irports are some of my least favorite places. I purposefully arrive with just enough time to whiz through TSA Pre-Check, find my gate, and board the plane. Rarely do I have more than 20 to 30 minutes between leaving security and boarding, which means I almost never visit the shops or eat at the restaurants in the terminals. But on a recent business trip, I had the unfortunate opportunity to spend six extra hours in the airport due to a mechanical delay on the return flight. We had to de-board the plane and wait, for what felt like a day, until the airline found a replacement. During my six-hour stint, I finally had a chance to check out the shops and restaurants in the airport. I was pleasantly surprised to find a large variety of healthier food options. Many
snacks included “natural” brands. I found a few juice/smoothie bars and even a restaurant with several glutenfree options. I didn’t see a single fast-food restaurant or hot dog stand on the concourse. It was almost as though I had to search for the junk food. What I found gave me some hope that maybe corporate America is listening to consumers seeking alternatives to the plethora of bad food choices that surround us each day. Maybe healthier brands are gaining ground and, most important, maybe consumers are being more thoughtful about the foods they consume. Completely unrelated to my trip is the recent progress of the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act in Congress. It seems the passage of the bill is imminent, and even those you would expect to be against this bill are
showing some support for it. Contact your representatives to let them know you oppose this bill. Visit www.EWG. com for the latest news concerning the DARK Act. This Eating Clean issue of Natural Solutions is a tool to help you live a lifestyle that’s a little bit healthier. This was a fun issue to put together, as our editorial team got to sample gelatos (page 8), and we spent an entire afternoon testing smoothie recipes— realizing that smoothies are one type of food that’s hard to mess up (page 24). We hope you enjoy this issue, and we look forward to your feedback!
