T
he Pretty and Inked Project is the submission based photographic project of Houston-based photographer Amber Strickler. P&I focuses primarily on the documentation of heavily tattooed women through the use of digital, 35mm and medium format film. Pretty & Inked™ was born of the idea that even tattooed women desire to be captured in soft, sensual images…a stark contrast to the types of images that saturate magazines and social media. Shooting in film lent to that softness, creating images that are pastel, sensual and delicate in feel. Its goal was, and still is, to bring out the inner girly girl in the ladies who come to P&I from the alt model community… an idea that has been fondly accepted and praised by the women who take part in the project. Often times the type of shoots P&I takes on are the first of its kind for the model involved. P&I began with the idea of building an alt model boudoir portfolio of the ladies based in Houston. That idea quickly spread to an evolution in wardrobe and locations. Within two years of the project’s launch, P&I Men was launched and it was the first time local tattooed gentlemen were added to the roster of gorgeous faces that don the pages of the Pretty & Inked™ website and blog. With time, the project began to evolve creatively, in an effort to avoid becoming stagnant and boring. Concepts beyond that of indoor boudoir sessions shortly come to light and more and more models began to take notice of the softness that P&I had to offer. Within the past 3 years Pretty & Inked™ has celebrated multiple publications and has spread the portfolio of models beyond Houston and it hopefully is nowhere near the end of its journey. With an eye on a change in direction to a darker, yet still feminine feel to every image, Pretty & Inked™ is currently in the conception and planning stages of darker thematic shoots.
