celebrates Art is Ageless® calendar reveal and announces call for entries for this year’s exhibit

Parsons Presbyterian Manor is seeking artists for the annual Art is Ageless® juried exhibit April 1 – 3, 2024.

Entries of artistic works will be accepted from any area artist who is 65 years of age or over to exhibit and/or compete for an opportunity to be featured in the 2025 Art is Ageless calendar.

For the competition, works must be completed after age 65 and in the past five years (since January 2019). There are nine categories, as well as designations of amateur or professional. Entries are due to Parsons Presbyterian Manor, 3501 Dirr Ave., by 5 p.m. March 28.

The community celebrated last year’s exhibit and competition with a calendar reveal party back in December. Artists were on hand to display their art works and sign calendars.

The Art is Ageless® program encourages Presbyterian Manor residents and other area seniors to express their creativity through its art annual competition.

For entry forms and more information, contact Crystal Packard at 620-421-1450 or cpackard@pmma.org, or visit ArtIsAgeless.org. u

New assisted living director enjoys travel, caring for others

Kayla Treiber joined the team at Parsons Presbyterian Manor in January as the new assisted living director.

Kayla was a Registered Nurse Case Manager with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, a role she held for six years. She also worked as a director of nursing at another area retirement community.

In her spare time, Kayla loves spending time with her husband and two daughters, especially traveling across the United States and abroad.

“We really enjoy going on cruises with our family and friends,” she said.

Volunteer work is also in the cards for the Treiber family.

“My sister and I are sponsors of the St. Francis CYM Group and we strive to help youth in our parish grow in their spiritual lives,” she shared.

Treiber holds an associate of applied science in nursing from Labette Community College. u

Lois Vail

Resident Lois Vail moved to Parsons Presbyterian Manor in October of last year. She’s an accomplished artist, especially as a painter.

“I do everything from watercolors to pastels,” she shared. “I also like to do drawings.”

Vail has two daughters and one son and says she lived the country life before moving to the Manor.

“I farmed and ranched,” she recalled. “I loved feeding all my critters!”

As for life at Parsons Presbyterian Manor, Vail says it’s hard to beat.

“The staff is incredible, and the food is wonderful!” she shared.

Vail said Bingo and group exercises are two activities she loves. u

Dorothy Pallister

In December of 2022, Dorothy Pallister officially became a resident of Parsons Presbyterian Manor. Since then, she says she’s been overcome by a feeling of safety and community.

“It means a lot of me,” she said.

“All of the people are wonderful.”

She loves getting a bite to eat and taking part in the many group activities offered here.

“The food is wonderful!” she shared.

While she doesn’t do much gardening these days, we’re told Dorothy once had quite the “green thumb.”

“I used to love it,” she remembered.

Dorothy says she’s most proud of her family, including her son, Jeff, who manages the Katy Golf Club in Parsons. u

Intergenerational partnership benefits area kids, seniors at Parsons Presbyterian Manor

Thanks to a grant from the Parsons Community Foundation, a program at Parsons Presbyterian Manor is bringing kids and our seniors together.

Residents visit a local first grade classroom once each month and those area first graders return the favor by visiting the Manor.

“It helps me get through my day a little easier,” resident Marlene Swaney told local television station KSN 16 for a story on the benefits of the grant. “I’ve got grandkids but they’re little bitty.”

When the residents visit the classroom, they often read to the students, while the students partake in bingo with the residents when they make their way to the community. Grant money is used to provide books to the first-grade classroom, as well as bingo prizes. u

Parsons Presbyterian Manor shares customer service survey responses

Parsons Presbyterian Manor continues to seek customer feedback through monthly telephone surveys. Each month, residents and their representatives are randomly selected to participate in telephone satisfaction surveys conducted by Pinnacle Quality Insight.

The graphic highlights some of the survey results. All scores are given on a 5-point scale, with 5 being the highest score and 1 the lowest score. Between January 2023 and December 2023, Parsons Presbyterian Manor residents and their families gave the community perfect scores for overall satisfaction and for demonstrating dignity and respect. They also gave high scores for safety and security.

“I would tell others that it is super,” said one resident. “This is well above a five-plus.”

We greatly value the opinions of our residents and their representatives about the care and services we

provide, and we encourage them to participate honestly when contacted by Pinnacle Quality Insight. All state and federal confidentiality laws are met in Pinnacle’s service. u
