supporting 300 cows, private-treaty bulls and replacement females. The goal at Hunt Limousin Ranch is to “Conserve the land for future generations, keep current and knowledgeable on the leading cattle issues, provide high-quality cattle for a fair price, and treat people with honesty and integrity.” Collecting and utilizing performance records form the backbone of their business. When they started in the purebred Limousin business, the family developed the “Hunt Herd Manager” computer program to track breeding data, calf data, cow and sire data, mailing lists, customer purchases, and files where they can enter and track expected progeny differences (EPDs). The Hunt family believes strongly in total herd reporting, and do this through the North American Limousin Foundation’s Limousin Inventory Management System (LIMS) program. Throughout the years, the Hunt family has implemented programs

to stay on the cutting-edge of seedstock production. In 1995, they started a customer buy-back program. In 2000, when their son, Dan, graduated from the University of Nebraska and returned home to the ranch, they expanded their heifer development program, bull sales, embryo transfer work, and row-crop farming ventures. Hunt genetics have been used all over the globe, including Canada, Mexico, Australia and New Zealand. Bulls have been on display at the National Western Stock Show for the past 32 years. This family has been active at the local, state, regional and national levels. Dan and Charlie have served on the board of directors for the Nebraska Limousin Association, the Heartland Limousin Association, and the North American Limousin Foundation. They also exhibit cattle at the Nebraska State Fair, the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Classic, and the National Western Stock Show. Charlie and his wife, Nancy, have four children; David, Susan, Sally and Dan, and nine grandchildren.

through 30 original shows each year reaching more than 540,000 unique viewers annually. Kevin and his wife, Julie, have three children; Caitlyn, Ashlyn and Collin. Together they manage their herd of 125 registered Limousin and Lim-Flex cows and produce irrigated corn, alfalfa, and grass hay along the South Platte River. In addition to marketing bulls to commercial cow-calf operations, the Ochsner family also operates Ochsner Tenderlean Beef, a small branded-beef company that markets beef directly to consumers along the Front Range of Colorado.

Testing Shows Alfalfa’s Feed Value for Cows

C

ows may eat alfalfa enthusiastically, but testing samples for nutritional value is important for the health of the herd, says Andrew McCorkill, University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist. “Cows and horses think alfalfa looks like candy, smells like candy and tastes like candy,” McCorkill says in an Extension news release. However, not all hay that looks good is good hay. Not all good hay looks good. The only way to know is by testing samples to determine the nutritional value. McCorkill spoke at a recent MU Extension alfalfa tour. “Sometimes our forages are better than we think, but a lot of times they aren’t,” he says. Protein, energy and fiber content determine how livestock perform, he says. Alfalfa works as a good supplement for beef cows on mostly poor quality fescue hay. Some producers use it as a creep feed for calves as well. Livestock favor the early tender cuttings over later-season stems that are more brittle, tougher and contain more ingestible fiber. “Less mature cuttings tend to be more digestible,” he said.

Accurate results come from a good sampling process, McCorkill said. Always use a hay probe to take a core sample. Do not take random flakes or hand-grabbed samples. Take a sample from the round side of a round bale or the end of a square bale between ties. Probe between 10 and 20 bales and get a sample that weighs about a pound. Sort hay into lots of hay type. Do not mix cuttings, fields or types. “Alfalfa has an intrinsic value that is not explained by numbers alone. Livestock just perform on it if it’s fed properly,” McCorkill said.

HEARTBEAT AD RATES

President Shaun Edwards of the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association presented Dean and Beverly Summerbell with the MLBA Annual Arator Valley Farms Limousin Promoter Award for 2017. because of the lack of grass and no hay for winter feeding. Wheat crops were sparse, and what was there was rolled into feed bales. “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain” Warren Spahn and Johnny Sain pitched for the Boston Braves in the ’50s and were successful, but a lack of quality pitching after those two was lacking. They are now passed on, but praying for rain is still in vogue. In stark contrast is the crop destruction by tornadoes and large storms spawning hail and wind in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota, dashing the hopes of farmers expecting a great season. “Many hands make light work” I cannot say enough about how proud I am of the Heartland members who traveled to Grand Island, Nebraska, to ensure our Limousin juniors had a great time at the annual summer NALJA show. Every Heartland state sent volunteers to man the serving lines, set up the backdrops, decorate, and tear down at the end of the show. I especially want to thank Brenda and Grant Anderson for coordinating a great event. Their planning was superb and as far as the Heartland is concerned, a smashing success. Many compliments from NALJA exhibitors

were given and nary a criticism was heard. Thanks! A great part of the reason for so much success was due to the efforts of four Iowa couples: Ann and Roger Vorthmann, chairman; Dana and Becky Duckett, Tom and Charlene Doyle, and Bob and Mary Bosch. They put in many long hours working to provide delicious meals to everyone in attendance. An estimated 6,650 meals were served over six days (650700 meals were served Sunday night and approximately 500 the rest of the time). Sunday night, after the Welcome Meal, was particularly interesting. The cooking crew, plus Beverly and I, washed and dried roasters, cooking utensils, and pots and pans late into the night. At 4:30 am, the crew was up and preparing breakfast for the people. Your hard work and efforts did not go unnoticed. Thank you! Also thanks to my wife, Beverly, who maintained the coffee, cold drinks and snacks in the Hospitality area during the week. If there was any down time, she sold ice, made signs, supervised the children’s play area, and cleaned up with the help of the numerous volunteers from South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Kansas.

“Now down to business” At the board meeting in Grand Island, the Heartland Board of Directors voted to change printers. We welcome Modern Litho of Jefferson City, Missouri, who will print the Heart Beat and the SOURCE. We thank Ramsey Printing of Ottawa, Kansas, for their service for the past several years. We also are fortunate to have the continued service of Mary Quigley of Precision Marketing and their team. We could not achieve what we have with the paper without her invaluable help. Thank you Mary! New advertising rates are printed in the Heart Beat on page 4. We have not increased the rates for 12 years and as costs continue to rise, our advertising rates were increased $50 an ad. During the summer, the Heartland lost a great friend. Ron Holland of Wichita, Kansas, passed away. He was a great supporter of the Heartland junior program providing scholarships for five HLA juniors to attend college. We shall miss Ron for his friendship, grace and support. We are starting our 18th year working for the Heartland Limousin Association. We hope to make it the best year yet. Thanks for your support!

ACHH Diamond 82D

A special thanks to Mark and Marian Nutter of Thedford, Nebraska, for their invaluable work wherever it was needed. They helped with the set-up, clean-up and a variety of other things during the week. “Prepare for things unseen” I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who contributed their talents to make sure we had the necessary funds to carry out a successful show. NEBRASKA, MINNESOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, IOWA, MISSOURI, WISCONSIN AND KANSAS, each contributed $5,000 to the cause. In addition, sponsorships helped us plan and provide for a great show. Thank you to Wulf Cattle, Magness Land & Cattle, Linhart Limousin and R&R Marketing for going the extra mile with their extraordinary donations to ensure the show’s success. Many other sponsors also made significant donations to the cause. THANK YOU! I want to thank Bill Angell, Livestock Superintendent of the Nebraska State Fair, and his staff for going beyond the call of duty to make sure that everything went smooth as far as the facilities, tieouts, show ring and stalling barn were concerned. The fairgrounds were topnotch. Thank you! “A lesson learned” Gators are a man’s best friend. Need I say anymore?

By Bev Summerbell

D

ean Martin sang a fun song titled “Memories are Made of This” many years ago. I’m sure we all left the 2017 NALJA show in Nebraska with many fond memories from our “Escape to Grand Island.” Although we didn’t spend our time “on the beach,” we did spend time in the wonderful facilities at the Nebraska State Fairgrounds with our Limousin friends and family from across the United States. It truly was a memorable week! In his column, “Covering Ground,” Dean thanked many of the people who helped to make this

an amazing show. Everything was top-notch, from the facilities to the decorations, food, hospitality, and friendly spirit exhibited by the juniors, their families, friends and Limousin enthusiasts. I would like to add my THANK YOU to everyone who helped to make this such a successful event! Words cannot express my appreciation to the many people from the Heartland states who worked tirelessly to make sure our Limousin exhibitors and others in attendance left with many fond memories.

A few “interesting” things happened during the week. Every day we served snacks and beverages in the Hospitality area. One day we put out small bags of beef jerky that had been donated. A breeder told us that he ate some of the jerky, but he thought it tasted terrible. He asked his sons what the “white stuff ” was that he saw sprinkled on the strips of jerky. They replied, “We poured the seasoning packet on it.” Upon further inspection of the packet, this is what it said: Do Not Eat, Ageless, Oxygen Absorber. The father didn’t think that was funny. Needless to say, we all had a good laugh.

There was a children’s Play Place in the Hospitality area. That was a big hit with the younger ones at the show. One 2-year-old was playing in the sandbox (sand in a kiddy pool) and didn’t want to leave when her Mom said it was time to watch her

older brother show his heifer. She thought it would be better to stay with “Grandma Bev” (and three other grandmas; Shirley, Judy and Pat) and play. There were several children playing, and at one point she asked where her Mommy had gone. After we told her, a 4-year-old boy replied, “Her is coming back to get you tomorrow night.” We had a chuckle about that when her Mom returned. I think I am “jinxed” when it comes to eating at restaurants. We were eating supper with friends in Grand Island and I ordered chicken parmigiana. When our food arrived I got the side dish of spaghetti but no chicken. When I asked the waiter about my chicken he checked with the cooks, came back, and said, “They cut up your chicken and put it on top of the shrimp scampi that was served to another guest.” My chicken arrived, just as we were ready to leave, so it made it into a “to-go” box. I guess that’s one way to go on a diet. We went from being on an “Island” this year with our theme, “Escape to Grand Island,” to celebrating “Christmas in July” next year, July 14-20, in Denver, Colorado. It will be another fun, memorable week with our juniors, their families, and many other Limousin enthusiasts.

Roger & Ann Vorthmann Inducted into Iowa Limousin Association “Hall of Fame” Roger and Ann Vorthmann, Vorthmann Limousin, of Treynor, Iowa, were inducted into the Iowa Limousin Association “Hall of Fame” on Saturday evening, June 17, 2017. The ceremony took place in conjunction with the Iowa Limousin Association junior field day in Osceola, Iowa. The Vorthmann’s were recognized for their significant contribution to the advancement of Limousin cattle in Iowa and the surrounding region as well as for their leadership. Roger and Ann’s first experience with Limousin genetics began when they helped Roger’s sister, Lynette, select a Limousin-cross steer as a 4-H project. In 1976 they purchased their first Limousin bulls for their commercial cow-herd. Once Roger saw the stoutness and performance of those first Limousin influence calves, he was hooked! As a family, Roger, Ann and their children, Chad, Deb and Erica, were consistent attendees and contenders at state, regional and national shows. Chad’s first 4-H beef project was two Limousin heifer calves. Limousin heifers and cows continued to be purchased and the commercial cow herd was phased out. From 1988-2004, the family “vacationed” at every National Junior Limousin Show and rarely missed attending the American Royal in Kansas City, the NAILE in Louisville, Kentucky; or the National Western Stock Show in Denver, Colorado. Chad, Deb, and Erica each won senior showmanship at the National Junior Limousin Show, and each earned multiple grand and reserve grand champion honors. Roger and Ann have been devoted leaders within the Iowa Limousin Association, serving on the ILA board as secretary and president, as IJLA advisors, and as the Iowa Beef Expo Sale Coordinator. In addition, they have also coordinated four national junior shows and have been in charge of the hospitality at six of them. Beyond Iowa, Roger served two terms on the NALF Board of Directors and they both have served on the Heartland Limousin Association board. In addition,

Congratulations to Roger and Ann Vorthmann of Treynor, IA, upon their induction into the Iowa Limousin Association’s Hall of Fame. Grant Anderson (left) presented the award. they are active members of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Treynor, Westfair, and their community. The Vorthmanns have been recognized as the ILA “Producer of the Year,” the ILA “Breeder of the Year”, the ILA “Seedstock Producer of the Year,” the 2005 NALJA “Honorary Member,” the 2006 ICA “Seedstock Producer of the Year,” the Pottawattamie County Cattlemen’s “Producer of the Year,” the Iowa “Master Pork Producer”, the West Pottawattamie 4-H “Family of the Year,” and the Council Bluffs Kiwanis “Outstanding Young Farmer.” Roger and Ann have been active promoters and supporters of Limousin genetics through their cattle herd and children, junior members and activities, and leadership positions. Their past experience in the Limousin breed makes them invaluable assets for the future growth of Limousin cattle within and beyond Iowa.

We express our thanks to Troy and Jennifer Richardson and Randy and Nancy Corns for organizing the junior field day June 4, 2017, at the Greenwood County Fairgrounds in Eureka. It was a very successful event!

“Back in Time” Do You Know the Answer?

Answers:

1.) The gentlemen in the middle is Gail “Tubb” Ratliff of Westphalia, Kansas, president of the Kansas Limousin Breeders Association (KLBA) in 1983-194. 2.) The other two pictured are Mina Slusher, secretary/treasurer, and Ed Slusher, vice president of the KLBA in 1983-1984, of Osage City, Kansas. 3.) The photo was taken from the 1983-1984 Member Directory. Thanks to Chris Campbell of Tongonaxie, Kansas, for sharing this book with us. Questions on page 5.

Words from the President “Tubb” had a very interesting letter in the Member Directory with his thoughts on being a member of a state association. He said, “The singular purpose or mission of any state Limousin association is to PROMOTE Limousin cattle. The tools you may use are field days, shows, sales, area breeder maps and local advertising.” “Tubb” also stated, “A state Limousin association is an organization made up of committed volunteers who are caught up in a mission that they believe in. They make a personal investment of their time and talent. They experience joy found in giving of themselves to each other for a common cause.” He went on to say, “Don’t just join, but give yourself to the state association. Only then will you discover what’s in it for you. There’s tremendous power in truly committed people. The success or failure of any association is determined entirely by the time and talent volunteered by the breeders.”

opportunity to learn from some of the industry’s most talented leaders.”

NALJA Show T-Shirts Jennifer Richardson, Kansas Junior Advisor, did a wonderful job selling the 2017 NALJA “Escape to Grand Island” souvenir t-shirts. They were a big hit with the juniors and their families. We appreciate your hard work organizing this project!

Minnesota News… 18th Annual MN Beef Expo The 18th annual Minnesota Beef Expo will take place at the state fairgrounds in St. Paul October 19-22, 2017. Each year a breed is selected as the “Featured Breed.” This year there will be two breeds sharing this honor, the Limousin and South Devan. Members of both associations will be busy throughout the Expo assisting with the shows, sales and satellite events, serving meals, and being ambassadors for the cattle industry.

The Expo has grown over the years, expanding in numbers, exhibits, events and shows. The highlight of the Expo is the Minnesota Youth Beef Experience Program (MYBEP). Comfortable Cattle Provide Better Quality Beef

A

ttendees at a cattle stewardship conference in northwest Iowa heard a common, simple message from speakers, that when taken to heart, can improve a farm’s economic bottom line: comfortable cattle perform better and consequently, are more profitable. “Cattle producers are involved in a number of practices ranging from weaning and vaccinating to providing daily care and dealing with day-to-day climate change,” said Beth Doran, program organizer. “When animal handling is performed correctly and using good stewardship, potential stress

on both the animal and the producer is greatly reduced.” The program featured sessions on six topics—dealing with pain management, designing comfortable cattle facilities, low-stress weaning, processing cattle, managing heat stress, and performing a feedlot assessment. Doran, who also is Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef specialist in northwest Iowa, points out that comfortable, stressfree cattle result in beef that’s more tender and juicy, important qualities for consumer satisfaction.

Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction April 8, 2017, in Lebanon, Missouri. This family owned operation, based near Jefferson City, Missouri, has been in the commercial cattle business for the past 35-40 years. During the past 15 years, they have used registered Limousin and Lim-Flex bulls on their Angus based cow herd. Strope Farms currently runs approximately 100 brood cows, about 18 bred heifers, 20+ open heifers and five herd sires. They develop and keep back replacement heifers from within their herd genetics. They market their steers through the Callaway Livestock Auction, receiving at or near the top price for them.

They have purchased bulls from Kautsch Limousin, Junkans Limousin Farm and Fitzpatrick Limousin. Their operation is truly a family adventure including Don and Dorothy, their son, Scott, son-in-law, Dennis, along with their spouses and grandchildren who all assist in the work at the farm. Don is very positive about the use of his Limousin and LimFlex bulls. He is quick to point out how much the quality of his herd has improved since using Limousin sires.

Missouri News... MLBA Inducts Charles and Debbie Youngblood into Missouri “Hall of Fame” Charles and Debbie Youngblood of Carthage, Missouri, were inducted into the Missouri Limousin Breeders Association (MLBA) “Hall of Fame” on April 8, 2017, at the MLBA annual meeting, banquet and benefit auction in Lebanon, Missouri. In their early years, the Youngblood’s worked in the fertilizer business and raised commercial cattle. Things changed when they began their search for 4-H show heifers for their four children; Cindy, Brian, KC, and Scott. They purchased their first Limousin heifers from Bob and Lilly Ullum. Not only did they buy the show heifers, but they went on to purchase the entire herd of 38 registered Limousin females from the Ullum family in 1985. For the past 32 years, Charles and Debbie have devoted their energy and passion for Limousin cattle as a mechanism to raise their children and serve as a role model in their

community. They were extensively involved in the local 4-H, FFA, and Missouri Junior Limousin Association while raising their children. Debbie served as Beef Superintendent for the Jasper County Fair. For many years, the family vacations consisted of showing cattle at local county fairs, the Ozark Empire Fair, the Missouri Limousin Field Day and the Missouri State Fair. Currently, they maintain approximately a 60 head cow herd, keeping back replacement heifers and their best bulls for sale. Their cow herd is evenly split between spring and fall calving. Although they do some AI work, they continue to purchase high quality Limousin herd sires that exhibit good muscle development, very docile temperament, and good maternal traits. Red cattle remain their niche; however, they do have some black Limousin and a few Lim-Flex. Over

Congratulations to Charles and Debbie Youngblood of Carthage, MO, who are the newest members of the Missouri Limousin Hall of Fame. Making the presentation was Paul Junkans (left) and T.J. Callahan (right). the years they have sold bulls via private treaty to approximately 140 different individuals. In addition to the cattle, Charles and his youngest son, Scott, have a farm based dirt/excavation business. They also raise and train Australian Shepherd dogs. Charles and Debbie gave each of their children a Limousin heifer at the age of two. From that initial investment, each child cultivated

their own business venture as they proceeded through life. All of their children are now married and raising their own families. The real enjoyment for Grandpa and Grandma now is to attend their grandchildren’s cattle showing adventures.

Nebraska News… Husker/Harvest Days Husker/Harvest Days, one of the premier agricultural shows in the upper Midwest, will be September 12-14, 2017, in Grand Island, Nebraska. This event features one of the largest displays of farm and ranch machinery and equipment of any show. Cattle from various breeds will be on display in addition to the demonstrations and equipment. For the 32nd year in a row, Hunt Limousin Ranch of Oxford, Nebraska, will have a pen of Limousin cattle along with literature about the breed. They invite you to stop by and say hello. The show has grown and developed since its beginning back in 1978. Today, there are more than 100,000 visitors

who attend throughout the three days of the show. This show combines traditional values with openness to new ideas and innovation.

Thank You Bill We want to thank Bill Angell, Livestock Superintendent of the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, and his crew for their hard work and effort helping ensure a successful NALJA show this year. The facilities were top-notch, and Bill and his crew worked tirelessly assisting the juniors, their families, and other Limousin enthusiasts who traveled to Nebraska. We heard many positive comments about the barn, show ring, and other buildings. Thank You!

Bullis Creek Places in Sandhills Competition Rob and Brenda Brawner, Bullis Creek Ranch of Wood Lake, Nebraska, took part in the 2017 Sandhills Cattle Association Educational, Performance, and Carcass (EPC) Contest. The awards banquet for the 35th annual contest, put on by the Sandhills Cattle Association, was held August 2, 2017, in Valentine, Nebraska. Feed, health, gain, profitability and carcass data was collected and the cattle were ranked in four divisions.

The divisions were carcass, gain, profitability and overall. This is the 19th year Bullis Creek Ranch has participated in this contest, and they have won five champion or reserve champion titles in the past. They entered six head in this year’s contest and placed in the top five in all categories including reserve champion in the Best 3 Head category. South Dakota News... South Dakota Sales

The annual gathering of Limousin producers April 12 at the Peterson’s L7 Bar Production sale in Pukwana, SD.

Zilverberg Competes in the Senior Games John Zilverberg, age 103, of Highmore, South Dakota, was the oldest competitor at the National Senior Games held in June in Birmingham, Alabama. He competed in the shot put, discus, hammer throw and javelin as well as the bowling competition. John was featured on ESPN TV Sports Center’s “Top 10 Plays of the Week.” This spry man and former

cattle rancher recently visited an assisted living facility and told the “kids” that he was not quite ready to make the move. John’s son, Don and his wife, Peg, raise registered Limousin, LimFlex and Hereford cattle on their ranch by Highmore, South Dakota. John enjoys attending their annual production sale every February.

Treftz Limousin Featured in The Cattle Business Weekly

A great crowd of buyers evaluated the Ludens family production offering prior to their April 1 sale.

Curt Wieczorek of Mount Vernon, SD, Jerry Wulf of Morris, MN, and John Symens of Amherst, SD, attended the Peterson’s L7 Bar sale.

Treftz Limousin of Wetonka, South Dakota, was featured in the May 17, 2017, edition of The Cattle Business Weekly “Ranch Feature.” In 1983, Glenn purchased his first registered Limousin bull. Treftz Limousin got their start when they bought their ranch in northeastern South Dakota, near Wetonka, in 1990. In addition to working on the ranch and raising cattle, Glenn also worked for 27 years for the Department of Labor. What started as a “hobby” has now grown into a 150 head of purebred registered Limousin cows. Offspring are

sold across the U.S., Mexico and Canada. Treftz Limousin holds their annual “Where Muscle Still Matters” sale at the ranch the second Saturday in February. Glenn said that the breed has come a long way from the 1970’s. It is more than just lean beef. Animals now feature greatly improved docility, females with volume milk, and easy fleshing ability to graze the pastures. According to Glenn, putting on a sale is a lot of work; however, he enjoys delivering the bulls to his customers. He says that he has made some lifelong friendships over the years with many of the families who have purchased Limousin genetics from Treftz Limousin. “You don’t know where you are going if you don’t know where you’ve been,”

is a phrase Glenn uses to explain a lot of the data they accumulate. With the introduction of DNA testing, there’s more to selecting breeding stock than just looking at the animal. Using artificial insemination is a way to look at bulls and find out which ones will compliment or help “fix” a cow. The Treftz family includes Lori, a nurse at Manor Care in Aberdeen, son, Dustin who works at Glacial Lakes Energy and lives in Leola; daughter, Courtney, who works for the Department of Social Service in Rapid City; and son, Reece, a sophomore at Ipswich High School. As the Treftz crew drives through their new crop of calves, anticipation builds for 2018.

South Dakota Juniors Exhibit at Summer Spotlight Show The South Dakota Summer Spotlight Show was held at the South Dakota State Fairgrounds the weekend of July 21-23, 2017. This all-breed show featured not only cattle but also swine and sheep. The fairgrounds were teeming with activity on the day of the show. It was a hot, humid 92 degrees on show day, Saturday, July 22, 2017, as the seven Limousin juniors exhibited their heifers and steers before Kyle Roseboom, University of Minnesota judging coach. Roseboom remarked on the depth of quality.

Alexa Montagne of Elk Point exhibited the reserve grand champion Lim-Flex female with DJ Dazzle Me, a 3/12/16 black, homozygous polled daughter of EXAR Classen.

The grand champion Limousin female was L7 Dixieland Delight 604D, a 3/25/16 black, polled daughter of Wulfs Xcellsior 252X exhibited by Memphis Peterson of Pukwana.

Memphis Peterson also captured reserve grand champion purebred honors with L7 Dancing Queen 680D, a 9/8/16 black, polled daughter of Bubba Watson.

Delaney Peterson of Chamberlain exhibited the grand champion LimFlex female with L7 Dakota Maid 615D, a 3/18/16 red, polled daughter of Wulfs Xcellsior.

The grand champion Limousin steer, Bullwinkle, belonged to Mitchell Schmidt of Willow Lake. Bullwinkle is a 1,180-lb. son of Addiction.

Reserve grand champion steer honors went to Durango, a 1,360-lb. son of BoJo exhibited by Ty Bergh of Florence.

The showmanship winners were Alexa Montagne, champion; Delaney Peterson, reserve champion; and Mitchell Schmidt was third.

Regular Schedule Gets Calves to the Bunk

“G

etting calves used to eating a grain diet involves feed preparation, feed presentation, and management decision that will help stimulate appetites”, according to Twig Marston, beef business development and field support specialist at BioZyme. As you determine the diet you will put your weaned calves on, make sure it is a highly palatable, nutrient-dense ration. Be sure the feed is fresh and has a good texture and flavor, Marston said in a news release. Making sure you have clean, accessible bunks the calves can comfortably eat from is important to make sure they all get to the bunk to eat. Make sure the bunks are the right height for calves to easily get their heads into and eat from without adding stress to their experience. Be sure the bunks are free from stale feed, dirt and manure. Establish a signal to let the calves know it is feeding time and that feed is waiting for them. This can be a loud calf call, a whistle or bucket rattle that you use each time you feed them. They will get accustomed to hearing this signal and associate it with feeding time. It is important to establish a regular feeding schedule with your calves. They will be used to eating at specific times. Feeding them twice daily will keep the feed fresher in the bunk. When delivering feed to the calves, make sure to mix and evenly distribute the feed in the bunk. Calves will get more evenly distributed intake if the grain is spread evenly instead of most of it being dumped in one end and then spread along the rest of the bunk. “Follow these steps, and you should have healthy, growing calves,” Mattson said.

Curt Wieczorek of Mt. Vernon, SD, purchased the second high-selling bull from Gordy Ludens.

Jay Langdeau (center) with his son, Cash, and daughter, Bailey, of Ft. Pierre, SD, purchased one of the highselling bulls from Gordy Ludens.

Dear Heartland members and friends, US is a short word, just two letters. U could mean YOU and S is SOMEONE. We all have been part of an US within a family or other group of people in our lives. Strength is brought about through people...those who want to belong...to play a part...to contribute and be recognized as US Heartland people. What had limitations within a state, a regional group could do. Thus, the Heartland Limousin Association was formed and to gain ground we all “pulled on the same rope” as a board, as a staff and as committed Heartland members. Through this group, people have become acquaintances... acquaintances have become friends, and friends have become our Limousin family. It’s this family that came together to host an event such as “Escape to Grand Island.” With our committed leadership, our various talents and abilities, and just plain work, a great National Junior Limousin Show & Congress was the successful result. Thank you, Heartland people for the belief in our community that we can each do our part. It is impossible to accomplish anything worthwhile without the help of other people and each time we go looking for them we find YOU (U) and SOMEONE (S).
