Limousin cows. Combined with a moderate frame,
it makes for easy keeping cows. Brad thinks that the biggest improvement the seedstock producers have made is with the improved disposition of these cattle. Brad said, “I want to thank my parents, Fred and Mary, for helping me get started in farming and starting my cow herd. I would also like to thank the Iowa Limousin Association for this award and for all the work they do promoting Limousin cattle.”
Congratulations to Brad Schutt of Alden, IA, upon his selection as the 2017 Iowa Limousin Association Commercial Producer of the Year .

Kansas News… KLBA Holds Annual Meeting in El Dorado The Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) held its annual meeting March 10, 2017, at the El Dorado Livestock Auction in El Dorado, Kansas. The recently remodeled barn provided a great atmosphere for the meeting and silent benefit auction prior to a select number of Limousin cattle being offered for sale Saturday, March 11.
Social Members of the KLBA gathered prior to the annual meeting for a time to socialize, enjoy a variety of snacks, and play some games. In addition, items for the silent auction were put on display and people could begin bidding. The bidding ended just before the sale on Saturday. There were several unique items on the auction including a K-State weather vane, pies, baskets of pepper jelly, toys, and a beautiful wooden shelf as well as semen and other cattle supplies.
Meeting KC Youngblood, president, welcomed everyone and presented the agenda for the meeting. The 2016 minutes and treasurer’s reports were read and approved. There was also a discussion of the tragic fires which swept through southwestern Kansas causing a horrific loss of livestock and feed supply for the ranchers near Ashland, Kansas. Dean Summerbell gave a report on Heartland activities and also an update on the 2017 National Junior Limousin Show & Congress in Grand Island, Nebraska. The show will run from July 1-7 and the Heartland Limousin Association will serve as the host. Volunteers will be needed to assist with the meals, help in the Hospitality area, and at other events throughout the week. We hope to see a large contingent of KLBA senior and junior members as we “Escape to Grand Island.”
Jerry Meek provided information on the advertising budget. He stated that the KLBA received coop funds from NALF for the advertising of the state sale. Randy Corns discussed the state sale. Other members of the sale committee are Alan Eggenberger and Kyle Dye. Clay Schilling congratulated the Kansas breeders and junior members for their success in the show ring. Kansas exhibitors have brought home champion and reserve champion banners in many shows. They have also been selected supreme or reserve supreme champion over all breeds, which is a big honor! Several fundraising ideas were discussed. Last year the raffle for the Traeger grill was successful. They also sold cards and the winner received half of the proceeds and the KLBA got the other half. The members felt they should try to sell raffle tickets for a grill again this year. The highlight of the weekend event was the induction of Jerry and Pat Meek, Pine Tree Acres Limousin, into the KLBA Hall of Fame. Congratulations to Jerry and Pat Meek for their many years of service to the KLBA membership and coordinating the Association sales and meetings.
Junior Field Day The juniors will hold their annual field day Sunday, June 4, 2017, in Eureka. Randy and Nancy Corns and Troy and Jennifer Richardson will serve as co-hosts for this event. This is always a fun time to renew friendships, enjoy time for fellowship, and view great cattle as they gear up for the summer show. Food will be provided the day of the show.

Jerry and Pat Meek Inducted into KLBA Hall of Fame
J
erry and Pat Meek of Pine Tree Acres Limousin, Parker, Kansas, were inducted into the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting in El Dorado March 10, 2017. They got started raising Limousin cattle in the early 1980s when they borrowed a Limousin bull from a good friend, John Pattimore, to breed some dairy-cross cows. They liked the muscle of the calves so much that they decided to start their own Limousin herd. In the summer of 1986, Pat attended the dispersal of Triple C Limousin (Mike Callahan’s dad). She purchased several Limousin females at that sale. From there, Jerry and Pat purchased a pen of heifers from Mike and Joyce Callahan at the Kansas Beef Expo. The first bull that they bought was a Michelin son from Wies Limousin Ranch of Wellsville, Missouri. Jerry learned how to artificial inseminate (AI) at a class in 1988 and ever since has been using some of the top sires in their AI program. Over the years, they have purchased females for herd building and show projects for their children, Pam and Ben, and their granddaughter, Kaylee Gum.
Some of the breeders they have purchased cattle from include J&C, GV Limousin, Tubb and David Ratliff, Ed Slusher, Walt Rolf, Symens Hills, Tom Rooney, Magness Land & Cattle, Coyote Hills Ranch, Wulf Cattle, Elmwood, Potterosa, Vorthmann Limousin, Bohi Cattle Co. and Pinegar Limousin. Their herd size has fluctuated over the years. They had a mature cow dispersal in 2000 due to Jerry’s hip replacements. Jerry and Pat have served the Limousin breed in many ways. They have managed the KLBA State Sale for 21 years, Jerry has been the announcer at many Kansas State Fair Limousin shows and Kansas junior shows. Jerry served as a member of the KLBA board of directors from 1992-1997 and from 2005-2010. He was president in 1994, 1995 and 2009-2010. During two of those terms, Kansas hosted the National Junior Limousin Show and Congress. Jerry has also served multiple terms on the Heartland Limousin Association board of directors. Pat served on the KLBA board from 1999-2004 and was president in 2001 and 2002. She took over the secretary/treasurer duties in 2012. In addition, they have also assisted
countless 4-H students in the beef program. They are always willing to help anyone in any way they could in the beef program, as well as other projects. Jerry and Pat both agree that the best thing about being involved in the Limousin breed are all of the wonderful people they have met, worked KLBA President KC Youngblood introduced the with and become great newest members of the KLBA “Hall of Fame,” Jerry friends with. and Pat Meek.
“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer? As we get ready for the 2017 NJLS&C and All-American Futurity July 1-7, 2017, in Grand Island, Nebraska, I looked back and discovered some interesting facts about the show 30 years ago. Do you know the answers to these questions? 1.) Where was the NJLS&C and All-American Futurity held in 1987? 2.) What was the name of the symposium that was held in conjunction with the NJLS&C and All-American Futurity? 3.) The exhibitors of the grand and reserve grand champion females came from the same state. Can you name the state? 4.) Can you name the junior and senior showmanship winners from 1987?

Moser Participated in the Riverview Agvocate Program Editor’s Note: Joanna Moser of Morris, Minnesota, the 2016 recipient of the Heartland Limousin Association scholarship, spent time working in the Riverview Agvocate Program last year. As a part of the scholarship, students are asked to spend time working at a farm, ranch, or an agriculture related business. Joanna wrote the following article about her experiences as an Agvocate for Riverview LLP. As being one of the Agvocates for Riverview LLP, I have had numerous opportunities to teach younger students about agriculture. I also learned how to promote agriculture in a positive way to get the message to the consumers. Through the Riverview Agvocate Program, many speakers were brought in to inform the Agvocates of what current issues are going on in the agriculture industry that have caused concern amongst the producers and consumers. Some current issues that were discussed were antibiotic free, hormone-free, cagefree chickens, buffer strips and non-GMO products.
Besides learning about the current issues, I also went into classrooms to teach students about agriculture. I taught a variety of lessons ranging from beef cattle, farm equipment, current issues, how to make cheese, and naming farm animals. These lessons were taught to kindergarten, first, second, third, and fourth grades, as well as 10th through 12th grades. Another task that was given was to lead a workshop about advocating for agriculture at the Minnesota State FFA Convention. Along with my teammates, I taught them how to be a good advocate for agriculture when talking to consumers. Overall, being part of the Agvocate program was a great experience. I learned many new ideas that will help me in my college career as well as after college. I thank the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA) for selecting me as the 2016 HLA scholarship recipient. I appreciate your support.
Joanna Moser of Morris, MN, participated in the Riverview Agvocate program. One skill learned was AI’ing.

In Memoriam Barry Vig, 67, of Opal, South Dakota, was killed in an airplane accident March 16, 2017. Funeral services were held March 27, 2017 at the Faith Community Center in Faith, South Dakota. He was born in Rapid City, South Dakota, the oldest of eight children. He attended school at Lemmon Butte and Opal, graduating from Newell High School in 1968. Barry attended South Dakota State University (SDSU), graduating with a degree in Animal Science in 1973. Barry completed the ROTC program at SDSU, and spent eight years in the Army Reserve. He was discharged as a First Lieutenant in 1981. In 1973, Barry and his wife, Cheryl, came home to the ranch. It was always very special to Barry that he was home again where he grew up and that part of his ranch was once owned by his Grandpa Weiss and the other part by his great-uncle Jim Vig. The Vigs introduced Limousin genetics into their cattle herd in 1970 and have been raising registered Limousin and commercial cattle ever since. In 2008, Barry was
Alexa Montagne of Elk Point, South Dakota, received the Heartland Limousin Association (HLA) scholarship at the HLA annual meeting and banquet in Des Moines, Iowa, February 14, 2017. She is a senior at Jefferson High School in Elk Point and plans to pursue a degree in Agricultural Business. Her goal is to attend a two-year college first and then go on to either South Dakota State University or Kansas State University. Alexa has been involved with her local FFA and 4-H clubs as well a variety of other activities including cheerleading, track, softball, livestock judging, the school play, and she is a member of the National Honor Society. Alexa is a member of the North American Junior Limousin Association, and she enjoys showing her cattle at various shows at the local, state, regional and national levels. honored by the North American Limousin Foundation at the National Western Stock Show for his 30 years of active membership. He went to an AI school in the late ’60s, and for many years he helped his parents with their AI program. He also played a major role in their family’s annual bull sales and later, with their private treaty sales. Barry was happy he was able to help his children get started in ranching and he felt blessed that he was able to work with his sons on the ranch. He truly enjoyed ranching and raising good cattle. Barry’s spiritual life was the most important thing of all to him. He taught Bible classes, preached a few sermons, and he even hosted some early-morning Bible studies out in his hanger. He was an active member of the Church of Christ, and he wanted to be known as a “ranching Christian.” He leaned to fly in college, and he always had a plane around to check cattle, both at home and in pastures away from home. He passed away in an airplane accident on his ranch, doing what he loved to do, with his cow dog, Hoots, right beside him. Barry is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Opal; children Georgia (Steve) Dale of Rapid City; Justin (Mellissa) of Opal; Marti Jo (Bucky) Derflinger of Opal; and Ryan of Opal; five grandchildren, three brothers, a sister, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob Mitchell Receives Cattleman of the Year Award
B
ob Mitchell was honored at the 2017 Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association Winter Conference February 17 at the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort in Wisconsin Dells. This award recognizes a cattleman (producer) from Wisconsin who has excelled in various areas of the state’s industry and exemplifies the ideals in what the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association would like to promote.
Criteria include accomplishments within the beef or dairy operations with commercial or seedstock production, exhibiting cattle at all levels, service and involvement in the Wisconsin Beef industry and participation in local, state, and national events. The Mitchell family operates Spring Creeks Cattle Company in southwest Wisconsin near Wauzeka in Crawford County. Bob started the operation by purchasing his first farm near Linden, Wisconsin in 1976 after growing up in town. In 1991 he purchased the first purebred cattle and transitioned the operation to Crawford County in the early 2000’s. The family’s 600-head seedstock and commercial cow-calf operation includes Bob and his wife, Rhonda, and the families of their three sons; Matt, Bart, and Scott. They raise Limousin, Lim-
Flex, Angus, and crossbred cattle. They sell replacement bulls and females in addition to marketing feeder cattle. The Mitchell family all take individual roles in the operation caring for the cattle and producing feed to support the cattle operation. They are also active exhibiting cattle throughout the state and at national shows. Recently, they have begun to include the third generation in helping with, caring for, and exhibiting cattle. In 2010, Spring Creeks Cattle Company was nominated for the national Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Seedstock Producer of the Year award. Bob has served on the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) board of directors for four terms, serving two years as president. Currently, Bob represents Wisconsin on the Cattlemen’s Beef
Board and serves on the operating and safety committees. Bob was nominated to the Cattlemen’s Beef Board by the Wisconsin Cattlemen’s Association and the Wisconsin Farm Bureau. He was appointed by the United States Secretary of Agriculture to begin his first term on the board in 2016.

Feeding Cattle Candy Saves Producers Cash
S
ome cattle eat grass, some eat corn, and others have more of a sweet tooth they satisfy by chowing down on candy and pastries. News circulated early in 2017 about a truck hauling Skittles to a producer in Wisconsin, where it was to be mixed into feed for cattle. Social media was abuzz with the strange thought of cattle tasting the rainbow. Apparently; however, the novelty of this story is not so unique. “For cattle, other than a taste difference, candy is not any different than including corn in the diet. They serve as an energy source for the cattle,” said Chris Richards, Oklahoma State University (OSU) Cooperative Extension Beef Cattle Nutrition Specialist. “The bacteria in the rumen of the cattle break down the candy into the same materials it would the starch in the corn they are fed.”
It is not just candy, either. “Cattle are well-equipped to utilize feed and forage resources that are not suitable for human consumption or use,” said Dave Lalman, OSU Cooperative Extension Beef Cattle Specialist. “Products include restaurant grease, grocery store unsold produce, outdated bread, water-damaged flour or cereal and on and on. And, of course…grass.” With compartmentalized stomachs, cattle can utilize a wide range of forage quality. The first compartment, the rumen, is where much of the magic happens. Carbohydrates, sugar in particular, are rapidly fermented in the rumen. This process transforms the sugar into volatile fatty acids. “These acids are then absorbed into the bloodstream and used for energy by different tissues,” Lalman said. “Consequently, blood sugar does not vary dramatically in ruminants compared to humans. It is highly regulated in ruminants.”
While the stomachs of cattle are impressive, they can only do so much. A diet strictly comprised of candy, doughnuts, or restaurant grease, for example, is not a good idea. “Nutritional expertise is required to create a balanced nutritional program, especially when dealing with feeds other than grazed forage,” Lalman said. “The diet needs to be carefully balanced to keep everything working in concert and minimize any risk of mineral imbalances or digestive upset.” Many of the forage materials carefully folded into cattle diets would otherwise be wasted. “They are either landfill material or can be repurposed for other industries,” said Richards. “It’s a win-win-win; the candy company gets some revenue, the environment wins by avoiding landfills, and the cattle get a great energy source that is tasty.”
