Sun sets on Matisse Beach Club

carborough’s Matisse Beach Club will be closing its doors for good, according to a recent announcement. Matisse is one of numerous businesses to be affected by the heavy construction taking place along Scarborough beachfront as the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority carries out a major $100 million redevelopment scheme. As stated on Matisse’s website and social media: “From Monday July 3 there will be significant disruptions to our business with the entire closure of The Esplanade in front of Matisse as the MRA continues to redevelop the area. “Heavy construction will be taking place as a new road

and pavement is being built; the esplanade area is planned to remain closed until the end of September. It is not viable for us to trade during this disruption.” According to the MRA, the Scarborough Master Plan outlines an exciting new vision for Scarborough and includes a range of foreshore improvements to create a contemporary, family-friendly, all-seasons destination, as well as a vision for facilitating private

However, the lengthy redevelopments have resulted in significant losses to the local businesses - including Matisse Beach Club, which went on to announce its permanent closure. In the meantime, those remaining cafes and businesses are calling for the public to support them during such difficult trading conditions.

HOUSING HAVEN

ew affordable housing developments, built in the heart of Rockingham are providing a haven for local residents. The Haven On The Park development consists of 32 properties – 28 apartments for seniors, families and couples on the social housing waiting list, as well as apartments for sale on the open market. This $9.3 million project, driven by community housing leader Access Housing, has been underway since 2015 and was officially opened by Housing Minister Peter Tinley in July.

“Haven On The Park is one of many exciting housing developments. It’s a great example of government and the community housing sector collaborating to deliver muchneeded social and affordable housing where it’s needed,” said Mr Tinley. Access Housing provides tenancy management services for the properties that they own and lease within Haven On The Park. It provides support services to assist social housing tenants sustain their tenancies. “Haven On The Park will improve the lives of prospective

tenants and drive positive social outcomes for the Rockingham community,” said Mr Tinley With the development consisting of 28 apartments and Haven Mews Townhouses being a group of four, three commercial premises remain to offer opportunities for business owners and provide additional jobs in the community. The Department of Communities (formerly the Housing Authority) retains four of the properties for public housing to support community members in need. “By working in partnership with community housing providers such as Access Housing, the McGowan Government will continue to provide new housing opportunities for those on lowto-moderate incomes,” said Mr Tinley.

Golden days preserved

remantle’s West End has been permanently included in the State Register of Heritage Places to preserve its gold boom era buildings and maritime heritage. The precinct is said to embody the exuberance of the gold boom era when thriving as a port town and maintaining this for future generations will boost

tourism and create local jobs. The West End precinct is bounded by Market Street to the east, Collie Street and Marine Terrace to the south, and Little High Street to the west and includes both sides of Phillimore Street to the north. In total, the area includes 250 buildings and a space of 200,000sqm.

Heritage Minister David Templeman said: “The permanent inclusion of West End in the state register recognises the important story the precinct tells as a whole, and it will now benefit from the full protection of the law in perpetuity.” However, the listing does not explicitly prevent the area from being altered or developed. Changes can still be made as long as they maintain the integrity of the heritage site. Private owners are eligible to apply for a Heritage Council grant of up to $100,000 to help with

conservation works in the area. “Since the interim registration late last year, it is clear that being state registered does not impose a greater level of bureaucracy on development proposals. It simply means development needs to be sensitive to the heritage values of the precinct,” said Mr Templeman. “State heritage-listing will enhance the precinct’s appeal as a tourism destination, where visitors can immerse themselves in the sights and experiences of this historic area and contribute to its revitalisation.”

Retail precinct revamped

he Underground at Allendale Square, Mirvac’s newly refurbished Perth CBD retail precinct, was officially opened on in July with a glamorous launch event. The refurbishment includes two spacious glass retail spaces erected along St Georges Terrace, with Perth’s iconic Mary Street Bakery taking this prime position for the location of their new café. New shops opening for the first time in Perth at Allendale Square include Soul Origin and Crafty Cuts, to commence trading later this year. Other new retailers opening in the 2,250sqm underground precinct include Authentic Bites Dumpling House, Mo Espresso, Social 77, Lee’s Kitchen, Freshii, Arirang, Chicken Rice Corner, Happy Nails, Timeless Beauty and Fabric Spa. Old favourites have also returned to the space including Lalla Rookh Bar and Eating House, Bellini Barber, Lunches Down Under and Zensaki.

Mirvac’s Group Executive of Office MPT Andrew Butler said: “The completion of the refurbishment at Allendale Square is a significant milestone, which showcases our commitment to Perth to provide an exceptional working environment and office precinct for tenants and the community now and into the future.” The entrance to the office building has been upgraded with a dramatic glass canopy designed by award-winning local architect, Christou Design Group. These deeper colours can also be balanced perfectly when paired with lighter schemes. With tactility being a key element in the winter palette, balancing textures and layering accessories will create a perfect scheme and add another dimension to the space. “Concrete is a multipurpose material that is no longer reserved just for floors or the outdoors,” says Andrea. Adding a Concrete Effect with its cool hue balances out warmer textiles while hints of Copper Effect can create a harmonious and welcoming space. “Incorporating textured surfaces such as Copper Effect adds further dimension and creates focal points in a predominantly minimalist colour space. This touch of copper is ideal for highlighting architectural details and can also be applied to home accessories,” says Andrea.

ounder and CEO, Peter Peard and his team at the Peard Real Estate Group have been helping Perth locals buy, sell, rent and lease property since opening their first office at the Hillarys Marina back in 1997. The company started out with a small office of three, driven by one man’s vision to change the real estate game. From the very start, Peter wanted to offer both clients and agents something better. Today, the company manages over 3,200 investment properties and sells $1.2 billion dollars’ worth of property a year with their 300-strong team. Peter’s decision to open Peard Real Estate came after 10 years in the industry, which saw him grow tired of looking at the

same real estate business model. “I would watch principles run offices that were barely turning over a profit and walk away with nothing to show after 30 years of blood, sweat and tears,” he says from the group’s HQ in Subiaco. “At the other end, agents within those offices weren’t happy. ow many times have you presented to an audience who have sat through your presentation scrolling through their iPhone, bored out of their brain, completely disengaged? Most of us, especially managers, are time poor. So we dig up old presentations and update dates and numbers, rather than taking a step back and thinking about what we are trying to achieve at the end of the presentation. The result? Presentation slides that are

text-heavy, dense, confusing, distracting and misleading. Our most important and urgent messages stay trapped; hidden behind seriously bad-designed slides and long complex paragraphs of information. These messages could have made a difference in the world – secured buy-in from your team on a new vision or built awareness around a new product – but they go unheard, unseen, and not understood.

Finding time to research, write, design and rehearse is a constant challenge. But you must invest the time and energy into planning a powerful presentation if you want your audience to invest their time and energy in you. Here’s how. IDENTIFY YOUR OBJECTIVE Are you trying to educate your audience, sell them an idea or communicate the latest results or strategy? It is incredible how many

remembered. So when it comes content, it’s vital to have clarity around your main message, a soundbite that gets repeated again and again. Ask yourself: What is the one thing you want your audience to remember when the lights go down? Think of it as a bumper sticker message that you repeat throughout the presentation to ensure your audience remembers why they are there and what the key take-home message is. CONNECT THROUGH EMOTION There is no more B2B or B2C in today’s communication landscape. All this has done is create unnatural, overcomplicated messages and solutions. What the world needs today, what your customers, clients and stakeholders are crying out for is H2H – from human to human, a natural connection through compelling visuals and emotional stories. Our decisions – whether we buy or buy-in to something – are influenced by our emotions. So make your audience feel something. Use images to create sadness, excitement, inspiration or even anger if it’s appropriate to your cause. Use visuals to support your words Your slides are there to support what you are saying as a speaker – they are not a teleprompt. Your visuals are aids to help your audience understand what you are saying. Use icons to summarise main points and

presenters can not clearly articulate their reason for presenting – what they want their audience to do or feel after watching their presentation. When you have a clear objective then you can measure the success of your presentation. Why are you there and, just as importantly, what’s in it for your audience?

This is how you make the material useful, easy to read and understand, as well as providing clear actionable insights that add value and impact for shareholders and stakeholders. CUT THE CR@P What gets left out of your presentation is more important than what goes in. Cut out all the clutter from your presentation to present clear and consistent messages. Some companies are clearly better than others at this. Many believe that sharing everything and blinding their audience with numbers, bullet points and information is the best way to be transparent and open – that couldn’t be further from the truth. This will only put the people you are trying to engage off, and make them lose interest faster. PREPARE TO PRESENT Preparing a presentation also involves preparing to present it. Practice your presentation out loud, not just in your head. This will give you an accurate idea of timing. Let your personality and passion shine, give the audience more than a report. Don’t try and memorise the script. Be prepared to deliver on the spot with no speaker notes, just a clear consistent message and idea of what you want your audience to do at the end. PL

hen taking on a residential tenancy, typically the owner requires the tenant to pay a security bond upfront which equates to about four weeks rent. The purpose of the bond is to provide the owner with an opportunity to mitigate any losses, should they be incurred by the tenant. These losses may include damage to the property (inside and out) or the non-payment of rent. THE GOVERNMENT BOND ADMINISTRATOR The bond is not kept by the owner or managing agent, instead it is paid to the Government Bond Administrator, which is a specific Government managed trust account. Landlords and property managers who fail to comply with this provision, and pay the bond into the Government managed trust, face severe penalties. A recent example of this resulted in the owner of selfmanaged rental properties being fined $24,000 for the misuse of bond monies.

GETTING YOUR BOND MONEY BACK Typically, tenants receive their bond money back at the end of the tenancy, once the managing agent has inspected the property to ensure it is in the same condition as at the commencement of the lease (taking into account fair wear and tear). The state of the property is checked against the Property Condition Report (PCR) - a mandatory document required to be completed at the start of a new tenancy. The completed PCR is agreed to and signed by the landlord (or the managing agent on their behalf) and tenant at the commencement of the lease. BOND DISPUTES Sometimes, an outgoing tenant’s view of what constitutes ‘fair’ depreciation differs to that of the owner’s, which can lead to a disagreement over how the bond is disbursed. If a bond inspection reveals the tenant failed to, for example, clean the oven or mow the grass, the tenant should be given the opportunity to correct this. Sometimes, the tenant will leave these smaller tasks to the owner and give permission for the costs of

rectifying them to be deducted from their bond. Occasionally however, an agreement cannot be reached and the manner in which the bond is disbursed remains in dispute. In these situations, the PCR is relied upon to determine whether, for example, the carpet was stained during the term of the tenancy. It may have been stained prior, but if not noted in the PCR, it is difficult for the tenant to disprove responsibility. In the event of an unresolved dispute, the courts will ultimately decide the allocation of bond monies. It is important tenants ensure the PCR is accurate at the commencement of the lease. Make sure you agree with each item listed in the PCR and bring any items you think may have been overlooked to the attention of your property manager. If you make every effort to return the property to the owner in the best possible manner at the end of the tenancy, you are in a good position to have your bond refunded in full. Expect to be able to see a spectacle of colours rolling down into the heart of the Avon Valley when great big hot air balloons begin their descent upon Northam for the National Ballooning Championships – it really will be an impressive sight to behold. Over the course of five days, 30 balloons will be floating over the hills and through the valleys. Keep a keen eye out at dawn and then again in the afternoon if you want to catch them. Or, if you’re not a morning bird, the Balloon Glow will take place at night for another pretty sight when all the balloons will be fired up on the ground for a special display. Finally, the event will finish off with a ‘key grab’ comp. FRESH APPLE FOR THE HOME HomePod is proof that the Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. In this case, that tree is Apple’s ubiquitous Apple Music database, that repository in the cloud somewhere with more than 40 million songs available for download - if you have a subscription of course. Now Apple wants to bring a new dimension to Apple Music, launching the squat but very-clever HomePod wireless speaker. The 18cm tall HomePod packs some mind-numbingly clever tech stuff into a compact package - an upward facing woofer for distortion-free bass; no fewer than seven “beam-forming” tweeters (each with its own amplifier) to channel the sound and six in-built microphones so you can talk - yes, talk - to the HomePod via Siri. HomePod can even sense, says Apple, exactly where it is placed in a room (corner, table, bookshelf etc) and then figure out the optimum playback experience. It won’t, of course, account for personal taste, so if you’re streaming a Justin Bieber track you are on your own . . . HASSELBLAD BRILLIANCE It says something when your camera equipment is chosen to record possibly the most momentous occasion in mankind’s history - the journey to, and landing on, the Moon. PULP FIXATION In the 1930s and 40s ‘Pulp Fiction’ ruled the newsstands; and the more lurid, sensual or shocking the cover, the better; after all, competition to get readers’ attention was fierce with thousands of titles available. Now, thanks to British artist Mike Fyles and the creative crew at UK-based gift company CUBIC, that sense of pulp cool lives again. CUBIC commissioned Mike to create covers for six ‘makebelieve’ pulp titles, the illustrations being used on a range of groovy products such as tea towels, book ‘tins’ (you can stack ‘em on your bookshelf as a secret repository for keys and the like) and notebooks. “I’ve worked with Marvel, and a small number of press publishers in America, mainly producing cover art for what has become known there as New Pulp - a new generation of writers reviving and reframing old pulp characters who are now public domain,” says Mike. “This work was a departure of sorts, where the artwork - with the exception of the notebooks, would be on other types of products. THE LEGEND FROM BRUCE ROCK GLEN FOREMAN, FFPress, $34.99 Shockwaves rippled across Perth on November 2, 2006, when respected sports journalist and administrator Wally Foreman died from a heart attack, aged just 58. And of course none felt his passing more than his family - wife Lyn and sons Glen and Mark. Wally's skills lay not just in analysing or commenting on sport, which he did with aplomb for the ABC and Channel 9 after beginning his media career at The West Australian newspaper; Wally, who hailed from Bruce Rock, was an “everyman’s” man who treated others with respect, be they kings or cleaners. His people skills (and sports knowledge of course) were instrumental in him being selected as the inaugural director of the WA Institute of Sport, a position he held for 17 years before returning to the media. Thousands attended his memorial service at Challenge Stadium; many more tuned in on live radio. But, of course, the

pain and loss was most raw for the Foreman family. Now, son Glen, who followed in Wally’s footsteps into sports journalism before moving into a role at the WACA, has released an entertaining, and poignant, biography about his dad. “It’s taken me six years,” says Glen who realised during writing the book that he needed a unique angle to the tale. “I found I was writing it like a feature article and it was missing something. Then I read an amazing bio of Johnny Cash, by the LA Times’ music critic Robert Hilburn. I reached out to Robert and he actually got back to me; but he wouldn’t read what I had written; he said I had to find my own voice and just start writing.” And with the birth of his daughter, Charlotte, Glen found the catalyst to write from the heart - the book is written to her, the grandfather she never met but whose impact on WA’s sporting and media landscape still resonates today. FROM LILLIPUT TO LORD’S GREG YOUNG, SilverWood Books, $22 As I write this, Cricket Australia and its leading players are involved in a bitter stoush over (aren’t they all?) money. But turn the clock back and cricket was a different, and certainly far less lucrative, beast. For Perth lawyer-cum-author Greg Young the exploits of the West Indies’ cricketers of the 1950s and 1960s hold special memories - so much so that it’s led him to pen a quirky, fascinating look at why one little Caribbean island produced so many cricketing superstars. “My dad played WACA A grade in the early 1960s; he loved the game and had quite a few cricket books. When I was about 13 he gave me a book he’d been given by his grandfather about the famous 1963 Test between England and the West Indies. I was hooked by the photographs and the descriptions of the attacking West Indies’ style. "I began to read more about the great Windies teams of the 50s and 60s and learned that the most dominant West Indies batsmen of the era - Everton Weeks, Frank Worrell and Clyde Walcott (the Three W’s), Garry Sobers and Conrad Hunt - were all born within a few miles of each other on the tiny island of Barbados. And they were all knighted for services to cricket. I found that all pretty fascinating and From Lilliput to Lord’s grew out of that,’’ says Greg. The eye-catching cover really nails the Caribbean vibe too and therein lies another story. “I had been searching the net for artwork that spoke to what I described in the book - free flowing, bright and attractive cricket. I was originally going to use something abstract, like those great Verve Records album covers of the 1960s. But then I thought it would be nice to use

the work of a Bajan (from Barbados) - I came across Neville Legall’s artwork, which was perfect. A big crowd gathers, along with WA Governor Sir Gerard Smith, to officially farewell adventurer and former Goldfields prospector Arthur Richardson. His mission: to become the first person to cycle around the continent; that’s an 18,507km journey facing brutally difficult conditions (searing heat, bitter cold, sandstorms) but also some fierce rivals from the east determined to do beat him to it. Thousands of kilometres away on the East Coast, brothers Frank and Alex White, and pastoralist Donald Mackay, also dream of completing the journey - but in a counterclockwise direction. The wiry Richardson, who’d sought his fortune in the Goldfields, had already notched up some formidable cycling achievements, conquering the Nullarbor Plain, a fiercely difficult ride over 2,100km of sandy tracks, in temperatures north of 50C. But, after 31 days of bone-jarring pedalling, he had successfully reached Adelaide. In Tour de Oz, leading sports journalist Bret Harris weaves a thoroughly fascinating tale that screams TV mini-series to me. Did Arthur make it? Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out. 50 YEARS OF ROLLING STONE EDITED BY JANN WENNER, Abrams, $90 You could probably split rock music into two main eras - BRS (Before Rolling Stone) and ARS (not a great acronym I admit) - such was the impact the magazine, founded in New York in 1967 by Jann Wenner, had on cementing rock as a serious cultural art form. The morphing of rock ‘n’ roll into rock, and then into the multi-trillion dollar business it is today, is due in no small part to Rolling Stone’s influence, and this handsome book (sorted decade-by-decade) is packed with some of the magazine’s great interviews, and images, from the past five decades. With insights into Dylan, Cobain, Jagger and Springsteen, and many more of rock’s luminaries, plus some amazing images by the likes of Annie Liebovitz, this is a must for any pop culture fan.

THE FORCE, DON WINSLOW, HarperCollins Aust., $32.99 Californian writer Don Winslow struck a nerve when he got death threats - and complements - from some of the most ruthless individuals in the criminal world after his searing thrillers The Power of the Dog and The Cartel were published. The threats and praise came from the same source - members of Mexico’s notorious drug cartels; some were not happy at the way Winslow’s ‘fictional-butbased-on-fact’ characters were portrayed; but others were thrilled at the notoriety;

after all, ego plays a big part when you’re running a billion-dollar drug empire. For The Force Winslow has temporarily put the third book in his ‘drug war’ trilogy on hold, turning his focus on police corruption. The story of the not-so-clean NYPD Det. Sgt Denny Malone, caught between a rock and a hard place with the Feds breathing down his neck, has already garnered rave reviews. Winslow digs into the NYPD’s unsavoury side but he is no cop hater; he dedicates The Force preface to officers killed in the line of duty, a sobering list of names covering two and half pages.

CARS IN CUBA YOU SHOULD SEE BEFORE THEY DIE KIM BUDDEE, New Holland Publishers, $45 As the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention and there’s no greater evidence of this than on the island of Cuba. Prior to its Communist revolution in 1959, Cuba was shaping up as a tropical extension of the American dream; well, at least that of hustlers and mobsters, looking to control the lucrative casino business. Big, flashy Yank Tanks ruled the streets - and then Fidel Castro and co came along to spoil the party. The island fell under Communist rule, the US slapped trade embargoes on the islands, which meant no new parts for all those cars; in fact, no new cars either. So for decades Cubans found a way to keep those relics rolling; Cuba’s resolve was put to even greater test when the Soviet Union disintegrated in the early 90s and the island was well and truly on its own. And from this automotive time warp springs Kim Buddee’s rather fabulous, and pithily named book, Cars in Cuba You

Should See Before They Die. “Every trip in a car in Cuba is a car buff ’s dream,” says Kim, who seized on the chance to visit the island when then President Obama began to re-engage with Cuba (moves now reversed by President Trump). “I came upon well-known brands such as Ford and Chevrolet and discovered forgotten marques including DeSoto, Studebaker and Nash. As a baby boomer these zombies from the 1940s and 50s piqued childhood memories, especially as our family car in WA was a green 1953 Ford Customline and my own first car was an FJ Holden,” says Kim, who’s already thinking about another trip down automobile memory lane. “If I were to make another book on cars it would be to scour the country of Outback Australia for those crusty, rusty, hulks sitting overgrown in paddocks and dusty shearing sheds. Or a return to Cuba; there are still 60,000 of these beauties roaming the island.”

MARVEL’S THE DEFENDERS Netflix, from August 18 There’s a simple reason why Batman’s cooler than Superman, why Ironman’s cooler than Captain America and why Deadpool is cooler than, well, everyone: No one likes a goody two shoes. Yes, a true good guy’s manners may be impeccable, their souls pure, their moral compass stuck rigidly at ‘do the right thing’, but nowadays most of us want our superheroes to have an edge, a bit of the bad boy about them, a bit of drama. Raise a sneering, sarcastic cheer then for the arrival of the ultimate team-up of angst-ridden uberhumans in Marvel’s The Defenders, a mouth-wateringly dark depiction of four of the moodiest malcontents ever to grace the comicbook universe. There’s Daredevil, the brilliant attorney blinded in a freak childhood accident, who prosecutes scumbags by day and metes out brutal vigilante justice at night. Next up’s Jessica Jones, a super-clever superhero so cool she doesn’t even need a special name. She was at school with Spider-Man himself and, like all the best tortured heroes, watched her parents die at an early age. Luke Cage, too, doesn’t go in for capes and dramatic noms des plume, instead just tries to keep his head down while he battles his own personal demons – hard to do when you’re super strong with skin a bullet can’t pierce. And then there’s Iron Fist, who dealt with the death of his parents in a plane crash when he was 10 years old by training to be the ultimate warrior monk. Like you do.

DIANA: TRAGEDY OR TREASON TLC, August 28 As much as it pains me to admit it, I’m not far off my 50th year on this planet – and

feared to be the next target. I was at my desk in Bristol when the tsunami struck that Boxing Day, as I was when the bomb went off in Bali, and I was here in Perth when more innocents died in Norway, Mumbai and Manchester. But the one that I remember most vividly has to be the death of Diana, Princess of Wales. I had a hangover and was eating Coco Pops, watching the news on a sunny morning in Scotland. I watched the reports for maybe ten minutes before it sank iN just what had happened, but when I did, I dressed and drove unbidden to the office of the Greenock Telegraph, as did each and every other journalist on the paper. Shocked, we brought out the paper’s first ever Sunday edition. It was, of course, one of the great news events of my generation and, like the babyboomers who can always remember where they were when JFK died, people of my age can always put a pin in August 31, 1997. Any look back at the events of that night in Paris, then, draws us in, so as the 20th anniversary looms there’s going to be a fair bit of reminiscing. Over three nights, Diana: Tragedy or Treason delves into the conspiracy theories that have raised their heads in last two decades as well as her legacy and the effect her death has had on the world, talking to the likes of her biographer Andrew Morton and bodyguard Ken Wharfe as well as crash investigators,

I’ve spent more than half of them as a journalist. And like most every other journalist I know, I can recount my career by where I was when the big stories broke. On 9/11, I was in London in the tower in Canary Wharf that was, for a brief time at least,

friends and employees. Whether it answers any questions is debatable, but TLC, part of the Discovery stable, can generally be relied on to keep journalism first and sensationalism second. Watch if you love: The drama of real life, leaving no stone unturned.

JOHN EALES REVEALS THE HAKA Discovery Channel, August 20 Speaking of memorable moments, one that went down in sporting history for all the wrong reasons was during the Wallabies’ clash with the All Blacks in Wellington back in 1996. It was, of course, the day Australia’s captain, John Eales, decided that he and his team mates weren’t going to face their New Zealand counterparts when they performed their traditional, pre-match haka. Normally, the guys in the green and gold would stare down their All Black counterparts as they performed the traditional Maori ceremony, but, in an ill-thought out act of defiance, this time they just carried on their warmups at the other end of the pitch as though nothing was going on. Natural justice kicked in and the Wallabies were thrashed 43-6, but more repercussions were to come – outrage poured from both sides of the ditch and the moment of madness cast a blight on Eales’ otherwise illustrious career. He has, of course, since accepted his mistake and apologised unreservedly, admitting in 2003: “I was ashamed . . . how little respect was shown to very rich tradition of the game. I’m still embarrassed by it.” Now, Eales takes things even further by reaching out to All Black legend Wayne ‘Buck’ Shelford to help him learn more about this pivotal part of New Zealand’s culture and identity. Together they crisscross the two islands, visiting Maori communities in Rotorua, Eden Park and Auckland as Eales walks his own personal road to redemption. It should be a fascinating insight into a historic culture. Watch if you love: Every moment of every Wallabies/All Black clash, the power that comes from a great man admitting he was wrong. f ever proof were needed that angels walk among us, the leading ladies at WA’s Kids Cancer Support Group provide all the evidence needed. Cassie Lovering and Donna Field – KCSG’s president and vice-president, respectively – work with a handful of dedicated committee members to support families who have children with cancer and other blood disorders. Their devotion to the cause comes from a place of deep empathy, due to their personal experience with the disease. “My son Harvey was diagnosed with

a brain tumour in 2011,” Cassie explains. “He was 17 months old. We were on Ward 3B at PMH and once a week a lady called Sue would bring morning tea to the family room. Sue was the president of KCSG and had been with the group for 23 years. “Sadly, Harvey passed away in 2013,” Cassie continues. “At the end of 2013, Sue was looking at passing on the hat, and I put my hand up, taking over in early 2014.” For Cassie, taking over KCSG was part of the healing process. “It’s a little bit like Stockholm Syndrome,” she explains. “When

your child is first diagnosed, Ward 3B is an awful, horrible place and you don’t want to be there. “Slowly, you start trusting everyone who’s there, because they only have the best interests of your child at heart. The nurses aren’t friends, because they can’t be friends, but they’re the people that you rely on, as well as the doctors and all the other parents. “I wasn’t quite ready to leave Ward 3B when Harvey passed away, but slowly, as time goes by, it gets harder to go back.” At around the time that Cassie put her

hand up for the KCSG presidency, she encountered Donna, who she immediately identified as a 3B kindred spirit. “My son Jackson was diagnosed with leukaemia at the age of three-and-a-half, five days after my 40th birthday,” Donna recalls. “Jackson was having chemo one day and Cassie just came and introduced herself, and asked me if I’d be interested in being involved in KCSG. “Initially – because I was so caught up with Jackson in intensive treatment – I said to her that once he got on to maintenance I’d

have a think about it, and a short time later, Kids Cancer Support Group 2.0 was born.” At the time Cassie and Donna took over in late 2014, KCSG had been operating – in one form or another – for more than three decades. The Life Family Support Group of Children with Cancer and Leukaemia, established in 1983, was the original parentrun support group for Ward 3B at PMH. The group was a non-profit organisation and registered charity supporting children with cancer and their families. It aimed to provide support to families through ongoing education, social events, and the purchase of play equipment and medical equipment for the ward. “When I took over, I could see the potential for the charity and what it could

support families as they adjust to their “new normal”. “We talk about life BC and AC – our life before cancer, and the life that we create after our old life is destroyed. “In the first six to 12 months of Jackson’s treatment, I’d never heard of the Kids Cancer Support Group, and it was awful to go through that journey alone,” she says. “Ward 3B – the doctors and the nurses and the other families – became my support network. They were the only ones who understood what that journey was like. “It was really important for me that other families didn’t feel so alone – and I guess that’s what Kids Cancer Support Group is really trying to do: connect, support and enrich. We connect families,

It can even be too confronting for their own families.” KCSG is – above all – a support network; a safe place, according to Cassie. “You can share a feeling or emotion throughout the journey, and another mum will say, ‘Oh my god, I thought I was the only one,” no, you’re not. “Sharing those feelings gives validation to the feelings of everyone.You’re not going crazy.You’re just living on pure adrenaline.” To this end, KCSG has a few strings to its bow: in general, it aims to improve the quality of life of children diagnosed

do,” Cassie says. “Morning tea once a week was all well and good, but I knew we could do more.” Having been through cancer with their own children, Cassie and Donna knew intrinsically what was needed from the registered charity. “Our unspoken tagline is: we get it,” Cassie says. “We can help you and support you as your kid goes through treatment.” According to Donna, KCSG exists to

providing them with support and enriching their lives in any way we can now, while we’re in the trenches.” The loneliness of the cancer journey is one that Cassie and Donna refer to regularly, and drives their determination to build KCSG. “When your child is diagnosed, your friends are there to support you, of course, but it’s too hard for them to understand that you have a child who might possibly pass

with cancer, leukaemia or blood disorders and their families. It also aims to improve conditions, treatment facilities and the quality of care available; provide information; provide social activities for families; address the issue of siblings; and support the parents and grandparents. “KCSG is about filling the gaps,” Cassie says. “The hospital can support the families, but there are a countless gaps that need to be filled.”

A KCSG activity particularly close to Donna’s heart is the weekend mum’s restorative retreat, held twice-yearly in the Swan Valley. With the help of psychologists, life coaches and social workers, the retreat provides mums with strategies to deal with stress and anxiety. It also offers restorative yoga, meditation, sound therapy, art therapy and various workshops. “This was the first project I worked on,” Donna explains. “It meant a lot to me, because I’d gone from being quite a sociable person to suddenly having no social life or outlet, and no peers who could relate to what I was going through. “I was a working, career mum with a great group of friends and a social life, and then Jackson was diagnosed and everything changed. “I just felt so isolated and alone, wanting to reach out to find someone who understood me and what I was going through. “Finally, another 3B mother and I were talking and decided that if a break was what the mums needed, we should organise it, because we needed it just as much.That was the beginning of the mum’s restorative retreat.” According to Donna, the weekend retreats usually begin with nerves and anxiety and people pulling out. “We promote the fact that you can come along and be in a safe environment with people who understand. There’s no expectation. “Our motto is: together we are stronger. We hold each other up; we’re there for each other. I didn’t feel alone after our first retreat. It helped me feel connected to other people who understood how hard this journey is.” “'Alone’ is a word that we hear a lot,” Cassie continues. “You could have all the support in the world, but it’s a lonely, lonely place unless people get it. “We make it clear that you don’t have to participate on the retreats. If you want to spend the weekend in bed because you don’t get that opportunity at home, do it. “All those barriers and walls that you put up to protect yourself, you can let them down for one weekend, and just feel free.” The dads also receive support through KCSG, in the form of dedicated Dads' Days. “It’s an opportunity for them to bond. It’s stereotypical, but they’re not as likely to open up and cry – they’d rather bond over a common interest, like fishing, go-kart racing or paintballing. Together, they’re starting to break down the barriers.” Donna and Cassie also realise the importance of supporting siblings through the cancer journey. Cassie has seen firsthand how children are impacted when their

brother or sister are diagnosed, and knows the devastation caused. “My parents took over the parenting role of my two older children for the six months while Harvey was in treatment. It was just easier for them to stay with my parents, because my husband still had to work. “We have to try and include the siblings. If it’s the baby of the family who’s sick, as Harvey was, the older siblings want to help their baby brother. That’s why we hold holiday programmes and movie nights, as a chance for the whole family to come together.” Donna adds: “We turn the ward’s waiting room into a movie theatre, and we have pizza and treats for the kids. Saturday night on the ward is not too much fun, and it encourages brothers and sisters to be involved.” As well as family activities, KCSG also provides Gladiator Goodies – toys and activities delivered to children on Ward 3B.

For the first time in the charity’s history, KCSG recently moved to its own premises in West Leederville. Donna and Cassie refer to the property as the KCSG “house”, and want it to be a base for the charity to offer even more services. “This is where we’ll fill in the gaps,” Cassie explains. “We can hold information sessions and workshops, covering everything from managing relationships to PTSD, which pretty much everyone has suffered.” Donna adds: “This house is going to help us expand and grow and build on those programmes and services. We want KCSG to go on forever. There are more than 100 newly diagnosed families with cancer in WA each year. “Some families, when their child passes away or finishes treatment, they’re happy to walk out of that door and live their life. For the majority, once cancer is there, it’s there. There’s life before, and life after; BC and AC. Some days you feel somewhat normal, but other days it still takes your breath away.” By sharing their personal experiences of having a child diagnosed with cancer, Cassie and Donna continue to raise awareness of the impact childhood cancer has on the whole family. Together, along with a passionate committee, they hope to further enhance the way these families are connected, supported and enriched by the Kids Cancer Support Group. “The Gladiator Goodies are for siblings and friends as well – it’s about supporting and acknowledging the entire network.” One of KCSG’s most poignant acts is its donation of funds to bereaved families. “We contribute to the funerals of children who pass away,” Cassie says. “If a family wants a thousand dollars’ worth of balloons at their child’s funeral, then they can do that. If it helps them do one thing that they couldn’t do because it wasn’t part of their budget, then that’s great.” Like most charities, KCSG relies on donations to keep operating. It’s a situation that Cassie says can be tricky, as – understandably – the majority of people want to donate money towards finding a cure for cancer. “People do like to donate to research because they want to feel like they’re helping to find the cure, but that misses the people who are here now,” Cassie says. Donna adds: “The cure is too late for us; we’re here, we’re living it.”

TEMPTING SPREAD The delicious collection of Poach Pear deli goodies is widely available and their packaging has drawn many plaudits recently.

“I’m a big believer in tradition,” says Adam, who comes from a long line of UK farmers. “I try as much as possible to do things that are quite traditional and to stay authentic to what we are as a business but also to the food. So when it comes down to new products, I’ll try and do a couple that are quite traditional; like the pork and prune and the farmhouse terrines, then we just put our own little twist on it.” The duck and pistachio terrine is another classic, this time originating from France, Adam tells me. He’s added a generous amount of fresh thyme – picked from his own garden – and a touch of orange, along with the WA pistachios of course. “We’ve got some beautiful pistachios here in WA, so I’m adding them for a bit of colour. Duck meat is quite dark and rich so you want something that’s going to cut through that richness a little bit and pistachios do that really well,” explains Adam. Producing such charcuterie products as these is something of a dying art. Adam, a single-minded chef who’s determined to

carry on his family heritage and keep the passions and traditions behind the craft alive. With a databank full of products that he wants to bring to life, he holds on to old family recipes, dreaming up ways to make them work, somethng he’s managed

to execute perfectly with some of his new delicacies. “With products like the Potted Pig and the Spanish Terrine, I’m just trying to push the boundaries a little bit and see if people will like it.” I for one definitely did.

The Spanish Terrine was easily my favourite. Adam took the robust and punchy flavours of the chorizo, like toasted fennel, aromatic coriander and hot paprika, and combined this with local pork to create a real taste of Spain in terrine form. While the craft of charcuterie as a widely practiced tradition may be dwindling in contrast to past eras, Poach Pear’s own trajectory is soaring. After expanding into Melbourne less than two years ago, they’ve

continued to grow with their products now available in Queensland and South Australia, a testament to the quality of the product and brand. “Melbourne is a really tough food market because there are some amazing food producers based in Melbourne and they are very loyal, like we are loyal here,” says Marissa, the marketing brains behind the brand. “So to grow there, it shows that we have very good representation and that

we have a good product, because if we didn’t it wouldn’t survive.” Something that makes Poach Pear products that extra bit special is that they always maintain a small batch, hand-crafted philosophy, Marissa says. “Charcuterie really is a specialised business and a lot of people think it’s quite easy to do but you have to do it under strict controls and just be really careful with how things are done and we’ve always

maintained that,” says Marissa. “We don’t compromise. We keep it small batch and hand-crafted – we haven’t gone to huge machines or anything like that.” Like any specialist or creator, charcuterie is an art that not all can execute, yet Poach Pear have perfected. When asking Marissa what’s been the key ingredients to the brand’s success, she explains that a good product and moderate but sustained growth have lifted the company to where it is today. “I think we’ve kept it real and we’ve grown in a moderate way, we haven’t tried to be too quick,” says Marissa. “We’ve been quite consistent because Adam is really particular about the product and never compromises.” To give the brand an extra kick still, the couple have managed to stay ahead of trends by introducing new, cutting edge packaging for all Poach Pear products to complement their expansion and reflect the quality of the brand. LACROSSE IS A SPORT THAT’S MORE LIKE A BATTLE – AND THERE ARE THREE FIERCE CONTENDERS FROM WA HEADING TO THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. TORI WILSON REPORTS.

h en I think of lacrosse, the first thing that comes to mind are visions of Mean Girl Regina George fiercely ploughing her way across the field, or Wild Child’s Emma Roberts dancing madly with her pink crosse in the air in an attempt to intimidate the opposition. But according to Rebecca Banyard, one of three selected Western Australians to compete in this year’s lacrosse World Championships, the real thing is much more impressive. Rebecca, 28, comes from a family where the game of lacrosse has always dominated. With both parents being lacrosse fans and players themselves, she was introduced to the game at a young age and it has been her passion ever since. Lucky for her, she’s grown up in Perth, one of three main centres for lacrosse in Australia, along with Melbourne and Adelaide, so has had a greater chance to thrive. “It’s incredibly fun and super fast,” says Rebecca. “Unlike a lot of other sports, you can run with the ball for as long as you like without restrictions. There’s also heaps of control with the ball. With footy you might bomb it and have a big scrappy mess, but lacrosse isn’t like that at all. It’s very precise with pinpoint throws and is a very free and fast flowing sport.” While lacrosse mightn’t be much like soccer or footy, it does have a number of similarities to both basketball and hockey so how do you play? To put it as simply as possible, the team which ends the game with the most goals wins. While the concept is straightforward, the finesse involved is not nearly as easy to execute. To begin with, games are started with a face-off (but let’s not get confused with a Wild Child dance off). As part of the official face-off, one player from each team lays their stick alongside the ball until the whistle is blown, at which point the players

battle to gain possession of the ball and must move fast to encourage a smooth and flowing game. Like basketball, lacrosse involves a manto-man defence, meaning each player on the defence is responsible for one player on the offence. This technique allows players to reclaim the ball from the offence and forcefully intercept passes, which is where the abilities of the defencemen are crucial. Defencemen need to have speed, skill and agility in order to slide in and scoop up the ball.

more of a contact game, but for women you’re not allowed to hit people’s bodies with your stick.” Fortunately, the game doesn’t end in as many injuries as you might think, but, if you were hoping that lacrosse might be a newfound sport for you to vent your pent up frustrations, don’t let the lack of physical contact hold you back. “Women’s is officially non-contact but still quite physical. A bit like basketball where it’s non-contact but there’s some

nudging anyway,” says Rebecca. “But with the men’s game you’re allowed hit people's bodies with your stick so they do wear a lot more protective equipment.” Whether it’s a women’s or a men’s game, Rebecca says they’re equally as tactical and both involve a lot of strategy. Here are a few tips that might start you off with an edge:

NET RESULTS Lacrosse is a thrilling game to watch and play, with the highly skilled players running, passing and catching the ball at high speed.

Learn to cradle: Like dribbling in basketball, cradling is a skill that allows a player to move up and down the field and is a way to get past your defenceman while keeping possession of the ball. To cradle, hold the shaft of the stick just below the head with your dominant hand and use your non-dominant hand to loosely support the end of the shaft (make sure you’re covering the tail to avoid being disarmed). Use your hand closest to the head to tightly

curl the stick toward you and then back in one fluid motion, using the centripetal force to keep the ball in the pocket. Now practice running like this. Learn to pass: Passing is vital to moving the ball between players to avoid being disarmed and to reach the goal. To pass, keep the head close to your ear and flick the wrist of your top hand (closest to the head) while pulling your bottom, non-dominant hand towards you.

Learn to catch: Catching involves skilful hand eye coordination.Your natural reaction might be to snatch at the ball or even to cradle it into the catch – ignore that. What you want to do is, with your stick up by your head, loosen the grip on your top hand and ease the ball into the pocket with a little give; it’s essentially the opposite movement to throwing the ball. A handy tip is to pretend you’re catching an egg. Alright, you’re now all set to join

Rebecca tells me that Australia is very competitive globally and in the top tier for England’s 2017 FIL World Cup, which was hosted in July, so we even have a decent chance at winning (disclosure: the results for the World Cup had yet to be determined when speaking with Rebecca). “Australia is the only team, apart from

the USA, which has won the cup for the women,” says Rebecca. “The USA is a pretty dominant player, with a lot more players compared to Australia, but Australia is still very competitive and winning the cup this year would be awesome.” The World Cup involved 30 different nations so it was no walk in the park to win. Rebecca won’t be stopping postcup either; with the World Games taking

place this month, Rebecca will be heading to Poland to compete against six nations, including the USA. “That’s a stepping stone for trying to get into the Olympics,” says Rebecca. “The International Federation of Lacrosse is pushing to get into the Olympics by making an effort to get more countries involved and by sorting out any necessary rule changes – so it’s all in the works, which is very exciting.” PL

t might come as a surprise to you that lacrosse has a rich history as not simply a sport of leisure, but as a sport of custom, community, and culture. See, lacrosse dates all the way back to the early days of the Native Americans, making it the oldest sport in North America (no wonder Americans know how to play it well). It was originally deeply rooted in the religion of the Native Americans and it was played for a number of cultural reasons, including a way of healing the sick, resolving inter-tribal disputes and as part of festivals. Pre-game, the Native American players would ritually decorate their bodies and their sticks with earthly paints and charcoal in a war-like fashion. Next along the history timeline, in the 1800s, the game spread to the French who naturally polished things up somewhat and added a hint of je ne sais quoi… and so ‘the game’ was granted its name - Lacrosse. The name ‘lacrosse’ is said to have originated from the French term for field hockey, le jeu de la crosse. Lacrosse is known as the fastest sport on two feet. Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport in the USA. The first women’s lacrosse game was played in Scotland in 1890.

ueensland may have the Great Barrier Reef but Western Australia has its own natural wonder, although the name Munda Biddi may not be on everyone’s radar - yet. In the Noongar language, Munda Biddi means “path through the forest”. Over a 10-year period since its inception in the late 1990s, the route has morphed section-by-section into probably the world’s longest continuous off-road cycling trail, a 1,000km journey from Mundaring in the Perth Hills through stunning bush and

forest all the way to Albany. The completed trail officially opened in April 2013 and is managed by the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which operates under the umbrella of the newly named Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (formerly Parks and Wildlife) and which also has generous support from Alcoa and off-road cycling enthusiasts. Winding its way through towering, ancient forests of eucalyptus and unspoilt bush, Munda Biddi attracts around 21,000

riders annually, a fair number of them from overseas (National Geographic and Lonely Planet have both named Munda Biddi as one of the world’s top 10 ‘must-do’ cycling adventures). However the trail’s true potential is yet to be fully realised, something the Munda Biddi Trail Foundation is now seeking to redress. The trail is designed to be enjoyed by all flavours off off-road cycling enthusiasts, from the growing band of “bike packers”, who carry their own tent, to those who get a

adventures kick out of exploring unsealed backroads via “gravel grinding” and even the casual cyclist who just wants to complete one or two sections at a leisurely pace but prefers to stay in more comfortable lodgings in nearby towns. For those comfortable with camping, there are free, purpose-built cycle-friendly campsites every 30-40km along the trail. The campsites have a composting toilet (but bring your own toilet paper), two water tanks (treat before drinking and use sparingly), picnic tables, undercover bike storage and sleeping shelters on platforms for around 25 people One issue has been the reluctance, until recently, of hard-core mountain bikers to take Munda Biddi seriously even though it has some pretty rugged sections. But earlier this year Perth’s Declan von Dietze smashed any notion that Munda Biddi was not challenging enough for the elite mountain biker. Declan, 22, who has competed at the elite level in international mountain biking, rode the entire 1,000km trail in four days, six hours and 39 minutes. Declan was accompanied by a film crew but they weren’t allowed to assist him in any way; he slept for just three hours a night, riding an astonishing 20 hours a day. At the finish, Declan was elated but, says Munda Biddi Foundation chairperson Peter Versluis, “stuffed”. “This was a great achievement which will give the trail huge exposure and it’s a

record that other elite mountain bikers will now have in their sights,” he says. The foundation, too, has plans to really bring Munda Biddi into the spotlight; a fully supported eight-day ride (that is, support vans will carry all your gear; riders just need to worry about their bike) including a travelling tent village for riders is now being planned for September 2018. “We’re hoping to get around 200 participants and there’ll be two sections; one for solo riders, the other for teams of two or four. The teams can split the distances they ride; they just have to have one member on the trail at all times during the event,” says

And the Tales from the Tale section on the Munda Biddi website is proof positive of that; there are stories from Herb Boltong, who tackled it aged 72 years and 10 months, taking nearly five months; German backpacker Annika Traser, who’d already conquered the 2,500km across the Nullarbor, then got to Albany and took on the Munda Biddi; and 14-year-old Sergio Arellano, who tells of his family’s three-day Munda Biddi adventure as one they “will surely never forget”. So what are you waiting for? Get planning and get cracking for a go at one of the world’s great cycling journeys. TACKLING THE TRAIL Thinking of attempting at least one section of the Munda Biddi, or indeed the whole 1,000km? Best place to start is the official website at mundabiddi.org.au The website has section-by-section guides (the trail is ‘split’ into nine sections), details about towns along the way (there are 16), trail facilities such as huts and campsites, a distance calculator between points on the track, what to take and much more. You’ll also need a map (shop.dpaw. wa.gov/maps/tracks-and-trails), and although digital route files are available for download (parks.dpaw.wa.gov.au/ know/downloadable-route-files) reception in some areas may be spotty: besides, a physical map can't fail but an electronic device can. WestCycle also recommends a good, well-stocked first aid kit and emergency locator beacon (these can be hired from the Bibbulmun Track Foundation, bibbulmuntrack.org.au). As Munda Biddi Trail Foundation chairperson Peter Versluis stresses, planning is the key to a successful and safe ride along the route. And if you don’t have a bike, but want to experience Munda Biddi, there are plenty of hire options. t will never catch on, said no-one about beer - ever. Which is just as well, because there’s something of a fresh craft beer revolution, er, brewing, around Western Australia. There are new ventures popping up everywhere it seems; from the chilly depths of the Great Southern, to the rolling green South West farmland, and the balmier climes in suburban Perth and Fremantle. Fremantle’s Sail and Anchor pub and the Matilda Bay brewery pioneered craft beer in the mid 1980s, paving the way for Bootleg, Little Creatures, Nail, Feral Brewing and many, many more. Some were victims of their own success (think Little Creatures), swallowed up by the big boys of the brewing industry (Lion Nathan, itself part of Japanese drinks giant Kirin, bought Little Creatures in 2012 in a $380 million deal), a couple fell by the wayside but most of the second generation are still going strong. And now a fresh wave of WA entrepreneurs is on the scene, promising new and exciting drops that certainly have

this beer lover, for one, salivating. The craft beer industry is much more than just a souped-up version of home brewing; it’s also a focal point for encouraging local, fresh produce on menus and a massive money earner to the economy. Research released last month by the Independent Brewers Association showed WA’s 49 craft breweries were generating almost $100 million annually. Nationally, 380 craft breweries were pumping more than $740 million into the economy. Certainly not small beer in anyone’s language. The great thing about craft beer, too, is it is as much an art form as it is a production process; each brewer can have his or her own signature, even within a generic style (ie lager or pale ale). Hamish Coates, founder of the justlaunched Rocky Ridge Brewing Company, is one of those brewers who’s been thinking right out of the box. Hamish honed his brewing chops at Margaret River’s Cheeky Monkey brewery

and has set out to make Rocky Ridge, based at a 40ha farm just out of Busselton, as self-sustainable as possible; he grows his own hops and barley, collects rainwater via two 250,000-litre tanks and doesn’t rely on grid power. Not the easy way, for sure, but it’s a philosophy dear to Hamish’s heart. “There are only a few breweries around the world taking this approach, notably rogue Ales out of Portland (USA), one in Tasmania

(Two Metre Tall) but none in mainland Australia I’m aware of,” says Hamish. “I started home brewing during my time at uni, followed by a more serious look into the science of brewing, which led me to a job as an assistant brewer at Cheeky Monkey. I then started growing and experimenting with hops and barley at home on the farm, leading to questions about why we didn’t produce fresh ingredients for beer here in WA. This

then brought us to the point where I was frustrated by the lack of knowledge about raw ingredients here, so started to study and learn more, finally leading us to open our own brewery,’’ he says. Aiming to produce 200,000 litres a year, Hamish says being a self-sufficient brewer has posed some challenges. “Consistency in raw product is a pretty major one, followed closely by power management.We are off-grid for our electrical system, relying on a solar and battery system for our production facility.This presents some obstacles, but it is an incredibly important part of our ethos,” he says. Rocky Ridge’s Ironstone Pale Ale, Granite IPA and Quartz Small Ale (the geological theme stems from an ironstone ridge that runs through the Jindong farm property) were, at the time of going to print, only available on tap but Hamish says the brewery plans to have them in cans by September. The Boston Brewing Co, out of Denmark in the Great Southern, is steadily gaining a foothold in the Perth area, now producing seven beers under its distinctive Blue Fairy Wren logo. “Boston Brewing Co. beers use 100% rainwater from our Denmark site, which is a huge advantage to have clean, pristine water without fluorides and chemicals. We source some grain and barley where possible from local sources and are working with some local fruit suppliers on some new, upcoming - and secret - releases,” says Boston Brewing’s general manager Glen Daniel. He adds: “I think people have come to appreciate the complex flavour profiles and work involved in creating craft beer and the difference to the conventional pasteurised mainstream beers. The public are also more aware of the craft beers being local businesses and understand the higher costs that accompany quality products that come from craft breweries.” Luckily for us city slickers it’s not just regional WA that’s seeing new tap houses and breweries. In West Leederville, the Nowhereman Brewery aims to be up and running from August 25. “Nowhereman is an extension of my passion for local produce and desire to show you don’t have to look far to find worldclass experiences and products in Western Australia,” says Nowhereman founder Reece Wheadon who has extensive experience in the WA craft brewing industry, including running WA Beer Week for six years. Nowhereman plans to launch with six beers, including Crate Digger Pale.

“The beers are produced by our amazing award-winning brewer Paul Wyman, who came to us from Colonial in Margaret River, after doing great things at The Monk in Freo. Our head chef, Matt Sartori, is equally esteemed, having spent time at Restaurant Amusé, Wildflower and many more of Perth’s favourite dining venues. We’re here to entertain and educate without being preachy, we love good beer and food and want to share that experience with everyone who walks in the door,’’ says Reece. Down in Fremantle - the spiritual heartland of the original craft beer boom - Otherside Brewing is the new kid on the block. Otherside was founded in late 2015 by the team behind music festival organisers Sunset Events, and launched its first brew, the Festive Session Ale, in 2016. That will soon be joined by an Anthem India Pale Ale and Social Classic Lager. Otherside also produces some special brews under its Pilot Series label. Perth’s northern suburbs, too, are set for their own craft beer mecca with Whitfords Brewing Company poised to set up shop at the revamped Whitfords Shopping Centre. It will be similar to - but not an exact copy of - owner Beerland’s other venture, the spiffing Northbridge Brewing Company. With a bunch of delicious brewed-on-site brews, and a planned sky deck with ocean views, the WBC looms as a must-visit. Now I don’t, of course, condone binge

drinking but you owe it to yourselves to sort out that designated driver and plan your own boutique brewery safari; you’ll be tasting some great beers, eating some top food, and helping the local economy at the same time. LOCATION, LOCATION The Richardson is named after the street where it stands, and when you draw up outside, there’s not much to indicate that you're about to enter one of the best hotels in the city. That’s part of its appeal for me; it’s restrained, refined and elegant, a proper aristocrat in Perth’s hotel scene. Designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell, you’ll find luxurious facilities in this boutique hotel, including an indoor heated lap pool, poolside garden, sauna and well-equipped gym. There’s an award-winning restaurant - Opus - with a cocktail bar serving special daily cocktails in a romantic setting as well as an additional conservatory-style dining area and business facilities. More important than all that, however, is the promise of supreme privacy, to the extent that some of the world’s most publicity-shy VIPs book a suite at the Richardson when they’re in town. Think that’s all PR puff? Well, a brief scan of the wall of photographs in the resident’s lounge proves that JLo, Rhianna, Beyonce and Tame Impala have all enjoyed the Richardson’s special brand of ultraprivate service when in town. So even lowly me, as I sign in, is offered the chance to tick a box which promises absolute discretion, with a denial from staff, if required, that I’m staying in the hotel. Fortunately, as it’s just me, my 13-year old daughter and her friend making the most of a day and night in the city, I think Perth’s paparazzi will give that particular scoop a miss.

ROOM VIBES Australian art is a big factor in The Richardson with some extraordinary examples apparent in the foyer and public spaces. The rooms and suites too are adorned with unique works making each space special. Our two-bedroom suite was as gracious and comfortable as you might expect, with a lounge area leading out onto a balcony that took in views down to Subiaco and Domain Stadium in the distance. Kings Park is walkable from the hotel too and, just a short Uber ride away, you’ll find the CBD ready to entertain you with its newly revitalised zest for living. The

girls were thrilled with their large room and ensuite bath, while I had my own bathroom too, with shower and luxury toiletries. There’s a well-stocked kitchen - unusually for a hotel room with a full-sized fridge and freezer (thoughtfully stocked with choc ices), so if you’re in town for a longer stay, you can self-cater as if you were at home. As we were in full girly treats mode, we were particularly pleased to see that all movies - even brand new releases - were available to view free of charge. There were even some bowls of popcorn and freshly made iced tea ready to make our snuggle time special.

TAKE A DIP Before we settled down for the evening, we headed into the city to make the most of some time on the school holiday’s ice rink at Elizabeth Quay. There’s plenty to do in the city these days, from making your own free lollies at Roc Candy to taking the little ferry over to Perth Zoo. Plan ahead

citystay and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll exhaust the kids (and yourself) in time for dinner. Back at the hotel, we decided to take a dip in the indoor heated pool. Although it was a bit chilly to soak up the sun, in the summer the adjacent sun garden would be a perfect place to read a book and enjoy a little oasis of peace and quiet right in the centre of town. We tried to last in the sauna longer than five minutes (failed), took another dip then sloped back upstairs in our fluffy white gowns to get ready for the highlight of our stay - a special high tea in Opus Restaurant. TEA FOR THREE Dressed up as elegantly as any typical 13year old can manage these days, the girls and I took our seats in Opus. We were immediately the focus of the attention of delightful waiters - the staff are a real high point of any stay at The Richardson - who made a fuss of the giggly girls and gave me a glass of Champagne (big tick). The traditional three-tiered collection of sweet and savoury goodies looked like a work of art when it arrived. At the top, three golden-topped scones, still warm, ready to be slathered with Chantilly cream and house-made strawberry jam. Down a level, and we found a trio of creamy raspberry

panacottas in little jars, mini chocolate cheesecakes and light-as-a-feather lemon meringue mini tarts. There were freshly cut rare roast beef and horseradish sandwiches, smoked salmon and cream cheese and, of course, cucumber sandwiches. The kitchen had some fun too with hand-made chocolates and fruity jubes sticking out of a little flowerpot, complete, of course, with chocolate ‘dirt’. Needless to say, we ate it all - apart from a couple of left overs which our waiter kindly packaged up for us to take to our room for a midnight feast. disappointed. Crowning a special 24hour stay off with a chic breakfast (think brioche French toast with stewed fruits and mascarpone, eggs your way and freshly squeezed juice), we departed with more than a backwards glance. ’m pretty sure we’ve all been this girl; you go into a department store thinking you’ll find yourself the perfect foundation, you know the one, it has just the right amount of coverage, so you look put together, but not over done. So you talk to a consultant at a make-up counter, she matches your colours and you think you’ve solved that age old problem. Then you get home . . . Turns out the lights in the department store are fluorescent and the make-up is about three times darker than what you’d normally wear. Disaster, you never wear the make-up and you’ve wasted your hardearned money. Sigh. Enter Perth’s Lip Lab. My mixologist Megan Hoeneveld was a dab hand at finding my perfect shade. She asked me what foundation I normally wore, what kind of coverage I liked, whether sunscreen was important, if there was any pigmentation I needed to cover and what kind of finish I was after. For me, we went for an oil-free medium coverage foundation in ivory and added a mattifier, SPF and some ultra lightening fluid. There’s even a ‘fringe benefit’ you can add which is just like primer except you can basically skip that step because it’s already in your make-up. Genius. “There’s so many benefits to having a customised foundation made just for you,” Megan says. “Often you find the right colour, but it’s not the right coverage and then you find the right coverage but it’s too oily, this process allows you to find the perfect foundation fit and, because we can mix shades together, we can literally find a match for every skin tone. “It’s great for all ages too, if you want a lighter coverage so it doesn’t seep into wrinkles we can help you find it.” Megan (whose own make-up is flawless by the way) says she recommends applying your foundation with a brush and working

BYO has also been a big hit with Perth brides-to-be, even though it only launched in April. “Brides and bridesmaids are really aware of the fact that they want to look amazing in their photographs and we can help them find the perfect shade so they don’t look washed out,” Megan said. “We’ve also had lots of hens' parties come in, they find their perfect foundation

Coffee, and all that jazz

hen I was tipped-off to head to Satchmo in North Perth my first thought was ‘why haven’t I heard of this place before?’ Once I’d walked through its doors (after first driving past and missing it entirely) I could instantly tell that this quaint find had been well-loved for ages - I’m just clearly out of the loop. As it turns out, this unsuspecting little hideaway has been in existence since October of 2015 when owner (and hospitality guru) Nathan Karnovsky opened its doors. Cute little knickknacks abound and, with an old-school décor, this cosy joint exudes a homely feel and seems to shout ‘we love jazz’. With vintage tunes playing round the clock, it’s hard not to get addicted to the good vibes, so to lend the people a helping hand Nathan sells a small collection of blues, soul and jazz vinyls from the corner of the café too. Genius.

If you’re a fan of the genre, the name Satchmo should have already given the theme away. It was the nickname used for iconic jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong, who, impressively, Nathan shares a nostalgic family connection with. His distant relatives took the talented musician in off the streets of New Orleans at a young age, building him up for great things. Just as the family passion for jazz makes up part of Satchmo’s DNA, so does Nathan’s Jewish heritage. The menu features Americana New York classics such as mamma’s matzo ball chicken soup, blintzes (a sweet crepe-like treat filled with ricotta and cinnamon), and a selection of the best bagels you could ask for. This is comfort food at its finest. When heading to the counter to order, I went up with a meal off the main menu in mind; until I got a glimpse of the plump

and shiny bagels winking at me from the display fridge. Game over, I couldn’t resist. I chose the pumpkin, haloumi and kale bagel dusted with poppy seeds. I was tempted by the corned beef with pickles option too (next time). To wash it down I ordered a flat white – which tasted so good that I went back for seconds. When it comes their coffee, Satchmo source their beans from the local Twin Peaks Roasters in Vic Park, which gives them a massive head start when it comes to making the perfect brew. If you know how good Bossman coffee is, the former owner Tom and the roaster at Twin Peaks are one and the same. To raise things up a notch, Nathan and the Satchmo team happen to be good mates with Twin Peaks’ Tom who makes a house blend just for them, so when you sip your coffee it’s a unique, bespoke cuppa. The barista definitely didn’t let the team

down. With skilful latte art, I had an inkling they knew their stuff before even taking the first sip. The flat white had a smooth and balanced hit of espresso and was capped with a thin layer of perfectly creamy micro foam (hint: when the milk is shiny you know it’s good); exactly the way I like it. The slightly smaller cup is most likely what

gave it that extra coffee kick. My pumpkin bagel was equally top notch. Bagels – which, originated out of the Jewish communities of Poland in the 17th century– are typically boiled before being baked, resulting in a dense and chewy inside and a seeded or salted shiny outer crust. Nathan knows this of course; prior to Satchmo he

travelled to New York on a bagel-based mission to learn from the very best how to make this delicious treat the right way. Bringing this method back to Perth, he established The Holy Bagel Co., from which, naturally, Satchmo’s bagels are sourced. So it makes all the more sense that my bagel was basically perfect; and it only left me $11 out of pocket too ($14.50 with the coffee), which is incredibly reasonable. After what turned into two hours, I was a convert. Satchmo is the sweetest and most satisfying café I’ve visited in a long time and I’ll most definitely be back to try that corn beef bagel. I’ll make sure to pop by on a Sunday too between 9.30 and midday to catch another of Satchmo’s quirky qualities; their weekly live jazz gig, set up just out front. Perhaps I’ll choose to sip on a Bloody Mary while I’m at it, and raise a glass to Mr Armstrong and his trumpet. PL August/September 2017 | PRIMOLIFE

MISSY HIGGINS IS HEADING BACK TO ONE OF HER FAVOURITE PLACES IN THE WORLD - BROOME - AND HER SHOWS PROMISE TO BE NOTHING SHORT OF UNFORGETTABLE. BY GABI MILLS.

came to Missy Higgins late - which is to say in this extraordinary artist’s career, I only discovered her in the last five years. I fell in love, like so many others, with her authentic, earthy voice and hearttangling lyrics in top-charting album The Ol’ Razzle Dazzle, released in 2011. Since then I’ve joyfully journeyed back in time, discovering her other work, particularly Oz, a collection of Australian tracks given the Missy Higgins sprinkling of stardust.

Anybody who’s heard her version of The Drones’ Shark Fin Blues will never forget it. Her collection of works to date is remarkable. For somebody so young (the mother of one is still only in her early 30s), Melissa ‘Missy’ Morrison Higgins has achieved more since bursting onto the music scene at 15 than many artists achieve in a lifetime. Born in Melbourne, she played the piano from a young age and by 15 was writing her own music, penning All For Believing just in time to upload it to Triple J’s Unearthed - an opportunity to give unsigned Aussie artists a huge audience via the national radio station. That song won and from then onwards Missy Higgins has taken her place on the world’s radio playlists. The story-telling nature of many of her works makes them perhaps the ideal soundtrack for a balmy night under the stars, and after an orchestral tour with the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra with old

material re-scored, Missy says that her desire to perform with an orchestral backing was ignited. “It just sounded so beautiful in a massive cinematic way,” she said. “I heard my old songs in a completely new way.” The An Evening with Missy Higgins tour was born, and a visit to Broome was a must. “I really wanted to come to WA, it means a lot to me - I’ve spent a lot of time in Broome in the past," she says. “I’ve written so many of my songs in Broome and had the most inspiring moments of my life up there.” In fact she lived in the Kimberley town in 2006, seeking inspiration from the extraordinary landscape, writing Going North before touring the US and South Africa with her new material. She also met her future husband - Dan Lee - in Broome, and the pair welcomed their son Samuel in January 2015. Concert-goers can expect a mix of old

and new material, says Missy Higgins. “When you play piano the songs lend themselves well to an orchestral setting,” she said. “It leaves a lot of space. I’ve just been overseas and have done a lot of writing and collaborating so we’ll see how the new songs go down.” Her passion for performance remains undiminished despite the extra pressures of motherhood, she says. “I still feel like on stage is where I come to life, I’m not a studio head type of performer. I like writing music and playing it live, connecting with an audience. “It’s a little bit harder in an outdoor setting but when it’s purely my show (rather than a festival), it’s easier to make those connections. It can be beautiful on a really different level.” The multi-talented performer pursued a course in Indigenous Studies and scored a role in the award-winning Australian movie Bran Nue Dae in 2009, and acting is something she’d like to try again. Broome, it seems, is never far from her thoughts. “It’s truly one of my favourite places on Earth. I can’t wait to go back, spend some time in the bush, get my feet dirty in the pindan soil, play guitar under a boab tree and have a mango beer! I’m really looking forward to this gig,” she says. Her work is famously autobiographical, charting lost loves, the pain of separation and her journey from teen to first-time mother. “My lyrics have completely changed,” she laughs. “My inspirations are different now - I’m writing about the world and what’s wrong with it. “Becoming a mum really cracked me open and made me much more sensitive. I keep bursting into tears when I watch the news. My priorities have changed - I now see the world as a person who has somebody to protect, that this is the world I’ve brought him into.” Always a passionate advocate of the environment, singing at the Save the Kimberley concert and a strong voice against the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, Missy says these days she keeps returning to the subject of climate change. “My songs have always been very confessional, about past relationships, how I’ve felt about myself. omeo and Juliet would blush as Salma Hayek and Samuel L Jackson redefine romance in comedy action flick, The Hitman’s Bodyguard. Hayek’s Sonia calls him her “cockroach”, sweet-talking him with a string of crude expletives, while Jackson returns her love by breaking out of a maximum security prison to deliver her favourite tulips on their anniversary. But the real passion lies between Ryan Reynolds’ bodyguard Michael Bryce and Jackson’s hitman Darius Kincaid. “I love the bond they share,” says Reynolds when I meet with the unlikely

couple in Beverly Hills. “These two guys couldn’t be more polarised but as we move through the story they start to acquire begrudging love and respect for each other. There’s a bromance and several love stories all wrapped up in this incredible, crazy action story.” Of course the Deadpool star gets plenty of love at home from wife Blake Lively and their two daughters James and Ines, while Jackson has been wed 37 years to actress LaTanya Richardon with whom he has an adult daughter. “I enjoy watching Ryan on screen and I

know him on a personal level and like him, so I thought we’d have interesting screen chemistry,” says Jackson, 68. While shooting the film, the couple let their humour rip. “Sam is so good at improv and can play ball with the best of them, and that is my background too so we just got out there and had as much fun as we could. We had a good thing going,” says Reynolds. If much of their on-screen bonding takes place during high speed car-bike-boat chases, Jackson is happy to let the stuntmen do the heavy lifting although Reynolds prides himself on doing as many stunts as

humanly possible. “The only problem is that sometimes I push myself a little too hard and forget that I am 40 years old and cement hurts,” he quips. Ever the romantic, Hayek relishes her unconventional screen romance with Jackson, purring in husky, sensual tones. “It’s love. They have the most amazing, passionate, crazy, mad relationship that is full of fire in every way. The best part for me is that as notorious as Kincaid is, you definitely get the idea that Sonia is his match, and he knows it,” says the sultry Mexican bombshell who knows a thing or two about romance, walking down the aisle with French fashion billionaire FrancoisHenri Pinault on Valentine’s day 2009, even naming their daughter Valentina.

Accompanied by her now 10-year-old daughter on a flying visit to Los Angeles, Hayek admits she’s a chip off the old block. “She’s part comedian, part lawyer. She‘s been on a lot of my movie sets with me now but I won‘t allow her see my R-rated films or let her hear me swear, like in this movie. I only use loving sweet words at home with my family.” Nontheless, Hayek didn’t hesitate a second to sign on to play Jackson’s foulmouthed bride. “Sam is a legend and I was excited to finally work with him. It’s been so easy and fabulous to be his wife, and even if she’s his crazy wife, you can see why they are meant for each other.” The biggest challenge perhaps for the petite actress was her epic bar fight where

she takes on five guys, bringing them to their knees. Unprepared for the scene, she says, “They were going to use a stuntdouble but I decided at the last minute to do it myself. I was sore for a week after we shot that but I’m so happy that at 50 I’m still kicking ass and able to do all my stunts. “It all worked out well and fortunately I didn’t hurt anyone. The only time I’ve injured anyone was when I punched director Mathieu Demy in the face and dislocated his jaw.” If Jackson’s philosophical hitman confesses on screen, “Love? I was thinking, ‘Oh man, this new The Killers song sounds like Talking Heads, this is great!’ TW Who would be your dream musical mentor or collaborator? BA Anyone that makes money (laughs). I don’t know, Paul Kelly; or someone with a bit more diversity and style, maybe like Tim Rogers.Yeah, Tim Rogers. I respect that guy’s career. Do music for a couple of years, become a model and then work for David Jones. TW Tell us about your new release. BA About a week and a half ago we released ‘For The Story’ and we’ll be putting out an album soon this year if it all goes to plan. ‘For The Story’ is a bit of a celebration as much as it is a critique of people just doing things purely because they want to have a memory for later on; whether or not it’s a good or bad memory. TW What do you love about Perth/WA? BA The weather. I know it’s pretty average today but compared to every other city in Australia, our weather’s the best I reckon. And it’s just home really.

f you’ve been following Illy since his earliest releases, you might remember the beginnings of him carving his name into the Australian hip hop scene in 2009 with his Triple J Like a Version rendition of the Pixies’ Where is My Mind? and first album Long Story Short. Fast-forward past his second studio album The Chase, nominated for his first ARIA, his third album Bring It Back, which won Illy his first ARIA, and even still past his fourth album Cinematic, certified gold among other accolades… bringing us to Two Degrees, nominated for a total of six ARIAs – evidently, Illy’s Obama-inspired journey, moving two degrees, then two degrees, then two degrees, has moved him all the way to his most successful album yet and a massive 2017, with his regional tour still underway. Two Degrees takes hip hop to a whole new level – it doesn’t just sample from other

genres but blurs the lines with flavours of electronic and pop bursting through. It’s radio-friendly sound has been built upon the groundwork of previous Cinematic tracks like Tightrope, bringing us Illy’s most polished and popular hits, Papercuts featuring Vera Blue and Catch-22 featuring London’s Anne-Marie. Illy says the success of Cinematic is what gave him the confidence to go for it with Two Degrees and he’s more than happy with how the result turned out. “Even though in Cinematic I was trying to do more than just rap, I’ve always loved melody and song writing and the singing aspects of albums,” says Illy. “Two Degrees in particular is at points a hip hop album, at points it’s an electronic album and then at other points it’s almost a pop album. I’m really proud of it and it has really pushed those boundaries for me.” Despite a gradual shifting of Illy’s style,

I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK ON THE ROAD FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. what has remained a consistent theme throughout all his albums is a title track that best sums up the point that he’s at in life. Staying true to tradition, Two Degrees does just that with lyrics that reflect Illy’s journey of making small, incremental changes over time to end up somewhere different. But with change comes an influx of new fans and a departure of at least some of the old – you can’t please them all and Illy makes no apologies for not trying to. Forget It, the album’s intro track, is a lighthearted reaction to the mix of opinions his fluid music style has aroused. “Forget It is a playful intro track, there’s nothing too heavy in it – I don’t think I was takings shots at anybody,” says Illy. “I think everyone wants to have an opinion, everyone’s entitled to an opinion, but I’m also entitled to disagree and have my response to it. I don’t get too caught up in it because the response has been so overwhelmingly positive and there’s so many more people that like my music now than they did this time last year before the album came out.” Despite some fans who resonate more

with Illy’s earlier sound, his new stuff has been killing it with the masses and his recent national tour was a testament to that. Even more importantly, Illy loves what he’s been doing. “For me personally, I really love the direction that I’m going in,” Illy tells me. “I definitely want to keep pushing my ability as far as a songwriter goes. I 100% wholeheartedly feel that my best stuff is still to come and I guess that’s professionally or musically kind of aspiring for me; to just keep getting better at my craft and keep pushing myself to do new things.” Illy shares that he currently has a few demos in the works and he hopes to keep building up ideas while on the road; but with a big six months ahead with his upcoming regional tour, he has a lot on his plate. “Yeah, it’s going to be, um – talk to me at the end of November and we’ll see if I’m still in one piece,” he laughs. “I’m looking forward to just playing shows. I love playing shows and the capital city run was awesome but there’s people who couldn’t make those gigs,” says Illy.

“I made my bones at the start of my career by playing these regional shows and going out there and just because the situation’s changed it doesn’t mean I’m going to stop when I have the opportunity to keep going out there. So yeah, I’m looking forward to getting back on the road for an extended period of time.” When I ask Illy if we can expect to see any of his guest singers performing alongside him at his regional gigs (fingers crossed) Illy is hopeful, but at this stage uncertain. “I hope so, but one of the problems with working with such talented people is they have their own sh*t going on as much as I have my sh*t going on, but if it lines up I definitely want that to happen.” PL Illy – Two Degrees Regional Tour, coming to WA August 3 to 18. ooking at a map of Indonesia you can come to a few quick conclusions. One, it’s big. And two, there’s a lot of water to cross if you want to have a good look at it so, three, you're probably going to need a boat. You'll findsa very nice one with SeaTrek Adventures. Another thing to consider is the inverse relationship that exists in the quality of food and accommodation and the distance you travel east of Bali and Lombok. That’s fine for young and intrepid backpackers, but what of the more well-heeled traveller who likes his or her creature comforts and can afford to splurge a little extra on a nice comfy en-suite

cabin and a great selection of food and beverages served up three times a day while undergoing their journeys to the world’s remote and wilder parts? This is where SeaTrek Adventures comes in, a Bali-based sea cruising company specialising in taking people on voyages of exploration on their two very large and traditional pinisi live-aboard boats, the Ombak Putih and the Katharina. Having seen much of Indonesia by plane, car and motorbike, I decided it was time to put to sea for a change and I booked a passage with SeaTrek on a seven-day cruise entitled Dances, Dragons and Magical Lakes. The itinerary would take me from Bali to Lombok, across the top of Sumbawa, and through the Komodo National Park, with a multitude of sea- and land-based adventures along the way, not least of which would be an encounter with the legendary komodo dragon. an hour away to Padang Bai, where our sleek and sexy ship was waiting our arrival. The crew were there on the beach with the tender boats to take us out to the beautiful behemoth anchored and waiting in the bay: the 42-metre long Ombak Putih. Her name means â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;white waveâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in Indonesian, and she has been cruising the waters of eastern Indonesia for nigh on 20 years, after her keel was laid in 1995 and operations started the following year. Regular maintenance and lots of love by her owners and crew have kept her ship shape and Bristol fashion, and she is a delight to sail on. Painted white, with blue trim and sails and a tropical hardwood superstructure, she lives up to her name as she cuts through these tropical waters. Our first afternoon was spent getting acquainted with the boat, the crew and our fellow travellers as we plied our way across

the Lombok Strait. We anchored at sunset just off the Gili Islands with cocktails in hand and a sense of keen anticipation and excitement for the days ahead. Most of the guests rose each day at dawn to watch the sun come up and experience the cool morning

air before breakfast. Every day was different: we visited local villages, showered under sacred waterfalls, walked through riverbeds filled with buffaloes and butterflies, swung into mountain pools on ropes, made wishes at a magical island lake, snorkelled with manta rays and marvelled at dolphins from the foredeck, before arriving in the Komodo National park, where we lay on pinky-white

sand beaches, swam in crystal clear waters and encountered fierce and mighty dragons on the islands of Komodo and Rinca. With long days of sea cruising, nights spent in comfortable and stylish cabins, great meals, cold drinks, lots of snorkelling, swimming and island adventures you’d be hard pressed to think of any room for improvement, but our crew and our very attentive cruise director found ways to do just that. Each time we returned from any excursion, welcome drinks and cold towels, turned-down beds and hot meals were not far away. They fed us, entertained us, partied with us, sang to us, ferried us around, kept our cabins in order, and made sure our boat got to where it was going with a minimum of fuss. Although the boats have sails, it’s only possible to set them when the wind is really blowing favourably. With schedules to keep and places to be, time is of the essence so the diesel motor is king and the sails are seldom used. That said, the crew will pull them up at least once per trip for a couple of hours to show the boat off in her full pre-machine-age glory, something we got to experience while sailing through Komodo’s waters. On longer cruises through more open waters there are more opportunities for actual sailing, but even without it you are in for one hell of a adventure holiday.

SeaTrek doesn’t just cruise for the fun of it. They plan their trips very precisely by doing lots of historical, natural and cultural research. Through discussions with their captains, tour guides and experts they find the best routes to take and the best islands to visit so as to allow their guests to capture an amazing glimpse of remote island life in Indonesia. rucifixes that talk, shop assistants with the faces of Botticelli angels, sanctified blood that miraculously liquefies.You could believe anything might happen in Naples, never more than a Hail Mary away from being buried by the fractious Mount Vesuvius. I was in the city to buy a mandolin. This, the most lyrical and romantic of instruments, has its origins right here in old Napoli. The mandolin has fascinated me since I bought my first one many decades ago in Belfast; now it was time to get the genuine article. The city’s imbroglio of steep, narrow streets allow for just two feasible modes of transport: moped or foot. I opted for a Vespa scooter tour. It’s the only way to see Naples - and if you’re lucky, you don’t die. My driver would be guide, historian, translator, and indeed friend, on an odyssey along streets festooned with washing lines and tenements adorned with peeling stucco and graffiti. I’d caught the ferry in from Sorrento,

and while waiting for the Vespa, had a snack at the Caffe Gambrinus - previous customers: Oscar Wilde, Guy de Maupassant, Ernest Hemmingway. It’s not difficult to understand the cafe’s popularity; the pizza and coffee were just about the finest I’d ever tasted. Blimey. And I’d only been in the city five minutes. The scooter turned up. Antonio Mosca of Vesparound revved up his machine and we were off - along rutted streets and up the steep switch-back alleyways of this dodgy 3,000-year-old city. Equal measures of sheer beauty and squalor whizzed by. Naples has over two hundred churches, from ancient chapels with strident weeds growing out of every crevice, to epic cathedrals resplendent with medieval riches. Here, in the shadow of some of Christendom’s most glorious art, dramatically gesticulating people let it all hang out. These in-your-face citizens are more than happy to include you. We stopped at music shops, junk shops, bakeries and

ancient bars where locals would bid us join them. For a city with a reputation for organised - and indeed unorganised - crime, it is an astoundingly friendly place. Not all the time, though. A roundabout, overlooked by the 16thcentury Sant’Agnello Maggiore church, was the scene of the Lambretta scooter encounter. A distractingly beautiful woman sat on its pillion, facing backwards, chatting on a smartphone. Meanwhile her boyfriend weaved through the traffic. He avoided our scooter by inches, only to fall foul of a taxi driver. They traded operatic insults; all the while the pillion woman smoked her cigarette and continued her conversation. The traffic came to a halt; Antonio was

gesticulating - by this time I was too. The Napolese encourage you to join in. Obstruction cleared, and we were now closing in on the Via Sebastiano: music shops and luthiers a speciality. We settled on Strumenti Musicali Miletti, a byword among mandolinistas. Ornella, the assistant, was endlessly helpful. Antonio explained my lifelong love of the instrument, and my longing to be good enough to play on a Neapolitan masterpiece. “Ah the mandolin,” she sighed, “both a gift and a curse.” Couldn’t have put it better myself. A glass cabinet was unlocked, and a hand-carved maple and spruce work of art handed to me. This antique model was made right here in Naples in the 19th century. I picked out a few notes of Santa Lucia (what else, for goodness sake); the tremolo notes resonated like a bell in the old stone-walled shop. The fretting was laser accurate, the strings as easy to press down as an iPad keyboard. Alas, I didn’t have $8,000. Ornella produced a more modestly priced instrument. Magnificent. An Umberto Gechinni, complete with briar

walnut pick-plate, inlaid with motherof-pearl. My fingers glided over the fingerboard. I wanted to say, right wrap it up now, and let’s go celebrate eponymously with a Bellini cocktail in the Piazza Bellini, just at the end of the street. But Antonio told Ornella we were undecided. Bargaining is a way of life here. We strolled down the Via Sebastiano, past more music shops, second hand shops, violin shops, instrument repairers. Streets were lined with traders selling everything from market produce to the most extraordinary bling. Shop early for Christmas – every conceivable decoration is available on the Via San Gregorio Armeno. The nearby Via San Gregorio Armeno is almost entirely devoted to selling Christmas decorations or ‘presepi’, the most famous supplier being Ferrigno Marco at number eight. Customers have included Bill Clinton, Silvio Berlusconi and me (although not together). Even if you’re an avowed humbug, you’ll enjoy deciding whether to go for a little statue of Donald Trump or one of Pope Francis to adorn your Christmas tree, or nativity scene this year. The baroque pantomime of Neapolitan life is played out against the smell of pizza and coffee wafting from every street corner (Naples is the cradle of the pizza as well as the mandolin). We passed the Church of San Domengo where Thomas Aquinas, one of the big hitters in the mediaeval Catholic Church, was a teacher. It was here in Naples that his spiritual guidance arrived through a surprising medium — a crucifix began talking to him. Who would doubt it in such a city as this?

NAPLES WAS FOUNDED by the Greeks, who were somewhat inevitably followed by the Romans. Christianity was next up - St Peter and St Paul both preached here. Thereafter Europe’s foremost gangs showed up: Goths, Normans, Angevins, Fascists. This regular change of Neapolitan overlords bequeathed an enormous legacy of art and architecture to the city. But if you never ventured beyond the gloriously hedonistic Spanish Quarter, or the outrageously free-wheeling Spaccanapoli, the old Roman road which bisects the city, you’d still have a ball. Antonio pulled on my elbow as I stared up at the decaying Roman aqueduct that follows the Spaccanapoli — it’s an utterly unique feature of the city. He persuaded me that some light sight-seeing duties would be in order, not least a visit to Napoli cathedral. Most of the main cathedral, the Duomo, was built in the 13th century, but subsequently devastated by serial earthquakes — God’s behaviour can be somewhat disconcerting on occasion. The Duomo is the venue for the miraculous, and regular, liquefying of St Genarro’s blood. A vial of solidified blood of Napoli’s patron saint is brought out in solemn procession. Held aloft, the blood miraculously liquefies, to the accompaniment of encouraging cries from the faithful. Don’t Roger Moore your eyebrow: this is Napoli. It has to be a recurring miracle. Plenty of paintings too. You might feel like heading straight for Caravaggio’s Flagellation of Christ, shuddering with violence and despair in the bombastic Bourbon-era palace that is the Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte. It’s an arresting sensation to see this revered image in the city where its creator would regularly set his dogs on unsuspecting fellow citizens – just for fun. The hugely influential artist led a tumultuous life. He was renowned for brawling, drinking, gambling and general debauchery. Somewhat surprisingly he made it to the ripe old age of 38.

Fretted matters

Mandolin matters curtailed further flaneuring, and we returned to Miletti’s. A price was negotiated; the deal was done. After farewells that would not have disgraced Marco Polo heading out to the New World, we returned to base. Baked goods No matter what your business is in Naples, stay a few days and you’ll soon have your own favourite square. You’ll have your favourite cafe and favourite waitress – the one with a smile that lights up the piazza. The cats will be dozing in the shade, the oleanders fluttering slightly in the breeze. You’ll nod thoughtfully to yourself; yes, Naples has boundless artistic treasures, but this is no tourists’ theme park. The waitress will arrive with your bottle of Lacryma Christi (‘Tears of Christ’) — a wine produced locally by monks. You’ll look contentedly round this shambles of a metropolis knowing that you’ll be back — you could love this utterly compelling place. I took along the mandolin on my final day in the city, and in the hairdryer heat of a Neapolitan evening I plucked a nice fat D chord and started humming “. . . scuzza me, but you see, back in old Napoli, that’s amore. . . . .” PL

THE FAMILY’S HISTORY OF DENTAL INTERVENTIONS CONTINUES - THIS TIME WITH MATTHEW’S MOUTH IN THE SPOTLIGHT.

he unspoken truth about teeth is that they’re simply not fit for purpose. I’m serious - compared to most everything else in our bodies, they are, frankly, terribly designed. Basically, their whole raison d’etre is to chew stuff, to turn our food from beautifully plated-up delicacies Jamie and Nigella would be proud of to gunk that can travel easily down to our stomachs ready for the whole breaking down into nutrients and energy palaver. That’s it, that’s all we need them to do. It wasn’t the toughest task handed out when evolutionary forces were putting us together. In truth it’s nothing more than grunt work – teeth are the ditch diggers, the manual labourers, of the body part community. The heart, for instance, is resolutely keeping our blood flowing, the brain’s making all the decisions, conscious and unconscious, the lungs are doing simply spectacular things with nothing but fresh air, a host of other bits and pieces are constantly working minor miracles – and then there’s the teeth. Chew. Grind. Repeat. And yet, like the worst example of overentitled ingrate tradies, they make a massive song and dance about it all and, without constant care and management, will simply stop working every now and then and cause strife for all about them. Think about it. Make-up wise, they’re a bit similar to bones. Now bones, barring the most vehement attacks from merciless diseases or the ravages of old age, will just get on with the job.You don’t have to do anything much for them except try to avoid hard bumps on the footy field and bizarre trampoline accidents – they’re just there doing their thing, quietly and efficiently. And what about teeth’s near neighbour, the tongue? Just don’t bite it and that guy’s going to have your back, no problem, not just helping out with the whole eating thing but also doing pretty amazing things as far as talking goes. Eyes, admittedly, sometimes don’t work as well as they could, but there’s no real maintenance there, just a nice pair of glasses every couple of years, contacts for vanity days and goggles when

you’re at the angle grinder. Ears are the same. Cotton buds occasionally, but you’re not really even supposed to go too deep with those. But teeth? Teeth want the world. Twice a day. Cleaning, top, back, front, with a hardbristle brush and their very own cleaning agent. And flossing. Don’t forget the flossing. And is that enough? Oh, no, that’s nowhere near enough. My theory is that however much love and attention you give your teeth, there’s no stopping one or two of them just giving up the ghost, crumbling under the stress of their manual labour and really ruining your day. Which is where I am right now as I’m writing this. Yes, it’s coming up on half eleven on a Monday morning and I’m four and a half hours away from the dentist’s chair, four and a half hours away from having the latest workshy slacker pulled kicking and screaming from my head. This particular tooth started griping a couple of weeks ago. Nothing too serious, just the odd whimper and moan, the odd indication that all was not well in the back reaches of my jaw. But, like the worldweary foreman who can tell from a hundred yards when the apprentice’s laboured cough is a signal that he’s going to phone in a sicky any day now, I knew the niggling wasn’t going to go away. So off to the dentist I went. Now, I need to be clear here that my animosity towards teeth doesn’t spill over into any ill feeling towards dentists – especially not the one our family goes to who is a genial, eloquent chap with a great bedside manner, young, good looking, the

kind of individual I’d be very pleased if my daughter brought home in a decade or so. What’s more, he’s wonderfully nonjudgemental. As we parade our many children in front of him for six-monthly check-ups, he accepts our British ancestry for what it is and agrees that we’re doing the best with can with the cards we’ve been dealt. So, no – dentists are great, and ours especially, so I put my mouth in his hands and braced myself for the worst. “Yeah, basically it’s knackered,” he told me, but not in quite so few words. There was talk of root canals and localised decay, other things that I don’t really recall. But then he cut to the chase, telling me: “It’s three grand to fix it, three hundred bucks to take it out.” Well, there’s your classic no-brainer right there. At 46, I told him, I think I’m a bit long in the tooth to be worried about the cosmetics. He nodded and smiled, pretending to appreciate the pun that he hears a half dozen times a week, handed me a script for antibiotics and told me to make another appointment and we’d get the job done then. And that appointment is now four and a quarter hours away. I’m not scared of course. No, my dentist’s lovely and it’s not as though he’s actually going to do what I’ve told the kids he’s going to do (I may have suggested that because they’re all so expensive I’ve had to take the economy route which involves a mallet and a rusty monkey wrench), so of course I’m not scared. Just aware of what’s going to happen in four hours and ten minutes. Looking forward to it being over, that kind of thing. In the meantime my moaning molar is making a last, concerted effort to make my life a misery, cranking up the jabs of pain like it knows it’s a condemned man. But, hey, do your worst, you useless chunk of calcium, you. A few days from now, I’m going to be feasting on a crusty baguette and you’ll be at the bottom of a bin somewhere. Just four hours to go. Pass the ibuprofen and wish me luck. PL
