MARCH 2024

Rolla Presbyterian Manor Marks

50th Anniversary in 2024

50 years, in terms of anniversaries, is a big one.

For a marriage, it marks the most special of milestones.

At Rolla Presbyterian Manor, our celebration of 50 years in 2024 is equally special. Since opening our doors in December of 1973 and watching our first residents move in during the early part of 1974, a lot has changed. The one constant, however, has been our commitment to the Presbyterian Manors mission. Providing care and compassion to seniors is at the heart of our Christian mission.

50years – continued from page 1

“There have been so many changes and advances over the course of the 42 years I’ve been here,” said executive director Ann Caudill. “We’re proud of our reputation as a place where your loved one is going to get the very best care.”

Caudill isn’t the only member of the team who’s been around for decades.

“There’s something special here,” she said. “We have team members who’ve celebrated 30-, 20- and 10-year anniversaries with us. At a time when people job hop, we’ve managed to keep a lot of our folks around.”

While Rolla Presbyterian Manor remains a trusted source for care, Caudill says maintaining that reputation is a daily commitment.

“We continue to strive to be the best at what we do,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of challenges in recent years with the pandemic, yet we’ve remained steadfast in our commitments. I don’t see that changing.” u

Keep your brain healthy as you age

Our body goes through a lot of changes as we age – aches and pains are more noticeable, our mobility and flexibility may suffer, and parts of our brain start to shrink.

Studies show that two out of three Americans experience some level of cognitive impairment at around age 70. This doesn’t always mean Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, but it could mean changes in our memory, our learning skills, and our thinking abilities.

So, what can you do? While we can’t stop all factors that affect our brain health, we can take steps to slow down mental decline. Here are six steps you can start taking today:

1. Exercise Regularly

Research shows that people over 60 who did 30 minutes of moderate exercise, five days a week lowered their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other memory problems. Moderate intensity exercise includes a brisk walk, water aerobics, or dancing for fitness.

2. Learn a new skill

Games, puzzles, and brain exercises are all useful, but learning a new skill can really activate the brain and improve memory. Think about something you’re always wanted to learn – a new language, playing music, a new craft or how to use new technology.

3. Eat healthy foods

People who eat a healthy and balanced diet less likely to experience cognitive decline. Think fruits, vegetables, fish, plant-based proteins, and nuts and avoid processed foods.

4. Drink your water

Besides healthy foods, be sure to stay hydrated. Water removes toxins from the brain while also carrying nutrients to it. It can help you improve your concentration and focus.

5. Get your zzz’s

Quality sleep is key to keeping the brain functioning at its best. If you’re having a hard time, talk to your doctor. Help your brain and body get ready for sleep by developing a bedtime routine, going to bed around the same time each night, and keeping electronics out of the bedroom.

6. Stay social

Strong social relationships are associated with lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia while isolation increases that risk. Our brain may change as we age but that doesn’t we’re helpless. The steps outline above can make a significant difference in keeping your brain sharp for as long as possible. u
