Artist’s experiment with new medium an award-winning success Linda Kobs’ career as an artist has taken many shapes and forms over the years and has utilized a wide variety of mediums. “My first love was oil painting,” said Linda. “Then I went into acrylics which was a lot Linda Kobs faster because oil paints take so long to dry,” said Linda. Recently Linda decided to mix things up yet again by experimenting with gouache, an opaque, water-based paint that’s similar to watercolor. “I just liked the vibrant colors I got with it, and it was fun to use something different,” said Linda. One of the first paintings Linda created with gouache was a piece entitled, “Just Hanging Out,” which is this year’s Art is Ageless® best of show winner in the amateur category. She entered through Manor of the Plains in Dodge City, Kan. Linda began painting back in the late ‘80s but put it on hold to raise four children and Linda Kobs, 81 - Dodge City, Kan. | Just Hanging Out, Painting work as a community librarian. “After I retired, I finally had the time to their creativity—and it’s nice to recognize them “I like to paint wildlife, animals and birds— pursue it again,” said Linda. “It’s kind of a in that way,” said Linda. that’s what really appeals to me, and I have a hobby, I’m busy with everything but I really And Linda says, for her, that recognition lot of sparrows and bird feeders in my yard— enjoy that creative outlet.” goes a long way. it’s just something in my daily environment,” Part of what keeps Linda busy is her life on “I feel very special and grateful for the said Linda. the family farm. recognition, it helps inspire me to keep it on,” Linda has had the honor of being featured “We’ve been here about 57 years, so I have said Linda. in the Art is Ageless calendar in the past and a lot of responsibility—a lot of yard work.” So, what’s next? believes it can play an important role in the But it’s those surroundings that often inspire lives of seniors. “I’m working on a longhorn steer with a Linda’s work. windmill. Western Kansas roots inspire artist’s latest Art is Ageless® win John King is no newcomer to Art is Ageless®. The Emporia-based painter had a piece of his work featured on the cover of the competition’s 2017 calendar and has a “whole book of ribbons” to show for his John King past involvement. This year was different, though, as John’s painting, “Rodeo Cowboy” was named best of show in the professional division. “It was quite an honor,” said John. The painting was inspired by John’s childhood in Dodge City and the long-running Dodge City Days Rodeo. In fact, “Rodeo Cowboy” was originally painted for the rodeo’s western heritage art show where it also took home an award. “I tried to capture the essence of the man over the beast scenario, which I think conveys pretty well in that painting,” said John. But don’t pigeonhole John’s art by this one piece—his subject varies greatly from one painting to the next. “I paint whatever I feel like painting basically,” said John. And he’s been doing it for a long time. “I’ve painted ever since I can remember,” said John. “I painted wild sweatshirts in high school and college and a lot of murals for free dance tickets and free beer—which worked out well,” said John. It was after retiring from Emporia State University, when John and his wife built a

John King, 73 - Emporia, Kan. | Rodeo Cowboy, Painting small studio in their basement that his career really picked up steam, though. “I paint five or six days a week religiously, from about 9 in the morning to 2 in the afternoon. My dog comes downstairs and goes around my easel and tells me it’s time to be done,” said John. As for Art is Ageless, John is just grateful for the opportunity to enter through Emporia Presbyterian Manor in Emporia, Kan. “I appreciate PMMA® for putting on this whole endeavor for retired people and people of my age,” said John. “I’ve seen a

lot of people retire that didn’t have a thing to do and they didn’t last a whole lot longer because there wasn’t any reason to get up in the morning.” And, whether it is through Art is Ageless or just for their own enjoyment, John encourages other seniors to continue to express themselves creatively. “I think it’s a great endeavor for anybody fixing to retire—or already retired—to get involved and work, whether it be writing, singing, painting, drawing, sculpture … anything to keep your mind and body busy,” said John.

Craig’s “Steampunk Airship #2,” is a great representation of steampunk—a subgenre of science fiction that incorporates retro and futuristic technology with aesthetics inpired by 19th-century industrial, steam-powered machinery.
