cover story

article written by Taylor Fabus

A rare combination

of pedigree and performance longevity has been setting Extremely Hot Chips apart from his peers for more than a decade now. Since 2018, the handsome 2006 15.2 hand chestnut stallion has been owned by Terry and Tammy Bradshaw and resides at their ranch in Thackerville, OK. Affectionately known as “Chips,” Extremely Hot Chips has earned the nickname Mr. Dependable around the barn. Kate Jackson, the breeding manager at Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses, describes Chips as cool, calm, and collected. “If Chips were a human, people would say ‘that guy has his life together,’” Jackson

teases. “I think his focus and demeanor have had a lot to do with his success both as a show horse and as a sire.” LEADING MONEY WINNER OF ALL TIME FOR AQHA STALLIONS Extremely Hot Chips is the leading money earning AQHA western stallion of all time. His decade-long show career is impressive. He began winning in 2008 as a talented two-year old, taking home many futurity wins and an NSBA World Championship. As a three-year-old, he won a Congress Championship and was awarded the bronze trophy in the Junior Western Pleasure at the AQHA World Show. His domination in the show pen continued until the 2017 AQHA World Show where he became the oldest stallion to claim the title

consistency “Chips” was Top 10 at the AQHA World Show for 5 Years in a Row.

of Reserve World Champion in the Senior Western Pleasure. AN EXCEPTIONAL SHOW CAREER Extremely Hot Chips retired from showing with an extraordinary list of accomplishments, more than $90,000 in earnings, and 256 AQHA points. When most stallions are retired after one or two big wins, Chips continued showing and winning for almost a decade. Jackson credits many talented individuals as being responsible for his continued successes. “Chips has had a great career due to wonderful management with great horseman and horsewoman guiding his path and care,” said Jackson. “At 15 years old he has no signs of showing his age and floats across the pasture with comfort and ease. Chip’s “job” in the show pen came very naturally to him. It was easy for him and I think he really enjoyed being a show horse. Horses don’t have a career as long as Chips did if they don’t really enjoy their job.” Chips’ winning ways were no accident. His pedigree is a carefully curated masterpiece. an AQHA World Championship in both Junior Western Pleasure and Junior Western Riding in the same year— and out of Miss Trophy Chip, who is sired by NSBA Hall of Fame sire Zips Chocolate Chip. A lineage rich with talent and athleticism, the same qualities that made Chip a force to be reckoned with in the show pen, are also making him a successful sire. As of January 2021, Extremely Hot Chips’ offspring have recorded more than 11,000 AQHA points and have earned more than $600,000 in earnings. His foals have won 3 AQHA Champion awards, 45 AQHA Superior awards and 136 AQHA Register of Merit awards. He is the sire of AQHA, NSBA, APHA, PtHA, and ApHC World and Reserve World Champions, along with multiple Quarter Horse Congress Champions. DIVERSITY AS A SIRE Although most of Chips’ success was in the Western Pleasure arena, his offspring are proving that he has versatility as a sire. In 2018 he was an AQHA Top 25 Sire 8 | PREMIER | MAY 2021

of English All-Around Point-Earners and an AQHA Top 25 Sire of Hunter Under Saddle Point-Earners. He ranks in the top two percent of AQHA Western All-Around sires based on money-earners. “Chips has sired champions in Western Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle and has produced great All-Around horses with the ability to change leads, stop on a dime, & lope over logs with great athleticism and grace,” said Jackson. “The diversity Chips brings to the table offers a lot of options for mare owners. His ability to cross disciplines makes him appealing to mare owners with different interests.” In these unprecedented times, stallion and mare owners must continue to adapt to a rapidly evolving industry and the Bradshaws have done so with ease. “For the 2021 breeding season, Terry and Tammy made the decision to set the fees for all of their stallions at $1000 plus shipping fees,” said Jackson. “This in no way is a reflection of the quality of stallions that they own or stand at Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses. 2020 was a tough year for most people and it was important to Terry and Tammy to do something to give back to breeders. It is important to them that anyone who wants to participate in the industry have the opportunity to do so.”
