MAY Come, May, sweet month Let the music drink from your soul Like leaves on the trees that blossom so beautifully We say that the symbol of hope is green Even the mole disc overs the light Four new stars in the eter nal night Like buds on branches that used to be naked They will unfold hope and see without eyes Disc over ing each other is the big wonder But if hope is to see us, we must make some noise Look at me, look at me Look at May

Dear Reader

It’s May – one of the most wonderful months of the year. Here in Denmark, everything is lush and fresh, and we’re often blessed with many sunny days in May. Following winter and the somewhat doubtful spring, finally we can feel the sun and the warmth. When we really want to enjoy nature, we go to the sea to experience the power of nature as intensely as possible, or we visit one of the numerous Danish bays or lakes. Lucky for us, no matter where you live in Denmark, you’re always close to the water. My favorite place is the beach of Ertebølle by the inlet of Limfjorden. It’s close to our summer house and we spend lots of time there. It’s just so wonderful...beautiful and absolutely quiet. It smells of salt water and seaweed, and the only thing you can hear is the seagulls screaming and the water lapping. Going for long walks, searching for fossilized sea urchins, or just sitting by the sea and enjoying a cup of coffee from the thermos bottle – that’s true healing. You can find such marvelous places everywhere – perhaps in a forest or a park close by – and other places can be just as fantastic. The smells in the forest on a spring day is also entrancing and watching the light pouring in between the trees can be a fantastic, almost magical experience. Just be open and allow your senses to receive, then you’ll discover the beauty that surrounds you. Or perhaps it’s time to create your very own oasis at home – in your garden, on the terrace or in a corner of the living room. We’re offering you 144 pages full of inspiration for such a project because that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? Enjoying life to the fullest!

Who’s not day-dreaming about living in the French countryside? Of creating the authentic, rustic and absolutely charming country style. Of basking in the quietness, smelling the aroma from lavender fields and olive groves. Just settling in a sense of calmness and enjoying the moment. Carpe diem – seize the day – is an old, Latin aphorism that fits perfectly to the absolutely marvelous surroundings that we’re showing you on the following pages. In this edition of the magazine, we’ve created a special French theme involving the homes of families from both Netherlands and France who’ve chosen to settle down in France. We hope that you find these homes just as inspiring as we do because they offer lots of ideas that you can easily copy no matter where you live. Perhaps you don’t live in an old stone house or in a big, marvelous villa but that doesn’t mean that you can’t create a similar relaxed atmosphere. No matter where your home is located, it ’s possible to create small oases with French elements. Pick an idea for an arrangement and let that be your starting point, allowing things to develop slowly. Before you know it, you’ve got your very own French oasis: a place for day-dreaming of France and a place for enjoying everyday life and the simple life if that ’s what you’d like. Or perhaps just a place where you can withdraw and relax. Take a look at all the pictures and get inspired.

Rustic Charm in

St . Sau vie r

Dutch couple Tineke and Bert lives in a marvelous, French cottage in the town of St. Sauvier. Just looking at the house from the outside, you already sense the special atmosphere and history of this place. The couple loves all shades of blue and finds that blue goes well with all the French elements so that’s why these color shades have turned into a consistent theme. There’s no room or outside area without a dash of blue. The table has been laid for the guests on the lawn in front of the house. Of course the tableware has a blue pattern and the iron frames on some of the garden furniture are also blue. If you look at the house, you’ll notice that the shutters are blue, too. This is a very beautiful and personal style. In some places, the shade of blue is very vibrant; in other places it’s softer. Choosing one consistent color has added a special sense of calmness to the couple’s home. Having lived here for more than 12 years, the couple has done most of the careful renovation work themselves over a period of a couple of years.
