A childhood dream came true

6

Sandra, Marcel, their daughter Melissa, 16, and their son Jaimy, 14, have been living in this very charming and incredibly well-kept house with a thatched roof in the Dutch town of Oldebroek for 12 years. The family has renovated the entire house throughout the years, always attempting to preserve as many original elements of the house as possible. When Sandra was a little girl she used to cycle past this house. She was always very fascinated by it and she thought that it looked just like a romantic doll’s house with red shutters. Back then she had no idea that she’d be living in this house 20 years later. The house was put up for sale at the exact time when Sandra and her husband were looking to buy a house together. They immediately bought it and Sandra’s big childhood dream came true.

Tips:

When you embark on the renovation of an old house you easily lose your motivation and spirit along the way. That’s why it’s so important to try and preserve every single element that’s worth preserving. Throughout the time previous owners might have worked on the house, removing or covering up many of the beautiful, old construction elements and adding more modern ones. In this house, the couple was able to 7

preserve the old ceiling beams and wall beams that were found when they pulled down walls to create a larger living room. The ceiling beams were painted white but the other beams were left with their original wood-color to add warmth to the furnishings. When the couple combined several rooms, they faced the problem of being able to re-use the floor in one room but not in another, and the solution was a new floor in dark wood in the part of the living room where the floor couldn’t be re-used. In the other part of the room the beautiful, old floor was painted white. The old wood stove was still in the house and the nice, Dutch tiles behind it were still intact. Both elements were carefully restored and now make up two of the special highlights of the house. This romantic home is furnished with lots of heirlooms, antiques and other nice treasures from local markets combined with nice, new items. If needed, Sandra renovates all the old furniture with new upholstery and paint to make it fit to her style. A new wall cupboard was turned into a nice, little shelf with a lavish golden frame from a flea market: the cupboard doors were removed, the nice frame was adjusted to fit to the cupboard measures and then it was mounted and painted white.
