Progressive U.K. Record Labels
Do you collect original UK vinyl records? Do you hunt for progressive acts from the ’60s or ’70s? Spending money on mint records on legendary labels such as Deram, Harvest or Regal Zonophone? Then this is indeed the book for you...
To ensure a collectable record´s value, it is important to have it in mint condition, but if it´s also a verified first pressing it will more likely hold or increase its value over time. Usually sellers of original records claim that their records are first pressings without having any kind of proof. Finally, now you don’t have to guess anymore, you can just compare your copy with the hundreds of colour reference pictures of labels and covers, and find out if you have an original pressing or not. The LP chapters include incredibly detailed information about each LP: label version, type of cover, type of inner sleeve, inserts, matrix numbers and also the value of the record. There are also feature pages for ”special” LPs that include posters or have gimmick covers. The chapters about singles include information about the record labels and the paper sleeves.
LABELOGRAPHY VOLUME 2
It covers all singles, EPs and LPs from the very start in 1966 up until 1980 for Deram, Harvest and Regal Zonophone, three of the most important British progressive record labels - all with names that make us serious record collectors shiver with excitement...
Progressive U.K. Record Labels
Labelography Volume 2 is the second book from well-respected researcher Jan Pettersson who earned lots of appreciation with his debut book, »Labelography - The Major U.K. Record Labels«, covering the seven U.K. major record labels and their original pressings. This, his second book, continues in the same style and ambition but now in glorious colour.
Labelography Volume 2 is not written about any specific artists, it’s written about the record labels which means that any artist or record on the three labels are all covered here in one single book. This meticulously researched book is intended as a field guide and should be as essential to bring to a record shop or a record fair as a book about birds when you go out bird watching. It’s also an essential tool when buying or selling rare progressive records on eBay or other internet sites. Fully illustrated in colour. 320 pages.

A First Pressing Identification Guide for Deram, Harvest, Regal Zonophone — Singles, EPs and LPs 1966 - 1980 Jan Pettersson
About the Author Jan Pettersson (born 1965) lives in Uppsala, Sweden. He started collecting records in the ‘70s, but his interest for British pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s first developed in the ‘90s when he moved together with his fiancé – a dedicated Beatles fan. As time went by, Jan’s record collection has grown larger and now contains most of the singles, EPs and LPs of the famous British bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Jan works with sales and applications support at a chemistry company. This is his second book.

How was a record label printed? In order to understand what kind of information you can use to date records by looking at the labels, it is important to know how they were printed. On the following pages you can see the steps used to print a copy of “Hold Me Tight”/“Let’s Move and Groove Together” by Johnny Nash, RZ 3010. The pictures of the steps illustrated here have been made with an edited picture of the single.
(Left) First, a plain blue label was printed on a sheet of paper.
(Right) Secondly, the perimeter prints and logos were added. The labels were then stored until they were needed for a specific record.
15
(Right) Finally, the information specific for that partiÂcular record was printÂed. Differences in the size of the print and how condensed it is are due to different printers used, not because of different pressings. Sometimes even the print of the A and B side labels of the same record can look different in this respect.
(Left) When a record was pressed, the label was attached to the vinyl record. The pressing markings were made by the pressing equipment and also the centre cut-outs, if a push-out centre was made.
16
The centres of the Decca pressed singles All singles found have round push-out centres except Patrick D. Martin’s “I Like ‘lectric Motors”/“Time”, DM R 431, which can be found with solid centres. Any other exceptions are license pressings or later re-issues. Two different types of pressing rings at the centre of the single can be found. Singles until DM 360 have a wide pressing ring a few millimeters from the rim of the push-out centre (type A). From DM 362 there is also a version where the pressing ring is about 4 millimeters from the spindle hole (type B).
(Above) Pressing ring type A. Single pressed by Decca for the Deram DM series. Note the pressing ring on the centre, typical for singles released before August 1972. Note also the wide space between the centre and the rest of the label, typical of a Decca pressing.
(Left) Pressing ring type B. Single pressed by Decca for the Deram DM series after August 1972. Note the pressing ring on the centre.

Deram re-issue singles Some singles were re-issued with solid centres and pale light brown print. This was probably done in the ‘80s. There are also singles with orange and black labels. These are a part of the “Demand Performance” series of re-issues.

Deram picture sleeves Two singles in the DM series – DM R 431 and DM R 432 – were released in picture sleeves, both in the autumn of 1979.

DN/SDN 14
(Above) Egg’s “Egg”, DN/SDN 14, released in April 1970. The first pressing of the album had a large black sticker on the backside of the cover to correct the track listing. When the cover was printed, side two of the album contained “Symphony No. 2” with the tracks Movement 1, 2, 3 and 4. Egg had used music composed by Stravinsky on “Movement 3”. Following legal wrangles this track had to be removed and was exchanged with “Blane”. No regular copies with “Movement 3” on the cover (without the sticker covering it) or on the label have been found. The sleeve is of type D, made by Moore & Matthes Ltd. and has a mono/stereo hole on the back. The plant stamper is of type C, the label is of type Deram LPs #17 (mono) or #18 (stereo) and the inner sleeve is of type B (mono) or C (stereo). Value (mono): 8
