By Katie Huntley, Rose + Thyme Floral Choosing the cake flowers depends on the theme because the possibilities are ultimately endless. Wanting a boho minimalist vibe? Have your florist throw some dried grasses on there. Going for a wildflower vibe? Your cake can show it. Summer garden party wedding? Your cake can indicate that too! The flowers help to showcase the colors and theme of the wedding in many ways, and adding that element to the cake is always a good idea!

The wedding cake is a classic part of the wedding. From the cutting to the “cake smash”, it’s a fun way to celebrate the wedding and is actually a symbol of good luck and hope to the couple. However, how should you design your cake? What should it look like? Inside it must be delicious, but the guests are going to see the outside too! The cake can be a centerpiece and fun focal point of the wedding, but how do you make that delectable count? Cake flowers are the answer! There are so many different ways to make that cake look like a showstopper and a few simple flowers can really make all the difference!

As far as design goes, talk to your cake decorator and see if they would like to put the flowers on the cake before asking your florist to do it. The cake is the baker’s masterpiece and you want to keep it that way! However, we would suggest asking the florist for the flowers whether or not the cake decorator decides to do it. That way there is harmony throughout all the florals in the wedding! If the cake decorator is fine with the florist doing the flowers, make sure they know they will be the ones doing it so they can be there and coordinate when the cake arrives! Whatever cake flowers you decide to do...remember that it can be the finishing touch to the wedding and a fantastic focal point for all the guests! It is well worth the couple extra dollars to make your cake really stand out!

ONCE WE DETERMINE OUR BUDGET, WHERE DO WE START WITH THE PLANNING?

CAN MY STORY BE TOLD THROUGH MY ENTERTAINMENT?

This will give you an idea of what your photographers goals are when they are shooting a session/wedding so you can make sure they line up with your goals and they aren’t just saying “oh yeah I totally do that” when you tell them what you’re wanting! This also helps you to see more depth in their work and the kind of thought and feeling that goes into their work, maybe you’ll vibe with it and maybe you won’t but knowing that will be a game changer and ultimately result in the happiest outcome!

Once you’ve determined a solid budget, discuss your priorities as a couple. Elements that matter most should be moved toward the top of the list for funds allocation. Once you have your priorities ranked, start tackling the biggest ticket items first: venue, food & beverage, photography, videography, and floral are often the largest expenses. Keep in mind, too, the difference between fixed-cost elements that don’t change based on guest count (such as band or venue) and those with variable costs determined by the guest count like catering and floral.

Every couple has a story. It’s unique, quirky, hard and beautiful at the same time. I believe that your entertainment can tell that story. Think about it. What makes a love song so beautiful? Is it the Tempo? The Lyrics? The way it was mastered? Or is it simply the story behind it? I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess you’re thinking its a little of everything. You are absolutely right, so should your entertainment. Find Entertainment that complements your story and brings your vision to life.

Q. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF DESIGNING FLORALS & GOWNS? A. My favorite part has to be getting to know each bride and customizing either a dress and/or her wedding florals to bring her wedding dreams to reality. I love choosing the perfect fabric or lace to compliment her personal style. The floral aspect becomes an added element to the creative process by designing a bouquet which gives dimension and color. Whether I am sewing or designing in the floral studio, I love being able to weave each brides personality and style together through the mediums of flowers and fabrics to achieve her desired result.

A. My love for florals started at as a young girl when I worked at a local flower shop in my home town in Texas. The floral shop’s owner allowed me to start with prepping and cleaning flowers. Soon after I started designing smaller bouquets and florals. I was immediately in love with every detail of floral design! Fast forward 25 years through college, marriage, and 6 children later, I made the decision in 2017 to return full time to florals and sewing as a career and opened Hobble Creek Design. While I had continued being a seamstress throughout the years, bringing my floral talents to the public was a dream come true. I absolutely love my job!

Rehearsal Dinners 101: Choosing the Perfect Venue The rehearsal dinner is a casual or formal gathering for the wedding party before the wedding that provides an opportunity for both families to get to know one another in a fun, relaxed environment. It’s a time to mingle, do a gift exchange, offer toasts, and provide some last-minute instruction about the actual wedding details. Rehearsal dinners vary as much as the wedding itself. They can be formal banquets or garden parties, casual picnics, or even a BBQ.

WHO TO INVITE Turn the dinner into a fabulous welcome party - if your wedding is mostly local

friends and family but a few key people traveled far to come to your wedding, extend the invitation to them as a thank you for their extra effort. If you’re throwing a destination wedding or a party where at least half of the guests are from out of town, show your appreciation by inviting everyone to some kind of night-before festivity.

WHERE TO HAVE IT A sit-down dinner at a hotel ballroom or nice restaurant is the norm, but there’s no right or wrong when you plan your rehearsal dinner. Restaurants are ideal for

many because couples can focus on the more meaningful details - knowing that the food is taken care of! However, relaxing in a nice backyard, at an art museum, or even on the beach are perfectly acceptable locations. It just depends on your style and budget.

WHEN TO INVITE YOUR GUESTS To help your guests manage their schedules, send out invitations with, or shortly after, your wedidng invitations. This will not only help your guests plan their travel, but ensure timely RSVPs.

HOW TO INVITE YOUR GUESTS If your rehearsal dinner will be at a high end restaurant, hotel ballroom, etc., you should send formal invitations. If, on the other hand, your rehearsal dinner will be more casual, such as an intimate gathering at your future in-laws home, then you can be more casual with your invitations. You can send e-vites or send DIY invites. Make sure it’s clear to your guests where they need to be and when. Your guests will want to dress appropriately, so details are important!
