Hello
My name is Patrick and design is my game. I am an architectural intern on the path towards licensure with an interest in creating sustainable environments that encourage the success and well being of those that use them. My goal is to work creatively in a collaborative company that is dedicated to enhancing the world through design. Through my professional, academic, and freelance experience I’ve become proficient with industry standard software including the Adobe Creative Suite, ArchiCAD, Revit, AutoCAD, and SketchUp. I am a snowboarder, bicycle rider, and a bit of a music junky. I’ve traveled the country competing in the national BMX circuit and helped to create and manage a music promotion website. My obsessions have lead me to some amazing places and give me the inspiration to keep pushing for more. I strive to utilize all of these life experiences and knowledge in a company where I can follow my one true passion – design.

residents can enjoy outdoor dining, walking trails, and gardening areas. Inside, residents can enjoy an assortment of inviting spaces including multiple dining venues, a fitness center, and various areas for group activities. As the project lead for the design team, I’ve helped to develop this project from its initial concepts through to construction documentation. I also engaged with the clients and project engineers to ensure the project was on time and on budget.

2.2 Manazel Medical City Site: Abu Dhabi, UAE Size: 132,788 square meters Project Type: Comprehensive Medical Center Firm: SmithGroupJJR
The Manazel Medical City is a comprehensive medical center with five distinct units: acute-care hospital, medical office building, cancer center, rehabilitation hospital, and children’s learning and disability center. All of the units were integrated into a six level building running north and south with three “fingers” projecting from the west side. As part of the design team, I was responsible for a number of different duties. I worked along side architects, interior architects, and medical planners

to ensure the project developed in a timely manner. I helped to organize and manage an initial interior design charrette for the project team, designed interior and exterior portions of the building’s 3D model with project architects, as well as developed a website to illustrate the SmithGroupJJR design process. While working on these tasks I was also involved with multiple other projects balancing deliverables and deadlines. I was a valuable member of the healthcare studio, helping where I was needed.

Manazel Medical City
The interior design charrette was a chance for architects, interior designers, and planners to get together to develop concepts for the direction of the interior of the Manazel Medical City. Along with one of the lead interior designers on the project, I coordinated drawings to use as base images for the charrette. I participated in designing three different concepts over the day long meeting. After initial sketches and comments were recorded, I was part of a team that translated them into rough 3D SketchUp models to start understanding their impact on the layout of the building. We were mainly concerned with designing the entrance lobby, as it spanned the entire length of the medical complex, as well as the cancer department entrance. These concepts were refined over the course of a couple weeks and then presented to the client at a meeting in Abu Dhabi.

Manazel Medical City Website http://manazel-medical-city.squarespace.com/ Architectural design is an iterative process. A journey through thought, trial and error, and collaboration. A process that leads to a comprehensive project that not only thinks about beauty and aesthetics, but also the people who will be inhabiting it and the place in which it inhabits. This website is meant to be glimpse into the process of design at SGJJR and its outcomes. Partnering with the marketing director, I designed a website that lead people through the extensive design process that SGJJR goes through on their projects. With directIon on what this project was to become I was given complete control on this project. It is meant to be a storyboard through the different steps architects undergo to create a comprehensive building design.

2.3 Kumar Residence Site: Littleton, CO House Size: 7,947 square feet Project Type: Custom Single Family Home Firm: Cline Design Group
Erica and Rajiv Kumar and their three children came to CDG with the dream of being a part of designing their own home. They choose a site in an up-and-coming Littleton neighborhood that has a spectacular view of the Colorado foothills. The site has a grade change of 20 feet which led the design of a walk-out basement, a large patio outside of the kitchen, and great room that had unblocked views of the foothills. Both clients were easy to work with and helped on every bit of the process. The home

features large gathering spaces for entertaining, a half basketball court in the basement, a fitness room, and a lofted play room for the kids. The centerpiece for the home is the turret staircase that is framed by a light mountain ledge stone to highlight the dark stained staircase. This home was a finalist for the 2015 Home Builder’s Association Mame Awards for Best Custom Home Architecture with building coverage under 5,000 square feet.

Baby Boomer Housing
M.Arch Thesis Project Site: Austin, TX Size: 186, 269 sqaure feet Project Type: Senior Housing
Baby Boomers have always been a generation that makes their own rules and sets their own standards. Much like they have in the past, Boomers will expect very different things than that of their parents, changing in the way we think about senior housing. This project takes a critical look at senior living design to propose a model for independent living senior apartments based on what Boomers desire. Located in a burgeoning area of East Austin, this building takes advantage of its location to help promote an

environmentally and socially healthy lifestyle. The design took cues from continuing care retirement communities, the leading model of senior care, and new apartment buildings tailored towards young professionals, which coincidentally provides the lifestyle Boomers are seeking. The result is a 104-unit mid-rise apartment building that provides support for multiple levels of social engagement with other neighbors as well as aging-in-place tactics meant to ensure that this could be a home where one could live their life, happily.

3 In today’s industry, buildings significantly help contribute to the waste of energy and material resources during their construction, use, and demolition. In order to minimize this waste, the concept of zero energy buildings have gained attention around the world. This project addressed this growing concept and created a design for a house that achieves carbon emissions standards conforming to those set by the ZEB Pilot house. Designed by the international firm Snøhetta; this house is a net positive single-family house that

produces more energy than it ends up using. This home is mindful of its context as well as its carbon footprint and becomes a place where not only the residents benefit, but also the environment. It promotes a renewed connection with the outdoors in a way that typical residential homes fail to ever realize. From the materials, to the residents, to the program, this building rethinks the way we design and the way we live. This is the SHIFT HOUSE.

Shift:
An underutilized asphalt N in the heart of a vibrant site neighborhood in Eugene, OR.
Divide the maximum allowed square footage (2,000 sf) by programmatic sizing to reflect the commercial and residential zoning in the area.
Shift the massing to allow for greater southern exposure for sunlight and solar heat gain. This shift also creates a courtyard which allows for a secured outdoor gathering space.
Open:
Restore & Protect:
Open up apertures to optimize day lighting within the buildings and create opportunity for passive ventilation.
Restore the landscape back to a natural state by creating rain gardens similar to wetlands that use to be here. A raised walkway protects the landscape from degradation.

Shift House Sustainable Strategies 1. Green Roof: Insulates roof with vegetation to reduce heat island effect. 2. Water Catchment: Stores rainwater collected from roof. Excess water is pumped into retention ponds in landscape. 3. Solar Shading: Allows light and solar heat gain during the winter months and shades from the harsh summer sun. 4. Passive Ventilation: Stack and cross ventilation naturally cool indoor spaces. 5. Radiant Floor Heating: Hot water is pumped through floors to heat indoor spaces. 6. Solar Hot Water + PV Panels: Produces hot water for the home and electric energy. Panels work at 21% efficiency.

The concept of opportunity is something abundantly present in this Oakland neighborhood; This area was built on opportunity. The Key System Transit Company inhabited this building from the mid-20th century until their eventual collapse. They created opportunity for hundreds of thousands of people to travel around the bay area through mass transit trains and ferries. The Center for Independent Living + Culture aims to create opportunity for artists. The goal of the organization is to provide people, both with and without disabilities, with the services to
