Whatever it was, come ’84, ’85, while the Americans were busy tarting up what they had learned from the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal and painting themselves hair metal, Swedish bands such as Axewitch, Torch, the magnificent Overdrive and, yes, Europe (In The Future To Come – quintessential polar molar-loosener), were mining the dark and chilly dungeon-mad medieval recesses of the form, basically from Maiden and Angel Witch down through Holocaust and Witchfinder General. The end result is a formidable style that was doomy, resolute, pure of metal intent, somehow classier than proposals from other countries, full up with mystique like Scorpions from the Uli era. History would prove that it was no fluke, with Sweden dominating the late ‘90s and 2000s with any number of high-flying acts strutting their command of genres from melodic thrash down to the world’s best stoner rockers out-Sabbathing Sabbath. Oh yeah, and back to the original thought we opened with, it was indeed a Swedish band that had (arguably) kicked out the first NWOBHM album — or at least a record that was a candidate for one of the decade’s heaviest albums and possibly the first of a new modern ‘80s metal — and that would have been Full Speed At High Level by the mighty Heavy Load, one of the root bands of Sweden’s esteemed phalanx of heavy metal institutions.

Really, it’s so much quality from such a small country, which will become all too graphically clear as you stagedive into the moshpit of this book expertly compiled by Janne Stark, axe legend all over Dream Away, a song that is the locus of the greatest riff in this entire elegant encyclopaedia of thundering metal from the north.

Starting from our first band ATC and sitting here 30 years later having recorded or performed with everyone from Michael Jackson to Alice Cooper on more than 2300 albums, more than 50 gold and platinum awards, Grammy nominations, several number 1's on Billboard and so much more. Dreams do come true and i know that for countless of the 11.000 people listed in this book they all start out the same and for many they did come true!

One of my first memories of Swedish hard rock was when me and my buddies in Trilogy went to Stockholm to check out the band Heavy Load, who were playing at Jarlateatern, sometime 1980-81. I had managed to nick half a bottle of whiskey from my old man, which we split on the train to the city, meaning we were pretty "strong" once we arrived. Of course, we had no money for the entrance fee, but a helluva lot of ideas on how to get in!

We went up to the lady at the counter and said we were brothers of guitarist Ragne and that we were on the guest list. She said there was no guest list, but we insisted it was at the office. She told us to wait there while she went and got it. Of course, we said, and quickly ran in as soon as she disappeared. It wasn't much people there so we ran up to the stage and started headbang frantically when they started playing. I remember they blasted off a smoke bomb half a metre from where we were standing. It must've been powerful enough to make an impact on the Richter scale, and safe distance, what the hell is that?! I also remember we were extremely impressed by their backline and the mountain of Marshall amps, cabs and Styrbjörn's Ludwig kit with double bass drums, 40 tom toms and a million cymbals! Not to mention the band's stage outfits, leather trousers, fur vests, boots and I remember Styrbjörn playing in steel net armour... True Viking style!! At this time one of the world's most famous furniture designers, Eero Koivisto, played bass in the band.

He became so excited he jumped off stage and started rocking with us. I got a notion and retuned his bass completely, but he didn't notice and just kept on rocking... Maybe it was a wise decision to go for a designer career instead. After the gig we were invited backstage by the band's manager/roadie, now renowned journalist Anders Tengner, to meet the band, which was huge! I remember we got their autographs, and Anders also wrote his. He had the writers itch already back then! Then we were on our way back home on the train to Märsta with ringing ears, burned eyebrows and a nascent hangover, but happy like children at Christmas after having sat in Santa's lap and been given the best present ever - Heavy Metal!!

Ian Haugland (Europe)

The constant question (especially when I did the documentary Så jävla metal) is how come there are so many metal bands in tiny Sweden? There are of course various answers to that, everything from the climate to easy access to rehearsal space etc. But why metal?

Now it gets a bit more philosophical. Is there something in our nature? Melancholy?

Anger? The Vikings… THIS we can speculate about until the cows come home. The main thing is that there’s a lot of great music being made here, and that there are many gifted musicians and composers. Our responsibility is to make sure the possibilities are given to our children and future generations to continue this tradition. In your hand you’re holding an encyclopedia of thousands of metal bands from Sweden, all the fantastic music they have created and all the inspiration they can provide. That’s a great start!

ish band Brazen Abbot and blues guitarist Tommy TC Carlsson. Tony Niemistö recorded an album with sleaze-rockers Geisha and in 1993 he worked with Danish hard rockers =Y= (featuring Yenz from Brats/Geisha, Oliver Steffensen and Hal Patino). John Norum pursued a quite successful solo career and recorded an album with Don Dokken. There was by the way also an Italian band called Europe that released a self-entitled album on the Chord-label in 1986. A live recording from Solna 1986 was bought by Empire records, but as the band didn’t feel it was good enough to be released it wasn’t until much later. In 1996 Ian started a pop-project together with ex-Visitors man Göran Danielsson under the whitty name Brains Beat Beauty (First Came Moses Victor VICP-60173). What was to be the second Trilogy-album, changed into Haugland-Hofgard, as the bass-player/singer was sacked and Ian took over the vocal task. An album however never saw the light of day. Ian also played with cover-band Let’s Party together with Peo Thyrén and Dag Finn (both ex-Sha-Boom). In ‘97 Levén and Haugland backed ex-Fortune singer Benny Söderberg in his project Clockwise. Levén, Haugland and Micaeli were also involved in the rock ‘n roll project by Swedish singer Thore Skogman. In 1998 Levén joined the band Eyeball, together with Mats Levén (Yngwie, Abstrakt Algebra etc and Fredrik Åkesson (Talisman). However, they changed their name to Southpaw and released one album. Ian and Mic were also part of cover band White Purple, lead by Alien-guitarist Tony Borg.

In 1999 Europe finally re-united to do a one-off performance on the millennium New Years Eve. The line-up featured Joey Tempest, John Norum, Kee Marcello, John Levén and Ian Haugland. The band played The Final Countdown live on national television when 1999 became 2000 in the blistering cold. The 1999 re-release of The Final Countdown is a horrible dance-version, where some blasphemic person has more or less removed the heavy guitars and put progammed drums all over the place. The first pressing actually had a Freudian misprint... it lacked the first “o” in the last word... In 2002 Ian started working as a radio DJ at Radio Rockklassiker in Stockholm and was playing with the resurrected Sha-Boom, Joey released his third solo album in 2002, Kee was producing and working on solo-material which later surfaced as the K2 band, Norum was again recording and touring with Don Dokken. Some buzzing began about a possible Europe re-union, once the tax debts had been written off… Finally, October 2, 2003 Europe announced their comeback. The band was recording a new album. Initially the line-up was going to feature both Kee and John, but that idea didn’t really work out, leaving the strongest player standing. The band’s debut live show was recorded for Swedish radio and the band performed the title track of the forthcoming album, Start From The Dark, showing a more modern and heavier side of the band. The album, along with John and Michelle Norum’s son Jake, arrived on September 22, 2004. The song Hero was a tribute to John and Joey’s hero Phil Lynott. John also released his solo album Optimus on his birthday the subsequent year, February 23, 2005. There are several similarities between the album and the style in which Europe went. John also made some guest appearances and recorded a tribute to Frank Marino on the album Second Hand Smoke.

In October 2006 the Europe album Secret Society was released, continuing on the same path as Start From The Dark. The first single off the album being Always The Pretenders. The band recorded a semi-acoustic show in January of 2008, released on vinyl, CD and DVD as Almost Unplugged. John also started recording the follow-up to Optimus, which was supposed to be released in 2008, but tragedy struck with the sudden demise of John’s ex-wife, and mother of his son Jake, Michelle and it was postponed. In 2009 Europe recorded the album Last Look At Eden, using new producer Tobias Lindell. The album showed a bluesier Europe, with a retro-touch leaning more towards classic Deep Purple style hard rock, still with some modern heavy riffing. The title track, and first single, however bears some traces of bands like Coheed And Cambria. In 2009 John recorded a three minute long, retro, spaced out guest solo on the Frank Marino cover Talkin ‘Bout A Feelin on the album Volume Two by Mountain Of Power, released in 2010 on Grooveyard Records. 2010 also saw the release of John’s long-awaited solo album Play Yard Blues (Mascot Records), which also had a retro style hard rock feel to it. In 2011 Ian Haugland played on the solo album Diamonds And Dirt (SPV) by former Thin Lizzy guitarist Brian “Robbo” Robertson, with whom Norum has played on several shows. In 2011 Kee Marcello also released his revealing autobiography, plus an album featuring his version of some Europe-tracks, entitled Europe: Redux. The Europe autobiography Only Young Twise, by Mattias Kling, was also released this year. In 2012 Europe returned with yet another slab of music, Bag Of Bones, this time taking it to yet another heavier level, more classic seventies hard rock. The album was produced

by Kevin Shirley (Iron Maiden, Joe Bonamassa, Black Country Communion etc) and featured guest spots from guitarist Joe Bonamassa and drummer Anton Fig. The first single off the new album was Not Supposed To Sing The Blues. Late 2012 Norum started working on a new solo album.

Last Autumns Dream, Claes Andreasson and Torbjörn Wassenius (both ex-Talent) and Mikael Erlandsson. The vocals on the album are shared between Erlandsson and Wensberg (Prisoner).

The debut featured a backing band featuring Motörhead drummer Mikkey Dee, former HammerFall bass player Rosén and the highly gifted “I’m-on-all-albums” guitarist Tommy Denander.

Anders Johansson: v/g, Dan Tibell: k, Björn Klingvall: b, Anders Köllerfors: d Jönköping - Anders Johansson, Pelle Pettersson and bass player Mikael Hed were previously

known as Christian hard rockers Johannes, under which name they recorded a single. They changed line-up, style and name to Heartcry, still with a Christian message. The first album is half pop-oriented AOR, and half heavier and guitar-based. Then featuring Anders, keyboardist Dan Tibell (Jerusalem, Agape) bassist Jerry Grimaldi, drummer Jack Kelly and drummer Pelle Pettersson. The second album is heavy-edged AOR sung in Swedish. The line-up now featured Anders, Anders Tingsvik (k), Jörgen Olausson (b) and Christian Eidevald (d). You can also find the track Going Home on the Twisted Sounds compilation. On the third album, also sung in Swedish, the band was a trio with keyboard player Tingsvik out of the band. After some years of silence the band was suddenly resurrected and released through the label owned by Narnia singer Christian Liljegren (aka Rivel). The line-up offered some new changes with Anders still in the lead, Dan Tibell back on keyboards and now backed up by bass player Björn Klingvall and drummer Anders Köllerfors. The album had a more metal approach at times with a touch 1990 LP - VT 002 of Rainbow, all in English and with an absolutely horrible production. The subsequent album Firehouse contains six tracks from the first LP only release and six new songs, actually sounding really consistent anyway, which also goes for the mix. The musicians on the album were a mix of earlier members such as all three drummers and both bass players besides Anders and Dan. However, this is the band’s best effort. Anders later formed metal band Green Sleeves.

After the album bass player Kirst was temporarily replaced by Peter Valefors. Svensson also plays bass in Terror 2000.

the demo Beguile in 1997. The vocals on the debut were handled by Per Richard. They also recorded a demo-CD entitled Lies in 1999. Heavy, slightly Metallica-influenced metal, but with cleaner vocals. In 2002 the band released a five track CD-R entitled Time, now featuring singer Andi. In 2005 the band recorded yet another demo entitled Fear Comes Alive, now with new singer Anna Olsson. A new attempt was made with the album Final Day, now produced by Mike Wead. In 2009 singer Per Richard returned and Stoor was replaced by Marcus Sundquist.

songs featured on the W.E.T (Jeff Scott Soto’s band) album, Nilsson has played with Nasty Idols and Bai Bang while Glenn found a home in popsters Brandsta City Släckers. Today, Persson and Nilsson are found in cover band Seven. Quite lightweight, but good, melodic hard rock.

Michael Backlund on bass. Before this Ragne Wahlquist released the very rare funkish pop/ rock single It’s A Dream/Everything Or Nothing (1976 Universum) with the band Tommy Mac Frees. It’s definitely not hard rock, but the B-side contains some pretty fierce solo riffing from Wahlström. The year after the formation of Heavy Load, Michael was replaced by Dan Molén and the debut Full Speed At High Level was recorded. The style was heavy riff-oriented seventiesstyle hard rock. Heavy Sound Records went bust and the band started their own Thunderload Records. In 1979 Dan was replaced by Thorbjörn Ragnesjö and guitarist/singer Eddy Malm was added to the line-up. Eddy had previously recorded two singles with Highbrow. The band’s image was the Vikings at large, well-chosen with their music in mind. The album Stronger Than Evil features the song Free with Thin Lizzy’s late Phil Lynott on bass. The band’s last single featured new bassist Andreas Fritz who was formerly in Wisdom and was an attempt to put some commerciality into the band, which failed. In 1987 the band reunited with former UFO-bassplayer Paul Gray, guitarist Patrik Karlsson and the Wahlquist brothers. An album was recorded but never released. In 1988 the brothers built their own recording studio and started working with their record company Thunderload Recordings. The exclusive track I Am Me is featured on Rocket - Caught In Steel (85 Virgin). In 1999 Hammerfall recorded a cover version of Run With The Devil for the Power From The North compilation in the Thunderload Studio with the Wahlquist brothers behind the desk. Eddy also recorded a 4-track demo in 2000 under the name Eddy Malm Band (also featuring the members of the band Bosse), in the true 80s vein with a strong touch of his former band Highbrow. The Wahlquist brothers have recorded and produced several bands such as Veni Domine, G.O.L.D and Isengard. The brothers are a true enigma.

Lots of labels have contacted them trying to get the rights to re-issue the albums on CD, but none have succeeded. The result? Well, there are plenty of bootlegs out there!

Lawless, rabid and sworn to the dark continued producing the band. When the band released Lawless Darkness they were suddenly the hype of the year and even won a Grammy in 2011 for best hard rock. Their dramatic live act featuring fire, rotten blood and all kinds of paraphernalia is something in-between a Satanic sermon and a concert. Nothing for the fainthearted. Jonsson is also in Die Hard. Lawless Darkness contains a cover of Death SS track Chains Of Death. Opus Diaboli was released in the commemoration of Watain’s 13 yeat anniversary and the DVD is live and documentary. Watain play tight, well-produced and well-arranged riffy black metal in the vein of Dissection or a better produced and updated Bathory. The Wild Hunt was more progressive and orchestrated.

THE BONUS CD This time I have opted for a different type of bonus-CD. Since most “previously unreleased” tracks are now available all over the Internet, I’d instead like to open your ears to some bands that were never actually released (or haven’t been yet).

These were bands that have made recordings I feel should have been/should be given a proper release. Some of the members are/have been found in other name bands.

Prepare yourself to find some new hidden gems!

If you think I forgot to add the year of recording, I did it deliberately. It may be 1994, and it may be 2013. Some stuff is just timeless...

1. AMBUSH Don’t Stop (Let Them Burn) (4.50) (Music: Sjöholm/Lyrics: Engkvist) Oscar Jacobsson: v, Adam Hagelin: g, Olof Engkvist: g, Ludwig Sjöholm: b, Linus Fritzson: d Växjö - The new millennium saw a new wave of classic Swedish metal come alive.

Guys that were not even born when heroes like Heavy Load walked the earth.

Ambush was formed November 27, 2012, on a night of beer-splendour, listening to classic 80s heavy metal, feeling nostalgic and frustrated that new productions didn’t measure up to the old masterpieces. So they decided to do something about it.

2. EDDY MALM BAND Turn In Down (3.50) (Music: Malm-Hesselrud/Lyrics: Malm) Eddy Malm: v, Per Hesselrud: g, Peter Söderström: b, Olof Bergius: d Stockholm - If you have heard the stuff Eddy did with Highbrow, prior to joining Swedish Viking metal originators Heavy Load, you will feel at home. The members of the band Bosse are fans of classic heavy metal, so naturally they became Eddy’s backing band. The track was taken from the band’s four-track demo.

3. HELLACOASTER Mani Jack (3.47) (Music+Lyrics: Karlsson) Petter Karlsson: v/g/b/d Skövde - After leaving Therion, Petter wanted to do his own thing. He also wanted to go back to his musical roots of Judas Priest, Slayer, early Metallica and Manowar.

He recorded a bunch of songs in 2009, a thread he has again picked up. Petter is also the man behind the drums in Master Massive.

4. ICE AGE General Alert (4.03) (Music: Nyström-Kihlstrand/Lyrics: Kihlstrand) Sabrina Kihlstrand: v/g, Pia Nyström: g, Viktoria Larsson: b, Tina Strömberg: d Göteborg - OK, Ice Age are actually featured in the book, but since they have not had any legitimate release, I’ve decided to include them. They deserve it.

5. MASTER MASSIVE Time Out Of Mind (4.44) (Music+Lyrics: Strandh) Tony Niva: v, Jan Stradh: g, Yngve Frank: g, Karl Nyhlin: b, Petter Karlsson: d Skövde - It all started in Akt, followed by Act, followed by the band that made me discover guitarist Jan Strandh - Zanity. I featured the track Time Out Of Mind on one of my previous compilations. Zanity later became Master Massive. The band recorded numerous outstanding demos and an album that was going to be released

by Loud ‘N Proud Records, just before they folded. The song is still alive!

6. MACBETH Sound Of A Hurricane (4.18) (Music: Larsson-Johansson/Lyrics: Saether) Pelle Saether: v, Lars Johansson: g, Torbjörn Larsson: b, Mats Hallstensson: k, Håkan Andersson: b Stockholm - It started around 1983/84 in Boden, in the band Hexagon, which featured Lars, Torbjörn and Håkan. The lads relocated to Stockholm. Macbeth was formed in 1987, when Torbjörn drafted his former Glory North colleague Saether.

They split in 1988, when Thorbjörn joined John Norum and Lars was busy with Candlemass. Norum liked Sound Of A Hurricane, which actually is a bit similar to his song Face The Truth. Thorbjörn is now a chief physician and plays covers, Lars is still in Candlemass, Pelle is fronting Grand Design and Mats is in House Of Shakira.

A guy presumably named Christer Andersson played drums on this recording.

7. THE HIDDEN For Gods Ache (2.48) (Music+Lyrics: Möller) Teddy Möller: v/g, Peter Leitinen: g, Patrik Sporrong: b, Matte Modin: d Uppsala - It all started when Teddy (Mayadome, now Loch Vostock, F.K.Ü) wanted to do a thrash album. He gathered some well reputed friends and recorded the album Fearful Symmetry. Unfortunately, it was never released.

Recorded in Blueflame Productions 1999, by Teddy and Fredrik Kjörling.

8. VOLTERGEIST Desperate Highway (3.53) (Music: Karlsson/Lyrics: Englund) Per Englund: v, Mats Karlsson: g, Peter Olander: g, Mike Larsson: b, Peter Hermansson: d Stockholm - When 220 Volt took a halt in 1992, Karlsson, Olander, Larsson and Hermansson decided to form a new band . They drafted former Blacksmith/Motherlode singer Per and Voltergeist was a fact. They recorded a bunch of great demos, did lots of live shows, and sadly split only a year later. Here is a taste of what could have been.

9. PAINKILLAZ Lost My Religion (4.53) (Music+Lyrics: Sedenberg/Osbäck/Valdemarson/Hilden) Mattias Osbäck: v, Manka Sedenberg: g, Anders Waldemarsson: b, Hempo Hildén: d Karlskrona - A shortlived project which only resulted in some killer demos! The members have also appeared in bands like Trash, Baltimoore, Locomotive Breath, The Bones, John Norum Band, Silver Seraph etc.

10. ZOOM CLUB Walking On Stilts (5.05) (Music: Hermansson-Stark-Hujanen/Lyrics: Hermansson) Peter Hermansson: v/d, Janne Stark: g, Micke Hujanen: b Stockholm/Nyhamnsläge - Peter (220 Volt, Talisman, John Norum) and Janne (Overdrive, Locomotive Breath, Grand Design, Constancia) met in 2010, through their common love of seventies hard rock and especially bands like Sir Lord Baltimore, Mountain and Budgie. Hujanen (AB/CD) joined the subsequent year. Around forty songs are written and ready, but nothing has been released, yet.

11. RAWBURT Psycho Man (3.28) (Music: Hansson/Lyrics: Jansson-Hansson) Stefano Marchesini: v, Robert Hansson: g, Jörgen Raneström: b, Jörgen Tjusling: d Göteborg - After having released two great albums with Human Race, Robert made some (more or less strange) solo recordings. Then came silence. Until Rawburt was born. The band has recorded several outstanding demos so far.

12. MONICA MAZE BAND Eyes Of The Living (4.34) (Music+Lyrics: Larsson/Egberg/af Klintberg/Svärd) Monica Larsson: v, Pontus Norgren: g, Pontus Egberg: b, Petter Svärd: d Stockholm - After Great King Rat disbanded and before he went solo, guitarist Pontus Norgren replaced Pontus af Klintberg in this highly interesting band, also featuring bassist Egberg (ex-Lion’s Share), now in The Poodles and outstanding singer Monica Larsson. The band recorded two excellent demos, but unfortunately nothing more came out of this.

13. STRAITJACKETS Stripped To The Bone (4.27) (Music+Lyrics: Seppenen) Mattias Wellhag: v, Ulrich Seppenen: g, Stefan Karlsson: g, Henrik Lundberg: b, Joakim Sandberg: d Skövde/Trollhättan - The band started out as Glam Slam, who were featured on the Rockbox compilation. They later became Straitjackets and recorded an outstanding, still unreleased, album. After this they became Booster and recorded yet an unreleased album. Lundberg (ex-Masquerade) and Wellhag have also released an album as House Of Heavy, while Seppänen and Karlsson are now souther heavy rockers Rebel Road.

This is the third and, by far, the biggest encyclopedia of Swedish hard rock and heavy metal - ever!
