Texas is Transforming

its Landscape with State-of-the-Art Complexes

New facilities across the state aim to nurture athletic talent and boost sports tourism

Texas is poised to elevate its reputation as a sports powerhouse by investing in state-of-the-art sports complexes across the state. With a focus on fostering athletic talent, enhancing sports tourism and promoting health and wellness, these new facilities are designed to accommodate a wide range of sports, from traditional favorites like football and basketball to emerging activities like esports and rock climbing. This commitment to quality sports infrastructure promises to inspire the next generation of athletes while solidifying Texas's status as a leader in the sports arena. Here are some cities that are building new venues or are expanding on established complexes.

Arlington

The Arlington Independent School District is building a new $34 million athletic complex that will serve as the new home for both Martin and Seguin High Schools. The future Michael Glaspie Field Athletic Complex will upgrade the existing practice field at Martin High School.

The new stadium will feature around 10,000 seats, a spacious press box, locker rooms, restrooms and concession areas. The architects have integrated the facility into the surrounding campus, considering factors such as traffic flow—accommodating cars, school buses and pedestrians— as well as parking. To ensure a smooth transition to the

Round Rock Sports Center

neighborhood, a landscaped buffer and fencing will separate the stadium from nearby homes, and modern LED lighting will be used, offering efficient illumination with less light spillage and quick activation. Construction is set to be completed by the end of 2024.

Beaumont

The Beaumont Athletic Complex is a key venue for hosting a variety of softball tournaments at the regional, state and national levels. With 12 fields, the complex can accommodate events ranging from 10 to over 120 teams, alongside facilities for soccer, basketball and sand volleyball, catering to a wide array of recreational needs. The newest addition to this complex is the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center.

The Tennis Center boasts 24 courts—four covered and 20 uncovered—featuring beautifully designed lighted hard courts. A 4,500-square-foot clubhouse enhances the experience for tennis players, equipped with a pro shop, lounge, locker rooms, restrooms, and a spacious covered porch. The facility is a hub for numerous tennis tournaments, including city championships and USTA Pro Future events.

College Station

Since the early 2000s, the popularity of esports has surged, especially among college students. Texas A&M University is advancing its esports initiatives by transforming a former Macy's store into a dedicated esports campus.

In 2022, the College Station City Council approved a $7.3 million contract for the property, which will cater to over 2,000 students and alumni. The 103,888-square-foot facility, located just three miles from the university, will house around 400 gaming stations, along with a retail space for food, beverages and esports gear. It aims to host not only A&M's collegiate esports team, comprised of 2,778 students, but also K-12 programs and gaming enthusiasts from across Central Texas.

Lubbock

Lubbock Parks and Recreation is set to invest $8 million in expanding the Tom Martin Sports Complex in South Lubbock. This funding will facilitate the construction of a new quadruplex, adding four larger fields, aiming to

attract more teams and tournaments to the area and generate additional revenue. Beyond this expansion, the Parks and Recreation Department has plans to enhance existing fields and improve the overall complex.

Texas Tech University also recently unveiled a new $48 million Sports Performance Center, a multi-purpose facility designed to support the university's 17 intercollegiate sports. The center includes a nutrition space, strength and conditioning areas, a sports medicine recovery center, and the Petersen Family Indoor Football Practice Facility, featuring seven large glass doors that provide ample natural light.

Roanoke

A new 122-acre youth sports complex is under construction in Fort Worth. The $75 million Play It Forward sports center is slated to open along TX-114 in Roanoke.

The complex is set to include: Five full-sized baseball fields with lighting and turf, three soccer fields that also accommodate 7-on-7 football, rugby, and lacrosse, an athletic training facility, a 150-200-key hotel with a conference space, high-end restaurants and mixed-use retail, a medical center for athletes and guests and 1,000+ parking spaces. The sports fields are expected to open in late 2025, with the mixed-use community areas following in 2026.

Round Rock

Construction is underway for an expansion at the Round Rock Sports Center, expected to be completed by early 2026. This project will add two new courts, increasing the total to eight. Opened in January 2014, the 82,800-square-foot facility has become a premier destination for sports and events, featuring six basketball courts that can be converted into 12 volleyball courts.

The new expansion will offer a separate entrance and is designed to enhance operational flexibility for event management. With the additional courts, the facility can host larger and more varied events, such as a 16-court volleyball tournament or simultaneous competitions for basketball and cheerleading.

The Sports Center has previously hosted many statewide and national events, including the USA Judo Senior National Championships and various cheer and dance competitions, benefiting local businesses, hotels, and restaurants. It also serves the community with youth basketball, volleyball, fitness camps, and other recreational activities.

The Round Rock Multipurpose Complex is a great place to host outdoor tournaments.
