Dear Reader

Sometimes we actually do feel confused about our favorite style. There’s no doubt that we love the country style – we always have. We just love the cozy and evocative feel of it. Still, we sometimes find it hard to furnish our own homes because there are so many different ways of implementing it. Country style is not just country style. When we see a home here in the magazine, visit some of our colleagues from the editorial office or just visit people who live in beautiful homes, we sometimes become absolutely spellbound by the consistency of the style. One home might look fantastic as “worn and white” with the perfect furniture with peeling paint and a romantic touch. Another home might have a more rustic style with lots of French treasures, and we find that equally beautiful and exciting. We also love flowers and ”meringue romance” which is what we call the original shabby chic style with all its flowers and pastels. We're finding it hard to choose or to find out how to combine the items in the right way. What we’re trying to say is that even though we’ve been working with interior design most of our lives and ought to have an eye for home furnishings, we’re never really happy with our own homes. We feel that it’s difficult – perhaps you know the feeling? It seems like “everybody else” manages to find the best things on the flea market and make the nicest arrangements. We often have to compromise to make space for children, pets and our spouses who don’t always like the same things as we do. But after all that’s exactly what makes it so special to us – a wonderful mixture of things that might not fit each other perfectly but add a personal touch to our homes. Homes that see regular changes and renovations whenever new ideas are born. That’s the good thing about it: if the design doesn’t turn out as you’d wanted – or if you get bored of it after a while – you just change it!

Enjoy the magazine!

Vintage ďŹ nesses

Mariëlle is married and has three sons. With so many wonderful men in her life, one would expect her home to be furnished in a rustic and industrial style. But that’s not the case. On the contrary, she is surrounded by a beautiful and very romantic vintage style with lots of fi nesses. Her evocative home is full of antique vintage treasures, including anything from upholstered chests and cases, French quilts and lace textiles, and lots of exquisite garments to rustic, old, French pieces of furniture. Twice a year, the whole family travels to their absolute favorite holiday destination, France. They don’t just go there to enjoy the good weather and visit idyllic villages – they also go there for the countless flea markets. The home bears witness to these holidays and you can see many of Mariëlle’s French treasures in her personal and evocative interior design.
