Schon vor unzähligen Jahren wandten die Menschen die Köpfe nach oben, staunten, fragten sich, was das alles soll. Und das irgendwie Tröstliche ist ja: Auch wenn wir mittlerweile eine ganze Menge mehr wissen und unseren grossen Zeh sogar schon mal wagemutig in die Badewanne des Kosmos gedippt haben, sind wir den Mysterien des Weltalls nicht erheblich näher gekommen.

Of course, this is not by chance: looking upwards, deep into the star-speckled night sky, is as old as the question of the meaning of life. Countless years ago, people turned their heads to the sky, marvelling and wondering what it was all about. And the kind of comforting thing is: even though we now know a great deal more and have even daringly dipped our toe into the bathtub of the cosmos, we have not come significantly closer to understanding the mysteries of the universe.

Das Projekt ist eine Übernahme des Kunstwerks «Null Stern – the only star is you» der Konzeptkünstler Frank und Patrik Riklin sowie des Hotelexperten Daniel Charbonnier. Einfach wow.

Das äusserst betrübliche Zauberwort lautet hier Lichtverschmutzung, eines der eher weniger wünschenswerten Nebenprodukte unserer modernen Zeit. Unsere Städte werden gar nicht mehr dunkel, senden konstant Licht aus, strahlen auch um Mitternacht hell wie der Tag. Das hüllt die Sterne ein, vertreibt sie von unserem Himmel. Wo wir bei absoluter Dunkelheit allein mit blossem Auge 6500 verschiedene Sterne (lies: 6500 verschiedene Sonnen mit einer Vielzahl um sie kreisender Planeten) erkennen können, sind in den grossen Städten manchmal nur wenige Dutzend, oftmals sogar gar keine Sterne zu sehen. Unsere Milchstrasse – immerhin die Heimatgalaxie, in der wir um die Sonne rasen – ist fast vollständig aus dem kollektiven Bewusstsein verschwunden.

The utterly sad magic word here is light pollution, one of the rather less desirable by-products of our modern age. Our cities no longer get dark at all, they constantly emit light, shining as bright as day, even at midnight. That light envelops the stars and banishes them from our sky. Whereas we can see 6500 different stars (i.e. 6500 different suns with a multitude of orbiting planets) with the naked eye alone in absolute darkness, sometimes only a few dozen, often no stars at all, can be seen in the big cities. Our Milky Way – the home galaxy in which we race around the sun – has almost completely disappeared from the collective consciousness.

Aus diesem Grund werden mehr und mehr Sternenparks rund um den Globus eingerichtet. Diese Inseln der Dunkelheit versprechen einen spektakulären Blick auf die Magie des Nachthimmels und geben uns Menschen zudem ein Gefühl, das wir zumindest als Städter gar nicht mehr kennen: echte, tiefe, ungestörte Dunkelheit. Auch im Engadin ist das möglich. Bei einer Übernachtung in der ehemaligen Sternwarte im Berghotel Randolins hoch über St. Moritz zum Beispiel, einer einzigartigen Unterkunft, deren geöffnete Kuppel einen unverstellten, unbeschreiblichen Blick auf die Juwelen über St. Moritz freigibt. Oder in einem Bett unter freiem Himmel, mitten in der Natur, beschienen vom fernen Glanz unserer Milchstrasse. Oder in einem abgelegenen Tiny House, dem Wohntrend schlechthin.

For this reason, more and more dark sky reserves are being established around the globe. These islands of darkness promise a spectacular view of the magic of the night sky and also give us humans a feeling that we, at least the city dwellers, no longer even know: real, deep, unadulterated darkness. This is also possible in the Engadine. On an overnight stay in the former observatory at the Berghotel Randolins high above St. Moritz, for example, a unique place to stay whose open dome reveals an unobstructed, indescribable view of the jewels in the sky above. Or in a bed under the open sky, in the midst of nature, illuminated by the distant glow of our Milky Way. Or in a secluded tiny house, the latest lifestyle trend par excellence. But of course it's also possible by simply going for a walk after nightfall. Don't forget your torch.

Cube Aletsch – übernachten auf 2869 m Höhe. Inmitten der Berglandschaft des UNESCO-Welterbes Jungfrau-Aletsch. Bei Nacht begleitet der Sternenhimmel, dem man durch die grosse Glasfront des Cubes ganz nah sein kann.

 Bienenkorb mit Eiger-Nordwand- und Sterneblick. Der auf Stelzen ruhende und aus Holz gezimmerte Bienenkorb befindet sich im Garten der Jugendherberge von Grindelwald im Berner Oberland. In das Dach wurde eine vier Quadratmeter große Glasscheibe integriert – zum Blick vom französischen Doppelbett in den Himmel und die Bergwelt.

 Was nützt es, wenn man zwar die Sterne sieht, aber nicht weiss, welche sich gerade am Himmelszelt zeigen? Gut, dass man auf dem Pilatus am Vierwaldstättersee während der Astronomieabende gleich auch noch eine Einführung von Experten erhält und durch professionelle Teleskope den Nachthimmel betrachten kann.

It's a good thing that during the astronomy evenings on Mount Pilatus on Lake Lucerne you also get an introduction from experts and can look at the night sky through professional telescopes.  Am Monte Generoso – kann der Sternenhimmel vom Bett aus beobachtet werden. In einem eleganten Holzhäuschen namens «Momò Bellavista». Es begeistert durch ein Glasdach mit freier Sicht auf den Nachthimmel. Die Lage am Rande der grossen Anhöhe Bellavista bietet ein herrliches Panorama von der Poebene hin bis zu den Alpen. Das große Fenster mit Blick auf den Wald und die gläserne Eingangstür, ermöglichen ein völliges Eintauchen in die Natur.

 Aus einem Futtersilo wird ein Sternguckernest: Im kuschligen Doppelbett liegen Gäste direkt unter dem freien Sternenhimmel im oberen Teil des Silos, dessen Deckel bei Bedarf einfach geschlossen werden kann. Das Sternguckernest liegt auf dem Bolderhof, einem Erlebnisbauernhof. Das historische Stein am Rhein liegt nur wenige Minuten entfernt.

Aber natürlich geht es auch einfach so, bei einem Spaziergang nach Anbruch der Dunkelheit. Vergessen Sie Ihre Taschenlampe nicht.

Stargazing, wie man gemeinhin zu jenen nächtlichen Unternehmungen sagt, ist ein Erlebnis für alle Sinne. Es kann beruhigen und inspirieren, beflügeln und neu sensibilisieren für den Planet, auf dem wir leben. Es ist eine neue Art zu reisen, eine neue Art, die Welt zu erleben. Zugleich ist es Wellness für unseren Geist, für unsere Augen. Die sind ja eigentlich nur noch Dunkelheit gewöhnt, wenn wir sie schliessen. Kombiniert mit einem neuen Reisegefühl, mit überraschenden Unterkünften, lockt das Engadin mit einer Rekalibrierung und mit Entschleunigung. Nur folgerichtig für eine Region, die das Seelenbaumeln kultiviert und das gute Leben für sich gepachtet hat.

Es verwundert also nur wenig, dass sich auch hier, inmitten der schroffen Felsen und auf den Gipfeln, Türme dem Himmel entgegenrecken. Die Sternwarte Academia bei Samedan nördlich von St. Moritz sucht mit wachem Auge den Himmel ab, lädt regelmässig zu Vorträgen und Führungen. Ein Blick durch das Teleskop auf Gestirne und Konstellationen hat bei aller Faszination immer auch etwas Melancholisches: Das Sichten ferner Sterne ist ein Blick in eine ferne Vergangenheit, ihr Licht erreicht unsere Erde unter Umständen erst nach 1000 Jahren. Doch es hat auch etwas Tröstliches: Hier, in der Dunkelheit unter dem Schweizer Sternenhimmel, wird uns mal wieder bewusst, wie kostbar und wunderschön das Leben ist. «Stargazing ist ein Erlebnis für alle Sinne. It's a new way to travel, a new way to experience the world. At the same time, it is wellness for our mind, for our eyes. They are actually only used to darkness when we close them. Combined with a new sense of travel, with surprising accommodations, the Engadine invites you to recalibrate and wind down. Only logical for a region that cultivates "soul relaxation" and has leased the good life for itself.

So it comes as little surprise that here too, amid the craggy rocks and on the peaks, towers reach into the sky. The Academia Observatory near Samedan, north of St. Moritz, scans the sky with a watchful eye and regularly hosts lectures and guided tours. A look through the telescope at the stars and constellations always has something melancholy about it, despite all the fascination: looking at distant stars is a glance back into a distant past; their light may take 1000 years to reach our earth. But there is also something consoling about it: Here, in the darkness under the starry Swiss sky, we realise once again how precious and beautiful life is.

Perfekte Voraussetzungen um den Sternenhimmel in seiner vollen Pracht zu erleben.

Alles ist Mode. Auch Autos: fahrende Laufstege, repräsentativ für ein Jahrzehnt, eine Epoche, ein Lebensgefühl. Viele Fahrzeuge transzendieren den Status als blosses Fortbewegungsmittel, sind längst zum Symbol, zur Stil-Ikone ihrer Zeit geworden. Wenige so sehr wie dieses: Mit Flügeltüren und markanten Linien macht der italienische Designer Giorgio Giugiaro den DeLorean DMC-12 in den frühen Tagen der Achtziger zur Ikone. Auch die Mode geht gern zurück in die Zukunft. Und Kühnheit siegt eh. Der DeLorean ist da ebenso Brücke zwischen gestern, heute und morgen wie die spektakuläre Kombination aus retro-futuristischer Brille (Acne), Body (Wolfort), ausserirdischem Gürtel und umwerfenden, beinlangen Boots (beides Balenciaga). Das Bag von COS wirkt da wie ein Addendum – aber eines mit Ausrufezeichen. Zeichen setzt auch die erfrischende Interpretation eines Aerobic-Looks mit Gucci-Tights und dem hautengem Balenciaga-Top. Fast schon subtil, unaufdringlich im Vergleich. Aber eben nur fast. Die Achtziger sind immer noch die Muse der Unerschrockenen, das Füllhorn der starken Statements. Inszeniert rund um eine Legende wie den DMC12 wird daraus ein Style-Highlight, das Fashion als das zeigt, was sie eigentlich immer sein sollte: Losgelöst von Raum und Zeit. Davon lässt sich die Fotografen-Taskforce he&me bei ihrem aufsehenerregenden Shoot inspirieren. Gehüllt in tiefes Schwarz und geheimnisvolles Neonlicht, öffnen sie die Flügeltüren des DeLorean, erhellen mit seinen Scheinwerfern die Welt und positionieren Model Valeria Lakhina selbstbewusst, kontrolliert, willensstark.
