Prentice Institute Research Affiliate, Sharon Yanicki completed her Ph.D. in Nursing at University of Alberta.

Dr. Brenda Leung, ND, PhD, Epidemiologist and Naturopathic Doctor Dr. Leung is an Assistant Professor and the Emmy Droog Chair in Complementary and Alternative Health Care in the Faculty of Health Sciences. Her research has examined the role of prenatal nutrition on maternal mood and child development, the importance of pregnancy and birth cohort studies. She is currently on the steering committee of the Canada-India Maternal-Infant Health Collaborative (CIMIHC), a network of academics, clinicians, government officials and community members from across Canada, India, China, etc. The goal of this global collaboration, beginning in the Indian state of Odisha, is to improve maternal-newborn outcomes at a community level, in response to local priorities through local values.

World Water Day Celebrated March 22 Prentice Institute Research Affiliate, Dr Henning Bjornlund’s research focuses on how communities with limited water resources can make do with the water they have. He examines how different sectors of the community perceive that available water should be shared between competing uses, especially how the irrigation sector can contribute to meeting future demand while minimizing socioeconomic impact. Centennial Award from the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta as the organization celebrates its 100th year Jean Harrowing is an inspiration for registered nurses around the world. Her research in Africa and the Caribbean brought registered nurses to the policy table by getting them involved in HIV research and expanding their capacity to provide care to HIV patients. Jean is dedicated to engaging nursing students in global health and community development. She leads a four-week trip to Malawi where students can interact with people from a variety of backgrounds. Jean continues to seek ways to incorporate caring for diverse populations into nursing curricula. Jean has significantly contributed to registered nursing education in Alberta by serving on the Nursing Education Program Approval Board (NEPAB) for 10 consecutive years.

Two of these chairs include our Research Affiliates; Tier 1 Dr. Reginald Bibby, (Reappointment July 1, 2016 to December 31, 2018) is a respected sociologist whose research is focused on monitoring social trends in Canada through a series of national surveys of adults and teenagers. His areas of specialty include religion and youth.

Tier 2 Dr. Bonnie Lee, Tier II Board of Governors Research Chair in Healthy Futures (July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019) Dr. Lee is a registered marriage and family therapist and has spent the past decade leading a program of research in developing a model of Congruence Couples Therapy for problem gamblers.

Divorce in sub-Saharan Africa: Are Unions Becoming Less Stable?

Divorce is one of the main drivers of family instability in sub-Saharan Africa. Using data from 101 Demographic and Health Surveys and novel estimation techniques, we 1) provide the first systematic estimates of divorce in 33 countries; 2) assess trends in divorce in 20 countries; and 3) investigate the key country-level correlates of divorce both across and within countries. Despite considerable geographic variation, our estimates show that divorce is common in most countries. Contrary to expectations, however, we find no evidence that divorce is increasing. Instead, divorce has been either stable or declining in recent decades. Urbanization and female employment are associated with higher levels of divorce, while age at first marriage and female education correspond to lower rates.

These findings have implications for current and future family dynamics in sub-Saharan Africa.
