Feel Good, Sparkle More The fashion side of the horse industry helps exhibitors fulfill two goals. For some, it’s to look and feel their best inside of the show arena. For others, it’s to grab the judges’ attention. For many, it’s both. Over the years, Kevin Garcia Originals has designed and sold thousands of custom-made pieces. It’s nearly impossible to get through an entire show without seeing at least one of Kevin’s creations. But who is the man behind Kevin Garcia Originals?

The Man Behind The Design Kevin Garcia has had a clear and bold passion for the fashion industry for as long as he can remember. The horses, however, became a part of his life when they came alongside his other half, husband Brian Isbell Garcia, who is a World Champion horse trainer. The two met when Kevin was attending the University of Tennessee, where he majored in Interior Design and graduated with a B.S. in Retail and Consumer Science. Kevin began attending shows with Brian and as their relationship grew, Kevin began looking for a way to combine the two things he loved most—fashion and Brian. The more time Kevin spent at horse shows, the more he came to love the horse industry and the people involved in it. He became passionate about the fashion being worn inside the show ring and wanted to help exhibitors look and feel their best. Kevin’s venture into making show clothes began twenty years ago with just a few friends and some of the riders in Brian’s barn.

“I remember convincing Joetta (Meredith) Bell to let me make her an outfit. It was my first one,” Kevin said. “It only had about 60 crystals on it. One of the next outfits I made was for Vicki Holt. It was slick white leather. That was definitely a different time.” Those two women and the designs he created for them have stuck with Kevin. To this day he is grateful that they gave him a chance. As his business has grown over the years, Kevin has strived to stay true to his roots making clothes uniquely designed for each customer. “Personal touch and service mean everything to me,” Kevin shared. “I am constantly choosing fabrics, selecting crystals and add ons, drawing designs, or sewing crystals on outfits myself. Attention to detail is so important to me.” From the initial meeting with a customer, to delivery of the final product, Kevin loves being involved in every step of the process. And since

each piece Kevin creates is one of a kind, continuously coming up with new ideas takes a lot of creativity. “My head is always going,” said Kevin. “I gather inspiration from everywhere. I never really stop creating and designing. It’s what I love.”

Kevin Garcia Originals Makes It Personal Kevin Garcia Originals, known by many as “KGO,” is a horse show fashion business that designs and makes custom western show shirts and suits, as well as custom hunt coats. Although each piece is designed to the customer’s specifications, KGO believes that simplicity goes further and brings the most sophistication and design aesthetic. “I don’t want to be limited to what is already in the pen,” said Kevin. “I love to follow trends but have a unique perspective and a different eye for what is flattering. I love strong lines that enhance the body versus too much. If you wear what looks good on you it will automatically make your horse look good.” When it comes to selecting a designer, Kevin encourages people to do their research and find a designer whose designs they like, but even more importantly, who they can work and communicate well with. “Just because something is beautiful on the rack, doesn’t mean it will look like that on everyone,” said Kevin. “Choose a designer who is willing to design something that is flattering and fitting for you. And of course, something unique.” 36 | PREMIER | APRIL 2022

To bring the customer’s vision to life, Kevin loves to get inspiration pictures from every client so that he can get clear feel for their style. “When people contact me about creating an outfit, I like to start by interviewing them,” said Kevin. “We go over color combinations, inspiration photos and figure out what they are wanting to put out in the world.” Once Kevin understands what the customer is looking for, KGO designers get to work, hand sketching every single detail of the outfit before any sewing begins. Even after the outfit has been delivered, Kevin stands behind his company’s clothing with a strong commitment to customer service and satisfaction, offering free repair and refurbishment for normal wear and tear on any item with the KGO logo. “Something that sets us apart is that we offer the original owner free repairs for the life of each outfit,” Kevin said. “We take great pride and confidence in the product we are offering, and we stand behind what we make.” Recently, KGO has partnered with Back Road Trading Company to help customers complete their show ring look with a saddle pad that matches their new outfit. When you order a shirt or jacket from KGO, Back Road Trading will make you a matching pad. “We enjoy working with and supporting other businesses and are excited about this new partnership for our customers,” said Kevin. “Part of the overall picture is how the shirt matches the pad. A custom saddle pad really helps tie the whole look together.” Kevin and the entire KGO family understand that custom attire for the show ring can be an expensive investment. They believe every customer they design for is important, no matter what size their budget is. Keeping the price-conscious consumer in mind, KGO is also working on a new line of retro show shirts. The shirts are designed for the exhibitor’s comfort, particularly during the hot summer show months.

“People save their hard-earned money to purchase show clothing and I understand how important this is,” said Kevin. “Not every exhibitor can afford a closet full of show clothes so whether we are making one piece for them, or multiple different outfits, each customer gets our same attention and commitment. I have customers that I have been designing clothes for going on 20 years, and now I’m designing for their children. It is the best feeling. I love this business and what I do.”

father handles all the shipping and even makes deliveries to vendors. Although some of KGO’s employees may be Kevin’s blood relatives, he is very clear that every employee is part of the family. “I work with the best people who inspire me and each other every day,” said Kevin. “We all share a passion for what we do

Exciting Days Ahead 2022 will mark some very exciting anniversaries for Kevin. He just celebrated 30 years together with Brian, 20 years of success with KGO, and together the two are celebrating 20 years since Brian won the Congress on Allocate Your Assets. “We found ‘Al’ as a yearling and Brian showed him to win a Congress Championship in the 2-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle Futurity, Kevin said. “It’s definitely a year of celebrating and remembering the journey.” As they celebrate major milestones, Kevin is also looking forward to the next season of his business, while remaining grateful for the opportunity to make a living from his and a back-pack drive at the beginning of the school year.
