Lights always excited me. I always wanted to do a project on lamps in my college design projects but somehow it never materialized. Then came graduation project which is technically the last project at college and I was very confused as the indecisive person that I am. I have always done bags and fashion accessories and wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sure if I wanted to do the same. Then my teacher told me about Orange Tree and I loved their work at first sight. I also had Episode silverware as an option but his sounded more exciting and was something I always wanted to do. Graduation Project in context of Accessory Design essentially means that you get to design an exclusive range of products, be a part of product development team, learn about the design and manufacturing processes, and see how a design house works. INDUSTRY BRIEF

I worked on three projects at Orange Tree. 1. To combine different materials and design a contemporary range of lamps and home decor for spring collection. 2. Design lamps and home decor and accent furniture based on a Aztec print story for Monsoon collection. 3.To design a range of lamps and home decor taking inspiration from Indian flaura and fauna for the Diwali collection.

INITIAL RESEARCH

I was briefed about the company in the first week of my graduation project and was asked to do a market research. I visited many lighting stores in Delhi like vis-a-vis, Khan market, Address homes, apartment 9, Fabindia, Good earth, Oma, Home center, Home town, Kapoor lighting etc.

Many good designs get dropped because of the production parameters as they don't have their own manufacturing unit for metal. Many designs require a dye to be made and therefore the design gets changed or doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get sampled because of unavailability of dyes. Orange Tree follows the international trends for home decor and lighting. They also come up with their own story for a collection and fuse the two.

I also saw products of our competitors online on Pepperfry, Fabfurnish, Urban Ladder. Tom Dixon, Foscarini, Louis poulsen are amaong few other design houses that I looked up. Orange Tree is known for its exclusivity and quality. They cater to people who want to taste contemporary design at a fairly affordable price. Their target customer group is the upper middle class.

Metal is Orange Treesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; favorite material. Most of my developments were in metal as they have a strong metal vendor base in Muradabad.The other major material that they work on is wood. Orange tree believes in combing different materials and finishes together.

Design Parameters There were no restrictions on design but many initial concepts got dropped because of manufacturing difficulties. I have played with simple forms, materials and finishes. Basic forms can be sampled easily and therefore later I was asked to do geometric forms.

Design Criteria The designs should be simple yet very contemporary and not the run of the mill. I tried to add different finishes and combine different material to make the product look exclusive. In these collections I have used a lot of Gold and Copper as Copper is in trend.

Kalif Hanging Lamp The shape of the lamp is inspired from the black jug above, I fused the two elements which is, the handle and flask This concept was taken forward as a hanging lamps with different frame shapes like hexagon, semicircle and triangle. See facing page.

The shape of the lamp has changed slighting because of manufacturing issues. A dye for the same was not available. This lamp has black tinted glass with copper plating base.

Aglop Floor Lamp This floor lamp is inspired from a caterpillar. It is an ambient light and has LED inside. Looks beautiful when it glows.

Zenns Floor / Table Lamp This lamp is inspired from basic shapes. Its in copper finish with Black frame.

JOY Tea Light Holders

Tea Light Holder This range for Diwali has Flora and Fauna. Bright colors like red are perfect for Diwali and these animal forms look lovely when light passes through them.

Garden Sticks and T-light holder . Butterfly, hummingbird and dragonfly in three colors red white and blue. This gets inserted in soil easily and looks lovely in day and in the evening with tea light it lights up the surrounding.

CONCLUSION

Lights always excited me, getting an opportunity to work on lamps was like a dream come true. I thoroughly enjoyed my work at Orange Tree. Orange Tree gave me the opportunity to experiment and explore. I was unaware of my own capabilities as a designer and Orange Tree helped me realize that. I worked in all domains and they made a part of important decisions. I have learned a lot and explored a field I always wanted to. I learned about sampling and production, I also got a chance to visit Moradabad twice which is their vendor base and learnt how things get done and designs change and get dropped due to manufacturing difficulties. This has been a great experience, very exciting indeed!
