Words from Lisa Jeli HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear PHS Community, Thank you for taking the time to explore Presidio Hill School’s 2022-2023 Impact Report. This report covers the ‘22 -’23 school year’s undertakings and philanthropic achievements. Supported by our incredibly generous community members, we look forward to many more successes in our 106th year! Whether you’re a current parent or guardian, or have fond memories of your time here, I know that Presidio Hill School holds a special place in all our hearts, and we’re committed to it thriving well into the future. Our theme for the 2023-2024 school year, “Between Maple and Cherry,” is a testament to our unique location and all of the benefits it affords our students. Our location speaks to our history, the changes that San Francisco has seen over the last 106 years, and the many ways PHS has grown and adapted to offer a foundational educational experience. It also offers a sense of place and purpose to generations of students.

“Between Maple and Cherry,” there’s a world of activity. Within our walls, our curious and caring students experience a supportive community and lessons that activate their curiosity and deepest learning. Our dedicated faculty and staff engage in ongoing professional growth, fostering academic explorations, promoting social justice learning, and nurturing healthy relationships—all while benefiting from our proximity to the Presidio’s natural beauty and historical significance. And, our thoughtful and generous families find a second home – swinging their children across the monkey bars, joining classes for Presidio explorations, or enjoying a coffee and conversation with fellow parents and guardians during Friday Coffee. Just as our physical space has seen recent renovations and updates to better serve our students, faculty/staff, and families, our recently completed Strategic Plan aims to position PHS as a beacon of progressive education within our local community. Our location “between Maple and Cherry” references our campus location on the edge of the Presidio—a national park and historic treasure in the heart of San Francisco, as well as an incredibly vibrant classroom for all of our TK through 8th grade students. The Presidio, often referred to as our “front yard,” offers an abundance of resources and inspiration for our educational mission. As we are fortunate to enjoy our campus in close proximity to the Presidio, we are reminded of the countless opportunities and experiences that this exceptional setting affords us. We continually strive to maximize the potential of our beautiful campus and its unique surroundings, and we look forward to another year of growth, learning, and community building with all of you. We forge ahead, between Maple and Cherry, shaping a brighter future for our students. Thank you for being here with us.

Words from the Board of Trustees

as it allowed us to articulate clear priorities to ensure that future generations of young people will be able to continue to “imagine, inquire, and create” in true PHS fashion. While focused on the future, PHS’s new strategic goals are mission-driven, data-informed, and consistent with the vision and goals that have been at the crux of PHS for over a century:

NOAH BERLAND

NICOLE LAVALLEE

2022-2023 Co-Chairs

Strategic Goals: 1. Position PHS as a Leader in Progressive Education 2. Build and Strengthen Community Belonging, Values, and Shared Purpose

As we entered our 105th year, PHS embarked on a journey to ensure its strength and vitality for decades to come. Starting in late summer 2022, the Board, working through its Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) and with the guidance of governance experts Mission & Data, embarked on the first phase of Strategic Planning. The SPC (formed of teachers, administrators, and trustees) undertook a comprehensive process that was thought-provoking, exciting, and rewarding. It was illuminating as the SPC gathered and synthesized voluminous data from faculty, students, parents, alumni, and other stakeholders through surveys, focus groups, and conversations. Armed with this data and relevant internal and external trends, the SPC then engaged in the challenging yet thoughtprovoking exercise of developing and refining the key goals and strategies upon which PHS should focus to continue thriving in our ever-changing educational and geographic landscape. This effort was exciting because it confirmed what we knew instinctively – that PHS has been successfully fulfilling its mission and is headed in the right direction. Finally, this deep work was rewarding

3. Support a School Where Faculty and Staff Thrive 4. Maximize our Historic Campus, the Presidio, and the Unique City of San Francisco 5. Steward Our Programs for Another Generation of Learners Now that the full Board of Trustees has approved the Strategic Goals, we are moving into the accountability and action planning phases. This includes outlining tasks, responsibilities, and timing for executing each strategic goal and the monitoring of said execution. We have been honored to serve as co-chairs of the Board of Trustees for the past two years and are fortunate to be part of the incredible PHS community. It is with great confidence that we now pass the reins of Board leadership to Seema Dala and Jonathan Maguire to offer support to Lisa and her team as they dig deep to create an accountability and action plan that will bring life and fulfillment to PHS’s dynamic Strategic Goals.

Introducing the 2023-2024 Board of Trustees Chairs

SEEMA DALA Co-Chair, 2023-2024 I’ve been part of the PHS community since 2017. My son, Arin, is now in middle school and over the years I have enjoyed being involved as a Room Representative, volunteer, and trustee of our Board. I am privileged to serve as co-Chair of our Board of Trustees this year. In moving to the US from South Africa, it was important to us to find a school for our son that not only delivered the highest educational standards, but importantly instilled a curiosity and love for learning, a growth mindset, a strong social-emotional understanding, and in a diverse, inclusive environment that encourages a sense of belonging. From the first time I toured the PHS campus, I could see and sense how the school lives and breathes these values every day. Over the past 6 years, I have been in awe of how the incredible faculty, staff and PHS community build in our children both a love for learning and a responsibility for the world in which we live. Outside of my role at PHS, I am a Partner at Orbis Investments, a global asset management firm, and I’ve worked in the financial services industry for over 20 years in South Africa, the UK and the US. I have worked with various non-profits in the education and healthcare sectors, and most recently served as a trustee on the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, which invests in the education and development of individuals with entrepreneurial potential within Southern Africa.

JONATHAN MAGUIRE Co-Chair, 2023-2024 I grew up in the Bay Area with a strong background in progressive education, having attended nursery through middle school at Peninsula School in Menlo Park, founded by former Presidio Hill School director Josephine Duveneck in 1925. My wife, Jaimie, and I wanted the same social-emotional educational experience that I received for our daughter, and we are so thrilled that she gets to attend Presidio Hill School. It has been pure joy watching her grow and thrive at PHS. She is so enthusiastic about learning and each year her enthusiasm grows. She literally runs and skips to school each morning, and is eager to teach us what she has learned at the end of each school day. In my professional life, I work as a UI/UX and Visual Designer and have had the opportunity to contribute to large-scale design initiatives for Microsoft, BMW, Shazam, Diageo World Class, Cisco, Creative Live, and Pike Place Fish Market. I also serve as a marketing strategist and record label liaison for Amoeba Music. At PHS, I have had the pleasure to serve on the Board of Trustees, as Admission Co-Chair, and as Room Representative. It brings me joy to volunteer for admission tours, field trips, and in-classroom activities. Jaimie and I take great pride in our daughter, Jeanette, who is currently in fourth grade. Through our work on the Board, I am looking forward to fostering stronger partnerships and engagement with our community, and effectively showcase our school’s unique offerings to prospective families in order to strengthen our school’s presence, ensuring an enriching and inclusive environment for all students and families.

This year, I am excited to work closely with our Head of School, my co-Chair Jonathan, and our wonderful Board, in sustaining and strengthening our school to continue our legacy of progressive education for many decades to come. I also look forward to engaging with our current, prospective, and alumni families. 7 | IMPACT REPORT | 2022-23

2022-2023 Impact Report ANNUAL FUND IMPACT

Thank you to our generous donors who supported the Presidio Hill School Annual Fund this year. Gifts to the Annual Fund directly impact PHS students and educators by supporting our core programs and curriculum, flexible tuition for students, classroom resources, and professional development for faculty and staff. Here are just a few of the things your Annual Fund gifts made possible during the 2022-2023 school year: Planning for our Future: A Strategic Plan plays a pivotal role in the success and growth of a school. It provides a clear roadmap and direction for the institution’s future, outlining specific goals and objectives. Ultimately, it will empower PHS to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and create a thriving educational environment. This year, in consultation with the strategic planning firm, Mission & Data, we have been consolidating community input, analyzing trends and data within the feedback, and drafting goals and priorities. The final draft of the strategic plan main goals and priorities was approved by the Board of Trustees in May and we look forward to sharing the full strategic plan with you soon. The Return of Guest Speakers: One of the wonderful things about being in San Francisco is the tremendous number of experts, speakers, and performers we have available to us. We were excited to welcome a number of them to PHS this year including Lunar New Year Lion Dancers, Hip Hop for Change, Muriel the Storyteller, Tavi Hawn and Randall Leonard on Gender Identity, and Kate Bedford on Puberty and Sex Education.

8 | IMPACT REPORT | 2022-23

Partnering with Project Wayfinder: We are excited to begin this work under the leadership of our school counselor, Shannon McGilloway. Project Wayfinder is a research-based Social Emotional Learning (SEL) toolset for all ages, which had its inception at the highly regarded K-12 Innovation Lab at Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design. Professional Development for Faculty and Staff: This year, the entire PHS faculty and staff participated in professional development to solidify and improve our curriculum and professional growth around two key areas: Anti-Bias Curriculum and Social Justice Standards, and Environmental Education/Environmental Sustainability Curriculum/ Presidio Engagement. In addition to these all-school growth opportunities, individual teachers and staff members also participated in a variety of PD opportunities on a wide range of topics including (but not limited to): • Responsive Classroom, a student-centered approach to teaching and discipline that comprises a set of research- and evidence-based practices to create safe, joyful, and engagement classroom communities, • Ideas and practical strategies to increase collaboration and impactful tech use at PHS, • Fundations, a foundational literacy and phonics program, and • Values Based Leadership

PHS IMPACT

from students, families, and staff

I love PHS because everyone is nice there. When I go to school I feel happy Grade 2 classes. I especially and excited to meet my friends. And, there Waverly, are really fun like my enrichment classes in Neighborhood like Textile Arts and Makers Club. Mason Grade Two

The Skidmore / Patron Family

PHS is a wonderful community, and our kids are eager to go to school and participate. When they face an academic or social-emotional challenge, they get the support they need to navigate it, and it’s exciting to see them take pride in the strategies and frameworks they learn at school. They get the chance to collaborate within their classrooms, with older and younger kids, and with an interconnected team of creative and flexible teachers and staff. It’s exciting to see their confidence in themselves as learners and citizens grow each year.

Alexa Eurich Kindergarten Teacher

Teaching at PHS is a joy. Working with children in a progressive setting—to become readers, writers, mathematicians, artists, actors, scientists, stewards, & change makers—is such a grand endeavor. Our process together ignites the creativity of students and teachers, alike!

10 | IMPACT REPORT | 2022-23

I love coming to the Presidio, you never know what you’ll find next.

Adam Grade Six

Clara Grade One

I love having friends and getting to learn new things everyday. I love all my teachers and I love being at school.

The Lee / Fejfar Family

One of the things that sets PHS apart from other schools is the strong emphasis on connection and community. The teachers go above and beyond to understand each child’s unique strengths and challenges, creating a tailored learning experience that fosters growth and development. It is also so heartwarming to see this value in the parent-guardian community. We’ve found a close-knit group of parents and guardians who are dedicated to making the school experience special for every child, helping to create a vibrant and supportive environment for our kids to thrive in. We feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of this wonderful school community that has become like extended family to us.

Omi Grade Five

I like the diversity of PHS, how it incorporates the outdoors into its curriculum, and how, since it is such a small community, you can be great friends with everyone.

PHS is BUILDING TOGETHER Progressive Education is, put simply, a philosophy of education which honors the fact that true, lasting learning is both experiential and emergent, based on authentic experiences and inspired by the child’s own interests as they develop. As a progressive school, we understand that the process of learning and the lived day-to-day experience of being in school are just as important as any specific content learned or skills acquired. The opportunity to explore and create real world projects with hand tools and wood was embraced early by progressive schools, although in the first part of the 20th century, such “industrial arts” learning was typically provided only to boys. As early as 1910, the focus on wood working became a major tenet of progressive education, emphasizing process over product and highlighting the intentional development of a student’s character and their problem solving skills.

12 | IMPACT REPORT | 2022-23

Our “Building Together” Fund-a-Need held in May 2023 raised nearly $50,000 to help PHS embrace this foundational element of progressive education, and adjust it to suit our current day students and world, especially as we strive to counterbalance some of the more challenging aspects of the powerful technology environment we now inhabit and our students wrestle with each day. In Fall 2023, we were thrilled to unveil a major component of this project, the Dragon Workshop, a space dedicated to woodworking and other creative, hands-on activities for all TK-8 students.
