Our resident Bar Hop guru, Sloane Carvell, has visited Strange Company in Fremantle and found it to be the perfect place to hang out with new best friends. I reviewed Raine Square’s latest addition, Hunter & Barrel, and would recommend you bring a big

WHAT’S NEW Perth seems to be changing every day and it can be hard to keep up with what’s new in town. Fortunately, that’s where we come in . . . New waterslides at Perth’s Outback Splash Thrill-seekers, stand by! Some of the country’s most exciting waterslides are about to open at Perth’s Outback Splash. A massive six-storey slide tower, featuring four mind-blowing new waterslides, will open in time for summer, from November 20. Combined, the new slides are 489

metres, or almost half a kilometre in length. There are two raft slides, an extreme thrill slide and WA’s fastest body slide – aptly named ‘The Wedgie’ – capable of producing speeds of up to 75 km/hr with the rush of 100 tonnes of water each hour! Perth’s Outback Splash has long been one of WA’s top destinations for outdoor fun. In addition to the four new slides and other water-based attractions (open September to April), it offers year-round family fun, including mini golf, mazes, sensory play, children’s playground, Australian animal experiences and an onsite café. Axe attack Axe throwing is a thing apparently and Perth has got the biggest facility to do it, in the entire southern hemisphere. Maniax Axe Throwing opened its doors to the 940sqm purposebuilt warehouse this September in Northbridge, conveniently perched between bars and restaurants for the perfect before or after activity. Owner Adam Schilling came across the highly successful and alternative sport while on holidays in Canada and thought it just might be a hit over here too. “I wanted to give it a try, but it was completely booked out. It was then I knew all this craziness might just excite our local Aussie market and be something huge. I was determined to bring it back to Australia,” Adam said. “It started with beers, a bunch of different types of axes, mates and some knocked up axe targets in my backyard. We lived in Coogee in Sydney at the time, surrounded by apartments.” The Perth location is set to hold up to 120 people. It will be the first

of the chain to have two of their iconic four-tonne trees and also the first to have a VIP Chamber of Steel for meetings, private functions, or if punters want to kick on beyond their axe throwing session. Maniax guests can also step up to the Chopping Block, an elevated viewing platform where you can watch the throwing action from up above. Running until October 13, the first weekend is always a super-popular event with locals and visitors alike. Thousands will visit the charming, historic Wheatbelt town (just one hour from Perth) as York gets busy across three weekends with music, art, food, performance, workshops, exhibitions and activities for all ages. The festival highlight this year is Japanese Wara Art. Wara (rice straw) art was developed as a way of finding a creative use of the excess straw leftover at the end of the rice harvest. Once used to make things like tatami mats, rice straw has been replaced by modern synthetic materials, leaving farmers with an abundance of straw. The resulting sculptures spawned a new art practice and Wara Art Festivals are now held each year throughout Japan. Each weekend has activities and exhibitions for all the family. Presented by Writing WA in association with Writing NSW, the festival will delve into everything from climate change to orangutan protection, water, ‘alternative facts’, and Indigenous knowledge. PROTEST AND UNREST (until 8 Nov 2020) This fascinating exhibition examines the history of protests and conditions at Fremantle Prison using personal accounts from prisoners, officers and the administration. From violent riots to peaceful sitouts, our new exhibition Protest and Unrest at Fremantle Prison explores the conditions and regime under which prisoners lived, why they felt the need to protest and the ways in which they expressed their dissatisfaction. Imprisonment means the loss of freedom, but do prisoners also lose their right to basic hygiene, decent food, personal space and safety? If they are dissatisfied, how do they fight for change? Several protests will be examined in detail, using personal accounts from prisoners, officers and the administration. The rotten food, appalling living conditions and accusations of torture and abuse, were used as justification by prisoners for pushing back against authority. Showing objects never displayed before, such as improvised weapons from the 1988 riot, an electric battery box and prisoner graffiti, this exhibition will present a confronting view of life inside. Visitors will be challenged by the question: in the same situation, would you protest too? HALLOWEEN TOURS (30 Oct - 1 Nov) Fremantle Prison will have you screaming with fear and delight again this year with the return of our popular Halloween tours. Join their guides in the dark as you visit cells protected by the spirits of lost souls, encounter dark corners and ghostly shadows. Get into the spirit, join the fun and come dressed in your Halloween best. There’s safety in numbers, so why not get a group together and get ready to scare yourself silly. There’ll be no point screaming if you miss out! Tours run from Wednesday 30 October to Friday 1 November.

School Holiday Activities LOCKED UP! TOURS (1 - 10 October) With its walls, gates, bars and cells, Fremantle Prison was designed and built as a place of incarceration. These school holidays on the exclusive kids-only ‘Locked Up!’ Tour, children can find out more about life on the inside. Designed for children aged 8 to 12 years old, these special tours cost $15 and are running at 10am on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the October school holidays. Kids will step inside and explore Fremantle Prison as a place of incarceration for both convicts and prisoners. From prisoner processing and mugshots, to daily work and activities, kids will be guided through a prison experience before they make parole. This tour is strictly for kids. Don’t worry, grown-ups – you are welcome to book in for the Convict Prison Tour while the kids are doing time. ESCAPE! TOURS (2 - 11 October) Let the kids escape these school holidays on the exclusive kidsonly ‘Escape!’ Tour. They are guaranteed to have fun while learning about this amazing site. A brutal beauty With Brutalist design back in favour and a revival of interest in the art of the 1970s, AGWA marks the 40th anniversary of its 1979 Brutalist icon with a suite of special exhibitions and events. AGWA 40 is a season exploring the development and design of the building with the exhibit Perth Brutal: Dreaming in Concrete, plus talks, performances and a symposium presented with Curtin University’s School of Design and the Built Environment. The art of the 1970s in WA will also be revisited in the exhibition That Seventies Feeling... the Late Modern. A special AGWA Open Night includes Co3 dance company celebrating the architecture in movement, alongside a special appearance by design guru Tim Ross. Opened on 2 October 1979 by then Premier Charles Court to mark the 150th anniversary of the Western Australian State’s foundation, the new Art Gallery of WA building was a dramatic example of late Brutalist architecture designed by Polish born Charles Sierakowski Perth Brutal: Dreaming in Concrete opens out the many layers of the history of the building’s development featuring images of the building in construction and its early days, along with ephemera such as building models, plans, diagrams and drawings, 20

La dolce vita The Lavazza Italian Film Festival celebrates 20 years with a vibrant programme this October. The festival will showcase 26 of the best new Italian films from the last year as well as classic cinematic gems, Special Presentations, aperitivo

Don’t miss . . . Hometown hero After selling out his national tour in record breaking time and receiving rave audience reviews across the country earlier this year, internationally renowned, award-winning musician, comedian, actor, writer and composer, Tim Minchin is coming back, with BACK in 2020. The show was Tim’s first Australian tour since returning to the country after almost a decade of living overseas and was seen by almost 69,000 Australians after a seven year absence from the stage. or such an audacious and extraordinary concept, you need an extraordinary and audacious mind behind it. Enter, stage right, Dr Miles Gregory, the Kiwi Shakespearean scholar and artistic director of Pop-Up Globe Australia. A colourful character with handlebar moustache and jaunty beret, Dr Miles is in town to talk about his passion project; and for once the hype lives up to expectation. “I was reading a pop-up book about Shakespeare’s Globe theatre to my daughter Nancy in 2014 and she asked if she could she go and see a play in the Globe,” he explains. “I said that it was an awfully long way from Auckland to London where a replica of Shakespeare’s first Globe is but that set off an idea in my head. Would it be possible to build a fullscale replica Globe, put on shows and demolish it again? Could we fill the theatre with a festival of Shakespeare’s masterworks?” The answer, as it turns out, was an emphatic yes. Just 15 months after the initial inspiration, the Pop-Up Globe opened to huge acclaim, attracting over 200,000 people during its New Zealand runs. Then it was over the

ditch to Sydney and Melbourne where once again crowds swarmed in their thousands. And now it’s Perth’s turn - and there’s no reason to believe that once again this unique theatrical experiment will bring Shakespeare to the masses in an original new way. “We’ve put on 17 productions in four cities and built the theatre five times - which is more times that Shakespeare managed,” Dr Miles quips. His Globe is based on Shakespeare’s second version of the Globe - with a tiled rather than

thatched roof. The London Globe is thatched - Shakespeare’s original version burnt down. The attention to detail is secondto-none. Scholars were consulted to ensure that the dimensions and stagecraft elements were as close to the original as possible. The resulting experience for the audience is nothing short of unforgettable. Nobody is further than 15m away from the action. There’s a standing area in the Yard in front of the stage where so-called ‘Groundlings’ watch the show. “A groundling is a type of fish that lives at the bottom of the English Channel, swimming in schools with its mouth open,” says Dr Miles. “I never knew why this part of the audience section was called Groundling until I

saw some blood fly off the stage onto the Groundlings and they all moved, as one, with their mouths open. It all made sense,” he chortles. With those tickets only costing $29, it’s possible for everybody to enjoy the thrill of a live performance of Shakespeare, as the Bard intended it and, more importantly, where it was intended to be performed. The plays somehow make more sense when they’re seen in the theatre design that they were written for - an authentic version that very few in the world have witnessed. “The great thing about seeing Shakespeare like this is that it’s a proper night out, a full experience,” says Dr Miles. “Theatre exists so briefly and it’s great to share it with friends. You don’t sit in the dark, nobody is telling you to be quiet. There are sword fights, blood baths, jewels and dances. The noise from the audience is so great at times that the whole theatre vibrates. It’s really more like a boxing match or a pop concert than a play.” Such is the physicality of the way the plays are performed, that the actors lose weight during the four play run. “They have to have their costumes refitted half way through,” says Dr Miles. “At the end of Hamlet for instance, there’s the longest duel we’ve ever put on. It takes so much from the actors who give so much to the audience.”

HUNTER AND BARREL, RAINE SQUARE

he clue’s in the name of the newest addition to the CBD’s Raine Square’s roster of eateries. Any notion that this is anything less than a temple to carnivores and booze-lovers is dispelled by the large, stylised antler motif hanging over the floor-to-ceiling bar. Actually, that bar at the back of the room looks like the perfect spot to spend a lazy few hours before hitting Perth’s streets for more. We were there for lunch and the vibe was buzzy, friendly, the kind of place you’d say you’d have just the one cocktail and then say ‘same again’ soon after. The Love of Lychee was our chosen poison for the day. Sure, it was a mocktail (damn you, work), but it looked and tasted like something far more potent. Same again, I said. We were hungry so went, all guns blazing, for the heaving sharing board to kick things off. There were scallops served in hot shells with feathery laces of crispy leek and a herby Cafe de Paris-style butter, calamari, golden and tender with a spritz of lemon and a zingy nouc cham dipping sauce on the side, spicy chicken wings and then there was the hot cheese served in a

skillet the size of a table tennis bat. Dipping flat bread into this oozy sunyellow puddle reminded me of how it’s the simple things in life that make you go ‘ooh’. Melted cheese and bread doesn’t sound revolutionary but it is when it tastes this good. We may have been ladies who lunch but we were also ladies who fancied a bloody great steak, if it’s all the same with you. I’d read recently that the steak served at the Whitfords Hunter and Barrel had left one diner so impressed, they’d said it was even better than a similar serve at Crown

Perth’s Rockpool. Surely such a sacrilegious opinion couldn’t actually be the case - could it? The chunk of wagyu I was served, burnished bronze like Arnie’s thighs, was a perfect juicy morsel. Cooked rare as requested, you could choose to have it served with in house basting or pink rock salt and a lemon wedge. I’m a NaCl girl all the way but did fancy a bit of sauce so went for the blue cheese option, amping up the umami to the max. My equally bloodthirsty companion chose the eye fillet and we continued to empty the H&B larder with a side of seasonal greens and some Hunter’s mash. If you’re dining with a crowd, it’s worth considering ordering one of the multi-featured options: choose from the Hunter’s, King’s or Royal Feasts and you’ll be ploughing your way through piles of meat, chips, skewers and that star in a skillet, the hot cheese dip, for days. We both loved our mains, the simplicity of being served a wellexecuted hunk of meat on a plate with

some delicious co-stars a reminder that a good meal doesn’t begin and end with foams and microplaned fronds of this and that. Alternatives to steak include barramundi, kangaroo, slow-cooked lamb and crispy pork belly, skewers and ribs. This ain’t the place to bring Vanessa the Vegan. Rolling towards dessert like two inflated beach balls, we went all in and chose the apple skillet pie (clearly we’re Skillet Gals) with orange syrup and a delectable Fior di Latte ice-cream - and because that wasn’t quite enough gluttony, we also tried the walnut brownie which was such a generous portion, you could have taken it home and used it as a significant contribution to your new home’s slab. If you’re in Raine Square for a movie, make room for a Hunter and Barrel session. Just make sure you’re wearing the loose pants. remantle’s Strange Company isn’t much of a stranger these days. It’s been around since 2015 and has carved a niche for itself as a popular weekend spot. If it’s a stranger to you though you’ll find a small wine and cocktail bar with a big reputation and another bonus: it’s open every day from noon to midnight because let’s face it, it can be a struggle to find a good drinking hole on Sundays in Perth. It also offers tapas-style food with a fabulous drinks list. I pop in on a Sunday afternoon with the bestie for drinks in the afternoon sun. The wine list is fresh and has a strong focus on some of Australia’s best wine regions including those on Fremantle’s doorstep, from the Great Southern, Margaret River and the Swan Valley. It includes wines made conventionally as well as wines for those that want to challenge their palate with skin contact or textural wines made in non-traditional winemaking methods. For the beer drinker, there are guest beers on tap. The wine and cocktail list created by Tom Daniel and Elise Godwin is

I love a negroni and find them so refreshing on a warm day carefully categorised to define how adventurous you want to be in your choices. The bar staff are always willing to help you make a choice should you remain baffled. There are also some wines that are limited to a focus board above the bar and it’s from this that we select the Corymbia 2018 Chenin, a wine with beautiful pear notes and textural acidity. It’s the ideal match for sunshine drinking.

A visit to STRANGE COMPANY may result in some of the best non-strange company you will find south of Perth. Sunday afternoons at Strange Company have the added bonus of live jazz and blues and, buoyed by this jolly atmosphere, we decide to order from the tapas menu some half-shell scallops with lemon myrtle, Duroc 18-month Serrano ham from the charcuterie list which comes with cornichons (that’s miniature gherkins to you and me), and bread to share. There’s also some lovely Cambray

Camambray cheese from Nannup and some French Petit Agour served with bread, apple and some fruit paste. We settle in for the afternoon and catch up, with wine, good food and music. The vibe is very friendly and relaxed and as always in neighbourhood bars, we end up chatting with those seated around us in the sun. If you were visiting our sunny state on travels alone you would easily find a friend to talk to here, and if not, the friendly bar staff will no doubt oblige. The cocktail list contains about 12 cocktails and changes according to the seasons; they too are helpfully categorised – Spritzy, Fruit, Sour, Fresh and Bittersweet making the list approachable for everyone. I love a negroni and find them so refreshing on a warm day. The bartender offers to make one not on the list using barrel-aged Giniversity Gin, Cynar and vermouth and it is perfect, the variation of the Cynar (of which the main ingredient is artichoke) removes some of the sweet edge that Campari can give and makes it very earthy. 49

My bestie and I went on a blisteringly hot 40-degree day so we couldn’t wait to throw ourselves into the deep blue sea and cool down. Then just when you think things couldn’t get any better, you’re served fresh oysters and a Champagne as you dry off from your dip. Yep this, my friends, is living. 80

The Rottnest Cruise staff are brilliant, they knew my bestie and I both got seasick so they made sure to tell us where not to sit on the boat when it was rocky and they also filled up our glass whenever they were empty. Definitely our kind of people. For lunch a long table is set up on the boat and you tuck into fresh crab, prawns, pickled octopus, seafood tacos and a whole bunch of amazing salads. You definitely won’t leave this cruise hungry. Then the crays are cooked on the BBQ right in front of you. Honestly, if they were any fresher, .you’d slap their face. Whether you’re a tourist, a local who hasn’t been to Rotto for a while or you’re showing someone WA’s best bits, the Wild Seafood Experience is the perfect activity. The cruise itself is only three hours long so you’re not on a boat the whole day and, as, there’s only about 15 people on board, it never feels cramped or crowded. City Calm Down’s lead singer Jack Bourke shares his favourite tunes over the years. THE BEST OF VAN MORRISON This was the only CD we had in the car growing up. It’s a pearler. My brother, Jim, would sing along and I’d yell at him to shut up. I just wanted to listen. Sensing some enthusiasm for Van ‘The Man”, dad took me to see the full cut of The Last Waltz when I was about five or six-years-old – despite Van’s impressive appearance in purple, four plus hours proved a little much for an inattentive child. AMERICAN BEAUTY – The Grateful Dead I think Dad had this on a double cassette. It’s still one of my favourite records and when I listen to it I’m instantly transported back to my childhood. It doesn’t prompt memories so much as a feeling – a feeling that everything’s going to be alright. The emotional connection to time and place is one of things I love about music. ANIMA – Thom Yorke I was a bit dismissive of this record

when I first listened to it. Not because I wasn’t impressed with the writing and production, but because it felt like a collection of Radiohead offcuts. But then I watched the short film by Paul Anderson and the record made a lot more sense. It’s more emotionally distant than most Radiohead records, but when combined with the abstract choreography of the film and the romantic undertones it’s a captivating listen. SAM’S TOWN – The Killers Like American Beauty, this record is able to transport me back in time. I listened to it a lot in the summer after finishing high school. I still think it’s their best work – it’s ambitious stadium-sized pop music that doesn’t put a foot wrong and it has certainly aged well, particularly compared to some of their other work. STRANGEWAYS HERE WE COME – The Smiths This was the first record by The Smiths I listened to. I think a friend

gave it to me. It’s a strangely addictive listen. Morrisey’s morose sense of humour and the way it twists and turns in the most unexpected ways was a revelation on first listen. It doesn’t contain any of their more well-known hits, but this might be because they released it after they broke up and they never played any of the songs live. That makes the record somewhat tantalising, because some of the songs on there are the best in their entire discography (Stop Me If You Think You’ve Heard This One Before, Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me) – it feels like if they had toured it and the band kept on that these songs would be among their biggest hits.

MIDNIGHT OIL – Midnight Oil Mum and Dad gave me the Oils debut self-titled record for by 15th or 16th birthday. I was a mad Oils fan during my teenage years (I still am to be honest) but this was still an obscure choice by my folks. It paid off though, because I had those seven tracks on repeat for a long time. Being more familiar with the Oils more popular songs, this record gave me a greater sense of why the band was so vital – they sounded (and still sound) like no one else. They remain the benchmark for Australian music in my opinion. ELECTRIC WARRIOR – T.Rex Bolan’s strut on this record is

mesmerising. From the slinky vocals to the crunchy guitars and dull timbre of the drums, everything is in its right place. And then you get to the songs! The aloof wit of the lyrics on ‘Cosmic Dancer’ are the highlight of the record for me and seem to best capture Bolan’s essence as a musician and songwriter. I wish I was alive when this record came out… FURTHER – The Chemical Brothers I’m not sure that it’s their best record – it would be hard to top Surrender in terms of its musical impact – but it’s certainly my favourite. I’d listened to The Chemical Brothers on and off for a while before Further came out, picking songs here and there, but had

always struggled to see past some of their more odious hits ‘(Salmon Dance’, ‘Galvanize’ for example). This record enabled me to see them in a new light and encouraged me to explore their earlier fantastic releases. Catch City Calm Down at The Rosemount on October 19, 18+. Visit oztix.com.au 87

It’s the musical that’s got the whole town talking - Allen Newton meets the star of The Book of Mormon, Nyk Bielak.

anadian actor Nyk Bielak, currently in WA to perform in the Broadway smash hit musical The Book of Mormon, plans to eat his way through Perth. On a whirlwind one-day publicity tour with co-star Aussie actor Blake Bowden, Bielak’s first visit to the city included dinner at Long Chim which he says has inspired him to spend his Mondays off, searching out more Perth food hotspots. “I’m excited to see more and eat my way through Perth,” he says. The Book of Mormon debuted to riotous applause at the Crown Theatre on September 3 for a 10-week run. Written by South Park creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, with music by Frozen composer Bobby Lopez the controversial The Book

of Mormon draws on the same kind of dark humour audiences are used to in South Park as it follows two naive Mormon missionaries trying to spread God’s word to a fictional tribe in Uganda. The satirical production, which contains offensive language, pokes fun at religion, but doesn’t seem to have attracted the ire of Mormons who Bowden says have even advertised in the Broadway show program to promote their faith. “I saw the show on Broadway with the original company and I loved it,” Bowden says. “I was shocked they had written something like this, but also in awe of its brilliance. “As much as it pushes the boundaries, it’s also a classical musical.”

The show is about this odd couple who find themselves together and go on a journey together and discover their foibles along the way, which is why it is so funny as these two naïve kids try to find their way out in the real world,” says Bowden.

Bielak says that while The Book of Mormon doesn’t have a conventional musical theme it works really well. “I was a huge fan of South Park already and a big theatre person so to see my two worlds colliding blew my mind a little,” he says. Bowden and Bielak have been with the show in Adelaide and Bowden said a couple of their Mondays off had been

spent exploring South Australia’s wine regions. He said previous visits to WA had included visits to Margaret River, but the pair were also keen to visit the Swan Valley wine region and to check out Perth’s beaches. While they will be out to have some fun on their days off, the actors say their primary focus will be on continuing to hone their stage roles. Bowden, who plays Elder Price, has been with The Book of Mormon since the Australian company debuted in Melbourne in 2017. He has a strong background in musicals and theatre and has produced and performed a solo show and released an EP Blake Bowden: Straight From The Hart featuring the reimagined songs of Rodgers and Hart. His screen roles include Young Jack in the film The Dam, Brusco in Home and Away, Mr & Mrs Murder, The Chaser and as the Young Boy Pirate in The Wiggles Movie. Bielak, who plays Elder Cunningham came to Australia direct from the New York company of The Book of Mormon in which he made his Broadway debut and has toured with the production across the United States and Canada. Rail & Ferries

TRANSPERTH TRAINS run from the City to Armadale, Clarkson, Fremantle, Midland and Mandurah. You can take the same train from one end of the rail network to the other.
