Cover / Voorblad The red lechwe is an exotic antelope that keeps mostly to the shallow floodplains that fringe on swamps and rivers on the transitional ecotone between tall beds of papyrus, reeds, semi-aquatic grasses and dry land. J du P Bothma shares general as well as management information on these animals that take to the water when feeling threatened. Photo: Nico Smit 123rf.com Rifle: The Blaser R8 Limpopo is truly a multifunctional rifle with interchangeable barrels. It has a semi-weight barrel contour, black receiver, and the Zeiss Conquest 3-12x50 riflescope is fitted with a Blaser saddle mount. See page 26.

LAND ISSUES The populist remarks made by the state president in his State of the Nation Address on 12 February should send warning bells ringing. It differs dramatically from the stance the minister of rural development and land reform took in 2014 on the proposals of organised agriculture, and shows that government cannot be trusted in consultations regarding land reform. WRSA is also alarmed about the lack of constant and clear messages emanating from government on land reform and its effect on food security, employment creation in agriculture and the role of the wildlife industry in conservation and biodiversity. It affects both game ranchers and hunters, therefore WRSA should continuously let fly at government through organised agriculture. HUNTERS AND GAME BREEDERS It is a great pity that the SA Hunters and Game Conservation Association (SAHGCA) publicly called on government to implement measures to regulate selective and intensive game breeding practices, which led to WRSA also reacting publicly. It will be as great a pity if these two great partners in the wildlife industry, the hunters and the game ranchers, tackle each other in public on issues that could have been sorted out amicably amongst each other, without adding fuel to the fires of the animal rights organisations. In a recent article, the chair of the South African Hunters Confederation (Chasa), Stephen Palos, also referred to contentious issues between hunters and game ranchers and came to the conclusion that such public rows often cause more damage than any of the supposed harmful practices. It seems to be a more acceptable approach. tion may be reproduced in any way without the written permission of the publisher. Phasa CEO receives SCI’s President Award

A

dri Kitshoff, the chief executive of the Professional Hunters’ Association of South Africa (Phasa), was presented with the coveted Safari Club International’s (SCI’s) President Award at the global hunting association’s annual convention held in Nevada, Las Vegas. The award was given to Kitshoff by SCI’s president Craig Kaufman in recognition of and gratitude for her leadership of Phasa over the years. “You have established Phasa as a valuable partner to Safari Club International, and your influence and efforts have positively impacted both hunters and wildlife,” he said. Kitshoff said she accepted the award on behalf of Phasa, South Africa’s most dynamic hunting organisation, and her beautiful country while inviting all SCI members to visit South Africa for an unforgettable hunting safari. “It is a real privilege to be honoured for something I truly believe in and for which I have such a strong passion,” she said. “I would not be standing here were it not for the people and institutions that have supported me and Phasa over the years,” she said. “My thanks go to our members, without whom we wouldn’t have an organisation, and especially to my colleagues and executive committee, who have supported me so ably over the years through their sage counsel and advice. It is due to their hard work and determination that ours is the most dynamic and respected professional hunting association in South Africa. “A word of appreciation is also due to the many hunting forums and industry bodies to which we are affiliated for their guidance and support, as well as the entire wildlife industry and its value chain – from the landowners to our taxidermists – who assist us in delivering the high-quality hunting experience for which South Africa has now become world-famous. Last but not least, I would like to say thank you to our government without whose firm believe in the concept of sustainable utilisation, none of this would be possible.”
