Creating a comfortable environment
Environmental services director Shawn Bretton’s work reaches across just about every part of the Salina Presbyterian Manor community.
Yet whether it’s repairing a faulty heating or cooling system, fixing a broken pipe, or installing a custom shower head, Bretton said his team understands that their work is all about the residents.
“I like knowing that what we do makes a difference in the residents’ lives,” Shawn said. “We make sure their home is everything they want it to be. I’d want someone to do that for my parents, grandparents, or me, later on in life. We try to do everything we can to make sure they can be as happy here as they were at the home they were in for 40-50 years.”
Patient thankful for recommended PATH®
This past summer I underwent two knee surgeries, and my loving daughter Jenni, Director of Giving at Salina Presbyterian Manor, talked me into going to the manor’s PATH® (Post Acute to Home) rehabilitation stay.
The therapy department is second-tonone and very professional. Staff was able to build up my strength and get me from a wheelchair to completely independent with my walker. Jodi, Ashley, and Danielle encouraged and pushed me daily to work hard so I could return home. The nursing team was so kind and compassionate, and of course I must mention my favorites Tierra, Cassandra and Olivia.
For individual residents that can be mounting a television at just the right height, or making sure furniture is put in the right place. But behind the scenes, it also includes making sure systems are working well for staff and residents.
“In addition to our main big building, we also have 34 duplexes and are building new villas,” Shawn said. “We’re always expanding and adding on. Amongst all that, we manage the heating and cooling for 200 residents. We’re always making sure everything is working right - and that the water runs, the drains drain, and the lights turn on.”
His staff works hand-in-hand with other staff members to ensure an environment that is comfortable and as close to home as possible.
“We do everything we can to make sure everyone can do their jobs to serve the residents,” Shawn said. “We can’t do what we do without the staff doing what they do.”
When he’s not at work, Shawn enjoys travel, music, and movies - particularly scary movies.
“My favorite movie of all time is John Carpenter’s Halloween,” Shawn said. “I loved the mystery behind it, and I was probably the right age when I saw it and have been a fan ever since. Halloween is my favorite time of year. In fact, my wife and I got married - we had a Hallowedding - and we met each other working in a Haunted House.” u
My favorite part of the whole experience was meeting the other residents that were on PATH and watching them continue to work hard and accomplish their goals. We all encouraged each other to do our best and I remember saying to myself “if they can do it, so can I.”
As my final day approached and my rehab was complete, I was overwhelmed with “tears of joy” as the staff lined up all the way down the hall to clap for my accomplishments and wish me well as I returned home.
I recommend Salina Presbyterian Manor for the great care that I received during my PATH stay.

Quilting provides a lifetime of warmth
Resident Ruby McBee has been "busy like a bee" working on this beautiful full-size hand-stitched quilt.
Ruby’s passion for quilting has warmed the hearts of many friends and family members over the years. This creation took approximately ninemonths to complete. If you look closely you can see she has used material with a "bee" on it.
Ruby turned 100 this past October and she decided with the completion of this quilt she will be retiring her needles.
Thanks Ruby for sharing your beautiful work with us.u

Cradling a long-held joy
Jean Hamilton, a resident at Salina Presbyterian Manor, has been a doll collector most of her life. Between Jean and her family, they have acquired 2,424 dolls from around all the world. There is nothing Jean enjoys more (besides quilting) than to share the journey and story of each and every one of the dolls she has collected.
Recently Jean and her son Ralph made a trip to Shawnee Mission to the Doll Cradle with a van full of precious cargo. Jean decided it was time to share her love of collecting with others by donating close to 2,000 of her dolls. Be sure to make some time to stop by and reminisce with Jean about her collection. u
