Letter From The Editor Many civilians, and by that I mean people who don’t breathe the hothouse air of the fashion industrial complex daily, have been struck of late by the rather odd looks — big noses, large foreheads, awkwardly coltish legs or squished mouths — of many of the current top models walking the runway and appearing in magazines such as this, and in its advertisements. The glamazon supermodels of yesteryear (Christy, Linda, Naomi), and today’s Sports Illustrated or Victoria’s Secret models (Gisele Bündchen, Kate Upton), are much easier to understand, more obvious in their beauty (especially to the average straight guy). Those girls are air-brushed-seeming goddesses of human perfection, while the new models are fairly unconventional, far more individual. Which models are hot at any given time is, like fashion itself, subject to trends. While models of color are still an infuriating minority, and nearly all models — at least to civilian eyes — are terribly undernourished-looking, we have made some progress opening the canon of beauty to a wider and more nuanced range of looks. This is in large part the result of the vision of one woman, Ashley Brokaw, fashion’s most influential casting director. Brokaw has a penchant for beauty that is, as she calls it, “a slow burn,” the kind you recognize over time, and which may even seem shocking or strange at first. Models are never going to be an anything-goes lot, nor should they be. They represent ideals, convey emotions that move or inspire us and, at the end of the day, their main job is to look good in clothes (as the French word for model, mannequin, makes clear). They are not us. But they should represent fine aspects of us — all of us.
