UP COFFEE ENTREPRENEUR NEIL MADDEN TAKES HIS LOVE OF COFFEE TO THE NEXT LEVEL WITH ECS COFFEE & KITCHEN. By Rebecca Flatt

NEIL MADDEN STARTED A VENDING MACHINE BUSINESS IN 1997, OPERATING OUT OF THE GARAGE IN HIS BURLINGTON HOME. TODAY ECS COFFEE & KITCHEN NOW HAS FOUR LOCATIONS, “HOME” TO HOME BEVERAGE PRODUCTS THAT HAVE GROWN MEN AND WOMEN FEELING LIKE THEY’RE A KID IN A CANDY STORE.

ECS Is Still The Go-To Place For People Wanting Variety With Their Morning Cup Of Coffee. Since launching the flagship store in Burlington, ECS is still the go-to place for people wanting variety with their morning cup of coffee. The store sells between 600-700 different types of mix-and-match coffee. Madden recognizes that in today’s retail market a lot of innovation must take place. “We’ve started by becoming a little more broad in our focus,” he explains. “We recognize that we were very innovative in the coffee retail space but we saw and continue to see a hole in the market for premium products.” Therefore, in came sought-after items such as the Vitamix. “They’re not luxury items but they appeal to people who want better quality and a better experience than what they have at home and what’s (currently) in their kitchen,” he says. Coffee aside, more than half of the products are made in North America or Europe.

His Goal Is To Create An Experience For His Customers. Second to offering products people like – in addition to offering a complimentary cup of coffee in the store – is giving customers a compelling reason to shop. “As a company we’re changing our model in order to create those compelling reasons,” says Madden. His goal is to create an experience for his customers. At any time there could be sandwich demonstrations fresh off the Panini press or smoothies straight from the Vitamix. A monthly lineup of free classes showcasing everything from soda making for kids and licensed VIP events to kitchen hacks and proper knife skills which provides entertainment to the public while getting educated on how to use products more efficiently. “Most people can get information online about pretty much anything. We would like to be in a position where we get people into the store. We want them to come in and actually see how the products work.” There’s a social aspect too. “There aren’t a lot of places you can go to (during the week) and learn something new that you’ll use on a daily basis,” states Madden. He wants people to continue to recognize that ECS is the place to go for learning about new techniques and new products to make their life and their time spent in the kitchen even better.

“We have big plans for the future. There’s no better place to be than in Burlington.” In order to maintain a high level of premium products in his store, Madden won’t just pick up the phone to inquire about a product. If it’s not something he’s found at a tradeshow he’ll make a point of making a visit. “If we find a product (we like)
