JANUARY POIROT STAR RETURNS TO PERTH David Suchet will once again entertain audiences around Australia with tales of his 50-year long career, in conversation with journalist Jane Hutcheon in the new year. FEBRUARY MISSY, MEG AND DIDIRRI BRING ALL THE FEELS One of Australia’s most dearly-loved singer/songwriter/performers, Missy Higgins is joined by he ever-ascendant Meg Mac and acclaimed new talent, Didirri. This show marks a special return to Kings Park & Botanic Garden for Missy. In February earlier this year, she was supporting good friends the John Butler Trio for two special shows, but on the second night, fell ill and wasn’t able to take the stage. WASO JOINS BEN ON TOUR Ben Folds is teaming up with WASO as part of a nationwide concert tour, performing at Perth Concert Hall on March 16 and 17 next year. Known for his musical versatility across the pop and classical genres, Folds has travelled the globe performing with some of the world’s best orchestras for over a decade. “I grew up playing in orchestras, so being on stage with one feels like home to me,” Ben said. “In these concerts, the orchestra is my band. record breaking time and receiving rave audience reviews across the country earlier this year, internationally renowned, award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, Tim Mincnin is coming back, with BACK in 2020. Perth Festival set to ignite the City of Lights On a bedrock of Indigenous culture, Perth Festival 2020 will be welcoming everyone to a glorious summer celebration of people and place.

ore than 250 events across theatre, music, dance, opera, film, visual arts and literature and ideas – many of them free including the much-anticipated 10km AC/DC tribute on the Canning Highway – will dazzle audiences from near and far from February 7 to March 1. Mavis Staples, Neil Gaiman, Meow Meow, Rufus Wainwright, Kate Tempest, Bryony Kimmings, Paul Kelly – the 2020 Festival artists are as wondrous as the 14 brand new Festival commissions that celebrate such diverse figures as Gurrumul, Philip Glass, Beethoven and Bon Scott. New artistic director Iain Grandage’s four annual programs on Noongar Boodjar will capture an everexpanding orbit of stories from the local to the global. “Perth Festival 2020 will be a huge, euphoric celebration of Perth, Western Australia – it’s my home town and I love it,” Iain says. “We will be introducing a sparkling new Festival hub, City of Lights, including our new contemporary music venue Chevron

Lighthouse, as well as welcoming the return of the much-loved Chamber Music Weekend and premiere exciting new theatre, dance and music works made especially for you by talented local artists working with artists from across the country and around the world.” The theme of Karla – a Noongar term meaning fire and by extension country and home - is at the heart of the Perth Festival 2020. pending a couple of hours in Besk is like having a grown-up’s play date with 200 people at your best friend’s house. One where you can amuse yourself with all the toys, wallow in the joy of being with good mates and marvel at elegantly rustic surroundings designed to celebrate life – friendships, a tipple or two, watching the footy, reading the paper and food that hits the spot – almost. The typical pub staples coming from an open kitchen where the chefs are as much a part of the party as the punters, are not the main reason people are swarming into this vast newlyopened neighborhood bar on a come hither strip in West Leederville. It’s a bar. No, it’s a bottleshop. No, it’s a pub. Whatever, it’s pure genius by owners Elliot Moore (Mane Liquor) and Ben Braham (Braham Architects). Apart, that is, from leathery kingfish tostadas ($19), dense house-made foccacia and lacklustre labneh ($14) which let the food side of things down slightly, considering they are right next door to Mary Street Bakery. But a beef burger ($22) made with

Angus beef and a sensuous brioche bun brought back a sense of well being, thanks to a tender, pink-in-the-middle patty cooked lovingly over the charcoal fired grill. The accompanying crisp, fat chips – salted to perfection – released a dopamine wallop and cried out for another Coopers Sparkling Ale ($9). Woodlands Chardonnay ($24, 750 ml) served in a carafe added to the sense of comfort pervading this vast space which wins the award for best street presence of any venue around. The best, as in four shopfronts rejigged

to create a venue which is already something of a landmark to welcome local residents and train commuters – and dogs – with equal warmth. There are outside nooks where you can feel the sun on your back while you sink a craft beer. There’s a wine room you can get lost as you browse a rotating selection of well-chosen labels to drink in house (for a small corkage fee) or take away. hen my editor suggested a review of the number one dive bar in the world so many thoughts ran through my head. Firstly, we’re number one in the world for something? Go us! Secondly, a dive bar hasn’t been my scene since uni days (they were some years back, for those wondering). Third, a quick check online to make sure a dive bar was what I still understood it to be (because often words change meaning over time where things with negative connotations are now the opposite) confirms what I thought. A ‘dive’, according to Merriam-Webster, is ‘a shabby and disreputable establishment’, the same meaning as I still expected. So it was with some trepidation that I donned my faux leather pants and headed out with the best friend for drinks on a Saturday night to get to the bottom of just how Joe’s Juice Joint in Northbridge attained this worldwide gold star status according to the global travel company ‘Big 7 Travel’ list of the world’s best dive bars. We head down a graffitied laneway behind William Street and in through a dodgy doorway manned by friendly

doormen, and here we are, about to discover Joe’s Juice Joint. Down a peeling band poster-plastered stairway you enter a dimly lit, dark and moody bar with booths and tables, Elvis pinball machines and rock music. The bar shines with bottles of American bourbon and a huge range of whiskeys. There are cocktails like the Tequilaquarium, served in a fishbowl for sharing, frozen Long Island cocktails, rum and whiskey cocktails, craft beers, wine;, a plethora of booze choices in fact. I order a delicious whiskey sour and a bowl of complimentary unshelled peanuts was delivered too; we settle into one of the

Dive in for a great place to party, drink whiskey and enjoy late night rock vibes. Grab a group of friends and a Tequilaquarium. Hours: Weds – Thurs 8pm – 2am, Fri to Sun 8pm – 4am Price: $2 Cheezels, $10-20 burgers and dirty fries, cocktails start at $14 booths. Thanks to that ever-present rock music, this is not the place for quiet and meaningful conversation but we can hear each other talk at least. There is a small food menu of cheeseburgers and fried chicken burgers, dirty fries, and chicken wings.

There are also Cheezels for $2 a bowl and I’m not going to lie, whiskey and Cheezels is life-changing. The music ranges across rock genres from grunge rock to some classic Pink Floyd to Bon Jovi rock anthems and a sneaky favourite from The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army. The bar fills quickly with groups of guys on boys’ nights out, a hen’s party, and couples on dates. The vibe is fun and the whiskey selection is hot. Joe’s is everything you want from a classic dive bar; I dove in and loved its late night vibes. If you’re in Northbridge it’s definitely worth a visit to end your night. Just don’t forget to order the Cheezels.

The Rottnest Cruise staff are brilliant, they knew my bestie and I both got seasick so they made sure to tell us where not to sit on the boat when it was rocky and they also filled up our glass whenever they were empty. Definitely our kind of people. For lunch a long table is set up on the boat and you tuck into fresh crab, prawns, pickled octopus, seafood tacos and a whole bunch of amazing salads. You definitely won’t leave this cruise hungry. Then the crays are cooked on the BBQ right in front of you. Honestly, if they were any fresher, .you’d slap their face. Whether you’re a tourist, a local who hasn’t been to Rotto for a while or you’re showing someone WA’s best bits, the Wild Seafood Experience is the perfect activity. SUMMER TRACKS There are lovely trails to be discovered while in Perth and its surrounds. Here are some which are especially beautiful in summer, thanks to our friends at Trails WA.

irst things first if you’re planning on exploring a walk trail this summer; here are a few tips to remember: • Don’t overestimate your abilities. Choose a trail that is suitable for the least fit or youngest member of your walking group. • Avoid walking during the hottest part of the day. Start early to skip the heat. • Tell someone where you are walking and what time you expect to be back. • Drink plenty of water before, during and after your walk. In hot weather, bring at least 2 litres of water per person. • Protect yourself from the sun. Wear a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen whenever you’re outside walking. • Wear sturdy, comfortable and enclosed shoes. Save the thongs for the beach.

• Snakes are more active during summer. Watch where you’re putting your feet and avoid walking through long grass. If you do spot a snake, leave it alone. Move away quickly and calmly.

Jenna Biddi Yorga Blackwall Reach, Bicton TIME: Less than 1 hour LENGTH: 2.1 km DIFFICULTY: Grade 1/Easy The Jenna Biddi Yorga is not only an excellent summer walk trail; but it’s also a special place for the Whadjuk Noongar people. The 2.1km trail runs along the cliff tops of Blackwall Reach, from Bicton Baths to Point Walter, taking you on a river journey to learn about the cultural significance of the area - including the white sands which were once a birthing place for Whadjuk women. ON THE RECORD with Spacey Jane’s CALEB HARPER

s most bands do, Caleb, Kieran, Ashton and Peppa came together through blooming friendships and lucky connections. A debut gig in Caleb’s dad’s backyard kicked it all off and in the year that followed, Freo’s very own garage pop outfit Spacey Jane went from backyards to bright lights. They’ve since shared the stage with

Alex Lahey, The Jungle Giants and more, along with Australian festival appearances at Splendour in the Grass, Falls Festival, Yours & Owls and WA Day’s SOTA Festival, and have just been nominated for a J Award. WILCO/YANKEE HOTEL FOXTROT It’s probably Wilco’s best-known album but I think it really is the most

special. Hailing from rhythmic, guitar heavy alt folk, the album is wildly experimental in lots of ways and was a huge risk for the band. I think Jeff Tweedy’s raw storytelling (heartbreak and Illinois) along with Glenn Kotche’s amazing drumming are my favourite parts of the album. ARCTIC MONEY/WHATEVER PEOPLE SAY I AM, THAT’S WHAT I’M NOT I listened to this album almost exclusively for the entirety of my first summer out of school. I had my own car and just tore around Geraldton with it blasting on CD. The energy it gave me was like nothing I had felt before from music, I was 17 years old in rural WA but I could feel grimy Sheffield and I wanted to be a part of it badly. THE STROKES/IS THIS IT I watched The Strokes at Splendour 2016 just after Spacey Jane played our first ever show. This album sound tracked a period of beginning to love music again. I’m obsessed with Nick Valensi’s stand out yet simple riffs - I think his work is really underrated when people talk about The Strokes. Of course, Julian’s the star of the show, he’s the one artist I most want to meet. KINGS OF LEON/YOUTH AND YOUNG MANHOOD My first introduction to Kings of Leon was through the documentary, Talihina Sky. Being raised in a strict religious household myself, I felt some kinship to the story. The album is so biting - it just drew me in at 16/17 and made me want to make thrashing six-string rock. Still Running was inspired heavily by that album.

ARCADE FIRE/ THE SUBURBS The Suburbs always scared me a little bit, the concepts throughout never really made sense to me as a kid but I could understand the tone. Win’s haunting light voice and dissonant piano sounds create an arid soundscape that reminds me of many west coast road trips. ALVVAYS/ALVVAYS I ran out of mobile data about four days into a seven-week trip overseas and this was one of the only albums I had downloaded on my phone. Molly’s beautiful melodies over big reverb guitar sounds really transport me to another place when listening - it’s the perfect travel music. Anytime I listen to that record I can clearly picture long walks through forests in southern France and the Swedish countryside. THE SMITHS/THE QUEEN IS DEAD Morrissey has the greatest male voice I’ve ever loved, and Johnny Marr is the father of guitar-based indie music in my humble opinion. I think The Queen is Dead is the best combination of those two things. I’m not a very broody person but this album nearly brought on a goth stage. PREFAB SPROUT/STEVE MCQUEEN Ashton and I first heard this album during our first time in a recording studio. It was the first time I’d ever really appreciated how special vinyl could sound especially well preserved 80’s original pressings. When I show this album to people they tell me it’s Yacht Rock - but that’s why I love it. One of Australia’s favourite musicals has a fresh new cast, same important message.

s idyllic a place as tropical Broome sounds it hasn’t always been a paradise for its Aboriginal people. 1960s Western Australia, the setting for Jimmy Chi’s coming-ofage musical comedy Bran Nue Dae, could have made for a dark slice of history because of the trauma facing Aboriginal families. But instead this first ever Aboriginal musical goes on a journey of discovery with young Willie who hitchhikes his way back from mission school to Broome, seeking to win the heart of the girl he left behind. The Pigram family, musical icons of Broome play a big part in bringing Bran Nue Dae back to the stage 30 years after its 1990 debut.

Speaking from Broome, Ngaire Pigram, dancer, singer, writer and director, takes on the role of Aunty Theresa in this new production which reprises the roles of many of the actors, including Ernie Dingo who starred in both the stage version and the film. Ngaire, mother of two young adult sons, 23-year-old Bojesse, who is also part of the ensemble and 19-year-old apprentice boilermaker, Seth, has been performing professionally for around 15 years. “I love it and I’ve never really wanted to do anything else,” she says, particularly growing up in a family who love to perform as well in a creative family. Ngaire is a proud Yawuru/Wajarri woman whose Wajarri maternal grandmother came from the Murchison

where she was taken as part of the Stolen Generation and grew up at Sister Kate’s. Her Yawuru father is part of the Broome mob. “Being able to say that means a lot to me, knowing who my people are and where we come from. “Although there is still a lot I have to learn about my mother’s side because of the Stolen Generation,” she says. While Ngaire doesn’t believe celebrating 30 years of Bran Nue Dae puts pressure on the cast she says it definitely gives them energy which creates a sense of excitement to be bringing it back. “We feel complete and utter excitement and pride to be a part of it. “So many of us that are connected to it are a part of it and it’s a privilege to bring it to today’s society. “Although there is a little bit of pressure, because the first time around 30 years ago it blew everyone away as the first Indigenous musical.” Ngaire says she saw the first Bran Nue Dae theatre production while living in Perth when she was about 10 years old and it blew her away. The Pigram family is heavily involved in this production of Bran Nue Dae. Her sister and father, son Bojesse, cousin Danielle, nephew and niece, an uncle and several others are all involved in the production. She grew up with the three original members of the band, Kuckles, Stephen Pigram, Michael Mavromatis and Jimmy Chi, listening to them play. Her sister Naomi Pigram is Associate Director for the musical, something Ngaire says makes her very proud. “I have total faith in her ability to bring to this production what she knows in her heart is what Uncle Jimmy would have wanted. “He’s up there smiling, I’m pretty sure, or laughing. “It’s definitely a family affair and I’m very excited about how that’s going to be. It feels right.” Ngaire had a part in the film as

a dancer, but has done stage work before so is not worried about the transition from film to stage. “There’s a very different energy when you are doing film to live performance. It’s almost an instant high from the gratification you get each and every night with live performance. “To tell this story over and over each night is going to be very moving for me. “Even in the auditions, singing the songs got me choked up because I know how much it means to my people, how much truth is speaks and

where Uncle Jimmy was coming from when he wrote it. “It’s going to be a roller coaster ride, but a very enjoyable one.” Ngaire is excited to be taking on the role of Aunty Theresa, a strong woman who has been through much. “She finds her place with God and he inspires her to make the changes she needs and I think anybody, no matter who they see that inspiration through, whether it’s God or someone they know, to be able to do that is an amazing thing. “I like that she has been through so much, but still triumphs.” Bran Nue Dae opens in Perth at the Regal Theatre from February 6. AIRPORTS Getting to and from the airport - The CONNECT shuttle operates to and from Perth Airport Domestic Terminal 3 (T3). If you arrive at the International Terminal 1 (T1) or Domestic Terminal 2 (T2) take the free terminal transfer bus which operates seven days a week to T3. Rail & Ferries

TRANSPERTH TRAINS run from the City to Armadale, Clarkson, Fremantle, Midland and Mandurah. You can take the same train from one end of the rail network to the other.
