>>hows that for ya Hows That For Ya, a 2017 gelding by Hot N Blazing out of Queen Of The Blues, was Morgan’s first Quarter Horse. Prior to purchasing “Howdy” at the 2020 AQHA World Championship Show, Morgan had successfully shown Appaloosas, winning National and Reserve National Championships. “After retiring my ApHC hunter under saddle horse, I reached out to Brad and Troy about helping me find a new futurity prospect. They were the ones who first proposed the idea of buying a Quarter Horse and giving AQHA shows a try. Shortly after that, they saw Howdy at the World Show and told me I needed to come try him out.” At the 2020 AQHA World Show, Howdy won Reserve World Championships in the Junior Hunter Under Saddle with Katy Jo Zuidema and Amateur Hunter Under Saddle with his previous owner, Sarah Nimigan. Morgan took the reins in 2021 and together she and Howdy
won multiple circuit championships at shows such as the Silver Dollar Circuit and Prairie Classic. Their year culminated with a bronze trophy in the L2 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle sixth-place finish in the L3 Amateur Hunter Under Saddle at the AQHA World Show. Looking to expand Howdy’s repertoire, earlier this year he was shipped to Tyler Haney in Florida to begin jumping and driving. While in Florida, Katy Jo Zuidema has been keeping him schooled in the Hunter Under Saddle. “At the start of this year, Brad and Troy proposed the idea of teaching Howdy to jump and drive,” said Morgan. “Howdy’s previous PREMIER | AUGUST 2022 | 31
trainer Katy Jo suggested Tyler Haney and she also agreed to show him in the Hunter Under Saddle while he is in Florida rather than trying to ship him back and forth between there and Texas. It really is a dream team.” Having a jumper is taking Morgan back to her roots in the horse industry. At the time she first started riding, Morgan was living in Oregon where Pony Club was extremely popular. Like most kids in her area, Morgan started out riding hunter-jumper ponies. “I’m so excited to have a jumper again,” said Morgan. “I haven’t jumped in 20 years but that’s where I got my start in the horses. Back then we rode every day in our hunt seat saddles so that’s really where I get my love of Hunter Under Saddle horses. As for the driving, it’s something I’ve never done but have always wanted to do. I’ll probably let Tyler show him this year but I’m looking forward to getting my turn next year.” Howdy will have a busy schedule in Tulsa, showing in the Open Hunter Under Saddle with Katy Jo, the Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle with Morgan, and the Working Hunter, Hunter Hack and Driving with Tyler Haney. “I’m really excited for the NSBA World with Howdy,” said Morgan. “It’s the first time I’ll get to see him show in the jumping and driving. Tyler keeps sending me videos and every time I tell him I’m more impressed. Howdy is just so pretty over fences and he’s absolutely beautiful in the cart.”
>>made it in time Made It In Time is a 2018 mare by Machine Made out of Right To Be Radical, who Morgan showed last year in the 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Western Pleasure. “The fall of 2020, when I showed by dad’s horse at the ApHC World Show, was the first time a had shown western in fifteen years,” said Morgan. “So, when I started showing Maren the following year, the 32 | PREMIER | AUGUST 2022
Western Pleasure was still brand new to me. She was such a good teacher. As far as 3-year-olds go, I don’t think I could have been any luckier. She is so easy and has a disposition that makes her worth her weight in gold.” While Morgan will continue to show Maren in the Western Pleasure, this year the focus has been on the Trail. “We started showing Maren in the Trail last year as a three-year-old,” said Brad Ost. “She was great at it last year but going into the Junior this year, she has really stepped up and we are excited to see her continued success in this arena.” Earlier this year, Morgan flushed an embryo out of Made It In Time.

Upon inquiring about Bentley, Morgan was told by the horse’s trainer, Laura Spell, that he was not for sale at that time but was promised that she would be the first to know if circumstances changed. As luck would have it, earlier this year, previous owner, Morgan Hobson, decided to change disciplines and offered the gelding for sale. As promised, Laura called Morgan first. “I purchased him in April and my first show as the APHA World Show,” said Morgan. “I had a blast. Prior to showing at the World Show this year, I really knew nothing about APHA or their programs. I was really impressed. They do a great job with their futurities, which paid out very well. I really appreciated how they did their awards presentations and made if feel like a big deal to win.” At their first show together, Morgan and Bentley won Reserve in the Non-Pro 3-Year-Old Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle and Reserve in the 3-Year-Old Limited Open Hunter Under Saddle, an accomplishment Morgan is especially proud of. “Laura had another horse she was committed to showing in the 3-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, so I showed him,” said Morgan. “I ended up winning Reserve in the Limited division, and as a non-pro rider I was super happy with that.” The next stop for NAME will be the NSBA World Show where he will compete in the 3-Year-Old Open and Color Open Hunter Under Saddle events with Laura Spell and the 3-YearOld Non-Pro and Color Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle events with Morgan. From there it will be on to the All-American Quarter Horse Congress, one of Morgan’s favorite shows of the year. “I dreamed about showing at the Congress when I was a little girl,” said Morgan. “Living in Michigan, Columbus was only a few hours away, so I went and shopped every year before I had a horse of a high enough caliber to compete there. That is the show I always get most excited for.”

“She will be competing in the 3-Year-Old Versatility class at the World Show,” said Morgan. “She’s already proven herself in the Western Pleasure, and she is great lead changer and very pretty over the poles, so this class is perfect for her. I watched the class last year and thought it was so cool, so I’m really excited to have one competing in it this year.”
>>what lies ahead In addition to her current show team, Morgan also has a few other horses she is looking forward to showing in the coming years. They include White Claww, 2-year-old double registered gelding by A Sudden Holiday out of the dam of Morgan’s 3-year-old, Got What I Got. “Claww reminds me a lot of Annie,” said Morgan. “Brad and Troy are currently riding him, and he’s got so much talent. With all the different programs and incentives offered for 3-year-olds, we’ve decided to wait to show him until next year.” It’s safe to say that Morgan Miller has come a long way from her days in Pony Club. Although her first love will always be Hunter Under Saddle, she never expected to enjoy the Western Pleasure as much as she does. In fact, she’s been having so much fun with it that she finds herself gravitating towards the western horses when looking at new prospects. “I’m in my comfort zone when I’m showing in the Hunter Under Saddle,” said Morgan. “Last year I had to spend a lot of time figuring out how to show a Western horse but now that I’ve learned more, I’m having a lot of fun with it. I think I really enjoy it on the horses that I have. I’ve always enjoyed the younger futurity horses, so I never focused much on the pattern classes. In the past I had only really done that with HUS horses so get to see the western futurity horses move on to the all-around is really cool.”
