Packaging Design Dilemmas & Repak’s Prevent & Save Programme Repak is a not for profit organisation set up by industry in 1997. As a packaging compliance scheme, we help our 2,400 members to comply with EU packaging waste legislation. If your business has a turnover of greater than €1 million and places 10 tonnes or more of packaging on the Irish market, then Repak can help you with your obligation to fund recycling in Ireland. Since the formation of Repak, Ireland has grown packaging recycling from around 15% at that time to 68% today. The benefits of joining Repak are many and include: • Full legal compliance for packaging placed on the Irish market. • Cost effective solution as an alternative to self-compliance. • Full reporting to the Local Authorities and the Environmental Protection Agency. • Repak certification and window stickers that provide the chance to show corporate environmental responsibility. • No requirement to display that you take back packaging or have to have onsite recycling facility for that packaging. • Allows businesses to use their Repak member status to promote their environmental credentials (e.g. business websites) alongside inclusion in Repak public campaigns, social and print media. • Company listed on the Repak website for greater visibility. • Use Green Dot logo on packaging. However, another key benefit of Repak membership is that we also provide guidance from Repak’s Prevent & Save program to help understand best practice in packaging and recycling and help our members to reduce waste and costs. Sustainable Packaging Design Companies today are under increasing pressure from consumers and government to reduce the amount of packaging they use, particularly when those products are packed in plastics. Although the misuse of plastics is undoubtedly a major concern, it is important to recognise that calls for reductions in packaging can conflict with calls for manufacturers and retailers to reduce food waste. Globally, we throw away around a third of the food we produce and recently many of Ireland’s retailers signed a Food Waste Charter which aims by 2030 to: “halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.” Therefore we must take a structured approach to reducing plastic usage where possible. Apart from food, packaging plays an essential role in containing, preserving and protecting almost
all of the products we take for granted on a daily basis. As we strive to eliminate plastic packaging in particular from products it is essential that we do so with the life cycles of those products in mind. Less packaging is not always more environmentally friendly and if packaging is not fit for purpose its use risks not only creating product losses but can even increase packaging waste overall when your package and product both end up in the bin. Repak’s Prevent and Save Programme
business can achieve the best use of available resources. This in turn helps to reduce the overall amount of packaging you place on the Irish market. This short on site survey usually leads to: • Reduced material procurement bills, through less packaging being required. • Savings in producer responsibility fees, by reducing the amount of packaging being placed on the market. • Suggestions to improve your current waste management practices and maximise recycling.
Repak is here to help its members to optimise packaging in a controlled manner through our Prevent and Save packaging optimisation programme. Our dedicated packaging technology team can assist your business on any aspect of sustainable packaging design and look at ways to optimise existing packaging systems. This can save on both material and money for your business. It is also free of charge to Repak members.
A free confidential report on packaging and waste management optimisation.
Waste prevention methods help to create less packaging waste in the first place. These methods include prevention (removal or avoidance of certain packaging) and minimisation (light-weighting of packaging). The next most favourable option to prevention or minimisation is packaging which our team can also help to advise on where feasible.
Typical recommendations include: • Removal of non-essential packaging. • Light weighting of material. • Introduction of closed-loop packaging return systems. • Pallet layout redesign to maximise load efficiencies. • Recommendations to increase recycling and reduce your waste bills.
The “stop waste before it happens” strategy is an integral part of how industry now approaches packaging decisions - avoiding over-packaged, disposable, and non-reusable or non-recyclable products where possible. This decision making process also considers why packaging is present rather than simply eliminating it in a fashion that is detrimental to both product and package integrity. Our team can also assist your business in deciding what is important to you in terms of your packaging priorities through the development of a packaging policy and preferred packaging specification. A free packaging optimisation survey at your premises. The Prevent and Save Programme examines all types of packaging, both into and out of a company. During our site survey we examine primary, secondary and tertiary packaging and our packaging team can find ways of optimising packaging systems as a whole, so that your
After completing the on-site survey, we will provide you with a detailed confidential report. This report guides your company through the steps required to realise a reduction in your packaging costs and packaging waste. Repak will follow up with you where you need any assistance.
Ongoing updates on packaging optimisation best practice. The Prevent and Save section of the Repak website is regularly updated with tips and industry case studies showing examples of how Repak members are improving their packaging systems and reducing packaging waste. These publications are free of charge to Repak members and are designed to share best practice amongst our members. We are always looking for Repak members to participate. To avail of this free service contact either Brian Walsh (01 4619 205) or Colm Munnelly (01 4619 237) or email prevention@repak.ie for more information.
