“Sitting in the cold on a park bench during the night I asked God to please take me.”
—JACK CLAIBORNE
Jack and Karen Claiborne’s first date was very unconventional and involved doing illegal drugs together. Their lives mirrored each other through homelessness and longstanding substance abuse. Many years later, the Claiborne’s, now residents at The Village of Mill Creek in Battle Creek, have completely turned their lives around and dedicate themselves to giving more than they receive in the world.
In 2023 the Claiborne’s faced a tough fork in the road and REALLY needed your help. Your caring donation to the PVM Foundation gave Jack and Karen a new home they could truly afford and let them continue their work of serving the homeless population in the Battle Creek community. THANK YOU!
Read on to learn about the Claiborne’s uphill journey to The Village of Mill Creek. You will be inspired by their story of turning around their life, and all the good that resulted.
Jack and Karen grew up in different parts of the country, Jack in Ohio, and Karen in Florida. However, their paths were very similar. Both were longstanding drug users and lived a street life. Several times they both found themselves homeless.
One bitterly cold winter night Jack reflected on being homeless, “I just left a drug recovery center and went right back to using. I could not beat this addiction. Sitting in the cold on a park bench during the night, I asked God to please take me.”
After that evening, with encouragement from a friend, Jack entered a substance abuse program at the local VA hospital in Battle Creek. Still in the grips of substance abuse, he met Karen. “Not a great first date, but we did drugs together,” states Karen.
After a few years of using together and constantly struggling, Karen said things needed to change. “I am tired of being sick and tired.” From that point on, they stayed off drugs and vowed to give back. They were able to make some life saving changes.
Both Jack and Karen found steady employment and joined a local church. They met friends and started going to a local homeless day center to serve meals. For 20 years now, the Claiborne’s have been serving meals at the day center. “We’d pay for the meals, prepare the meals, and all the rest,” says Jack.
The quality of the meals kept getting better with the help of fundraisers and donations. “We started out serving hot dogs but then we graduated to wonderful home cooked meals. Even steak dinners during the holidays! For years we had taken from so many and now it was our time to give back.”
During this time, Jack and Karen started living at a local apartment complex. The living conditions at their apartment kept getting worse. “The building was not being maintained, it was unsafe and the grass had not been cut in 9 months,” says Karen. With limited financial resources and no local options, they were very concerned that they may end up on the streets again.
At this point, Jack and Karen were desperate. They were facing having to leave Battle Creek, the community they love and have given so much back to. Fortunately, a friend referred them to The Village of Mill Creek, one of PVM’s affordable senior communities.
Luckily, Jack was an Army Veteran. PVM has a Veteran’s preference, which allowed the Claiborne’s to move into The Village of Mill Creek immediately. Without this preference the Claiborne’s would be looking at no less than a one-year wait. A wait time they really did not have.
“This is the first place in my life I truly feel safe. I love it here! We don’t have to worry about housing anymore”
—JACK CLAIBORNE
JACK AND KAREN CLAIBORNE, PICTURED IN THEIR YOUNGER YEARS, HAVE TURNED THEIR LIVES AROUND AND NOW DEDICATE THEMSELVES TO HELPING OTHERS.
They moved in right away. “This is the first place in my life I truly feel safe. I love it here! We don’t have to worry about housing anymore” states Jack.
Now, living at The Village of Mill Creek, the Claiborne’s have recruited new volunteers to help at the homeless day center. As a bonus, they’re working to establish a monthly meal program for the Mill Creek residents. A holiday party/celebration is already in the works!
Today, the Claiborne’s are living their best lives, and giving more of themselves to so many in need. You, the donor, were there when they needed help. Thank you! With your donation, PVM will continue to serve more people just like Jack and Karen

YOUR DONATION IN ACTION TRIP OF A LIFETIME—NOAH’S ARK
PVM resident activities take many forms- from art classes, baseball games, parties, dances, speakers, to even once in a lifetime experiences. Residents of Our Saviour’s Manor of Westland, and Hartford Village of Detroit got an experience they will not forget. All thanks to your thoughtful donation. In September, 31 residents traveled to Kentucky to visit the Ark Encounter and see the replica Noah’s Ark. Their trip included admission to The Ark, coach bus travel, one night stay, and all their meals. This entire amazing trip was fully paid for out of donations from individuals like you to the PVM Foundation.
About 50% of the PVM residents that traveled to The Ark had not been on a trip in at least five years. “I heard so many residents raving about the trip. The word “wow” was heard over and over again,” said Graziella Bruner, the Administrator at both Villages.
Social isolation as we age is a real issue. Resident activities bring people together and bring joy to their lives. A prime example is the Noah’s Ark trip.
The Christmas season is a time for giving back. Thank you for offering PVM residents wonderful experiences year around through the support of resident activities.
RESIDENTS OF OUR SAVIOUR’S MANOR AND HARTFORD VILLAGE ENJOYED A MEMORABLE TRIP TO THE ARK ENCOUNTER IN KENTUCKY, MADE POSSIBLE BY YOUR DONATIONS TO THE PVM FOUNDATION.
Emergencies don’t take a holiday.
Every day, a vulnerable older adult is just one emergency away from being forced to choose between overcoming a crisis or paying for food and heat. This is a choice no one should have to make.
Luckily, you can help!
When you give today, your donation will provide immediate assistance to an older adult facing an emergency. Imagine the peace of mind knowing that if an unexpected event occurs, you have a safety net to fall back on.
James, a retired Navy Veteran, experienced excruciating pain in his side and was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to remove his appendix. After a successful surgery, James’s fear for his health was quickly replaced by a new fear. How will he pay for his medical bills? Even as a Navy Veteran with VA benefits and Medicare, James faces an out-of-pocket expense of over $1,400, leaving him wondering how he will afford his next meal.
James is not alone, and countless older adults face a similar burden each and every day.
In 2024, over 130 older adults received emergency support from the generosity of donors like you. While emergencies kept coming— funds ran out and unfortunately, so did their luck.
Your gift today helps make sure an older adult won’t go to bed hungry, has heat in their home, or the life-saving medications they need.
You alone can ensure that no older adult is turned away when they need help the most.
I want to make a difference for an older adult, and support the Resident Emergency Help Fund!

I WANT TO HELP FUTURE PVM OLDER ADULTS THAT I MIGHT NEVER MEET, BUT STILL NEED MY HELP.
—JACKIE DIXON-BEATY
GIVING FROM YOUR HEART
Ten years ago, Jackie was asked by a friend to serve on The Village of St. Martha’s Board of Directors, in Detroit. A few weeks later, that same friend asked her to join the PVM Foundation Gala Steering Committee. “I said yes, but I was very skeptical. That changed quickly when I saw the good work that was being done and all the love given to the older adults.”
“PVM has my heart now. So, I started to look at my assets and find a way to provide more support to PVM. I have a commercial annuity. PVM will receive a portion of it, but so will my family. A perfect mix! I trust PVM to spend it wisely.”
GO PVM & GO LIONS! JACKIE DIXON-BEATY ENJOYED THE PVM LUNCHEON TO SAY THANKS EVENT AT FORD FIELD.
At her designation, Jackie’s legacy at PVM is directly connected to The Village of St. Martha’s. Jackie split her gift, and a portion of her donation after her passing will go to The Village of St. Martha’s and a portion to the PVM Foundation to use where the needs are the greatest in the future. Each PVM Legacy Society Member can designate their gift to any Village or program inside of PVM.
The next PVM Gala is on October 24, 2025. When you attend, you will see Jackie front and center. She is one of the PVM Gala Co-Chairs. She continues to give back!
The PVM Foundation warmly invites you to join Jackie in giving from your heart to help future older adults. Remember, anyone can make their lasting mark. PVM warmly welcomes and greatly appreciates legacy gifts of all sizes. See how you can join the PVM Legacy Society Visit pvmf.org/legacygiving

NO MORE DIGITAL DIVIDE AT PVM VILLAGES
Having two children of our own, it seems like Christmas gifts in the Miller house have been more and more centered around technology as the kids get older.
I am not sure PVM residents want or get a technology present under their Christmas tree. Modern technology and all it can offer still has a long way to go for older adults to fully opt in. The expense and learning curve to use modern technology products and services can cause a digital divide with many older adults.
PVM is focused on minimizing the digital divide. With the help of your donation, many of The PVM Villages now have complementary Wi-Fi throughout the entire building, and more are in the works. Additionally, computer tablets have been provided to residents and tele-health suites/computer labs have been constructed.
Because of your donation, more PVM residents are using technology. So many are seeing the benefits from video calls with grandchildren, using Amazon for shopping, to streaming their favorite movies and tv shows. They also feel connected and not left out. Your donation offers limitless possibilities for each resident. It’s like a Christmas present unwrapped every day.
Thank you for always caring about older adults. You are helping them feel connected and included.
Merry Christmas and here’s to a wonderful New Year!
