A Record-Breaking Sale

In the heart of South Mississauga’s prestigious waterfront lies a residence that redefines luxury living. Recently sold for a record-breaking price, this one-of-a-kind property represents not only the pinnacle of architectural design but also a testament to the growing allure of Mississauga’s lakeside real estate.

Perched on over 1.2 acres of prime waterfront land, with an additional 1.8 acres of riparian rights, this newly constructed masterpiece redefines luxury living. Boasting nearly 300 feet of lake frontage, the property offers 13,168 square feet of living space, including 5+2 bedrooms and 12 bathrooms. Its resort-style amenities, such as a concrete dock for a 45-foot yacht, an indoor pool, and an expansive theatre, elevate it to the pinnacle of lakeside luxury.

But selling a home of this caliber requires more than a listing—it demands expertise, precision, and a network that reaches the most discerning buyers.

How We Achieved this Record-Breaking Sale

• Innovative Strategies: Curated presentations and private showings highlighted the property’s exclusivity.

• Discretion and Trust: Balancing privacy and visibility, we ensured confidentiality while reaching the right audience.

CAMPANELLI RICK

The Wind Blows The Hardest At The Top Of The Mountain

When it comes to remaining genuine in what might be called the “performance culture” of media, I’ve often felt that those in the public eye have a tough row to hoe.

The competitive nature of the TV-media scene puts a lot of pressure on a person who, to put it simply, is like any other human – with typically human flaws, fears and insecurities. You are encouraged to be aspirational and to maintain a stance of power and control, while those you trust continually remind you that “you have this incredible opportunity,” or “do you know how many people want to be where you are?” – and my personal favourite, “you now have a platform.”

What’s remarkable about Rick Campanelli is how untouched he seems by the madness of the professional world he inhabits. From the first moment you meet him, it’s clear that the man you’ve watched on the screen is the real thing. Fondly nicknamed “Rick the Temp” during his early days on MuchMusic, he has this innate ability to make everyone around him feel at ease.

Yet like so many other public figures, beyond the charismatic television persona lies a deeper, more nuanced story. Campanelli had to navigate the pressures of a television career during a time when his personal life was turned upside down. However, this story is not about failure, nor is it a fluff story about fame; it’s about a man who realized his aspirations and faced his challenges with grace and sheer determination.

Rick grew up in Hamilton, Ontario, the youngest of four siblings in an Italian-Canadian household. From a young age, he had a natural talent for making people laugh. He aspired to a life beyond the Steel City and never shied away from hard work, landing his first job in grade seven delivering the Italian newspaper Corriere Canadese. In high school, his passion for music overshadowed his academic pursuits. He would borrow his older siblings’ vinyl and listen to the music of The Eagles, Queen and The Police. He spent hours curating mixtapes and hosting imaginary radio shows in his bedroom – perhaps foreshadowing his later career.

As a student at Brock University in 1994, where he was majoring in physical education and minored in fine arts, he entered MuchMusic’s contest search for who could be the perfect temp. The challenge was to write 25 words on why you are the right fit for the job. (Writing any more than 25 words would instantly disqualify

you.) He secured the position and “Rick the Temp” quickly became a fan favourite, going on to interview top musicians and entertain audiences nationwide.

Rick brought genuine enthusiasm to every moment. He wasn’t just a host; he felt like a friend that was as excited as his viewers to meet the artist behind the music. When I asked him about some of his memorable interviewees, he cited Dave Grohl and Anthony Kiedis. Both rockstars were personable and friendly, and Rick adds that Kiedis was always spontaneous so you never knew what was going to happen.

Campanelli was a part of the golden era of MuchMusic, a time when the network was really about the music, still untouched by reality television or corporate agendas. The station’s VJs were like ambassadors of what was cool and relevant in the cultural zeitgeist.

Rick credits mentors like Steve Anthony, Master T and Erica Ehm for paving the way for him, and has an admirable “no regrets in life” philosophy. From his point of view, you only get one life to live, but if you live it to the fullest, one is enough. He quotes a favourite quip of his dad’s: “The mountain isn’t going to move for you; you have to go to the mountain.”

As MuchMusic evolved, so did Rick. The eternal “Temp” spent 11 years at MuchMusic, eventually establishing himself as a versatile broadcaster, and made a lasting impression on the station’s legacy. After leaving MuchMusic, he moved on to host shows like ET Canada and solidified his status as a household name.

As Rick’s career skyrocketed, so did the pressures of fame. Inherently a shy person, he battled with the challenges of fame and his public image. The quick pace of life and the pressure to constantly remain

“on” can so easily get to you, and by his late twenties, he found himself turning to alcohol to cope with those feelings. This dark period was further compounded by the pain of divorce, which added a profound sense of loss to an already overwhelming time. What started as a way to deal with stress soon became a heavier burden. Rick realized that this was something that was going to get in the way of who he wanted to be, and with the help of family and friends, he began the journey to eliminate alcohol from his life.

It’s often true that the struggles you face in your own life make you a more empathetic person to others, and this was clearly true for Rick. He began speaking openly about his journey, flaws and all. There is strength in vulnerability; his candour inspires many others in similar positions.

complex people can be. His honesty resonated with me on such a profound level. We all live in a world that is filled with augmented images and misleading content that leaves us feeling confused and often inadequate.

Off-camera, Rick is a devoted husband and father of three. In his spare time, he told me, he likes to spend as much time as possible with family, doing absolutely nothing or everything depending on the day. He credits his wife, Angie, for supporting him through some of the darkest times in his life. Today, he is involved in charitable organizations that include World Vision Canada, SickKids and Food4Kids.

Rick has cemented himself as a cultural icon, representing a golden era of Canadian pop culture. He currently serves as a host on CHFI-FM Toronto and Breakfast Television. And soon, we’ll be able to hear his story in his own words, as Rick is writing a memoir about his life and career. He is also joining the team at this magazine as a celebrity contributor, and I will be honoured to call him a colleague. Rick is truly an inspiration and a reminder to chase your dreams – or as his dad would say, run to the mountain and climb it.

FOR Owner Linda Dolman

SMALL is ScottRyan Makes It Personal BEAUTIFUL

Oakville-based ScottRyan Design Build Inc. takes a personal approach to their work that turns each new build and renovation they take on into a true passion project.

Scott Townsend and Ryan Rodrigues, the two partners at the helm of Oakville-based ScottRyan Design Build Inc., may still be young, but between them they offer some 50 years of experience in the design and construction industry. The company has been building custom-tailored homes and high-quality renovations in the western GTA and Oakville for over 15 years now, and over that time has developed a solid reputation for exceptional customer relationships and the care and skill that goes into their work.

Current Page: Elegant bespoke houses like this beautiful Oakville home, completed in 2023, have become a ScottRyan specialty.

Previous Page: Left: In this open-concept kitchen/family dining area, oak wide-plank flooring blends beautifully with the darker walnut used on the kitchen island, the cabinetry in the family room and the dining area’s coffered ceiling. Recessed lighting in the dining room ceiling and the shelves of the family room lend a relaxing glow at night. Right: This spacious, sunlightdrenched ensuite offers a stunning treetop view while relaxing in the bath.

Current Page: The ensuite for an elegant home in King City by Kimberley Seldon Design Group features an unusual, yet warm and luxurious touch: herringbone hardwood floors throughout.

Next Page: This sleek, minimalist home amply illustrates ScottRyan’s expertise with a wide range of building styles ranging from the contemporary to the traditional. Designed by Keeren Design.

Ryan’s blood; in a way, he grew up in the business. Starting at the age of 14, Ryan spent his summers building fences and decks for his brother-in-law’s company, a job that continued right up until he entered Sheridan College, where he earned his undergrad degree in finance.

Ryan has a father who is an architect and an older brother who is a structural engineer; they work together in a small firm in Toronto. “Sometimes it feels like I grew up on job sites,” he laughs. The family connection, he goes on to say, led to his first professional opportunity, project-managing a custom home.

Scott’s dad may not have worked in the construction industry, but he had an exceptional skill and passion for hands-on work and passed that keen interest on to his son.

respective areas of study, but discovered their hearts weren’t in it; they missed building things. That’s when fate stepped in: they each quit their jobs and enrolled in the Construction Management program at George Brown, where they first met and became friends.

“Everything we do is customized to each client’s individual needs.”
– Scott Townsend

When Scott was just a kid, he and his father built their family cottage from the ground up, and the pair often worked on projects together.

Throughout his high school years, Scott continued to build his experience and skills by working at a job in the custom closet, deck and home improvement industry. He went on to attend Lakehead University, earning a BA in Political Science.

The friendship continued after graduation, and both Scott and Ryan started their building careers with separate firms, taking on independent jobs on the side. More and more often, one would call the other to help out, until it hit them: their combined skills and personal strengths made an ideal fit. In 2010, they took the leap, and ScottRyan Design Build Inc. was born.

Today, the company has over 200 projects under its belt, and employs a staff of just under 10 people. The partners have purposely maintained the company’s boutique size, enabling them to stay involved in every project. “While one of our experienced team members may lead the day-today management of a project,” explains Ryan, “Scott and I are still involved and available until the project is complete; and all project estimating and macromanagement for every project is handled at the top.

“Everything we do is customized to each client’s individual needs,” he continues. “We also have an extensive network of relationships with other skilled professionals such as architects, designers and engineers, whom we leverage on a project-byproject basis.”

ScottRyan Design Build Inc. takes deep pride in delivering a superior quality final product. The company takes its credentials seriously and stands behind its work: Tarion and HCRA licensed, it holds membership in the BILD association, is fully insured, maintains its safety and training requirements and is part of the WSIB Excellence program.

In 2019, the partners launched an unusual but practical sideline: a complete disposal bin service, not only to service their own job sites, but those of other construction businesses in the Oakville and Burlington area as well. It was, as Ryan says, an idea born out of necessity.

“We found disposal to always be a friction point during the construction process,” he explains. “Getting the bins when you needed them always

seemed to be a bottleneck, and would result in debris building on a job site. Having our own bins and being able to control when and where we have them has helped our site management. It also allows us to offer better value to our clients, by controlling the disposal costs.”

What’s the best part of the job? “One of the most satisfying things in our job is completing a project and hearing how much our clients enjoy their new space,” says Scott. “While we take on projects of various sizes, it’s most fun to be able to take on a new construction or a full gut, because it offers a blank canvas. We love mapping out the possibilities for the new layouts with the team and homeowners, and bringing that vision to life.”

“Scott, myself and our team members have extensive training and experience,” Ryan adds. “We know what it takes to get a job done right, and we don’t compromise on the materials or process to get there.

“When a client is willing to let us try new things or take a project and run with it, that is when our true passion and creativity shines.”

Cozy A NEW YEAR!

MEET THE DESIGNER

I happen to believe winter in Canada is a beautiful time of year. Of course, I know we’ll have some crazy snow days ahead, along with cold, dreary, short days. But the cold weather months are also a great time to fully embrace cozy indoor living. And hey, we always have spring and summer to look forward to!

Here are some ways to brighten up your indoor and outdoor spaces.

Flowers

As soon as the New Year’s celebrations are over, I love to fill my home with springlike blossoms. My favourite flower for instant colour is the oft-overlooked carnation. You can buy these in any grocery store in a multitude of colours. Carnations last for weeks and the colour choices are so pretty. I usually settle on one colour and spread them through my home in small arrangements. I tend to cut them very short in tight bouquets, so they look lush. Roses and ranunculus come a close second and third – and the same rules apply.

Potted bulbs like tulips, hyacinths, and daffodils always make me smile. I generally use them in groupings to watch them grow and bloom. They are generally available right after the holiday season.

I am also drawn to green ivy topiary plants, which can be found in most nurseries, your favourite flower shop or the grocery store. I love their vivid green colour, especially when several are grouped together, and they generally thrive quite well. They look so pretty on a dining table for lunch.

Lastly, those that know me well know that I adore forced branches. The early months of the year are a bit early for foraging, but I have a florist who orders branches for me as early as mid-January. My personal favourites are pink and white cherry blossoms, forsythia and magnolia. They bloom very slowly, and I love the shape of their branches in a vase on a console, as a dramatic centrepiece or on a coffee table.

Indoor Plants

While we are on the subject of living art to brighten cold days, I really value the beauty of potted plants. This is the time of year to give them vitamins, gloss their leaves and try to prune so they are at their healthiest and best.

Cacti have wonderful form and my banana plants grow madly by my sunny windows. I think they are dreaming of being outdoors in the summer!

Garden Pre-Plan

For avid gardeners, what better time than the winter to order seeds from catalogues and start germinating and dreaming about harvesting them during the summer months. Nurseries often have small seedlings, and nothing invigorates me more than walking through semi-deserted greenhouses in February!

Fireplace Focus

Naturally we spend more time indoors this time of year, and there is nothing cozier than sitting by a fire watching the snow fall outside. If you don’t have a fireplace, you can create the feeling with a grouping of candles to brighten up a moody corner. I also like to add some logs to make a chic arrangement by my fireplace. It makes me think of log cabin living, even if my fireplace is actually gas.

I also like to rearrange or style furniture around my fireplace. I will group chairs or ottomans and add small cocktail tables to a fireplace area, to encourage reading or just for enjoying an evening cocktail.

Bedding

Switching your bedlinens to cotton or flannel is a sure way to feel cozy all night long. When my son was a child, he would always ask for his flannel sheets once the weather got colder. I loved buying fun themed sheet sets for him! For me, I settle on ivory or white; it takes me back to my childhood when I make my bed.

Throws

You cannot change seasons without changing your warm weather throws for heavier, more textural ones. I love a good faux fur or alpaca. Both make you want to snuggle under them, and they add an instant winter vibe to any room. Sheepskin is another one of my favourites.

Mudroom

Making a mudroom more functional during the winter is crucial to saving floors from the salt and water we tend to bring inside on our boots. I love metal boot trays; there are many stylish ones on the market.

I also favour washable rugs. With three dogs, I need to be able to wash their feet and not worry about destroying my floors or mats. This isn’t exactly a decor tip, but I also invest in a good paw balm, so my dogs’ footpads stay soft. Adding a tray with lotion, mittens and lip balms by the door is a good way to stay protected and organized.

Game Night

Winter is definitely the time of year where we spend more time indoors than out, and creating a gaming area for nights with family or friends is a fun way to pass a cold evening. If possible, set up a small round table and chairs, maybe by the fire. A small bar cart filled with carafes of hot chocolate, toddies and savoury treats is great to set up on the side.

Invest in an infrared heater or two, and you can extend any covered outdoor living space well into the colder season!

Candles

There was a time that I only used white or ivory candles, but recently I have been drawn to coloured candles. Think black, caramel, taupe and sage green. These "moodier" tones look elegant in any style of candlestick holder.

Artwork

I enjoy refreshing my home after the holidays, and creating a more wintry vignette – or just a change of scene – can be achieved by moving your artwork around. Try leaning darkerframed images or darker-toned subject matter against mirrors in a hallway, to great effect.

Outdoor Living

Consider creating a winterized outdoor space – part of a deck or patio just off the back door, a condo balcony, or a covered porch. If you have access to an electric plug, you can use electric blankets to add warmth. Or invest in an infrared heater or two, and you can extend any covered outdoor living space well into the colder season!

A Dark and Stormy Night:

Colours 2025 of the Year

For 2025, the paint companies’ annual Colour of the Year picks lean to the deep and dramatic, but also evoke an air of nostalgia, comfort and romance.

Cinnamon Slate by Benjamin Moore

When it comes to the annual Colour of the Year picks from each of the major paint companies, 2025 could aptly be named The Year of the Dark and Stormy Night. These are not the blushing pastels of years past. Yet the effect they create on the wall is often swooningly cozy and enveloping; they look the way that

International colour marketing group

Pantone’s annual picks are always noteworthy, since they represent exhaustive research over the past year not only in interior design, but consumer goods, graphic design, packaging and even automobile paints. In early December, the company recently unveiled its 2025 choice: Mocha Mousse, a rich mid-brown. Simultaneously indulgent and classic, it’s neither too exotic nor too bland; it’s just right, the colour equivalent of comfort food. (Perhaps it’s a reflection of uncertainty across the world, and a general shift towards conservatism.)

The paint companies’ picks for 2025 are arguably more evocative – at least in the context of home interiors – than the somewhat plain-Jane brownness of Mocha Mousse. Market leader Benjamin Moore’s 2025 pick, Cinnamon Slate, perfectly embodies the notion of nostalgia and fantasy. A velvety brownishplum, it’s the colour of faded roses, old hand-tinted photographs and antique silks. You can almost hear the Victrola playing in the background.

“I think there’s a real feeling of wanting reassurance in our lives right now,” says BM’s colour marketing specialist, Sharon Grech. “In our homes, that means comforting, familiar colours; we’re longing for balance and substance.”

On walls, Cinnamon Slate has a touchable, velvety look, especially in lower-sheen formulations. But it’s just as

pretty in smaller proportions such as trim, combined with a light near-neutral such as Tissue Pink, also part of the 2025 palette, or Sea Salt, a muddy greige that’s a newer take on warm grey.

BeautiTone’s Midnight Flora, a deep, earthy aubergine, conjures “a garden at night,” in the words of BeautiTone colour expert Kristen Gear. “The general mood of our 2025 palette,” she continues, “has that sense of imagination, dreams, stillness, calm and tranquility.”

One of the more saturated of the choices for 2025, Midnight Flora makes a rich, more nuanced substitute for black – a strong trend last year – especially in rooms that receive a good amount of natural light. Try it in a kitchen as a backdrop to light oak cabinetry, or paired with cream trim. Alternatively, it creates a cozy, escapist mood in a den or library, perfect for curling up with a good book.

Dulux’s Purple Basil has a gentle, neargrey undertone that pairs beautifully with creams or soft greens; if you’re not quite ready for the drama of a Midnight Flora, this shade offers a softer-spoken alternative. As a colour taken from nature (it actually does evoke the colour of purple basil leaves), it’s lovely paired with soft greens or natural textures such as stone, light woods and textiles.

Sico’s Starry Night is a pure chocolate brown, but with a warmth that suggests the touchable softness of mink or velvet.

Rumours by Behr
Midnight Flora by BeautiTone

(Place a colour chip next to Pantone’s Mocha Mousse, and its purple undertones become clear.) Like Purple Basil, this colour works well with organics like stone or wood but has a richness that equally suits metallics and modern furniture.

Behr’s strong oxblood colour, “Rumors,” is arguably the most assertive of the year’s picks. But as interior designer, TV personality and Behr brand ambassador Amanda Aerin points out, it fits squarely in the familiar-comforting-nostalgic trend.

“There’s a nostalgia about this colour,” she says. “It was popular in the ’90s, and we’re seeing it in fashion, home design and even in make-up this year. It’s all about a craving for roots and familiarity.”

Rumors – and to varying degrees, all of the 2025 colours – is particularly effective for one of the year’s biggest trends in home decor: a technique known as “colour drenching.” A colour-drenched room features the same shade on every surface: ceiling, trim, woodwork and walls, varying only in sheen level. The overall effect is like being wrapped in a cocoon of colour – very popular in bedrooms.

Whether deep and dramatic, or soft and tactile, this year’s palette has an artistry that’s perfectly suited to self-expression.

These are complex colours, with an abundance of undertones that’s great as the starting point for a colour scheme. And even if you aren’t quite ready for a full-on treatment like colour drenching, they’re interesting enough that even used more sparingly – as an accent wall, perhaps, or a single painted furniture piece or accessory, is enough to add your own stamp to a room.

“None of these colours are statement colours in the usual sense,” says Benjamin Moore’s Sharon Grech. “It’s all in the way you use them. I think people are ready to use a little more thought, a little more creativity in how everything works together.”

WILD EMBRACE IN THE

OF BRITISH COLUMBIA’S GREAT BEAR RAINFOREST

Maple Leaf Adventures’ expedition catamaran Cascadia takes passengers into the heart of a unique part of the world.

In the pristine and remote Great Bear Rainforest, on British Columbia’s north coast, you can hear the exhalations of humpback whales in the morning and be lulled to sleep by waterfalls tumbling down mountain faces at night.

There are no through roads and no cruise ships in this protected area roughly the size of the Republic of Ireland. Small vessels are the only way to explore the rainforest, islands, mountain-lined fjords and rivers of this area 650 kilometres north of Vancouver.

I visited this remarkable place on the expedition catamaran Cascadia, the newest of the three vessels in the small-ship fleet owned and run by Victoria B.C. ecotourism company Maple Leaf Adventures.

Kevin Smith, company president and co-owner, was our expedition leader. As we began the voyage, he reminded us we were travelling in “a unique, very, very special corner of this one blue planet” – home to First Nations people since time immemorial.

Eighteen passengers from the U.K., Germany, the United States and Canada set out from the small Kitimat marina for our eight-day trip into the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest.

With 12 cabins, lots of windows and deck space seating, plus a salon that was our lounge, dining room and hangout hub, Cascadia is roomy and comfortable. Thanks to twin hulls, it was a smooth voyage.

On-board sous-chef Mara Jernigan nailed it when she called the 138-foot vessel “a little floating boutique hotel.”

We sailed through deep channels bracketed by glaciertopped mountains into estuaries, milky blue bays and close to shallow rivers where spawning salmon fought to survive and create the next generation.

We learned about culture and history from Haisla First Nation guests Louisa Smith and Liz Robinson, who joined us for part of the trip. They helped us connect with their traditional territory, the Kitlope, the last stand of protected and unbroken temperate rainforest on the planet.

I also learned from a remarkable book in the ship’s library written by Smith’s late brother, Xenaksiala elder and author Wa’xaid (Cecil) Paul and British Columbia writer Briony Penn. Stories from the Magic Canoe of Wa'xaid were filled with his teachings and stories.

Wa’xaid, who called the Kitlope “The Cathedral,” often sailed with Maple Leaf Adventures, sharing his knowledge with passengers.

On the first day of our trip, Smith explained that what we would see and do couldn’t be planned. Everything would be dictated by tides, weather and the whims of wildlife. The daily itinerary Smith posted in the salon was known as “Plan A.”

We hoped to see the extremely rare white-coated black bear known as the Spirit Bear or Kermode bear. The official mammal of British Columbia isn’t an albino animal; it’s the result of a genetic mutation, and only lives in the Great Bear Rainforest, where it has significant cultural meaning to the First Nations people here.

What we didn’t see hardly mattered, given the natural wonders we did encounter. On an early morning excursion on Cascadia’s two tenders, we watched a group of elusive sea wolves reunite with spine-tingling howls on a white-sand beach. This rare marine species lives primarily on seafood. Unlike other wolves, it swims to hunt. We were thrilled to watch one paddle for shore from a rocky islet.

For some of us, days began with a sunrise kayak excursion, while others met in Cascadia’s salon over coffee and a pre-breakfast of home-made granola, fruit, and yogurt.

Onboard naturalist Janet Winbourne cautioned us against getting our hopes up. We were a few weeks off the peak of the annual salmon spawn that draws the cream-coloured bears out of the woods to fatten up for winter. She was right.

Cascadia captain Jeff Harvey called it “W Day” when we followed up the morning sea wolf excursion with a trip along the aptly named Whale Channel. The heart-shaped sprays from the humpbacks were so plentiful, we lost count. The animals made slow, graceful arcs out of the water to breathe, their tails rising last. Some humpbacks breached in astonishing displays.

For some of us, days began with a sunrise kayak excursion, while others met in Cascadia’s salon over coffee and a pre-breakfast of home-made granola, fruit, and yogurt. Smith and Capt. Harvey conferred about our day ahead at an

interactive navigational map. (We followed the day’s route on a wall-mounted bigscreen TV.)

The day ended with Cascadia at anchor. We’d meet for a pre-dinner glass of British Columbia wine, beer, or the cocktail of the day on the back deck or in the salon. There were unbreakable glasses for those who wanted their sundowner while soaking in the top-deck hot tub.

Cascadia was built in New Zealand in 2007 and purchased and updated by Maple Leaf in 2019. It joins the company’s converted heritage tug, Swell, and the circa-1904, 92-foot schooner, Maple Leaf. The vessels sail a variety of expedition routes in B.C. and Alaska.

Cascadia is the largest of the three, with a crew of 10. My cabin was comfortable and simply furnished, with First Nations art on the walls and lots of storage. I was a big fan of the heated bathroom floor. Because Maple Leaf believes Wi-Fi takes

passengers away to the world outside the ship, guests are on a weeklong digital detox. It felt strange at first, but within a day or two, I didn’t miss it.

We ate well. There was a hot breakfast such as wild salmon Eggs Benedict, followed by a mid-morning snack, usually eaten on the tenders. Vegetarian guests were also well looked after. Lunches were wraps, burgers, stews, and curries. A savoury treat like locally smoked wild salmon and Vancouver Island cheese was laid out at about 3 p.m. Three-course dinners were accompanied by excellent B.C. wines and included local seafood like halibut and albacore tuna.

Passengers who began the trip as strangers soon became friends. Sharing the experience of being immersed in the fragile beauty of the magnificent Great Bear Rainforest brought us together quickly. It also gave us a common goal: a desire to ensure this wild place remains protected and stays as it is forever.

Adventures

ships sail to the Great Bear Rainforest from April to October. Trips run five to nine days and include all meals, wine and beer. Rates start at $5,750 (CAD).

Air fare is extra. Passengers take a 100-minute flight from Vancouver to Terrace, British Columbia. A 45-minute shuttle transfer to the marina at Kitimat is included.

WELCOMING THE

NEW YEAR

WITH HEALTHY HOSTING

As we welcome the new year, it’s the perfect time to refresh not just our lifestyles but also the way we gather and entertain at home. After the indulgence of the holiday season, hosting can be an opportunity to combine style, enjoyment, and a health-conscious approach. I recommend embracing the concept of Healthy Hosting – where thoughtful tips, delicious recipes, and creative ideas come together to create gatherings that are as mindful as they are memorable.

SUSTAINABLE HOSTING

A STYLISH START

Sustainability sets the tone for mindful entertaining, showing care not only for your guests but also for the planet – something I continue to focus on when hosting any occasion.

Your invitation is your first touchpoint for guests – it sets the tone for your upcoming occasion and is not something to be overlooked. Opt for digital invites to reduce paper waste. Platforms like Paperless Post or Evite allow you to personalize your invitations without leaving an ecological footprint. Bonus: responses can be tracked in real time.

Breathe new life into your home by upcycling existing decor items or sourcing vintage pieces. A well-loved table runner, paired with mismatched heirloom candle holders, creates charm while keeping things sustainable.

Ditch disposables and skip singleuse plastics – use real dishes and glassware to elevate your tablescape. It’s about prioritizing beauty and care over convenience. For larger or more formal occasions, rental dishware is a great way to elevate a look or experience while being mindful of your footprint. Check out SpecialEvents.ca.

FOOD & BEVERAGE

Food and beverage are a key component when hosting any occasion. I love resetting the year by focusing on daytime events, to keep our evening schedules light and restful. Opt for hosting a lunch visit with friends or family, and keep energy levels high by including quality ingredients.

Fresh Vietnamese spring rolls are a favourite in our home; they can be filled with so many great ingredients that display beautifully through the translucent rice paper. These rolls make a great appetizer; or opt to use them as a main course alongside veggie-packed quinoa salad or a spicy soup. Pair with a refreshing zero-proof cocktail, and guests will feel energized and rejuvenated.

FLIP FOR SOME DELICIOUS RECIPES!

BEET & TEMPEH RAINBOW ROLLS

This plant-based recipe celebrates winter root vegetables and rich flavours; it’s perfect for health-focused hosting.

• 2 tbsp tamari (or soy sauce)

MINDFUL HOSTING TIPS

EXPERIENCES THAT NOURISH

Great hosting extends beyond food and drink – it’s about creating moments of joy and connection. If you are hosting a larger group and looking for some activities, consider some of these.

DIY AROMATHERAPY STATION:

Set up a table with small bottles, carrier oils (like jojoba or almond), and a selection of essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, and citrus blends. Guests can create personalized blends to take home – a thoughtful favour they’ll treasure and enjoy.

INTERACTIVE DINING:

Encourage guests to get involved in making a meal together: prepare ingredients only so far and work with

friends and family to bring it to the finish line. There is something humble about working together and enjoying the company.

As we embark on a new year, hosting with health and mindfulness in mind sends a powerful message to those you gather: that they are valued, and that creating a better world starts with small but impactful actions. By blending thoughtful recipes, engaging activities, and sustainable practices, your event can be a celebration that leaves everyone feeling their best – inside and out.

Here’s to gatherings that inspire wellness, connection, and joy!

MOOKING’S ROGER

All about the Trinidadian-born chef, artist and musician’s ongoing adventures in art, sound, and storytelling.

At the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH), a remarkable exhibit bridges the worlds of music, visual art, and storytelling. Entitled Roger Mooking: SoundBites, the exhibit was born out of the fertile mind of this accomplished Trinidadian-Canadian chef, artist, musician and TV host.

Roger Mooking: SoundBites is on display through February 23, 2025 and showcases the multifaceted creative identity that Mooking has cultivated throughout his career. Known to many as a television chef and host of shows like Man Fire Food and Everyday Exotic, Mooking’s latest endeavour sees him transporting his creativity beyond the culinary world. In SoundBites, visitors can engage with his work in ways that go beyond food and fire, drawing instead on music, photography, visual storytelling, and experiential design.

Crafted with multiple entry points, the exhibit allows visitors to experience the exhibition’s “multisensory journey” in their own unique way. Mooking hopes visitors will find an element they’re drawn to first – whether music, visual art, or stories – and use it as a starting point to explore the interconnected layers of the exhibit.

“I wanted people to experience SoundBites through whichever door they enter first,” Mooking says. “Some may gravitate to the music first, then walk out the visual door. Or maybe they walk in through the visual door and exit the story door.”

Each section is laden with what Mooking describes as “Easter eggs,” moments and details woven throughout that encourage repeat visits. He views the whole experience as a form of chaotic harmony, a feeling he wanted to amplify through his art and which he describes as “a manipulation of the concept of time.”

The creation of SoundBites was driven by Mooking’s desire to express the organized chaos he experiences in his own creative process. The songs in SoundBites are short and impactful, each paired with its own

unique image and story. Mooking first developed the music and then felt compelled to create visuals and narratives to accompany each song, thus giving the experience a three-dimensional quality.

For Mooking, the different elements of SoundBites combine to offer what he calls “the purest peek into my mind ever.” The paintings, photos, and written vignettes in the exhibit reveal raw yet refined emotions that are integral to Mooking’s creative process.

“My work here is a little rough around the edges,” he notes, “but thoughtful, bold and colourful, yet also pensive and insular.” This is a side of Mooking that audiences have rarely seen, and he hopes they’ll come away with a better understanding of his approach to creativity.

Mooking’s culinary expertise doesn’t manifest directly in SoundBites, but his attention to detail in crafting

an experience is unmistakable. The only “taste” present in the exhibit is metaphorical, yet Mooking considers his artistic decisions “tasteful” and steeped in his culinary background. “The taste is really only involved through activations we’ve done, like The Goldfish Dinner connected to the exhibit,” he explains. This past event connected culinary arts with SoundBites, allowing guests to engage their tastebuds while exploring the art.

The exhibit also connects back to his Canadian roots, particularly through his work as the first Culinary Ambassador for Grey County in Ontario. His role in the county’s Gather Campaign – part of Ontario’s Rural Economic Development Program – celebrates the region’s culinary heritage and aims to raise awareness of its unique offerings; it’s set to launch in early 2025. “Grey County is magical; it’s filled with farms, artisans, and landscapes that feed both body and spirit,” shares Mooking. It’s clear that being an artist is as much about representing his roots as it is about breaking new ground.

As an artist, Mooking’s passion for storytelling extends beyond visual art. In “Breaking Bread with Roger Mooking,” a live-streamed series

he delves into deeply personal stories, cooking alongside guests who share family recipes that have been passed down for generations. This project lets Mooking connect with people on a personal level.

“We start with their cherished childhood memories, cook together, and by the time we’re eating, we’re like long-lost friends,” he says. For Mooking, this intimacy is what makes food one of the most powerful media for human connection.

Mooking’s capacity for empathy and connection also permeates his visual art. He describes his work as “rough yet polished,” and while his formal culinary training certainly informs his work, his artistic style is grounded in a philosophy of exploration and innovation. “I’m always learning how things are done and then disrupting that way for a unique expression,” he reflects. His work in SoundBites embodies this approach, inviting audiences to experience his creative chaos firsthand.

Known for integrating global flavours into his cuisine, Mooking subtly infuses the exhibit with reflections on

his travels and heritage within SoundBites. His journey has always been defined by curiosity and cultural diversity, which can be seen in the vibrant yet nuanced pieces in the exhibit. For Mooking, expressing his Canadian identity on the global stage is also deeply important.

“As a Canadian citizen, everything one does is an expression of Canadian culture,” he says. “Culture is a living, breathing thing, forever changing because it is the people who make it.” His work, both culinary and artistic, contributes to this ever-

evolving cultural landscape. From Caribbean heritage to Ontario’s agricultural bounty, Mooking’s work feels both deeply personal and culturally significant.

Seeking the fullest version of himself is a lifelong mission, and for Mooking, SoundBites is one chapter in that journey. Whether it’s through food, music, or visual art, Mooking is dedicated to using his platform to encourage others to embrace their creative potential. By presenting his life’s work and insights into his process, he hopes to inspire others to seek out and express their own unique artistic identities. “If you’re not pushing the extremities of your capacity, you’ve stopped evolving,” he advises.

AT THE ART GALLERY OF HAMILTON

Roger Mooking: SoundBites runs at the Art Gallery of Hamilton until February 23, 2025. Visitors can expect an intimate look into Mooking’s mind through an array of paintings, photos, songs, and stories. This is an opportunity to see Roger Mooking as he’s never been seen before: not just as a chef or TV host, but as a multidisciplinary artist challenging the limits of his craft.

For those who can’t get enough of Mooking’s artistry, “Breaking Bread with Roger Mooking” and his work with Grey County’s Gather Campaign will provide additional avenues to explore his creative influence and culinary passion. These projects undoubtedly make Roger Mooking one of Canada’s most dynamic artists, redefining what it means to celebrate food, art, and culture in harmony.

Synergist Lorenzo Guggenheim:

The Oakville Symphony's vibrant young conductor looks forward to the new season.

Photo: Tristan Nugent

Alifelong passion for the study of music has always fuelled Lorenzo Guggenheim’s spirit. But today, his musical and creative talents are blossoming into a number of unique and tangible transformations for his Oakville community. The Oakville Symphony, comprised of a diverse group of disciplined young artists, semiand professional musicians, teachers, and volunteers, are busy rehearsing for the 2024/2025 concert series, filled with exceptional musical experiences.

At the young age of 23, Guggenheim’s unwavering ethic landed him a spot in a master class at the world-renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, where he was chosen to conduct in 2014. Launching his career in front of thousands as part of the Interpretes Argentinos series, he went on to lead the National Symphony Orchestra of Chile.

With over 50 applicants for the position of conductor, Oakville Orchestra members and audiences were immediately enchanted with his fresh energy and welcoming personality, but ultimately it was Lorenzo’s unmistakable connection to both the music and the orchestra members themselves that enabled his rise above the competition when he performed in the 2021/2022 season.

After an extensive musical education overseas and in Canada, his energetic concerts have captured the hearts of audiences around the world, thanks to his innovative musical choices and naturalborn dynamism. For Guggenheim, it all comes down to genuine collaboration and synergistic relationships. “The role of conductor is a curious one and often difficult to explain, but ultimately it’s a communication that goes beyond the

notes. Composers make music for other people who are there to listen, and I’m just the messenger in between. With my transition from student to performer I’m now able to see beyond the technical in favour of a bigger picture.” His primary focus is the message of connection, the translation to his audience, and the magical moments when the music transcends the material, a place of true beauty where human emotions soar.

Guggenheim dedicates much of his time to studying scores and choosing music that he feels will unite the people. Orchestra audiences can often remain in a passive relationship as receivers, so he has stimulated interaction with Q&A sessions after his concerts, where audiences can actively engage in discussions.

He also founded the Campus Philharmonic Orchestra at the University of Toronto, an inclusive space for nonmusic majors to enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra together.

Comprising people of all backgrounds with different levels of commitment,

the orchestra’s musicians of diverse abilities have a place to form meaningful connections. Students, faculty and community members can collaborate, providing an outlet where they can collectively enjoy learning opportunities and pursue their diverse musical pursuits.

Today, Guggenheim works diligently to spearhead positive change, working on youth programs and highlighting progressive programming that features trailblazing women composers. The Oakville Symphony is also affiliated with the Oakville Symphony Youth Orchestra (OSYO), further demonstrating its commitment to nurturing young talent. “We’re an art form that began centuries ago, yet we’re still here for you now in this time and place.” For the current program, he says, “We are opening the space to showcase relevant female composers, presenting the Canadian premiere of Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari and pieces by other living composers.”

Rich in culture and community, the Oakville Symphony is growing and looking to the future, opening its doors to vibrant up and coming talent, and embracing the art of storytelling in iconic and intriguing new ways.

A Holistic Approach TO MENTAL HEALTH

It seems that almost every day, we hear warnings of a looming mental health crisis. Elevated stress levels appear to be commonplace, and many people find themselves unable to relax. But stress itself is not bad – in fact, periodically exposing oneself to stress can actually be quite healthy. It is the uncontrolled and chronic variety that can lead to negative consequences for our health.

The human mind and body have an extraordinary capacity for healing. Unfortunately, we frequently overlook the role that emotion plays in overall health. Consider the following scenario: someone that starts to worry and continues to dwell on negative outcomes will inevitably activate the sympathetic nervous system as well as the body’s physiological stress response. While not harmful per se, uncontrolled or long-term activation of the stress response can lead to negative health consequences.

Experience in clinical hypnosis has repeatedly shown that the safe release of painful or repressed emotions can help clients free themselves from this chronic activation, which clinicians call the Stress Response Cycle, and create the necessary conditions for mental healing.

Hypnotherapy has a wide range of therapeutic applications, and clinicians have been using it successfully for many issues, including anxiety, stress, burnout, grief, phobias, insomnia, trauma, PTSD, complex PTSD, academic performance, weight management, sexual difficulties, smoking, and much more.

While a key benefit of hypnotherapy is the speed at which people begin to notice results, another, lesser known benefit is emotional prophylaxis: the strengthening of one’s ability to cope with stress and emotional trauma. Hypnotherapy can help build up that resilience and safely release accumulated stress, while also reducing the lingering aftereffects of past negative experiences and healing emotional trauma. As a result, it provides a healthy and proactive form of mental and emotional self-care.

While many worry about a potential mental health crisis, one simple solution may be to take a more proactive approach to our own mental health overall. At Innercare, we provide a variety of services, classes and workshops to help people from all walks of life reconnect with their inner self, while building emotional and mental resilience.

By making our minds a priority and taking responsibility for our own well-being, we become less likely to succumb to the stress and anxiety afflicting many people today. Those already struggling may consider seeking out a professional to help guide them back to health.

And with so many options out there, it is worth remembering that clinical hypnotherapy is a proven, effective, non-invasive, drug-free healing alternative that has been used successfully by clinicians for decades. It could also be just the solution we need to eliminate needless suffering – while helping us regain control over our own mental and physical health.

The human mind & body have an extraordinary capacity for healing.

HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP WITH:

Quitting Smoking, Habit Change, Stress, Anxiety, Burnout, Phobias, Emotional Trauma, and so much more.

Better health is not a destination, it is a lifelong journey. We invite you to take your next steps with us.

Glamour A Night of for a Worthy Cause

The #NoGoodWay Campaign and motionball Toronto Gala

This February, Toronto's Liberty Grand will once again be the site of an extraordinary celebration of inclusivity and philanthropy. The highly anticipated 24th annual motionball Toronto Gala, set for Friday, February 7, 2025, promises an unforgettable evening in support of the Special Olympics Canada Foundation.

With over 2,100 guests expected to attend, the Gala brings together professional athletes, media personalities, celebrity Special Olympics athletes, and Toronto’s vibrant young professional community for a night of music, mingling, and making a difference.

Starting at $135 per ticket, the event offers attendees an evening filled with entertainment and inspiration, with a stellar lineup of eight live music acts and DJs, including The 99’s, Alyssa Morrissey, Cella, DJ DXB, and DJ Clymaxx, ensuring non-stop energy across

two grand ballrooms. Beyond the music, guests will enjoy interactive photo activations, an opulent silent auction featuring over 100 luxury items, an open bar offering elevated cocktail experiences, and delectable late-night bites to cap off the festivities.

The 2024 Gala raised an impressive $275,000 net for the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, contributing to motionball’s mission of redefining fundraising for this remarkable cause. Since its inception in 2002, motionball has become synonymous with fun, engagement, and impact, raising over $20 million net to date.

THE IMPACT OF MOTIONBALL

motionball is more than just a gala; it is a movement. This national nonprofit organizes inclusive social and sporting events across Canada, engaging over 10,000 participants annually in 18 cities and more than 26 university campuses. With its innovative approach, motionball is building a sustainable funding model for the Special Olympics movement, while fostering a network of young professionals and university students dedicated to empowering Canadians with intellectual disabilities.

Proceeds from motionball events directly support the Special Olympics Canada Foundation, with 70% of funds raised in each province going to local Special Olympics chapters. These funds are vital for providing grassroots programming to over 50,000 Canadians with intellectual disabilities, covering essentials like team uniforms, tournament costs, travel, equipment, and healthfocused initiatives like the “Healthy Athlete” program.

Additionally, 25% of funds raised are allocated to the Special Olympics Canada Foundation’s national initiatives, including expanding athlete programs and training new volunteer coaches. The remaining 5% is directed to the #NoGoodWay Campaign, an initiative aimed at ending the use of the R-word in everyday language. This campaign encourages Canadians to eliminate harmful terminology and advocate for greater inclusion and respect in their communities.

WHY THE #NOGOODWAY CAMPAIGN MATTERS

Language has power. The #NoGoodWay Campaign challenges the use of the R-word (retard), which has historically been used as a slur, perpetuating a stigma against individuals with intellectual disabilities. By promoting awareness and education, the campaign empowers people to remove this word from their vocabulary and to influence others to do the same.

This initiative reflects motionball’s broader commitment to fostering inclusion and respect for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The campaign’s impact resonates far beyond the Gala, inspiring conversations and actions that create lasting social change.

JOIN THE CELEBRATION

The motionball Toronto Gala is more than a social gathering – it’s a chance to make a tangible difference while enjoying a glamorous night out. Whether you’re there for the music, the networking, or the cause, this event embodies the spirit of community and celebration.

Tickets are limited, so secure yours today at motionball.com and prepare to be part of a night that not only dazzles but also changes lives. Together, we can support the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Canada and champion the values of inclusion, respect, and empowerment.
