20th Christmas edition What a privilege to be able to wish our readers a blessed Christmas for the 20th time and to look back on all the happenings of a year for the 20th time in the existence of GAME & HUNT! From humble beginnings in 1994, this magazine has grown phenomenally with regard to quality, contents and scope – especially in 2014 when we published an issue of 200 pages in August, which was a first. We are grateful for the blessings from Above and for the contribution of dedicated colleagues as well as loyal readers and advertisers. For 20 years we have been supporting the organised hunting, game producers and nature conservation organisations, and promoting the concept of sustainable utilisation of our natural assets. It has been a privilege to contribute to the dynamic growth of the general game industry, which has brought us to the stage where today there are more than 15 million head of game on 21 million hectares of game ranches. The game numbers and area with regard to private game ranching total more than double that of all the national parks and provincial reserves combined. This is a great triumph for conservation! Amidst speculation over the sustainability of rising prices for game, this year saw numerous new record prices. Looking at the total turnover of game auctions, the R1 billion-mark for 2013 was exceeded and preliminary figures for 2014 indicate that this total has already been surpassed in Limpopo Province alone. We wish all our readers a truly blessed Christmas season.

From the Scriptures Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever – Psalm 106:1.

Phasa distances itself from illegal hunting practices “The Professional Hunters Association of South Africa (Phasa) distances itself completely from the practices and actions of which Dawie and Janneman Groenewald stand accused. Dawie Groenewald was expelled from our organisation eight years ago for bringing it into disrepute,” said Adri Kitshoff, Phasa chief executive. Phasa said it had noted the charges brought against the Groenewalds in the USA for, among other things, selling and conducting illegal rhino hunts in South Africa, and pointed out that neither of the Groenewald brothers was a member of its organisation. Kitshoff noted, however, that certain media had incorrectly quoted United States Fish and Wildlife Services (USFWS) director Dan Ashe as referring to rhinos as being critically endangered. “White rhino is listed as ‘endangered’ by both the USFWS and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (Cites) and this distinction is important because it determines

annual hunting quotas, permitting rules and other legislative requirements applicable to the hunting of Phasa CEO that listed species.” Adri Kitshoff She said that both the USFWS and CITES support the sustainable utilisation of natural resources, including rhino. “Ashe is quoted as saying that South Africa has worked extraordinarily hard to protect its wild rhino population, using trophy hunts as a key management tool. These alleged illegal ‘hunts’ undermine that work and the reputation of responsible hunters everywhere. “We thank the USFW for their continued recognition of the role sustainable hunting plays in conservation practices across the world. We also thank them for the key role that they play in our conservation success story by bringing perpetrators to book.”
