2015 HUD Design Competition S c h e m a t i c D e s i g n - I n n o v a t i v e H o u s i n g - Te a m C o m p e t i t i o n site - Houma, LA. project type - Senior Living Facility

This year’s innovative housing design competition, presented by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), invited graduate students from all over the country to compete to find a new way to think about senior living. Teams comprised of architecture, landscape architecture, public policy, development, and real estate development were asked to come together to find a unique way to look at this problem that is happening all over the county. The competion was set in Houma, Louisiana on a site with a current senior living facility already built on it. We decided that demolishing the old building was more beneficial to the project and instead erected 6 buildings that all are programed differently give the residents daily choices. Each building would have a unique comprehensive design that would also help seniors with memory retention. Ground floors would be primarily retail and commercial spaces that would help to offset the costs of construction and upkeep and then the living spaces would take up the floors above. Our team submitted a project that focused on integrating aging in place strategies along with creating multiple opportunities for social engagement and a real sense of community with the residents. This competition is still on going as we’re waiting for the results for the first phase.

McKenzie Brooks Farmhouse Sustainable - BioSIP Panels - Ver nacular site - Boulder, CO. date - Spring 2013 instructor - Julee Herdt

“A home that utilizes sustainable design, revitalizes waste fibers for architectural and aesthetic uses, and grabs influence from vernacular farmhouse features while remaining modern in design. This small residence was designed for a farming family in northeast Boulder who needed something smaller than their current home. This property is not only their home, but their life. Farming has been a part of their lives for decades and this new home aims to keep that history. The gable barn roof is an iconic structure and has been part of the vernacular farmhouse for ages. This new design makes use of sustainable design features including BioSIP panels and recycled lumber, both from Colorado, as well as other systems throughout. The result was an 1,829 sq. ft. house located just inside their property that brought in many contemporary influences while remaining reminiscent of the farm life they’ve always lived.

Located on one of the many fields on this 80-acre plot of land, this new home is situated just west of the family’s current house. Sitting just off the main road leading into their property this proposed home finds influence in traditional barn design as well as modern sustainable practices. The walls use a new technology named BioSIP panels developed by Professor Julee Herdt. These panels are similar to SIP panels however, they are made from recycled fibers that are used to make the two boards that then sandwich a layer of high density foam. These panels are not only very strong but have higher R-values than traditional insulated walls and SIP panels. This project used Beetle Kill lumber that would be pulverized and press together to create very strong boards. Beetle Kill is a problem Colorado and many states in the western part of North America have been facing for years. Due to warmer winter weather, certain types of pine trees aren’t able to defend themselves against the Mountain Pine Beetle. Usually, these beetles play a vital role in the forest by killing old and rotting trees which helps healthier trees receive more nutrients and space to grow. Now however, there is an outbreak of beetles causing more forest to die than need be. This causes potential fire hazards with dead brush and may also have a consequence on global warming trends. This product is readily available and local. The architectural proposal is to utilize the wasted pine trees from Colorado as feedstock for the design: pulp for BioSIPS and planks for siding and flooring.

Sustainable Design This family wanted a home that was not only beautiful, but also sustainable in design. This home uses a number of systems that work together to bring down heating, cooling, and electric costs but do not interfere with their way of life. The one piece of equipment the family specifically asked for was an outdoor, wood burning furnace. Because of the dead brush surrounding their property, they needed a way to use that potential energy as well as get rid of it. The wood burning furnace uses this brush for fire that heats up water that is used throughout the home. The water heater is powered by solar electricity and helps to pump the heated water throughout the Warmboard radiant flooring system that helps to heat the house to a comfortable temperature in the cold months. Inside the home is also a masonry heater that heats up the space as well by burning wood. The inside is designed in a way to trap that heat and the stone that it is made out of stores it and radiates it in the home. When it is warm outside, the skylights can be opened to create a draft that circulates air through the house. This design is based off Dog Trot homes that are a type of vernacular architecture in the south, where it is very warm most of the year. All of the materials are local and, while they create something that looks beautiful, also helps to cut down on the gasoline needed to transport them. Local materials was important to this family with their background in the farming industry.

BMOCA Building Addition Historic - Education - Contemporar y site - Boulder, CO. date - Fall 2012 instructor - Marcel de Lange partner - Zane Levin

For hundreds of years people have been using art as a means of spreading ideas. From Ancient Greece to present times, art has followed history and has been an unrivaled way of expression. There is no doubt that different eras have changed how we not only view the world, but how we view art. This has brought about new ways of thinking about different mediums and how they relate to our notion of art. The Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art celebrates these new thoughts and the artistic expression that comes with them. This addition to the BMOCA aims to only strengthen the role contemporary art plays in the community. Education will be the primary medium through which this role is spread. With a variety of art classes and guest lectures and presentations, the BMOCA will become an artistic hub for the Boulder community.

The design and shape of the building changed multiple times throughout the design process. Above are some of the preliminary sketches as we started to analyze the site and its context within Boulder’s downtown area. Our intent was to create an addition that was contemporary and functional in design. From the outside, you can notice the extreme change from the old building and the addition while inside the museum blends as one to create a unique combination of education, community, and art.

Main Hallway & Auditorium Renderings Because the existing building was historic and an icon in the community, we wanted to make as little cuts through this wall as we could. We decided to keep most of the wall the same as it has been and only make openings where it was necessary to connect the buildings. This main hallway is not only a way to showcase this existing wall, but also acts as the main circulation corridor for the building. The auditorium is one of the first things you see walking into the building. Here, educational classes and lectures could take place easily without having to move far through the building and can be showcased to guests not planning on attending. Also, during the Farmer’s Market on the weekends, this space can be open to the public while the galleries could still be controlled for paying customers only.

Professional Work Design - Project Management - Experience position - Assistant Project Manager company - Cline Design Group, Inc. location - Littleton, CO.

Cline Design Group is a small design-build firm out of Littleton, Colorado. We primarily designed high end custom homes for our clients and worked with them every step of the design process. Cline Design Group also worked with a developer to design contemporary homes around Metro Denver. Fortunately, I was able to move around a great deal in the company and experience various positions working on both the architectural and construction sides. My responsibilities included design work, drafting construction documents, and attending client meetings as well as general project management duties such as keeping in contact with subcontractors, upkeep on job sites, and working with the city to move projects along.

Digital Design Work Or iginal - Multiple Programs - Passion Since I began using Microsoft Paint on my first computer, my interest in digital design has only grown. Coming from an artistic background, this new medium was a different and exciting challenge. In high school I found a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS and started to sculpt my craft. I began using these and my HTML skills to help friends design their MySpace pages as a way to express my passion for design. This design interest was mainly a hobby of mine but has become a profession that I strive to get into. I’ve designed BMX number plates for a local BMX track in Ft. Collins and designed multiple company logos as well as designed my own brand, THINK Designs. My most recent project has been ragecolorado.net. Rage Colorado is a website a friend of mine and I started to promote the Colorado music scene, another great passion of mine. I’ve created logos, websites, business cards, and stickers for this site and plan on create more in the future. Digital design grew from a hobby into becoming my life.

RageColorado.net “The Catalogue of Colorado Nightlife” We noticed that Colorado had one of the best mesic scene in the country but large ticket sites didn’t supply the small local venues that provide some of the hottest events and concerts in the area. There was no ‘one-stop’ website that people could go to find concerts going on in Colorado for all of our major venues. Out of this need, Rage Colorado was born. Rage Colorado acts as an up-to-date concert calendar and a place to buy tickets, and stay up to date on news in our amazing music scene. Our mission is to provide viewers with the necessary information they need to RAGE. Colorado’s music scene is a second passion of mine and the goal of this website was to simply, promote it! On this website I acted as the webmaster, as well as the graphic designer for logos, backgrounds, banners, etc. With my knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, HTML, CSS, and now PHP I was able to manipulate this WordPress theme into a website that we were truly proud of for something I’m passionate about.

- Provides up-to-date concert and event listings for Colorado’s major venues. - Direct links to buy tickets to the hottest concerts. - Link to Bus To Show shuttle ser vice for safe rides to and from concerts and event.

- Articles on newly announced concerts and events as well as updates on major upcoming shows. - Featured Artist of the Month articles to help promote local talent.

- Concert and event reviews including photographs. - Large social media presence to connect to our viewers better. - Frequent ticket giveaway opportunities.

THINK Designs THINK Designs came from a fascination with graffiti art, typography, and a growing interest in graphic design. The name THINK came about through the exploration of typography designs that were intricate and made you really look into them to find the word, THINK. These designs originated from doodles and turned into digital work and are where I began to build my graphic design and computer skills. In this experimental project I’ve created computer backgrounds, logos, social media banners, as well as had a t-shirt design made. This project was my first experience with many digital design programs and was a way to build my skills. Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator were the programs that I used to create these designs, but developed them mostly on paper, with pens and pencils.
