Technology RapidBend Turbo charge your press brake. RapidBend technology is available in three performance levels - RapidBend, RapidBend Plus and RapidBend Ultimate to boost machine performance and significantly enhance your productivity.

RapidBend Ultimate While ensuring user safety is critical for both press brake manufacturers and operators, it is equally important to maintain machine performance. In general, traditional safety and optical protection methods can restrict machine performance and interfere with part production that can result in significantly reduced productivity. RapidBend Ultimate technology changes the game by enabling press brakes to operate without restriction to achieve maximum safety and performance. Through a high-speed dynamic muting process and in conjunction with BendShield technology, the tools can close safely at maximum speed, then transition to bending speed right at the material pinch point. This effectively reduces the speed change point to 0mm, eliminating unnecessary slow speed travel to minimise the machine cycle time. RapidBend Ultimate works with a wide range of part profiles including box bending with side flanges. With time savings of as much as 3 seconds per cycle, RapidBend Ultimate boosts machine performance to significantly enhance your productivity.

BendVision Real-time bending analysis - unlimited possibilities. What is BendVision? BendVision is an advanced high-speed image processing technology that provides real-time analysis of the bending process. The technology is incorporated into the existing hardware of the press brake optical guarding system so no extra components are required, resulting in an efficient and cost effective solution. What does BendVision do? BendVision processes images of the press brake tools and material during the bending process and transfers a range of information to the CNC via SmartLink, including raw and processed images, material bend velocity and live angle data. Press brakes equipped with BendVision can make use of this real-time data to provide users with a wide range of customised functions. BendVision for angle measurement BendVision technology provides a range of angle measurement data that includes the inside and outside angles of the material, average angle, material warp angle from machine deflection, material spring back angles for various material types, thickness and grain direction, plus end of relaxation angle once the bend has been completed. BendVision for angle control The ability for the CNC to receive BendVision angle data opens up a wide range of possibilities for real-time angle control. Instead of just confirming angles are within tolerance, the CNC can use the live angle plus a measured spring back angle to control the bending depth for flexible active and dynamic angle control solutions. Find out more The features and functions that are available with BendVision equipped press brakes will differ and are unique to each press brake make and model. Hall A - A2140 LVD Strippit showcases Industry 4.0-ready products designed to help fabricators advance their business, including the Dyna-Cell robotic bending cell now featuring LVD’s patented Easy-Form® Laser adaptive bending system and revolutionary programming wizard, as well as the ToolCell automated tool changing press brake. The Dyna-Cell makes its North American debut at FABTECH. It combines the high-speed DynaPress Pro electric press brake and a Kuka robot to automate the bending of small- to medium-sized parts in varying batch sizes at speeds up

to 25mm per second. The DynaPress Pro is now available with LVD’s exclusive Easy-Form Laser adaptive bending system to ensure bending accuracy. Dyna-Cell is equipped with an intelligent programming wizard, revolutionary because CAM program preparation is handled completely offline with no need to physically teach the robot. This eliminates considerable downtime and ensures that the bending process is continuous and uninterrupted. After importing the 3D-drawing, the software automatically generates the bending and robotics program. The software calculates an optimum collision-free path, including all gripper positions. Families of parts have been defined for easy programming, such as multi flange, brackets and profiles. LVD’s 1010 rule delivers on the promise of a fast “art to part” process with 10 minutes for CAM generation of the bending and robot program and 10 minutes for setup and find first part generation. Dyna-Cell is designed to work in either automated bending mode or as a stand-alone press brake when the application does not warrant automation. This makes Dyna-Cell versatile and economical for a wide scope of bending operations. A patent-pending universal gripper handles a wide diversity of parts, eliminating the need for different-sized grippers and reducing part regripping and changeover time. LVD’s universal gripper accommodates part sizes from 30 mm x 100 mm up to 350 mm x 500 mm and manages parts as heavy as 3 kg. Dyna-Cell is a compact bending cell with a footprint of only 5 m x 5 m. Also on display is the ToolCell automated tool changing press brake. ToolCell significantly reduces tooling set up time for high bending throughput. The machine features

13

FABTECH Preview an integrated tool changer and tool storage system. ToolCell automatically selects and places the tooling required for the job. While the operator is preparing parts for the next job, the machine unloads the previous tool setup and loads the next setup, all without manual intervention. The accuracy of bending operations is assured with LVD’s patented EasyForm Laser adaptive bending system, standard on all ToolCell models. The system transmits information in real time to the CNC control, which adjusts to ensure the correct angle. The bending process is not interrupted, and no production time is lost.

Hall A - A2941 Prima Power provides a unique range of servo-electric press to meet any production requirement. With more than 30 years of experience in press brakes manufacturing, Prima Power was one of the first companies to apply servo-electric technology to its machines 20 years ago, replacing hydraulic solutions. Today, the servoelectric drive system included in the eP-Series means: shorter cycle time by up to 30%, lower energy consumption, less maintenance and no oil to purchase or to get rid of. The eP press brake is available in four models with different press tonnage and bending length to meet any production requirement: eP-0520 (2100 mm of bending length, 55 t of press tonnage), eP-1030 (3150 mm of bending length, 105 t), eP-1336 (3640 mm of bending length, 135 t), and eP-2040, (4100 mm of bending length and 200 t). The eP pulley belt system is actuated by Prima Electro servo drives and distributes the bending force over the whole bending length. The system consists of fixed and moving rolls spread out over the total working length of the upper beam. The belt itself is a steel wire reinforced maintenance free belt. It is not a tooth-belt, nor is the functioning based on friction, but the entire force is transmitted through tension – a simple and reliable solution. The Prima Power eP family is based on a rigid O-frame. This ensures tool alignment even under stress deformation since there is no horizontal displacement. The eP Series features the CNC Crowning device

14

that regulates the wedges of the lower table automatically to create a perfect crowning for each single bend according to different lengths and bending forces. The CNC Crowning allows a constant bending angle all over the length even if the bending parameters are different from the common rule of using V-die with a measure of 8 times the thickness of the bent material. Also safety is remarkable in the eP press brakes. The IRIS System safety equipment by Lazer Safe represents the most advanced safety solution for press brakes in terms of productivity and protection level. It allows the operator to safely work close to the tools without interrupting high approaching speed. Compared with other guarding systems or even unguarded machines the block laser system can save up to 2 or more seconds per cycle. The accuracy and performance of the Prima Power eP Series are outstanding in the standard configuration. However, they can be further enhanced to satisfy specific needs and more demanding applications. TMS for reliable thickness measurement, IRIS PLUS for real time angle correction, Flattening Table, for easier operation and increased productivity, Bending Follower, to process big and heavy part with one operator, are some of the additional features to boost machine performances.

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

Hall A - A2133 Of all the main sheet metal processing technologies, the press brake is probably the least evolved and integrated in the smart factory context, requiring a strong operator presence and interaction. Precisely to meet the need to integrate the press brake into the production process, mitigating the difficulties in sourcing qualified machine operators, Salvagnini has focused on automation: the result of this work is the B3.AU-TO press brake, equipped with the new automatic tool change, the concrete expression of a new concept of automated, scalable press brake. “First and foremost, we simplified the use of the machine,” explains Giulio Farina, CEO of Salvagnini Robotica, “and we made sure it could communicate its own data to the other machines and corporate management systems. The aim is to make bending an operation that is less influenced by process variables and, as a result, provides greater certainties, in terms of processing times as well as costs and budgets. The MAC2.0 guarantees greater stability to the process, simultaneously reducing the cycle times: via a single laser detection, the press brake adapts to any variations in the material which, when necessary, are automatically compensated for.” The new AU-TO automatic tool change concludes a path began with the ATA automatic tool adjuster, and allows Salvagnini to significantly reduce the variability which has always defined conventional bending, redefining the concept of time linked to the press brake: whatever the material, thickness and shape of the part being machined, each specific tooling always has a sure, repeatable and predictable duration.

pressbrakebuyersguide.com

But AU-TO also allows Salvagnini to create a modular concept of automation, scalable to meet the customer’s needs, maximizing the flexibility and autonomy of the press brake, allowing it to adapt to tooling needs and manage tools according to what is being produced. “It’s not a simple automatic re-tooling,” Farina continues, “but a more evolved concept: we provide the customer with different levels of automation. The first level is represented by the ATA device, which is used to change and automatically adjust the upper bending tool length, saving time and increasing production efficiency. The second level involves the extension of the ATA.L device to lower tools; this is the ideal solution for kit productions, allowing parts with different thicknesses to be bent in sequence. The third level is the MVM option, the variable opening die alternative to the ATA.L: it automatically adapts the V opening according to the program and is used to bend materials with different thicknesses and radii. No operator intervention is required to set up the dies, to the full benefit of the productivity and flexibility of the press brake. At the trade fair, Salvagnini is presenting the AU-TO tool change, the fourth and most advanced level, which does not exclude the features of the ATA device: it reduces set-up times and increases B3 press brake availability, allowing the user to create the automation best suited to his own manufacturing reality, automatically tooling the machine with the best possible strategies for his own production flow.”

Taking on the challenge of sheet metal variations. Press brake mechanical designs, control technologies and CNC software have come a long way in recent years. Modern press brakes are designed to be extremely accurate and with excellent repeatability, so they are more than capable of producing consistent results. However, no matter how capable a machine is at performing bending tasks, the final results are always subjected to variations in sheet metal quality, thickness and grain direction that can lead to inconsistent bend angles, wasted material and lost production time. Reliable and consistent production can be hampered by variations in material thickness when parts are cut from sheets that come from different batches. When blank parts are cut from multiple sheet stocks, there is no guarantee that the material will be consistent from one part to the next. Even minor variations in sheet thickness could require corrections to be made in the program to compensate for this.

Material grain direction is another issue that can cause problems with inconsistent spring back angles. There can be variations in spring-back due to changes in material grain direction as the part is turned and rotated between bends or there may be an inconsistency in the grain direction from one part to the next in a batch of parts. This could be due to the orientation of the blanks when they were cut from a single sheet or if the blanks are cut from different stock.

The normal process for press brake operators is to setup the machine and tooling for a new bending job, run a few test parts, then manually check the results. Unless all conditions are perfect, the operator needs to spend time making manual corrections for each step in the program, then run a few extra parts to make sure the angles are correct and within tolerance. Of course, all this takes time before production is up and running, not to mention wasted blanks. Even while parts are being processed, it is usually necessary to manually check each part or a sample of parts from a large batch to ensure angle tolerances and consistency are maintained. To aid the bending process, there are many different forms of angle measuring methods available to machine operators, from manual measurement using a hand-held protractor, to laser-based projection systems and mechanical contact devices. However, having the ability to automatically measure bend angles and use the information to control the bending process can prove invaluable.

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

BendVision technology provides press brake manufacturers with an economical solution for measurementcontrolled bending, as opposed to checking the angle after the bend has been completed. BendVision takes a unique approach through advanced image processing technology that delivers greater flexibility and accuracy for machine manufacturers and users. The technology behind BendVision image processing is incorporated into the hardware of the press brake safety guarding system that needs to be fitted to every press brake by the manufacturer anyway to meet ANSI B11.3-2012 standards compliance. The guarding system uses camera technology for optical monitoring of the punch and detection of foreign objects inside the space between the tools during machine operation. When the press brake is in the fast closing portion of the cycle, the camera system is providing the safety function, however once the punch contacts the material surface to start the bending sequence, the optical protection is no longer active. From this point onwards, the camera is sitting idle until the start of the next machine cycle.

pressbrakebuyersguide.com

BendVision takes advantage of this idle time by switching the camera function to active image processing where images are constantly taken from the end-view of the machine and processed in real-time. By integrating with the existing guarding hardware, the process eliminates the requirement for additional components, sensors and mounting hardware that are normally dedicated only for the angle measuring functions. For press brake manufacturers, BendVision is an efficient and cost-effective technology for incorporating methods to accurately control the bending process.

BendVision analyses images of the material and tools during the bending process and by capturing the material limb information, measures the inside and outside angles of the part where both sides are open (a flat profile part for example). When forming a box shaped part where the inside angle is obscured by the side flanges, BendVision will identify, analyse and measure the outside angles. As a flexible technology, BendVision image data can be utilized by the press brake manufacturer to create a wide range of proprietary angle control methods. >>

Taking on the challenge of sheet metal variations.

Prima Power To mitigate inconsistencies that could be caused by variations in material grain direction, the ability to determine the material spring back angle in advance on every single bend, is incredibly valuable. acceleration, deceleration and fast response times of the servoelectric drive system. Compared to conventional press brakes, considerable productivity increases can be achieved with a reduction of cycle times by up to 30% or more. The addition of BendVision provides an additional performance benefit to an already efficient machine. Prima Power takes advantage of the realtime image data to provide users with a high-speed angle correction function that measures material spring back and controls bending on the fly. Prior to reaching the target angle - 90 degrees for example - the machine will under bend the material to an angle of say 100 degrees, then release pressure on the material while BendVision data analysis takes place to measure the spring back. The part is measured in real-time with 100

measurements per second being transferred to the CNC. What the CNC looks for is the angle value increasing as the material opens up, then a series of consecutive angles that are the same. This indicates that the material spring back has stopped and reached its end of relaxation point. The CNC applies the spring back angle to the final target angle for that bend. For example, if the spring back angle is measured at 1.8 degrees, then the CNC adjusts the targeted live bend angle to 88.2 degrees. After spring back has been determined, the machine continues to bend the part, following the BendVision real-time angle measurement data until the live angle reaches 88.2 degrees. At this point, bending stops and the material is released while BendVision measures and confirms that the final angle is 90 degrees, plus or minus the tolerance value that is defined in the program by the operator. This process is quite different to how angle corrections are traditionally handled. Normally, the CNC will take a known spring back value for the type of material or a measured spring back angle and uses this information to calculate a correction required to achieve the target angle. However, this is performed without actually knowing what the final result will be until the part can be measured and the angle confirmed after the bend has been completed. Utilizing the BendVision data, Prima Power takes advantage of live angle bending, where the CNC simply continues bending the material until the real-time measured angle equals the target angle including the spring back value.

Cincinnati Inc CI (Cincinnati Inc.) was an early adopter of BendVision technology and was the first manufacturer to offer BendVision equipped press brakes to the US market. The company has developed proprietary angle measuring, control and automatic correction functions in their CNC software to aid in more efficient and accurate processing of parts. The base function is Measure Only mode that allows the machine operator to define an angle tolerance for the part to be formed. At the completion of each stroke, an image of the part is processed, and the measured bend angle is displayed in a small window on the CNC, along with an indication if the part is within tolerance. In the Measure Only mode, there is an option to apply an angle correction for the bend step. This option can be selected on a bend by bend basis for

pressbrakebuyersguide.com

Cincinnati Inc. was an early adopter of BendVision technology each step in the program. If an angle is out of tolerance, an angle correction is automatically saved in the program and the correction value is applied on the next part. A more advanced Measure and Re-Hit mode enables the machine to automatically measure and re-bend the part to produce a bend angle within the desired tolerance. The BendVision data analysis provides each calculated measurement to the CNC within 10 milliseconds so the machine can make several hits on the material in a very short time span with minimal delay to the bend cycle. Once the angle is within tolerance, the ram will reverse, and the final bend angle is displayed on the CNC. CI offers BendVision as an option on their Goform electric press brakes as well as Maxform and Autoform hydraulic models up to 10 feet overall length.

By combining safety and measuring technologies into a single efficient and cost-effective solution, press brake manufactures now have greater flexibility in being able to offer angle measurement and control as standard features rather than expensive optional extras. Through the integration of a BendVision enabled angle control processes, the press brake can aid the operator by eliminating the need to manually make and enter angle corrections. BendVision helps to minimise material wastage and machine production times can be reduced not only through a shorter setup time, but also by ensuring parts are produced more consistently and accurately, irrespective of any material variations. www.pressbrakebuyersguide.com/ technology/bendvision

Drive System Overview Hydraulic Press Brakes Standard hydraulic designs have been the primary type of drive system for press brakes for decades. While there have been more advanced hybrid and electric systems developed over the years, hydraulic press brakes still account for the majority of machines manufactured today due to their reliability, versatility and flexibility. From small, light tonnage models right through to large machines with very high pressing force. BENEFITS

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• All-round versatility. Machines are available in a wide range of lengths and tonnages.

• Incredibly versatile and suitable for almost any bending application.

• Hydraulic systems can achieve a much higher pressing force compared with hybrid and electric machines.

• Suitable for low tonnage applications right through to high tonnage applications in excess of 4,000 tons.

• A greater range of material thicknesses can be processed, from light gauge material to heavy plate metal.

• Suitable for a wider range of bending lengths up to around 14 metres.

• Manufacturers offer greater flexibility and customisation including larger tool openings and throat depths. • Long-term durability, reliability and ease of servicing.

Hybrid Press Brakes Hybrid press brakes combine both hydraulic and electric elements, achieving a more energy efficient drive system with improved performance. Hybrid press brakes use a bi-directional servo electric drive system to pump oil to the hydraulic cylinders. Compared with a traditional hydraulic system where the pump is running continuously, even when the machine is idle, a hybrid system is only working when motion is required. This means that hybrid systems consume very little energy when idle and are more energy efficient when working. Hybrid systems use a smaller hydraulic oil tank, leading to a more efficient design and lower maintenance costs when an oil change is required. When it comes to noise output, hybrid systems are quieter than hydraulic machines due to the lower sound levels of the servo electric drives compared with traditional hydraulic pump motors and that they are only running while the machine is being operated. BENEFITS

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• Lower energy consumption since the pump is only running when the machine is moving and when bending force is required.

• Suitable for a wide range of bending applications that require pressing force up to around 500 tons.

• Improved control and bending accuracy.

• Ideal for high-volume production where speed, accuracy and efficiency are required.

• Faster acceleration and deceleration which results in shorter cycle times.

• Suit a range of bending lengths up to around 7 metres.

• Lower noise levels. • Use less oil than hydraulic machines. • Economical to maintain.

36

PRESS BRAKE BUYER’S GUIDE

Electric Press Brakes Electric press brakes eliminate the need for hydraulic pumps, valves and complex piping, for an extremely quiet, fast and efficient bending solution. Electric machines can feature a variety of drive methods including belt or gear direct drive systems and belt / pulley systems for even distribution of pressing force on longer machines. Smaller models are ergonomically designed with integrated foot pedals and folding support tables that allow workers to comfortably operate the machine from a seated position as well as offering a range of additional features that help to reduce operator fatigue. BENEFITS

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

• Extremely quiet.

• Electric machines are ideal for repetitive bending of small parts where fast cycle speed and accuracy is required.

• Low energy consumption. • Ergonomically designed for optimal comfort and reduced operator fatigue. • Smaller models can be portable, offering greater flexibility for machine placement in the workshop.

• Suitable for low tonnage bending applications of up to around 200 tons. • Suitable for bending lengths up to around 4 metres.

• Consistent operation and accuracy over time since there is no degradation of hydraulic components. • Require minimal maintenance compared with hydraulic and hybrid machines since there are no hydraulic components to service or oil changes required.

Muratec Ball Screw Press Brake BB series is driven by AC servo motor and ball screw mechanism. It has reached high productivity with a fast ram and back gauge plus extremely consistent repeat accuracy. www.muratec.net

The Servo-Electric press brake is driven by a high inertia type servo motor and heavy duty ball-screw for positioning the Y-axis. The absence of hydraulic components makes this Servo-Electric press brake environmentally friendly, without the risk of oil pollution or oil leakage problems, as well as a more energyefficient design compared with a hydraulic press brake.
