e usually write about the fun and passion of aviation here. Yet, the sombre reality of the Germanwings disaster hovers large, paired with an enduring sense of bewilderment. Our thoughts are not only with the victims and their loved ones, but also with the rescue teams who are sifting through unthinkable individual tragedies. As every active service member knows, some sights are impossible to “un-see”, and our thoughts are with all of them. The larger issue here is cockpit safety. The “four eyes in the cockpit” rule came swiftly, but too late. Why it took European and other international airlines so long to get to that point is beyond us and many others. American airlines had this in force since a decade ago, and at times were even derided for it. Be that as it may, it is a complex issue which adds an under-reported, and often overlooked, aspect to private aviation. Private jets provide comfort, time saving, discretion, privacy and convenience. But they also provide a layer of safety and security that is levels above what is provided by commercial airlines. Private aircraft owners know their pilots well. They have hired them and have interaction with them at all times and on all levels. They know their personal lives and have control over most of their professional activities. And most of all, they have direct and unhindered access to the cockpit at all times, should one of their pilots go rogue or become incapacitated. And that is absolutely priceless.
