Comics and Basic Animation Grades: TK-5 Times: 3:30-4:30pm Cost: $345.00 Min/Max Students: 4-15

Explore the world of your favorite animated character as you go on an adventure with them in your fantasy world through storyboards and narratives. Design and discover their universe, take us on a unique adventurous journey through comics, flipbooks, zoetropes and basic animation skills. Make your first mini comic series, your first gag cartoon strips, web comics and more!

Comic and basic animation fall classes will focus on engaging each students' creativity individually but also emphasizing on activities that are done collaboratively as a class. Each session will be an hour. The session will open up with a 5-10 minute ice-breaker activity, where students are required to draw still forms from their surroundings with dialogues or character expressions, this allows the class to know how their fellow students are doing and how to be supportive towards their peer group. This activity also sets pace for the main topic of the session, which lasts for 20-30 minutes.

The main themes in this class range from understanding and drawing basic comic elements, to character design and personalities, character facial expressions, gestures, the use of emanata lines, sound effects, dialogues and thought bubbles, self-made flip books, basics of animation, to web publishing formats for comics online (The themes are appropriated to class age and size). The last 5-10 minutes of the class are for questions that students may have or an overall class critique on the work done by the students. The critiquing is always constructive, to make the students realize their own potential as artists and storytellers.

I encourage students to use a positive tone in their comics as I help them with their dialogues in the lesson. The class emphasises on every story being told, heard and respected. Students learn to appreciate and inspire each other through their diverse art styles and storytelling techniques. pn

Teacher/ Company Information

Christy Cunningham is a San Francisco based character artist. Having a fascination with telling stories, she started posting original comics online in 2011 while she was still majoring in Physics at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Christy decided to pursue her creative efforts full time in 2014, when she earned a BFA in Traditional Animation at Academy of Art University. While there, she was a project lead on the stop motion short film Day Job, which went on to be featured at the school's 2016 Spring Show.

Inspired by her experiences around the streets of San Francisco and in the alternative culture scene, Christy now uses her animation skills to make caricatural drawings and illustrations that explore both the peculiarity and allure of people. Working in a variety of mediums, from ink and watercolor to digital, she utilizes a jagged gothic aesthetic informed by classic claymation films and contemporary animated shows. She specializes in character design and single-panel comics.

ShuchiMishra is the Comics and Basic Animation founder and owner. She graduated with a MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts in 2019. Since then she has been teaching comic and basic animation workshops at various schools in the Bay Area. Her curriculum focuses on visual storytelling, personal expression and exploration through images and words. She loves teaching comics and basic animation tools and techniques to kids as she feels that it broadens her students' imagination, improves their language and learning skills and deepens their understanding of complex subject matters such as diversity, culture, science, history, mathematics etc. by the simple use of sequential art. She's currently a comic artist in residence at the Writer's House Pittsburgh, PA and a teaching artist at the Carnegie Museum of Art. When she's not drawing or teaching, she is usually walking or hiking out in the wilderness. To know more about the artist, check out her website: www.shuchitamishra.com. pn
