It’s Wine Time

Our Assisted Living residents got a treat recently when we hosted a wine tasting party in their piano room.

Residents were given samples of unknown wines to taste so they can decide which ones they preferred. And, of course we had cheese to cleanse the palate after each wine.

Cheers! u

Herb Society visits Aberdeen Heights

on.

Did you know how much you can do with herbs? It’s really quite fascinating, as we found out when the Webster Groves Herd Society visited Aberdeen Heights.

They discussed the different types of herbs and how to grow them. They also put together a spread for the residents to try using the herbs they talked about – it included mint water, boursin cheese, and lavender cookies.

Everyone had a great time learning about all the different way to use herbs. u

Did you know? Father’s Day was first celebrated in 1910

Father’s Day is officially a modern holiday – it wasn’t under 1972 when it became a nationwide holiday in the United States, but it was first celebrated on June 19, 1910.

As you may imagine, the inspiration for Father’s Day was Mother’s Day but it was tougher to convince people of its importance. According to history.com, one florist said “fathers haven’t the same sentimental appeal that mothers have.” It wasn’t until a Washington

woman, who was one of six children raised by her father – a widower –decided to honor fathers. She drummed up support from local churches, the YMCA, and shopkeepers and Washington State was the first to celebrate Father’s Day.

But it also came with controversy. Many men called it a commercial gimmick and scoffed at the “sentimental attempts to domesticate manliness…” During World War II, advertisers began to

celebrate the day as a way to honor American troops in the war. And finally, Richard Nixon signed a proclamation to make it a federal holiday in 1972.

Today, the United States honors fathers on the third Sunday in June. Economist estimate that Americans spend more than $1 billion each year on gifts. Some other countries celebrate it in March, on St. Joseph’s Day, a traditional Catholic holiday.

Ceramicsartcouldbeanewhobby

It wasn’t too hard for our Assisted Living residents to get the hang of painting some beautiful ceramics. Afterall, Suzie is a wonderful teacher.

And this is becoming a new hobby for some. Once a month, they paint the ceramics they like, Susan takes them home, fires them in the kiln and then brings them back for the residents. We love seeing how proud they are when they get the final product. u

Health Center residents drum to their own beat

Our Music Therapist Matt took around a drum and had our health care center residents each create their own beat.

As we found out, everyone was a little different. Some had a slower beat, some faster, some were louder than others. But in music therapy, there’s no wrong beat. Everyone loved hearing what the others created. u

Dave is great at the intricate painting. Jane is painting a beautiful heart-shaped box. Rosalie is surprised how easy this is. Jeanne’s beat may be quiet but it’s beautiful. Joan loves the beat the Don is creating.

Aberdeen Heights shares customer service survey responses

Aberdeen Heights continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys. Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between April 2022 and March 2023, Aberdeen Heights residents and their families gave the community high scores in

demonstrating dignity and respect, cleanliness, and safety and security.

Many said they would recommend Aberdeen Heights to others. “I’d tell them it’s a very nice place to live, and the staff is very friendly,” said one resident.

We greatly value the opinions of our residents and their representatives about the care and services we provide, and we encourage them to participate honestly when contacted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. All state and federal confidentiality laws are met in Pinnacle’s service. u
