CRITICAL THINKING

How to nurture mindset of a scientist and an engineer in the classroom environment.

session 2.

Individual study (do it at home)

Make a hypotesis and experiment. This part is designed for an individual teacher.

You will create a small home laboratory, and learn how to design and carry out experiments with your students.

In the second part of this session, as a team of teachers, you will take a role of engineers and test different kinds of bridges.

Task 1. Make a hypothesis.

Do you have any idea what will happen if you add lemon juice or soap to tea? Make hypothesis.

Write it down.

You will learn how to:

formulate the topic of work, prepare materials, carry out tests, draw conclusions.

Task 3. Build the bridge models

A beam (slab) bridge

A coruggated beam bridge

An arch bridge

A truss bridge

1

The teams choose the models.

2

Draw the schemes using the templates from this session.

3

Assemble the bridge according to the instructions.

A bridge support Prepare 2 supports for a beam, coruggated and truss bridges.

MATERIALS: a sheet of A4 paper for each support a ruler, scissors, glue 6,5

A triangular prism is formed with a 4 cm base and two sides 6.5 cm in length. Bent each sheet along the dotted lines as shown in the diagram. Glue together the two sections making up the base so that the supports is more stable.

Instruction: a beam (slab) bridge MATERIALS: two supports one sheet of A4 technical paper.

spacing. Test the construction.

Additional information It is important to be aware of the fact known that you cannot unambiguously determine which bridge is the strongest, since it depends on many factors. The strength of a bridge depends on, among other things, the materials it is made of, the span of the bridge and how it is used.
