EAST to WEST, WEST to EAST – calling Oakville “home”
Over the past 30 years, I have seen the trend in Real Estate of homeowners building high quality homes that make their communities a safe place to invest. In Oakville, this is especially true.

In the 1920s, Oakville was considered just a sleepy little cottage community where Toronto’s elite families like the Eatons and Hindmarshes built their dream homes outside of Toronto proper. His son, Jim, began his career at a young age, selling the high-end carpet remnants from the store and learning every aspect of the business from his dad. When Jim took over the business in 1988, he began to bring in furniture and décor, much to the delight of clients who already trusted Jim to help them choose the perfect carpet. “We’ve really steered the company to a design showroom,” Jim says. Marguerite Harrison joined Jim in 2008, and together, the pair makes a formidable design team. 2014 marks Anderson’s 50th anniversary of being a trusted advisor to their clientele, and with the second and third generation of families finding their way to Anderson’s, there’s no sign of slowing down. Let’s take your traditional cabinet and put it with a modern cocktail table.” Jim calls this look ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue,’ and it’s an eclectic look that allows you to create a room that is neither too dated nor too trendy. Today, many clients appreciate a more minimalist look, with big art or mirrors. Refurbishing, redoing and reupholstering is a trend that Jim currently sees and he is happy to offer this service to you. What’s New for this Year’s [free-them] Freedom Walk? Presented By The Fairmont Royal York
The annual [free-them] Freedom Walk is returning to Toronto for its fifth year, and launching this year is the inaugural [free-them] Freedom Walk in the nation’s capital city, Ottawa. Both walks will take place on Saturday, September 27 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to raise awareness and funds to aid in the abolishment of human trafficking - slavery today. This will be the biggest walk [free-them] has hosted to date. Approximately 1,500 people are expected from across Ontario, Ottawa, Quebec, England and the United States who will be joining [free-them] for the fight against human trafficking, including national and local law enforcement, political figures, notable figures and survivors. “We are extremely excited to host the 5th Annual [free-them] Freedom Walk presented by the Fairmont Royal York Hotel,” says Shae Invidiata, Founder, [free-them]. “This year, our movement has expanded to Ottawa where an inaugural [free-them] walk is uniting survivors, law

enforcement, politicians and who are civilians taking a stand against human trafficking.” The majority of Canadians are not aware that human trafficking – the exploitation of persons - is happening here in our own backyard. Just recently, in Project Dove, the Toronto Police Service made eight arrests laid 44 human trafficking charges and rescued about 10 victims ranging from 14 to 17 years old in July alone.

In the same month, PACT Ottawa (Persons Against the Crime of Trafficking) released a nine-month research report identifying 140 victims trafficked for sex in the 9:00 Ottawa area. The victims REGISTRAT AM ranged from 12 to 25 years old.

Ceremonies will be held at the Royal York Fairmont Hotel in downtown Toronto and the Ottawa Convention Centre in downtown Ottawa, where distinguished speakers will speak against human trafficking before the peaceful 4 kilometre walk throughout each city’s downtown core.
Earlier this year, The Global Slavery Index reported there are currently 29.8 million people who have been forced into human trafficking. Men, women and children are sexually exploited and used through forced labour across Canada, and it is not limited to big cities and urban areas.
One of the speakers at the Toronto ceremony will be John Cotton Richmond, a federal human trafficking prosecutor who has worked on the front lines combatting human trafficking for over 12 years earning him numerous honors.
“Eighty percent of those enslaved in human trafficking are women and children, and the average age a child is forced into sexual slavery in Canada is just 13,” adds Invidiata. “Together we can raise funds to help prevent and rehabilitate victims of human trafficking.”
Detective Carolyn Botting and Kelly Lyle will be speaking at the Ottawa ceremony. Both women have working in law enforcement for over 12 years, and have worked with victims of human trafficking since 2006. They supervised the first prosecution of a woman accused of human trafficking, as well as worked as lead investigators for Canada’s first teenage trafficking ring.

This year has marked a changing time for human trafficking in Canada. The Supreme Court of Canada struck down previous Canadian prostitution laws in late December last year, giving Parliament one year to respond to the Supreme Court’s decision. Since January, the Harper Government has given ample attention to prostitution and human trafficking, collecting national surveys and meeting with stakeholders across the country to gather information to form an appropriate response to the Supreme Court. In June, Minister of Justice, Peter MacKay tabled Bill C-36 the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. The Bill focuses on the risks of violence, exploitation and social harm inherent in prostitution caused by objectifying the human body and commodification of sexual activity. It outlines the importance of protecting human dignity and discouraging prostitution by denouncing and prohibiting the INVIDIATA THE COLLECTION

purchase of sexual services; finding persons for the purpose of prostitution; economic interest in exploiting prostitution of others; and commercialization and institutionalization of prostitution. The Bill notes the Parliament of Canada’s commitment to protect communities from the harms associated with prostitution, and wishes to encourage those engaging in prostitution to report incidents of violence and leave prostitution. Bill C-36 also mentions that prostitution has a disproportionate impact on women and children, and denouncing and prohibiting purchase of sexual services will create less demand for prostitution. “If passed, Bill C-36 will change the course of Canadian history,” comments Invidiata. “For the first time, the government is recognizing that prostitution is not inevitable and there is a need to offer options to get victims out of a dangerous line of work.” “In terms of funding, $20 million is just the start of what needs to be seen at a federal level to create the necessary strategies to help women and children leave the sex trade industry”, says Invidiata. “There hasn’t been a more crucial time to come together and take a stand for freedom and justice. Together, we can make strides to abolish human trafficking.” Funds raised from both [free-them] Freedom Walks will go towards [free-them]’s front line victim service organizations that are rescuing and rehabilitating victims of human trafficking in Canada.

Moving forward, Ontario economic expansion is set to match the rate of growth in Canada over the 2014 - 2015 forecast horizon. Overall, the province’s economy is forecast to grow by 2.2% in 2014 and 2.5% in 2015. Meanwhile, business investment is poised to grow as corporate profits and business sentiment continue to grow. Growth in Ontario business investment hinges largely on the state of the global economy. An improving global economy by 2015, led by growth in the U.S., combined with a low Canadian dollar, will support Ontario’s export performance. An improving economy will boost Ontario employment growth from 0.9% in 2014 to 1.8% by 2015. Ontario economic sectors better positioned to support growing U.S. business and consumer spending, such as information technology, machinery manufacturing, automotive and building material industries, should register stronger employment gains. With respect to demographics, migratory outflows from Ontario will lessen as a rebalancing of economic growth takes hold across the country in the years ahead. In fact, Ontario’s net loss of interprovincial migrants was at one of its lowest levels over the past decade during the fourth quarter of 2013. Net migration to Ontario will rise from 82,500 to 93,900 by 2015. With growth in net international migration expected to double from 5.0% in 2014 to 10.0% in 2015, this will have a positive impact on the demand for housing.

The concept to store cars came about one day while contractors were onsite renovating the bathrooms, and saw Sean and Anissa’s Seadoos, a 1997 Dodge Avenger ES, and a tow-behind trailer in a corner – he then asked if he could store his Corvette alongside their vehicles. That idea led to a small add on Kijiji offering storage, and within weeks that small space was filled with a variety of vehicles ranging from luxury cars, to small boats, and even a food catering truck.
Once the demand outgrew the space and customers had to be turned away, Sean & Anissa came to the realization that there was a need for individuals to store their toys just as much as they had – earlier on, they simply had a small single car garage that was mainly being used as storage for one of the Seadoos, which had to be crammed in the corner, with no room for the other, nor for the pending purchase of a tow-behind trailer for family camping vacations - ‘Our storage problems were no different than our customers’.

Today, the business has grown based on that simple philosophy. Parking, safety and security of a boat, luxury/exotic car or RV is increasingly becoming a challenge in the GTA. a personal response often in minutes during regular business hours or next day if in the evening or on weekends. Clients can schedule a pick up or drop off of their vehicle in one of our heated, enclosed and unmarked trailers to any location they desire: home,office, dealership, restaurant, or airport. There are some things to keep in mind when you are leaving your car in storage for a considerable amount of time. ECCS gives an important checklist of what to do to the car to insure that it meets all the necessary requirements for the parking facility. 1
Get an oil and filter change prior to parking the car. “It’s important to put fresh oil and a new filter in the car. Otherwise contaminants in the old oil will have a field day corroding the insides of your engine,” explains Hugh.
2 Make sure to gas up. The tank should be filled to the brim, Hugh suggests also adding a gasoline stabilizer called STABIL. “Put this in before fueling up and run the engine to make sure that it fills the system with the stabilized gas.” 3 The tires should be over-inflated to about 40-50 psi (pressure per square inch). This will help avoid any issues, as there is a natural pressure loss per month. Wash the car the day before dropping it off, as it is not recommended for cars to be put away wet, “unless you want to encourage rust to form everywhere the water collects,” says Hugh. 4 Next is cleaning the wheels. “Brake dust is very corrosive and you do not want that sitting on your wheels all winter,” explains Hugh. The car’s insurance can be adjusted while in storage too. “Most people cancel their liability and collision while the car is not in use, and just carry fire, theft and vandalism coverage,” he says.

PELLER ESTATES – WHERE HISTORY AND HOSPITALITY REIGN SUPREME First on our list of destinations was Peller Estates Winery, located at 290 John Street East, RR #1 Niagara-on-the-Lake. The winery recently celebrated their milestone 50th anniversary. Famous for their world-class wines from Winemaker Katie Dickieson, Pellar’s restaurant, which has the highest Zagat rating of ‘Extraordinary’, is run by Executive Chef and CityLine TV personality Jason Parsons. When we arrived at the main building that houses the wine shop, we saw guests enjoying an afternoon of wine tasting around a large centre bar while others were browsing through the shop’s many gift and speciality food items. Our tour guide, Juan, took us directly to the vineyard. Juan’s knowledge of the topography (vines are planted on slopes to allow for optimal drainage), the age of the vines (ranging

anywhere from 20-35 years old) and other cool facts about the vines’ ancestry (many were brought here from Europe) was impressive, as was his hospitality. As he explained the harvest cycles and production process behind Peller’s award- winning wines, we could hear guests enjoying lunch on the Restaurant’s beautiful stone patio overlooking the grounds. After enjoying the view outside, we went downstairs to the Estate’s barrel cellar. Beside the cellar is a tasting room where Peller hosts a number of wine tasting and food pairing events throughout the year for small to large sized groups. One event caught our eye in particular – Chicks & Chocolate – Pairing Wine & Chocolate, where guests learn how wine and chocolate complement each other. Yum! From there we went to the private tasting room where we sampled the 2011 and 2012 Cabernet Franc. Both were delightful.

Peller has won many prestigious awards for their Icewines, Chardonnays and Rieslings and they have also earned international acclaim, being named Best Canadian Winery of the Year at London’s International Wine & Spirit Competition. Most recently, Peller was named the 2014 Canadian Winery of the Year by the WineAlign National Wine Awards of Canada held in B.C. MEGALOMANIAC (JOHN HOWARD CELLARS OF DISTINCTION) - CHEEKY YET “OH SO AMAZING” The second stop on our tour was Megalomaniac where our timing could not have been better. Greeting us was none other than John Howard himself, the owner of this relatively “new” wine brand. It’s not often that you get to meet a megalomaniac in person, not to mention one as nice as Howard, but before we tell you about the man behind the brand, we first need to tell you about the thrilling ride to the winery itself. Located at 3930 Cherry Avenue, Megalomanic can be found at the top of a long, winding gravel road passing through rows and rows of grapevines. At the top of the hill sits the main

building. Modern in design, the ceiling is lined with gigantic crystal chandeliers hand-picked by Howard, creating a classic yet contemporary effect. The building houses a wine tasting bar, a glass enclosed wine tasting lounge, underground cellar, and office space. The Cellars of Megalomaniac sit on a 96-acre site of the Vineland upper bench at what many argue is the highest vantage point on the Niagara Escarpment. We were fortunate to be granted access to the building’s rooftop terrace, still under construction, to take in the spectacular view. Despite the hazy air, we could definitely see the Toronto skyline. The views from the terrace and the incredibly vast amount of land that surround the main building are what make this winery so distinctive. “When guests arrive, especially those from the U.S. or Europe, the two things they point out the most are the fact that the views are amazing and that they just can’t believe the amount of land our winery sits on – 100 acres of vineyard is unheard of outside of our region,” explained Howard. The underground cellar houses the barrel-aging facility that produces their Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot single varietals. The Sous Terre Cabernet Merlot Reserve 2007 took honours as the top limited edition red at Cuvée 2011.

To say the name Megalomaniac is cheeky is an understatement. “I originally wanted to christen these wines in my name, John Howard, and then my good friends accused me of being yet another “Bleeping” megalomaniac. Regrettably the name stuck,” laughed Howard. After sampling some red wine in the glass lounge, Howard, whose plane to France was, fortunately for us, delayed, invited us to the adjacent Home Vineyard where he shared some great stories about the industry. Howard is a warm and personable man, and he generously shared his time and thoughts about wine – most notably that wine is meant to be shared with friends. In addition to Megalomaniac, Howard Cellars holds a 35% shareholding in two Grand Cru Chateaux’s in the St. Emilion appellation of Bordeaux France which operates 12 estates in Bordeaux from Grand Cru Classe to Bordeaux, including the coveted Chateau La Confession. “Sue-Ann Staff is the consulting Winemaker for all varietals and acts as liaison to our two sister properties in Bordeaux,” Howard explained. Among Howard’s red and white blends and varietals is Homegrown, Vineyard 4379 (named after the latitude, 43, and longitude, 79, of the vineyard where the grapes are grown) beginning with the 2006 vintage. Its initial release took off from the get-go, making it the fastest-growing VQA wine in Canada.

A savvy businessman and wine industry veteran – Howard is the former owner of Vineland Estates – this Canadian icon is also a champion of kids, supporting Kids Health Links, a philanthropic organization that donates computers and technology aids for children in 11 children’s hospitals. VINELAND ESTATES – AN ODE TO THE SENSES Our last stop of the day was for a tour, wine tasting and dinner at Vineland Estates. As we approached Vineland we took in the carefully restored historic buildings – the stone tower that stands proudly over the former Mennonite homestead with structures that date back to the 1840s. These include the former farmhouse, the century barn that houses the retail store and wine tasting bar, and the Carriage House. Our guide, David Hulley, Vineland’s Director of Customer Experience, started our tour in the underground barrel cellar, a pseudo library of sorts that showcases Vineland’s 30-year history. The cellar houses vintages that date back to the 1980s.

The next stop on our tour was to see the Estate’s new sensory garden, a project Vineland undertook with the help of Sheridan Nurseries, where perennials and annual herbs have been planted in nine beds by wine varietal: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Icewine (Vidal), Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chardonnay and Chardonnay Musque. The centre round bed is Pinot Meunier. After taking in the amazing aroma from the lemon thyme and other herbs in the garden, we made our way to the restaurant patio overlooking the vineyard for dinner. In the distance we could see the vineyards, the forests of the Niagara Escarpment and Lake Ontario. We could even see as far as Toronto from our vantage point. The cuisine was exquisite as we enjoyed tasting Vineland’s Expressions in D Riesling.

Nestled on the northern edge of the property sits Field D. Led by Winemaker Brian Schmidt, the Rieslings that come from this parcel of land show stark differences which Hulley attributes to the change in topsoil as you move from east to west. Divided by east, centre and west plantings, four different Rieslings come from three parcels (the fourth one is a combination of the three). The base of the terrier is limestone/clay but the 15 inches of topsoil differs in the field as you travel west to east. On the western slope, gravel defines the top layer of soil, with the centre consisting of sandy soil and the eastern portion defined by loam. This wine series is named Alto, Soprano and Falsetto with the blend called Concerto. After sampling all four Rieslings, we were hard pressed to choose a clear winner, opting instead to sample a bottle of Cabernet Franc instead. Vineland Estates Winery produces premium Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, signature Red Meritage, and other varietals including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc and their premium icewines. “Even though we have been a leader in the cutting edge growth of the premium wine industry for over 30 years, we have no intention of easing up,” Hulley explained. “From our ground breaking, other-winery inclusive wine club, to our much loved home delivery to our globally recognized restaurant led by Executive Chef Justin Downes, we continue to push the boundaries of hospitality and fine wine and food production.
