About the Author Jan Pettersson (born 1965) lives in Uppsala, Sweden. He started collecting records in the ‘70s, but his interest for British pop music of the ‘60s and ‘70s first developed in the ‘90s when he moved together with his fiancé – a dedicated Beatles fan. As time went by, Jan’s record collection has grown larger and now contains most of the singles, EPs and LPs of the famous British bands of the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Jan works with sales and applications support at a chemistry company. This is his second book.

How was a record label printed?

In order to understand what kind of information you can use to date records by looking at the labels, it is important to know how they were printed. On the following pages you can see the steps used to print a copy of “Hold Me Tight”/“Let’s Move and Groove Together” by Johnny Nash, RZ 3010. The pictures of the steps illustrated here have been made with an edited picture of the single.

(Left) First, a plain blue label was printed on a sheet of paper.

(Right) Secondly, the perimeter prints and logos were added. The labels were then stored until they were needed for a specific record.

(Right) Finally, the information specific for that parti­cular record was print­ed. Differences in the size of the print and how condensed it is are due to different printers used, not because of different pressings.

Sometimes even the print of the A and B side labels of the same record can look different in this respect.

(Left) When a record was pressed, the label was attached to the vinyl record.

The pressing markings were made by the pressing equipment and also the centre cut-outs, if a push-out centre was made.

The centres of the Decca pressed singles All singles found have round push-out centres except Patrick D. Martin’s “I Like ‘lectric Motors”/“Time”, DM R 431, which can be found with solid centres. Any other exceptions are license pressings or later re-issues. Two different types of pressing rings at the centre of the single can be found.

Singles until DM 360 have a wide pressing ring a few millimeters from the rim of the push-out centre (type A). From DM 362 there is also a version where the pressing ring is about 4 millimeters from the spindle hole (type B).

Deram re-issue singles Some singles were re-issued with solid centres and pale light brown print. This was probably done in the ‘80s. There are also singles with orange and black labels. These are a part of the “Demand Performance” series of re-issues.

They are often sold as first pressings on eBay by sellers who do not know exactly what they are selling.

The first pressing of the album had a large black sticker on the backside of the cover to correct the track listing. When the cover was printed, side two of the album contained “Symphony No. 2” with the tracks Movement 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Egg had used music composed by Stravinsky on “Movement 3”. Following legal wrangles this track had to be removed and was exchanged with “Blane”. No regular copies with “Movement 3” on the cover (without the sticker covering it) or on the label have been found.

The sleeve is of type D, made by Moore & Matthes Ltd. and has a mono/stereo hole on the back.

The plant stamper is of type C, the label is of type Deram LPs #17 (mono) or #18 (stereo) and the inner sleeve is of type B (mono) or C (stereo).
