I
t is always hard to say goodbye to the warm weather that comes with summer, but we are definitely looking forward to the beautiful colours that go hand in hand with fall. The past few months have been very exciting for both myself and the entire Invidiata Team.
The market is always very fast paced in the summer. The sunshine tends to bring prospective buyers out to more and more open houses in the area. We had a great season helping our new and loyal clients find their dream homes just in time to settle down for the fall. As always, we are looking forward to the next chapter in the Invidiata story. Lower interest rates are keeping the Greater Toronto Area’s market very strong and healthy right now. In July of this year the market saw over 9,000 homes in the GTA sell, which is an eight per cent increase over last year. We can only hope this momentum carries well into the fall and winter market. I
n 1941, Bud Corbett, a sports aficionado and dedicated coach in the Oakville community, didn’t start his business by opening the doors to his store, as most of these stories begin; rather, he opened the trunk of his car. Out of the parking lot, Bud Corbett started his 75-year legacy selling sporting goods and wove a name and brand into the Oakville community that we’ve all grown to know and love— Corbetts Sports store. But with a knack for selling and understanding what athletes want, it wasn’t long before Bud, moved his racket from his Ford to brick and mortar. He opened a one-stop shop for sporting goods, offering everything from hockey and baseball, to football and golf, to hunting and fishing. With Bud’s passion for sports, the store grew in notoriety and inventory and became Oakville’s go-to sporting goods store. Well into their success, in

1967 Bud passed the torch into good hands and sold the business to longtime employee, Ken Brown. It was Ken who had the vision of introducing skiing and winter sports to the fold—a move that would forever cement the store’s legacy in the community and surrounding area, which still holds today, as Corbetts is widely regarded as Southern Ontario’s perennial source for skiing and snowboarding. “It seems to me that Corbetts has become an institution in the ski and snowboard industry because of their passion for the sports and their strong focus on building relationships. They have done a great job at focusing on relationships with their customers, creating a shopping environment that has friendly, knowledgeable staff and offers a great selection of brands for the ski and snowboard families. Strong partnerships and respect between the suppliers and Corbetts has also proved to be a key to their success. Bottom line Kim, Chris
and the Corbetts gang are a lot of fun to work with. In fact, all three of my kids worked at Corbetts and loved it!” explains Kit Cameron, a sales rep for SunIce which is a brand offered at Corbetts.
The Ski & Snowboard Era
Ken’s decision to specialize in skiing and winter sports really shifted the store’s focus and changed the business for good. Brown’s son-in-law, and Corbetts current owner, Chris Tymstra explains, “It’s what’s started the little empire we have here now. We streamlined the inventory, focused on the skiing and snowboarding market, and it increased business tenfold.” When Ken decided it was time to retire, Chris took over the store in 1996, along with his wife (Ken’s daughter), Kim. Tymstra stuck to the winning formula of exclusively INVIDIATA THE COLLECTION
selling within the skiing and snowboarding industries, and over the next 20 years, he continued to solidify Corbetts brand into Oakville’s history, by employing hundreds of local employees and selling over 100,000 skis and snowboards.
Corbetts is a Family Affair
A big reason why Corbetts has stood the test of time is because it’s rooted in family. Since its inception back in 1941, Corbetts has always fostered a family-first approach. “Ken was like a son to Bud,” says Tymstra, “and I was a son to Ken. We don’t base the core of the business around metrics and revenue. We base it around family and good people.” In fact, after 20 great years, Chris has witnessed many of his staff fall in love and get married. He’s had the pleasure of seeing a dozen or so relationships FALL 2015

With so many strong relationships, finding new staff, whether it’s permanent or seasonal, has never been a challenge for Corbetts. And there’s never a shortage of young people— the lifeblood of the industry—past employees are always ushering their offspring into the fold. Corbetts is also reputed for their work hard/play hard mentality— they not only focus on the business, but they create a family atmosphere where they include everyone who’s a part of the team in their success and legendary events they hold year round. They’re the rare type of company that inspires people to walk the extra mile for them.
The Future
As the online world continues to bring in a new era of how people shop and engage with local businesses, Corbetts has made it a point to stay ahead of the curve and are very in tune with leveraging technology to engage their customers. They’ve built a solid online presence and reputation, using warehouse management software, e-commerce tools, social media marketing, and a fully-responsive mobile website. On top of this, Corbetts was the first shop in Ontario, and is still one of the few to use the Speed-tronic FALL 2015
binding certification program—a benchmarking system that ensures all the skis they work on are tracked online and are routed through a certification process that assures they have been properly installed and set up.
Continuing the Legacy
Tymstra has no plans of slowing down and plans on keeping the Oakville landmark in the community for years to come. “I envision Corbetts being around for another 75 years,” says Tymstra. “We’ve got the right technology and marketing strategies in place to stay relevant with the younger generation, and I’m looking forward to passing on the business to my children when the time comes.” If that doesn’t make you smile, this surely will. Recognizing the community’s involvement in their continued success, Corbetts has been a part of a program that’s focused on giving back. For the last three seasons, the store has donated a portion of its sales—$100,000 in total—to the Oakville Hospital Foundation, and plan on delivering again in 2016.

CONSUMER CONFIDENCE CONTINUES TO GROW AND STRENGTHEN WITHIN THE GTA
C
anada has seen one of its best summer seasons in the real estate market this year. In July alone, the GTA saw over 9,000 homes sell, which is an eight per cent increase from the same month in 2014. Condo sales in particular soared to the top of the charts seeing an overall increase in sales of over 14 per cent. The number of sales isn’t the only statistic going up in 2015. The average sale of a home in the GTA for the month of July was $609,236, which is the highest average on record. This is a 10 per cent increase from 2014. This gives fuel to my prediction that Oakville homes will hit the million-dollar average by year’s end. The main factor contributing to this overall increase is consumer confidence. The Ontario Real Estate Association recently conducted a study and found that 66 per cent of GTA residents describe their current residential real estate market as “favourable.” Cities in the 905 area code, including Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga, were the most

satisfied with their city’s current market according to the research. The GTA isn’t the only city in Canada experiencing major successes in the market; Vancouver is also having an excellent year so far. Sales for July are up 30 per cent from 2014, and the average price of a detached home within the city is at $1,141,800, which is 13 per cent higher than last year.
I PREDICT WE WILL SEE CONTINUED, STEADY GROWTH IN THE MARKET FOR THE REMAINDER OF 2015 AND WELL INTO 2016. Another contributing factor to the increase we’ve seen in these numbers is the recent plunge in the Chinese stock market. China saw its market drop eight per cent on August 24th, which has lead to serious insecurity in Chinese investors. They have now turned to real estate which still remains a safe investment for them, especially with the Canadian dollar being depreciated at the moment.

In fact, the same research done by the Ontario Real Estate Association found that 46 per cent of GTA residents predict next year will be an even stronger year for the real estate market.

In 2014, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services chose ROCK to be the lead agency for the child and youth mental health sector in the Region of Halton.
